Science Hill High School

Science Hill High School is a high school (grades 9-12) in Johnson City, Tennessee, United States, with an enrollment of approximately 2600 students. The school is split over four campuses: 9th grade academy; 10-12 Campus; Technical Center Campus; & Alternative School Campus. The school also shares space with Freedom Hall Civic Center. The school site also includes tennis courts, baseball fields, soccer field, track facilities, and football stadium. The school administration consists of one principal, one associate principal, five assistant principals, one vocational school director, and one athletic director. The school has approximately 180 teachers. Science Hill High School offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Also, in the 2008-2009 school year, Science Hill began the Tri-Cities second International Baccalaureate (IB) Program. Their mascot is the Hilltopper, an anthropomorphic top hat called the "mad hatter". Science Hill also has one of the areas oldest JROTC programs.

Science Hill (Yale University)

Science Hill is a precinct of the Yale University campus primarily devoted to physical and biological sciences, contained in the Prospect Hill neighborhood of New Haven, Connecticut. Originally a 36-acre residential estate known as Sachem's Wood, it was purchased by the university in 1910 and has been allocated to large-footprint buildings for scientific laboratories and the main buildings of the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Geography

The topography of present-day Science Hill was primarily formed during the Wisconsinan glaciation. The Laurentide ice sheet flattened the soft sandstone of New Haven Harbor but had less effect on its surrounding, hard trap rock formations like East Rock and West Rock. Science Hill is a portion of a sandstone drumlin that was sheltered from glacial erosion by a traprock ridge, Mill Rock, to its north. The south–north rise of Science Hill is approximately 80 feet (24 m) at a 4.5% grade, processing northward to a peak elevation of 150 feet (46 m) above sea level near the Yale Divinity School.

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."
