A powerful piece from the front line of the Iraq war.
During the hunt for Saddam Hussein Lindsey Hilsum and her team encounter civilians who had been killed or injured in the fighting – including 5-year-old Zahra who had been shot in the head by American snipers.
She was rescued by Channel 4 News’ translator Mohammed and then treated by the Americans.
Zahra later recovered and moved to Kurdistan with her family. Mohammed was killed in in Iraq in 2004.

Archival footage married with part of a Christopher Hitchens speech, showing Saddam Hussein's final purge of the Iraqi Baath Party leadership. You'll notice a couple of small details are different than Hitchens remembers. The audience is larger, and the confessor does not come in wearing chains (metaphorically, perhaps, but not literally.) We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). Sadly, the bloodbath for Iraqis and the region was only just beginning.
Remember: Fascism means war.

you don't know who former Iraqi Information Minister Muhammed Saeed al-Sahaf is, he was the face of the Iraqi regime during the beginning of the Iraq war. Saddam Hussein was nowhere to be found but al-Sahaf, dubbed "Baghdad Bob" by the American press, was on the television spinning fantastic lies about how the war was going for Iraq.
It was of course going badly but you had to respect the man for doing his duty until the end.

On April 7, 2003, al-Sahhaf claimed that there were no American troops in Baghdad, and that the Americans were committing suicide by the hundreds at the city's gates. At that time, American tanks were patrolling the streets only a few hundred meters from the location where the press conference was held, and were clearly visible behind him.[6] His last public appearance as Information Minister was on April 8, 2003, when he said that the Americans "are going to surrender or be burned in their tanks. They will surrender, it is they who will surrender".

STORYLINE:
One year ago, a new expression entered the lexicon of war. America said its strategy for Iraq would be to 'shock and awe' the country into submission. Within hours of President Bush giving the order to attack, bombs and missiles were raining down on Baghdad on a scale the world had never seen before.
One year on, APTN has been talking to some of the pilots who flew on those first missions - and to some of the Iraqis who witnessed the bombardment from the ground.
This was how the war started from onboard the US aircraft carrier USS Constellation in the Gulf. This is how it looked from the skies over Iraq. And this is how it felt on the ground in Baghdad.
Many of the pilots who took part in 'shock and awe' missions are based at the Lemoore naval air station, 200 miles north of Los Angeles
Jeff Rocha is the commander of Strike Fighter Wing, US Pacific Fleet. He was involved in planning the first attacks, helped to select targets, and personally flew missions over Baghdad on the opening night.
A year on, he insists that despite the massive amount of firepower deployed during the 'shock and awe' phase of the war, American pilots did everything possible to minimise civilian casualties.
"The bottom line is, we told our guys it's better to bring the bombs home, than to drop them somewhere if they're not sure that's the target they were going after," said Rocha. "We got a lot of that. We got a lot of guys saying 'I can't confirm that's the right target, I'm going to bring the bombs home'
The al-Mansour district of Baghdad felt the full force of American airpower when US warplanes attacked a house where it was thought Saddam Hussein was sheltering. Four tons of explosives were deployed, reducing the building to rubble. Iraq said 14 people died.
The shock and awe strategy may have been terrifying for civilians, but US officials insist it helped to shorten the war.

Saddam Hussein
Saddam Hussein Abd al-Majid al-Tikriti (Arabic: صدام حسين عبد المجيد التكريتي Ṣaddām Ḥusayn ʿAbd al-Maǧīd al-Tikrītī; 28 April 1937 – 30 December 2006) was the fifth President of Iraq, serving in this capacity from 16 July 1979 until 9 April 2003. A leading member of the revolutionary Arab Socialist Ba'ath Party, and later, the Baghdad-based Ba'ath Party and its regional organization Ba'ath Party – Iraq Region—which espoused Ba'athism, a mix of Arab nationalism and socialism—Saddam played a key role in the 1968 coup (later referred to as the 17 July Revolution) that brought the party to power in Iraq.
As vice president under the ailing General Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and at a time when many groups were considered capable of overthrowing the government, Saddam created security forces through which he tightly controlled conflict between the government and the armed forces. In the early 1970s, Saddam nationalized oil and other industries. The state-owned banks were put under his control, leaving the system eventually insolvent mostly due to the Iran–Iraq War, the Gulf War, and UN sanctions. Through the 1970s, Saddam cemented his authority over the apparatuses of government as oil money helped Iraq's economy to grow at a rapid pace. Positions of power in the country were mostly filled with Sunni Arabs, a minority that made up only a fifth of the population.

