Nesse seminário, vamos ouvir especialistas avaliar a situação e possíveis soluções.

http://www.egs.edu/ Manuel Delanda, contemporary philosopher, uses assemblage theory to create a materialist history of cities, including Fernand Braudel, history, civilization, immunology, disease European colonization, the supply zone, and Alfred Crosby. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland. 2011 Manuel DeLanda.
Manuel DeLanda, (born 1952 in Mexico City), is a writer, artist and distinguished philosopher who has lived in New York since 1975. He is a professor and the Gilles Deleuze Chair of Contemporary Philosophy and Science at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, a professor at the Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and professor at the University of Pennsylvania School of Design in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. DeLanda was formerly an Adjunct Associate Professor at Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University (New York).
He is the author of War In the Age of Intelligent Machines (1991), A Thousand Years of Nonlinear History (1997), Intensive Science and Virtual Philosophy (2002), A New Philosophy of Society: Assemblage Theory and Social Complexity (2006), Deleuze: History and Science (2010), and Philosophy and Simulation: The Emergence of Synthetic Reason (2011). He has published many articles and essays and lectured extensively in Europe and in the United States. His work focuses on the theories of the French philosopher Gilles Deleuze on one hand, and modern science, self-organizing matter, artificial life and intelligence, economics, architecture, chaos theory, history of science, nonlinear science, cellular automata on the other. De Landa became a principal figure in the "new materialism" based on his application of Deleuze's realist ontology. His universal research into "morphogenesis" - the production of the semi-stable structures out of material flows that are constitutive of the natural and social world - has been of interest to theorists across many academic and professional disciplines.

‘Anthropocene or Capitalocene? Why Nature Matters in the Making and Unmaking of the Modern World, and Not in the Way You Might Think’
Einstein Workgroup on ‘Rethinking Crisis’ Lecture Series at the JFKI. Freie Universität Berlin.June 2014
Introduction: Dr Larry Reynolds, Einstein Postdoctoral Fellow, Freie Universität Berlin.
http://berlincrisis.info/
As with all fashionable concepts, the Anthropocene has been subject to a wide spectrum of interpretations. But one is dominant. This one tells us that the origins of modern world are to be found in England, right around the dawn of the 19th century. The motive force behind this epochal shift? In two words: coal and steam. The driving force behind coal and steam? Not class. Not capital. Not imperialism. Not even culture. But… you guessed it, the Anthropos. Humanity as an undifferentiated whole. Above all, the Anthropocene argument obscures, and relegates to context, the actually existing relations through which women and men make history with the rest of nature: the relations of power, (re)production, and wealth in the web of life.
Jason W. Moore teaches world history and world-ecology in the Department of Sociology at Binghamton University. He has published widely on the history of capitalism, environmental history, and the capitalist world-ecology. He is presently completing Ecology and the Accumulation of Capital (Verso) and Ecology and the Rise of Capitalism (University of California Press), and serves on the editorial boards of Review, The Journal of Agrarian Change, and The Journal of World-Systems Research. His articles have been recognized with the Alice Hamilton Prize of the American Society for Environmental History, the Distinguished Scholarship Award of the Section on the Political Economy of the World-System (American Sociol. Assoc.), and the Bernstein and Byres Prize for studies in agrarian change. Professor Moore coordinates the World-Ecology Research Network. For further information on his work please visit:

Interview with Ward Morehouse III about his new book "London's Grand Hotels".

