The ozone layer is a layer in Earth's atmosphere containing relatively high concentrations of ozone (O3). However, "relatively high," in the case of ozone, is still very small with regard to ordinary oxygen, and is less than 10 parts per million, with the average ozone concentration in Earth's atmosphere being only about 0.6 parts per million. The ozone layer is mainly located in the lower portion of the stratosphere from approximately 20 to 30 kilometres (12 to 19 mi) above Earth, though the thickness varies seasonally and geographically.
The ozone layer was discovered in 1913 by the French physicists Charles Fabry and Henri Buisson. Its properties were explored in detail by the British meteorologist G. M. B. Dobson, who developed a simple spectrophotometer (the Dobsonmeter) that could be used to measure stratospheric ozone from the ground. Between 1928 and 1958 Dobson established a worldwide network of ozone monitoring stations, which continue to operate to this day. The "Dobson unit", a convenient measure of the columnar density of ozone overhead, is named in his honor.

Ozone layer 'shows signs of recovery' - BBC News
The Earth's protective ozone layer is starting to repair itself, according to a panel of United Nations scientists. The main reason behind its recovery, they say, is the fact that certain chemicals, such as those used in aerosol cans, were phased out in the 1980s.

While the ozone hole has been considered by some as a solved problem, in fact its recovery is still many decades away and the effects and interactions of ozone depletion on climate change are just starting to be understood.
On the 16th September 2011, embark on an investigative journey through the history and science of the ozone layer, the actions taken to address this major environmental threat and the consequences both for the ozone layer and climate system.
This short film seeks out explanations and answers from the scientists closest to the issue.

So, How Bad Can It Get? Just when it seemed the negative news surrounding global geoengineering could not get any worse, it absolutely can and is.
We have known for some time that the UV levels were getting rapidly worse due to the ongoing atmospheric spraying. Anyone that is even slightly awake and aware has noticed that the sun feels incredibly intense on the skin. Most varieties of plant life are showing at least some signs of stress in most areas. In many regions, whole forests are in steep decline. And its getting worse by the day.
Although extreme drought and toxic rains (due in large part to the heavy metal fallout from geoengineering) are taking their toll, recent metering of UV levels in Northern California indicate that there is an element in this die off that is far worse than we had realized, an incomprehensibly high level of UV radiation.
With the assistance of a very generous and conscientious individual, geoengineeringwatch.org purchased top-of-the-line UV metering equipment which was put in the hands of a 40-year environmental metering veteran, with 20 years government experience and 20 years as a private consultant. Our findings are far beyond shocking.
From a recent science study on excessive UV:
We are told UV-B is only a minor component of the total solar radiation, we now know this could not be further from the truth. Our recent metering reflects an exponential rise in UVB radiation. Due to its high energy, its potential for causing biological damage to plants, animals, and humans is exceptionally high and even small increases could lead to significant biological damage. There are numerous peer reviewed studies which verify this fact.

What is the Ozone Layer | Dr. Weston | Sunwarrior
Visit www.sunwarrior.com/news for more info.
Dr. Weston is prepared to walk you through the good and the bad about ozone. Ozone is one of those confusing words you hear thrown around to mean something beneficial and something harmful. We use it to describe the layer of our upper atmosphere that protects us from the sun’s damaging ultraviolet rays. We also use it to describe when oxygen reacts with volatile organic compounds at ground level to form the far less beneficial smog that pollutes our cities, clogs our lungs, and obstructs our views. Both ozones are a gas made of three linked oxygen atoms, but where and how they form make a huge difference in how they affect us. Beneficial ozone forms when sunlight interacts with water in waterfalls and crashing waves, from lightning storms, and when solar rays strike oxygen in the upper atmosphere. Less beneficial ozone shows up when the oxygen molecules trapped in exhaust and pollution react to sunlight. Ozone is a powerful antioxidant and disinfectant. It destroys viruses, bacteria, parasites, and fungi like yeast and mold. It is used in fridges to prevent spoilage, in pools and spas to keep them clear and clean, in water treatment plants, and even in air purifiers to reduce allergens and pathogens in the air we breathe. Use your ozone wisely and avoid contributing to smog. That will keep your interactions with this wondrous molecule only in the good zone for ozone.
Ozone is one of those confusing words. Do you kind of recognize it, but not sure from where, or what it means. One definition of Ozone is in the stratosphere, the highest layer of the atmosphere which protects the Earth by filtering and absorbing damaging UV rays from the Sun. That’s bad, by that I mean good, right? Parenthetically, when we lived in Australia where there is tremendous concern that there is a hole in this ozone shield which is causing a much higher incidence of skin cancers. The Aussie school children are required to wear large billed hats with a short curtain covering the neck, to protect them.
The most common usage of the term Ozone is to define the layer of air closest to the Earth which contains pollutants formed by the reaction of sunlight with hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides. Another name for this ozone layer is smog. You’ve heard the new watch words of greenhouse gases, global warming, and climate change? Ozone number two’s fault. That’s bad, bad, right?

Ozone layer 'shows signs of recovery' - BBC News
The Earth's protective ozone layer is starting to repair itself, according to a panel of United Nations scientists. The main reason behind its recovery, they say, is the fact that certain chemicals, such as those used in aerosol cans, were phased out in the 1980s.
Roger Harrabin reports.

The Antarctic Ozone Hole -- From Discovery to Recovery, a Scientific Journey
While the ozone hole has been considered by some as a solved problem, in fact its recovery is still many decades away and the effects and interactions of ozone depletion on climate change are just starting to be understood.
On the 16th September 2011, embark on an investigative journey through the history and science of the ozone layer, the actions taken to address this major environmental threat and the consequences both for the ozone layer and climate system.
This short film seeks out explanations and answers from the scientists closest to the issue.

Along-with beneficial rays from sun, there many harmful rays also which come from the sun. These harmful rays are known as ultraviolet rays ( uv rays) .If human skin is exposed too long to UV rays, it can cause cancer. But good news is that most of the harmful UV radiation is absorbed by a layer of ozone gas 20 -- 50 km above the Earth. But few human made chemicals are releasing few gases which are depleting the ozone layer. This video explains the whole ozone layer composition & depletion in an interesting way.