Global Guardian
Global Guardian is an annual training exercise sponsored by the United States Strategic Command in conjunction with Air Force Space Command and NORAD. Its main purpose is to test the military's command and control procedures in the event of nuclear warfare.
Global Guardian is performed in conjunction with "Vigilant Guardian", the annual training exercise conducted by NORAD in which a threat to North American airspace is simulated. The simulated scenario is varied from year to year.
Global Guardian and the September 11 Attacks
The September 11 attacks in 2001 occurred during that year's Global Guardian and Vigilant Guardian joint exercises. That year, according to the 9/11 Commission Report, Vigilant Guardian 'postulated a bomber attack from the former Soviet Union' on North America. The Russian 37th Air Army was, in fact, conducting major bomber exercises across the Arctic and Atlantic at this time, amongst the largest carried out by them since 1993. Both the American and the Russian exercises were cancelled after the attack.

September 11 attacks
The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11) were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda on the United States on the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The attacks consisted of suicide attacks used to target symbolic U.S. landmarks.
Four passenger airliners—which all departed from airports on the U.S. East Coast bound for California—were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists to be flown into buildings. Two of the planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Within an hour and 42 minutes, both 110-story towers collapsed, with debris and the resulting fires causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the World Trade Center complex, including the 47-story 7 World Trade Center tower, as well as significant damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia, leading to a partial collapse in the Pentagon's western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, initially was steered toward Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In total, the attacks claimed the lives of 2,996 people (including the 19 hijackers) and caused at least $10 billion in property and infrastructure damage and $3 trillion in total costs. It was the deadliest incident for firefighters and law enforcement officers in the history of the United States, with 343 and 72 killed respectively.

We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). America said its strategy for Iraq would be to 'shock and awe' the country into submission. Within hours of President Bush giving the order to attack, bombs and missiles were raining down on Baghdad on a scale the world had never seen before. One year on, APTN has been talking to some of the pilots who flew on those first missions - and to some of the Iraqis who witnessed the bombardment from the ground. This was how the war started from onboard the US aircraft carrier USS Constellation in the Gulf. This is how it looked from the skies over Iraq. And this is how it felt on the ground in Baghdad. Many of the pilots who took part in 'shock and awe' missions are based at the Lemoore naval air station, 200 miles north of Los Angeles Jeff Rocha is the commander of Strike Fighter Wing, US Pacific Fleet. He was involved in planning the first attacks, helped to select targets, and personally flew missions over Baghdad on the opening night. A year on, he insists that despite the massive amount of firepower deployed during the 'shock and awe' phase of the war, American pilots did everything possible to minimise civilian casualties. "The bottom line is, we told our guys it's better to bring the bombs home, than to drop them somewhere if they're not sure that's the target they were going after," said Rocha. "We got a lot of that. We got a lot of guys saying 'I can't confirm that's the right target, I'm going to bring the bombs home' The al-Mansour district of Baghdad felt the full force of American airpower when US warplanes attacked a house where it was thought Saddam Hussein was sheltering. Four tons of explosives were deployed, reducing the building to rubble. Iraq said 14 people died. The shock and awe strategy may have been terrifying for civilians, but US officials insist it helped to shorten the war. During the hunt for Saddam Hussein Lindsey Hilsum and her team encounter civilians who had been killed or injured in the fighting – including 5-year-old Zahra who had been shot in the head by American snipers.
She was rescued by Channel 4 News’ translator Mohammed and then treated by the Americans.
Zahra later recovered and moved to Kurdistan with her family. Mohammed was killed in in Iraq in 2004.

You'll notice a couple of small details are different than Hitchens remembers. The audience is larger, and the confessor does not come in wearing chains (metaphorically, perhaps, but not literally.) We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). Sadly, the bloodbath for Iraqis and the region was only just beginning.
Remember: Fascism means war.

