The Jogye Order, officially the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism (대한불교조계종, 大韓佛敎 曹溪宗) is the representative order of traditional Korean Buddhism with roots that date back 1,200 years to Unified Silla National Master Doui, who brought Seon (known as Zen in the West) and the practice taught by the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng, from China about 820 C.E.
In 1994, the Jogye order managed 1,725 temples, 10,056 clerics and had 9,125,991 adherents.
In 826, the "Nine Mountains of Seon" adopted the name Jogye, which is the Cantonese village where Patriarch Huineng's home temple is located. They all were instrumental in the development of the nation during Unified Silla and thereafter. During Goryeo, National Masters Bojo Jinul and Taego Bou led major Seon movements. The Jogye Order was thus established as the representative Seon order until the persecution of the Joseon Dynasty.
For nearly 500 years, however, Buddhism was repressed in favor of Confucianism. During the reign of Joseon King Sejong (r. 1418-1450), two sects were formed, one of all the doctrinal schools and another of all the Seon schools. These were then temporarily disbanded under the reign of King Yonsangun (r. 1494-1506), resulting in great confusion. However, during the Hideyoshi invasions of the late 16th century, National Masters Seosan and Samyeong raised armies that protected the nation which improved the situation of Buddhism for a time. However it was not until the political reforms of 1895 that monks were permitted in the cities again. Then in 1899, under the leadership of Seon Master Gyeongheo (1849-1912), monks petitioned from Haeinsa Temple to reestablish the traditions and the philosophical basis for a reconstructed Buddhist order. Eventually, the Wonjong and Imjejong (Linji) orders were founded, and attempts were made to revive the doctrinal schools and to reestablish activities in the cities, but these movements were soon suppressed during the Japanese occupation, which began in 1910.

It′s celebration to mark Buddha′s birthday.
Hundreds of people made their way to Jogye-sa temple, to hear the celebratory message delivered by the head of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the largest Buddhist sect in the nation.
In this year′s message, the Venerable Jaseung commemorated the 70th anniversary of Korea′s independence from Japanese colonization... and called on the two Koreas to build trust through exchanges.
″It is painful that the two Koreas have been confronting each other for the past 70 years. We must end this conflict. The Jogye Order is proposing three pathways to reunification: coexistence, harmony and united minds.″
He added the reunification of the two Koreas is no longer just Korea′s wish, but the wish of people around the world.
″Yearning for peace and the reunification of the two Koreas, a joint South and North Korea prayer was presented for the first time in four years.″
″We must work toward carrying out the landmark statements signed by both South and North Korea such as the July 4th, June 15th and October 4th North-South Declarations. That is the way our nation will head toward peace and prosperity.″
Those who came out on this special day also participated in the ″bathing of the Buddha″ ritual,... in which they pour water over a statue of a baby Buddha to pray for peace, wellness and for their wishes to come true.
″I′m praying for the well being of our family, for everyone to be healthy and my friends and relatives to prosper.″
Everyone who made the trip to one of the 20-thousand Buddhist temples around the country today seemed to have the same purpose to be happy and enjoy the sunshine on what was a beautiful spring day.

Celebrating Buddha′s Birthday, this documentary unveils the activities of clergywomen and life for prison inmates. How are the lives of inmates forced to wear blue prison uniforms different from that of Buddhist nuns who entered the monkhood on their own volition? Why do nuns of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, Catholic nuns and Won Buddhist nuns helping inmates in these correctional facilities call themselves Suhaengja nuns? To find the answer to this question, Arirang TV investigates their theological beliefs ranging from non-possession, respect for all living creatures, moral duty and so on. With permission from the Yeoju Correctional Facility and cooperation with the Ministry of Justice, the show sheds light on the purpose of life among prison inmates. Performances given by the Samsohwe Club, an association of nuns from different religions who dedicate themselves to world peace and religion unity, ″Du Bun,″ a hip-hop group, and ″Happy Force,″ an all-housewife Nanta group, entertain inmates while providing a vital emotional connection. Soulful Journey is an Arirang TV documentary special for Buddha′s Birthday that delves into the meaning of life.

Hundreds celebrate Buddha′s birthday at Jogye-sa temple in Seoul
부처님 오신 날, 수백명
Today is a special day for Buddhists in Korea.
It′s Buddha′s birthday his 2-thousand 5-hundred-fifty-ninth,... for those of you keeping track.
Hundreds of people in Seoul from the faithful to the curious celebrated the occasion at Jogye-sa temple.
Connie Kim was there and brings us this report.
