In physics, fluid dynamics is a sub-discipline of fluid mechanics that deals with fluid flow—the natural science of fluids (liquids and gases) in motion. It has several subdisciplines itself, including aerodynamics (the study of air and other gases in motion) and hydrodynamics (the study of liquids in motion). Fluid dynamics has a wide range of applications, including calculating forces and moments on aircraft, determining the mass flow rate of petroleum through pipelines, predicting weather patterns, understanding nebulae in interstellar space and reportedly modeling fission weapon detonation. Some of its principles are even used in traffic engineering, where traffic is treated as a continuous fluid.
Fluid dynamics offers a systematic structure—which underlies these practical disciplines—that embraces empirical and semi-empirical laws derived from flow measurement and used to solve practical problems. The solution to a fluid dynamics problem typically involves calculating various properties of the fluid, such as velocity, pressure, density, and temperature, as functions of space and time.

The cerebrospinal fluid or CSF is the liquid that bathes the central nervous system (the brain and the spinal cord).
The CSF ensures:
- The protection of the central nervous system against mechanical shocks and vibrations.
- it plays an important role in the regulation of intracranial pressure.
- It participates in the cerebral metabolic processes by regulating the exchange of substances. and, provides many other functions as well.
The CSF circulates in two different compartments:
- The first is the inner brain ependymal cavities or ventricles,
- the second is the compartment surrounding the central nervous system, it corresponds to the sub-arachnoid space.
The CSF is secreted by the choroid plexus: clusters of capillary blood vessels located in the ventricular system.
The ventricular system consists of four ventricles connected by many channels.
It is connected to the central canal of the spinal cord.
There are two lateral ventricles, occupying the center of the cerebral hemispheres. Both are connected to the third ventricle at the center of the diencephalon by the foramina of Monro.
The third ventricle is connected to the fourth ventricle in the brainstem by the aqueduct of Sylvius.
The CSF will leave the fourth ventricle through the foramen of Magendie to fill the sub-arachnoid space between the pia mater and the arachnoid.
The CSF is then absorbed at the top of the skull by the arachnoid granulations of Pakioni.

This video illustrates the analysis of a rigid spool using Flexcom, a component which is typically found at the base of a deepwater hybrid riser tower.
Multi-phase gas and liquid flow can cause cyclic loading, ultimately leading to fatigue damage. This can be a critical issue for spool design, due to their multi-planar configuration, long free spans, and 90 degree bends.
Flexcom has a detailed internal fluid and slug flow modelling capability, stemming from a recent Joint Industry Project led by MCS Kenny.
The software can accurately model centrifugal, coriolis and dynamic pressure effects caused by internal fluid flow. Slug properties such as density and velocity may vary over time, in order to simulate the complex flow regimes experienced by spools.
Flexcom uses colour contouring to graphically display element forces, such as bending moment, and this provides the engineer with an intuitive visual representation of the finite element results.
Flexcom automatically increases the number of integration points within every element which is partially filled with liquid and gas. This ensures a precise distribution of the applied forces, and means that relatively long elements may still be used without compromising the accuracy of the slug flow model.

Flexcom 8 - Rigid Spool
This video illustrates the analysis of a rigid spool using Flexcom, a component which is typically found at the base of a deepwater hybrid riser tower. Multi-phase gas and liquid flow can cause cyclic loading, ultimately leading to fatigue damage. This can be a critical issue for spool design, due to their multi-planar configuration, long free spans, and 90 degree bends. Flexcom has a detailed internal fluid and slug flow modelling capability, stemming from a recent Joint Industry Project led by MCS Kenny. The software can accurately model centrifugal, coriolis and dynamic pressure effects caused by internal fluid flow. Slug properties such as density and velocity may vary over time, in order to simulate the complex flow regimes experienced by spools. Flexcom uses colour contouring to graphically display element forces, such as bending moment, and this provides the engineer with an intuitive visual representation of the finite element results. Flexcom automatically increases the number of integration points within every element which is partially filled with liquid and gas. This ensures a precise distribution of the applied forces, and means that relatively long elements may still be used without compromising the accuracy of the slug flow model. Flexcom uses realistic vessel profiles to provide enhanced visual appeal. You may choose from a range of standard floating platforms, or insert your own customised vessel. Flexcom uses detailed coupled analysis to model floating bodies such as calm buoys. High frequency first order wave forces and low frequency second order wave drift effects may all be modelled. Model building is very straightforward with Flexcom. Although this model is very complex and contains over 3000 elements, it is very easy to assemble in Flexcom using the line modelling feature. Flexcom provides a premium pipe-in-pipe modelling feature which has underpinned the engineering design of some of the world's most complex riser bundle configurations. Although not utilized in this model, it is also possible to model Sliding Contact. For example, to simulate a flexible riser passing through a J-Tube. Internal fluid flow can be a critical issue for flow line and spool design. Flexcom has a detailed flow model, catering for centrifugal, coriolas and dynamic pressure effects.