STORYLINE:
One year ago, a new expression entered the lexicon of war. America said its strategy for Iraq would be to 'shock and awe' the country into submission. Within hours of President Bush giving the order to attack, bombs and missiles were raining down on Baghdad on a scale the world had never seen before.
One year on, APTN has been talking to some of the pilots who flew on those first missions - and to some of the Iraqis who witnessed the bombardment from the ground.
This was how the war started from onboard the US aircraft carrier USS Constellation in the Gulf. This is how it looked from the skies over Iraq. And this is how it felt on the ground in Baghdad.
Many of the pilots who took part in 'shock and awe' missions are based at the Lemoore naval air station, 200 miles north of Los Angeles
Jeff Rocha is the commander of Strike Fighter Wing, US Pacific Fleet. He was involved in planning the first attacks, helped to select targets, and personally flew missions over Baghdad on the opening night.
A year on, he insists that despite the massive amount of firepower deployed during the 'shock and awe' phase of the war, American pilots did everything possible to minimise civilian casualties.
"The bottom line is, we told our guys it's better to bring the bombs home, than to drop them somewhere if they're not sure that's the target they were going after," said Rocha. "We got a lot of that. We got a lot of guys saying 'I can't confirm that's the right target, I'm going to bring the bombs home'
The al-Mansour district of Baghdad felt the full force of American airpower when US warplanes attacked a house where it was thought Saddam Hussein was sheltering. Four tons of explosives were deployed, reducing the building to rubble. Iraq said 14 people died.
The shock and awe strategy may have been terrifying for civilians, but US officials insist it helped to shorten the war.

After spending nine months on the run, former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein is captured on this day in 2003. Saddam’s downfall began on March 20, 2003, when the United States led an invasion force into Iraq to topple his government, which had controlled the country for more than 20 years.
Saddam Hussein was born into a poor family in Tikrit, 100 miles outside of Baghdad, in 1937. After moving to Baghdad as a teenager, Saddam joined the now-infamous Baath party, which he would later lead. He participated in several coup attempts, finally helping to install his cousin as dictator of Iraq in July 1968. Saddam took over for his cousin 11 years later. During his 24 years in office, Saddam’s secret police, charged with protecting his power, terrorized the public, ignoring the human rights of the nation’s citizens. While many of his people faced poverty, he lived in incredible luxury, building more than 20 lavish palaces throughout the country. Obsessed with security, he is said to have moved among them often, always sleeping in secret locations.

Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's eldest son Uday accused the United States of arrogance and acting like "cowboys" during a speech on Iraqi TV on Thursday.
Uday also said there was "no weight" to British Prime Minister Tony Blair recent speech on Iraq's chemical and biological weapon capability.
In a dossier published earlier this week, Blair said Saddam's stockpile of biological and chemical weapons is growing and that Iraq has taken steps to develop nuclear weapons.
Uday made his comments during a meeting with Iraqi student union leaders in Baghdad, and it was broadcast on al-Shabab television - a youth channel he owns.

Iraq's former oil minister and nuclear scientist Hussain Al-Shahristani spoke in an interview to the BBC World Service Radio about how he spent ten years in solitary confinement under Saddam Hussein.

The Iraqi Oil Minister ("Solitary Confinement")
Iraq's former oil minister and nuclear scientist Hussain Al-Shahristani spoke in an interview to the BBC World Service Radio about how he spent ten years in solitary confinement under Saddam Hussein.
I had the pleasure to create a concept and visualize a film with this interview excerpt for BBC World Service Radio’s new television campaign via agency Fallon London and my UK production company Independent.

Born in Italy, orphaned when he was 4 months old (parents died in a plane crash, in sabotage ordered by Mobutu Sese Seko), Enzo has spend most of his life in Democratic Republic of Congo (than: Zaire), where he started his musical career. He visited 48 countries (played concert for Saddam Hussein), got himself into troubles during election period in Kinshasa.
He had to leave Congo after being sentenced 10 years of prison by followers of President Joseph Kabila. Enzo fled after being tortured (as he claims, he has bribed police officers) and managed to get to Istanbul, Turkey via Nairobi, Kenya. He haven't reached his destination (Paris), as he was denied to cross European Union's border in Istanbul's airport.
He tries to start new life (again) in Istanbul, having better and worst moments. His album "Red, Black and White" has been waiting for approval signature in Turkish ministry since the beginning of 2011.

