Plot: It's been more than twenty years since Ben Cutler (Fred MacMurray) wore a badge, but when the town's bank gets robbed, he joins the posse. After the chase, where he saw Marshal Cain (Emile Meyer) get killed, he can't say "no" when the town asks him to take over the Marshal's duties. However, that same town starts to turn against him when he takes his new duties seriously by arresting and testifying against the killer... a boy, Eddie 'The Kid' Campbell (Robert Vaughn), who grew up in this town and comes from a broken home, garnering the sympathy of the townsfolk, who'd rather believe one of the other escaped bank robbers shot the sheriff. This is compounded by his daughter, who still has a crush on Eddie, even though after his mother died two years ago, he left town with not a word to her since. She, too, is convinced that Eddie is still that good little boy everyone remembers, and can't believe he's been changed, by his new life of riding with outlaws.

Plot: Ethel, daughter of Richard Menten, president of the Imperial Arms Co., is secretly engaged to Martin Bently, the secretary of the concern. Being in poor health she is sent to the country, and there, with her mother, lives with Mr. and Mrs. Landers, Harry Landers, the son, and Ethel enjoy many outings and eventually fall madly in love. Harry proposes, but Ethel tells him that she is engaged, and, being unable to combat her daily increasing love, urges her mother to take her back to the city. Sometime later Menton, having a vacancy, induces Harry to accept a position in the company. He bids farewell to his parents and hastens to the city. Ethel knows nothing of Harry's presence in the office, until one day when she is leaving with her father and Bently, she encounters Harry at the door. Half dazed he goes through the formality of an introduction. He then realizes that Bently is his rival. Harry holds his love in leash and continues a friendship with Ethel. Richard Menton has for weeks been contending with several hundred of his workmen, who demand a 10 per cent raise in wages and Harry is taken into conference. He has looked into the homes and condition of the workmen and reports that the demand is not unfair. Menton still opposes the raise and refuses the demand. A mass meeting of the men is called and they decide to strike. Ethel sees the men marching to the plant and warns the startled officials. The day watchman, intoxicated, has descended into the basement and fallen asleep, while smoking a cigarette. The cigarette falls into a heap of excelsior and sets the building on fire. In the corridors are stored many boxes of ammunition and powder ready for shipment. The officials of the plant, on seeing the mob, have fortified themselves in Menton's private office when the terrified watchman rushes up and tells them that the basement is in flames. The workmen, knowing of the ammunition in the building, beat a retreat. Menton hearing that the building is on fire swoons from heart failure. Ethel, who is also in the executive offices, is in hysterics. Harry drags Menton down the courtyard and instructs Bently to look after Ethel, who has fainted: he however, in a paroxysm of fear leaves her and dashes into the crowded yard. Harry places Menton in an ambulance and then learns that Ethel is still in the building. The explosion of the cases commences, but Harry, disregarding the danger, rushes in and drags her down the stairs amid the cheers of the mob of strikers. The strike ends and the firm gives in to the demand of the men. Ethel ignores Bently and Harry asks Menton for the hand of his daughter, which is cheerfully granted as the brave lover is pronounced "A Hero Among Men."
