PETA does a lot for animals, they also allegedly do a lot against animals and might not be helping out the female image much at all. You know, women's rights activists probably aren't too happy about the stripping women down and parading them around like... cattle? I suppose that's the point, the ironic point.
Anyway, overall it seems PETA wants what is best, but when it comes to activism? They're on the crap end of the stick. A lot of it is due to extremism, that behavior disables you from relating to people... bummer.

Fur farmers use the cheapest killing methods available—all of them cruel—including suffocation, electrocution, poison, or gas (as you see at this farm). Animals killed for their fur don't always die immediately, and many suffer intensely as they struggle to survive.
The fur industry would have you believe that fashion justifies such torture, but there is never any excuse for such barbaric treatment of animals.
Do you have friends or family members who still think that fur or other animal skins are fashionable? Remind them that in some countries, even cats and dogs are skinned—sometimes while still alive—for their fur, which is often mislabeled, exported, and sold to unsuspecting consumers.