"All our lives are about constantly losing. The moment is always disappearing, like sand between our fingers. So what is it, we are actually left with?," asks British sculptor Phyllida Barlow.
The language of sculpture is not about perfection or exactness, according to Phyllida Barlow (b. 1944). It's about approximation, about recovering moments. "I like the language of sculpture which is about space and time, smell and temperature. Opposite photography, sculpture constantly rejects the single image because of the way you walk around it. Oddly enough sculpture, despite it's physicality, constantly disappears. You walk past it and it's gone. You come back to it and you discover it in a new way. The powerful emotional impact is all in the moment."
Furthermore, Barlow reflects on her recent commission for the enormous Duveen Galleries at Tate Britain - a space that is reminiscent of a cathedral and reflects the pomposity and political power of 19th century Britain. "I wanted to confront the incredible arrogance of that space with something that has gone and disappeared. I have always been interested in fallen monuments. We have lived in a decade and a half now with monuments collapsing. Maybe beginning with the Twin Towers in New York, and going on to the collapse of Saddam Hussein's monuments and then the Buddhas of Afghanistan. That's what fascinates me about sculpture - its idea of monumentalism and its ability to collapse. Something that is slightly off-balance and precarious."
Barlow has been a professor of art for more than forty years. In 2011 she was elected to the Royal Academy. After having retired from teaching at the Slade School of Fine Art, her own artistic career has received a major boost. In an interview with the British newspaper, The Independent, Barlow said: "I wasn't ready 10 to 15 years ago to do that, but when you get older, you finally don't mind if you make a fool of yourself." At the same time, Barlow stays modest: "Let's go back to cave-painting. The desire to bring into those dark spaces an idea of representation, something seen and experienced and recorded - to make evidence of that. And that is what I feel my work is about: evidencing something about the world I am living in now. But it's using a language that I think is as old as the hills."

"All our lives are about constantly losing. The moment is always disappearing, like sand between our fingers. So what is it, we are actually left with?," asks British sculptor Phyllida Barlow.
The language of sculpture is not about perfection or exactness, according to Phyllida Barlow (b. 1944). It's about approximation, about recovering moments. "I like the language of sculpture which is about space and time, smell and temperature. Opposite photography, sculpture constantly rejects the single image because of the way you walk around it. Oddly enough sculpture, despite it's physicality, constantly disappears. You walk past it and it's gone. You come back to it and you discover it in a new way. The powerful emotional impact is all in the moment."
Furthermore, Barlow reflects on her recent commission for the enormous Duveen Galleries at Tate Britain - a space that is reminiscent of a cathedral and reflects the pomposity and political power of 19th century Britain. "I wanted to confront the incredible arrogance of that space with something that has gone and disappeared. I have always been interested in fallen monuments. We have lived in a decade and a half now with monuments collapsing. Maybe beginning with the Twin Towers in New York, and going on to the collapse of Saddam Hussein's monuments and then the Buddhas of Afghanistan. That's what fascinates me about sculpture - its idea of monumentalism and its ability to collapse. Something that is slightly off-balance and precarious."
Barlow has been a professor of art for more than forty years. In 2011 she was elected to the Royal Academy. After having retired from teaching at the Slade School of Fine Art, her own artistic career has received a major boost. In an interview with the British newspaper, The Independent, Barlow said: "I wasn't ready 10 to 15 years ago to do that, but when you get older, you finally don't mind if you make a fool of yourself." At the same time, Barlow stays modest: "Let's go back to cave-painting. The desire to bring into those dark spaces an idea of representation, something seen and experienced and recorded - to make evidence of that. And that is what I feel my work is about: evidencing something about the world I am living in now. But it's using a language that I think is as old as the hills."