Attention Avid Travelers, Active or Armchair!
London's Grand Hotels Is a Must-Read for You
By Beatrice Williams-Rude
"London's Grand Hotels," by Ward Morehouse III is more than a description of the glorious hostelries in a fascinating city; it is a cultural and social romp through history. Like the work of the eminent French historiographer Fernand Braudel, it is a compendium of the lives of people who inhabit these commercial palaces. And like Braudels books, anyplace one opens them the material will be riveting and comprehensible, no matter that one hasnt read what came before.
This is a book to read again and again, at leisure. To savor.
The hotels chosen range from traditional English, such as Browns, the most venerable of this selection having opened in 1837 and which Queen Victoria used to frequent for tea, to Millennium Gloucester which has a super-modern world-class convention center with the latest technology on the planet. The Haymarket Hotel is the newest, having opened in 2007
The book is as much about the people who stay in them and staff them as about the hotels themselves. Of course there are meticulous physical descriptions, and attention to the amenities offered; there are even menus from hotel restaurants. But above all, this book delights in people.
It should be noted at the outset that this is a chatty book, a fun one, and throughout the charm, wit and joie de vivre of Ward Morehouse III are in evidence. This tome took tons of research -- lovingly pursued by the author. Historic names abound, Winston Churchill and Lady Nancy Astor among them.
A potential purchaser has to but peruse the index to be hooked.
The reader discovers wonderful tales about people of whom much is known -- Lindberghs report on the Luftwaffe and its bloody consequences -- and about those of whom little is known, such as the goodness of Colonel John Blashford-Snell who managed to get a much-desired grand piano (as well as medical supplies) to the Wai Wai tribe in the jungles of South America.
There are anecdotes about royals, pretenders, the famous and infamous. Stories about writers abound, Somerset Maugham, for example. Theres an astonishing letter that F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote to his daughter about Zelda and their miserable relationship. (Sheila Graham would have been delighted.)
And, of course, theres plenty on performers: Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Marilyn Monroe, both Hepburns, Katharine and Audrey. Van Johnson, Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and so on.
Its hard to imagine austere President Woodrow Wilson reveling in luxury, but he stayed at the Ritz in London. Both Teddy Roosevelt and FDR bedded down at Browns. Oscar Wilde stayed at the Savoy. Walter Cronkite was at the Savoy during WWII and returned to visit 40 years later, pointing to what had been his seat at the American Bar. Charles de Gaulle resided in the "down to earth" Connaught during WWII. .
The hotels in addition to those in this review include the Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park; Hilton Waldorf Hotel; Dukes Hotel; One Aldwych; The Stafford Hotel; The Goring Hotel; The May Fair Hotel; Grosvenor House; The Dorchester; Hilton Park Lane; The Berkeley; Four Seasons Canary Wharf; The Milestone; "41"; The Chesterfield; The Metropolitan Hotel; The Halkin; The Lanesborough; The Soho Hotel; The Piccadilly and The Gore.
As Samuel Johnson noted: "When a man is tired of London hes tired of life." Agreed!
The book has 308 pages, a section of fascinating photographs, is being published by BearManor Media and is due out in November

Beginning in 1983, Alan Macfarlane, Professor Emeritus and Life Fellow of King’s College, University of Cambridge, began what would become one of the most comprehensive visually ethnographic inquiries into modern thought. An interview series emerged entitled “Interviews with Leading Thinkers,” in which Alan Macfarlane sat down with scholars of anthropology to better understand the discipline. The project quickly grew to consider all areas of academic inquiry outside of the social sciences, from the humanities to biological and physical sciences. Over 200 interviews later—conducted with distinguished anthropologists, several Nobel laureates, and junior scholars alike—Alan has retired to his office in King’s College, Cambridge, but remains as intellectually productive as ever.
I visited Alan in King’s for the first time in 2012 on the recommendation of my mentor and his former mentee, Mark Turin, who remained emphatic that Alan be interviewed in a fashion most similar to his series, “Interviews with Leading Thinkers.” Reflecting on both the history and future of visual anthropology, history, and the role of technology within anthropological inquiry, I sat down with Alan in his office replete with mementos – including several cameras -- from his previous interviewees in February of 2014, during which he and I discussed his upbringing and childhood; his early years as a university and D.Phil. student; his fieldwork; his collaborations and inspirations in Nepal, India, and China; and, most relevant here, his unyielding interest in film and video technology, which he sees as an ethnographic method, a pedagogical tool, and, most recently, as an area in which to experiment with representational strategies in anthropology.
Interview recorded by Hunter Snyder. An edited iteration of this interview appears in American Anthropologist #151.
