"Somewhere Out There" is a song written by James Horner, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. The song originally appeared in the 1986 animated film An American Tail. The hit single was performed by singers Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram.
Steven Spielberg, the producer of An American Tail, invited songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil to collaborate with James Horner on four songs for the film's soundtrack, to be completed in a four-week timeframe. The composers "felt no pressure to come up with a radio-friendly hit" and were surprised when Spielberg felt "Somewhere Out There" had Top 40 hit potential and recruited world-renowned recording artists, Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, to record a pop version of the song for the film's closing credits. In the main body of the film, "Somewhere Out There" was performed by Phillip Glasser and Betsy Cathcart in the characters of the anthropomorphic mice Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz.
Produced by Ronstadt's regular producer Peter Asher, the single release of the Ronstadt/Ingram track made its debut at #31 on the Adult Contemporary chart in Billboard dated 15 November 1986, crossing over to the Billboard Hot 100 dated 20 December 1986 with a #83 debut. In January 1987 "Somewhere Out There" returned Ronstadt to the Top 40 after a four-year absence to eventually peak at #2 that March. The song was kept from the top spot by "Jacob's Ladder" by Huey Lewis and the News. One of the last commercially released 45 RPM singles to be certified Gold for United States sales of over one million copies, "Somewhere Out There" was also a major UK hit (peaking at #8), marking Ronstadt's first of three appearances in the UK Top 10.
"Somewhere Out There" is a single by Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace from their fifth studio album, Gravity. It was the most successful single from the album, and is also the most internationally successful single ever released by Our Lady Peace.
The correct title of the song is indeed "Somewhere Out There", however the specific chorus lyrics "defying gravity" and the fact that the album is titled Gravity, led some to believe that the title of the song was "Gravity". The song is mislabeled as such in some search engines, lyric websites, and P2P file-sharing programs.
The song is one of Our Lady Peace's most successful singles to date, having been very popular both in Canada and the United States. Many critics praised the single, but some also criticized it for being "too mainstream", saying that the artistic uniqueness that Our Lady Peace possessed in former albums was absent here.
In one of Our Lady Peace's most recent albums, A Decade, which includes many of Our Lady Peace's greatest hits, "Somewhere Out There" is featured. The song is also featured on Now That's What I Call Music! 11.

Every time I’ve got an hour on my hands I hope you feel me
Every now and then I understand the fact that you believed me
How can I go on
If you don’t come along to set me off
I don’t know nothing
How can I move on when I am half as strong
Without your strength
I don’t know nothing
Cause you’re not in my world to ease my worries
And you can’t be the one I turn to
Who’s gonna watch over me if not you
Will you’re memory live on inside me
Ever since you went away I wondered why the world kept turning
Every time I think of you I feel the flame that keeps on burning
How can I go on
If you don’t come along to set me off
I don’t know nothing
How can I move on when I am half as strong
Without your strength
I don’t know nothing
Though you’re not in my world to ease my worries
And you can’t be the one I turn to
You’re gonna watch over me I feel you
Cause your memory lives on inside of me
You must be out there
Though you’re not in my world to ease my worries
You must be out there
And you can’t be the one I turn to
You must be out there
You’re gonna watch over me I feel you
You must be out there
Cause your memory lives on inside of me