William Henry discusses historical, geopolitical, and supernatural aspects of the lost Ark of the Covenant, and its possible connection to end times prophecies. The Ark is traditionally thought of as a rectangular container made by Moses to contain holy books and other items, but Henry believes it's actually a component of a larger, powerful Judgment Day device. He suggested that this device can operate as an otherworldly ascension tool, transmuting a person upon contact into a body of light, who can then travel the universe. It's really a "throne of God," which facilitates the manifestation of luminous beings that can appear on the Earth plane, he continued.
Henry contended that the Ark is not currently on Earth, but will be brought here by advanced beings who use it like a stargate. Yet, various countries such as Iran and Israel may be seeking out the Ark, he said. Israel's recent operation in Gaza was called "Operation Pillar of Cloud," which is a direct reference to the Ark, he commented. Further, the Ark was a factor in the Iraq war-- "there's no doubt that's why we wanted to stop Saddam Hussein-- this is the weapon of mass destruction," he argued. And Ayatollah Khamenei, the spiritual leader of Shi’ite Islam in Iran, believes he is divinely ordained to introduce the Islamic messiah, the Mahdi, who will recover and reveal the Ark.
In July, 2012 Khamenei told the Iranian people to prepare for Judgment Day and the imminent return of the Mahdi. Various prophecies speak of the appearance of a great sign before the Second Coming, and Henry believes the re-emergence of the Ark of the Covenant is that sign. Am 16. Mai 2016 veröffentlichte die US-amerikanische Denkfabrik „Center for a New American Security“ – kurz CNAS und zu Deutsch „Zentrum für eine Neue Amerikanische Sicherheit“ – ein 22-seitiges Strategiepapier. Dieses gilt als Fahrplan für die Außenpolitik Hillary Clintons, wenn sie als US-Präsidentin vereidigt werden sollte.
Neben einigen Alternativmedien hat sich nun als eine der einzigen etablierten Leitmedien der „Tages-Anzeiger“, eine der einflussreichsten Schweizer Zeitungen, mit dem Strategiepapier befasst. Am 21. Oktober 2016 publizierte der „Tages-Anzeiger“ ein Interview, das er mit dem deutschen Geographen und Experten für internationale Politik Günter Meyer führte. Meyer leitet das „Zentrum für Forschung zur Arabischen Welt“ (ZERAW) an der Universität Mainz.
Günter Meyer analysierte das Strategiepapier der CNAS. Was ist ein Indiz dafür, dass es sich bei diesem Strategiepapier um die außenpolitische Agenda Hillary Clintons handeln könnte, sollte sie als Präsidentin gewählt sein?
Günter Meyer weist darauf hin, dass die politisch äußerst einflussreiche Denkfabrik von Michele Flournoy geleitet wird, einer ehemaligen Staatssekretärin für Verteidigung. Sie hat nicht nur eng mit US-Präsident Barack Obama zusammengearbeitet, sondern gilt auch als aussichtsreichste Kandidatin für das Amt des Verteidigungsministers, falls Hillary Clinton zur Präsidentin gewählt werde.
Auch trage das Strategiepapier den richtungweisenden Titel: „Stärkung der amerikanischen Macht. Strategien zur Ausweitung des US-Engagements in einer hart umkämpften Weltordnung“.
Diese Zielsetzung vertrete Clinton bereits seit längerem und es sei ihr damit gelungen, im Wahlkampf zahlreiche Republikaner auf ihre Seite zu ziehen. Abgesehen von den engen persönlichen Beziehungen zwischen der Präsidentschaftskandidatin und den Autoren des Papiers, setze das Papier die militärische Einmischungspolitik in die Belange anderer Staaten fort, für die Clinton bisher eingestanden sei.
Günter Meyer zählte nun einige Beispiele dafür auf, Zitat:
– „Clinton hat 2003 die völkerrechtswidrige Invasion im Irak zum Sturz von Saddam Hussein und zur Sicherung des dortigen Erdöls für US-Konzerne nachdrücklich befürwortet. Ergebnis der militärischen Intervention: mehr als 100.000 Tote, ein im Bürgerkrieg versinkendes Land und die Entstehung des IS.
– Als Außenministerin gab Clinton im Jahr 2011 den Ausschlag dafür, dass Obama dem Angriff auf Libyen zugestimmt hat, um auch dort einen Regimewechsel gewaltsam durchzusetzen. Das Resultat ist ein gescheiterter Staat ohne baldige Aussicht auf eine politische Stabilisierung.
– Ehe Clinton 2012 aus ihrem Amt ausschied, heizte sie den Aufstand gegen Bashar al-Assad in Syrien durch verdeckte Aktionen gegen das Regime an. In ihren bei Wikileaks veröffentlichten E-Mails erklärt sie den Sturz von Assad als Ziel. Dabei wurde sogar die Ausbreitung der jihadistischen Extremisten, des späteren Islamischen Staates (IS), begrüßt, wie die auf gerichtliche Anordnung veröffentlichten Dokumente des militärischen Geheimdienstes DIA belegen.“
Aus dem Scheitern dieser militärischen Interventionen, um den Sturz missliebiger Herrscher zu erzwingen, habe Clinton offenbar die Konsequenz gezogen, kommentiert Meyer. Nämlich, dass in Zukunft die Überlegenheit der US-Streitkräfte noch wesentlich massiver zum Einsatz kommen müsse, um außenpolitische Ziele zu erreichen. Das würden viele ihrer Äußerungen im Wahlkampf belegen, und genau diese Linie vertrete auch das Strategiepapier. […]
Angesprochen auf den Syrienkrieg, ob Clinton eine direkte Konfrontation mit Russland riskieren würde, wies Meyer auf die von Clinton nach wie vor geforderte Einrichtung einer Flugverbotszone hin. Dazu sei die Zerstörung der syrischen Luftwaffenbasen durch Marschflugkörper geplant. Dies würde Russland kaum hinnehmen und es habe bereits zahlreiche Abwehrsysteme in Syrien installiert. Die Einrichtung und Durchsetzung einer Flugverbotszone in Syrien würde unvermeidlich zu einer direkten militärischen Konfrontation der beiden Nuklearmächte führen. Ob Clinton dies tatsächlich in Kauf nehmen wird, bleibe abzuwarten.

During the hunt for Saddam Hussein Lindsey Hilsum and her team encounter civilians who had been killed or injured in the fighting – including 5-year-old Zahra who had been shot in the head by American snipers. She was rescued by Channel 4 News’ translator Mohammed and then treated by the Americans. Zahra later recovered and moved to Kurdistan with her family. Mohammed was killed in in Iraq in 2004. Iraq's 1979 Fascist Coup, Narrated by Christopher Hitchens
Archival footage married with part of a Christopher Hitchens speech, showing Saddam Hussein's final purge of the Iraqi Baath Party leadership. You'll notice a couple of small details are different than Hitchens remembers. The audience is larger, and the confessor does not come in wearing chains (metaphorically, perhaps, but not literally.) We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). Sadly, the bloodbath for Iraqis and the region was only just beginning. Remember: Fascism means war. The speech is entitled "Axis of Evil" and can be found on fora.tv and here on youtube. RIP, Hitch.

She was rescued by Channel 4 News’ translator Mohammed and then treated by the Americans.
Zahra later recovered and moved to Kurdistan with her family. Mohammed was killed in in Iraq in 2004.

We don't know exactly how many hundreds of party members were killed in this purge in the whole of Iraq, but of the 68 taken out of this room on July 22, 1979, at least 22 were executed (by their fellow party members). Sadly, the bloodbath for Iraqis and the region was only just beginning.

STORYLINE:
One year ago, a new expression entered the lexicon of war. America said its strategy for Iraq would be to 'shock and awe' the country into submission. Within hours of President Bush giving the order to attack, bombs and missiles were raining down on Baghdad on a scale the world had never seen before.
One year on, APTN has been talking to some of the pilots who flew on those first missions - and to some of the Iraqis who witnessed the bombardment from the ground.
This was how the war started from onboard the US aircraft carrier USS Constellation in the Gulf. This is how it looked from the skies over Iraq. And this is how it felt on the ground in Baghdad.
Many of the pilots who took part in 'shock and awe' missions are based at the Lemoore naval air station, 200 miles north of Los Angeles
Jeff Rocha is the commander of Strike Fighter Wing, US Pacific Fleet. He was involved in planning the first attacks, helped to select targets, and personally flew missions over Baghdad on the opening night.
A year on, he insists that despite the massive amount of firepower deployed during the 'shock and awe' phase of the war, American pilots did everything possible to minimise civilian casualties.
"The bottom line is, we told our guys it's better to bring the bombs home, than to drop them somewhere if they're not sure that's the target they were going after," said Rocha. "We got a lot of that. We got a lot of guys saying 'I can't confirm that's the right target, I'm going to bring the bombs home'
The al-Mansour district of Baghdad felt the full force of American airpower when US warplanes attacked a house where it was thought Saddam Hussein was sheltering. Four tons of explosives were deployed, reducing the building to rubble. Iraq said 14 people died.
The shock and awe strategy may have been terrifying for civilians, but US officials insist it helped to shorten the war.
