Media City is a broad term that may refer to a diversity of phenomena, from specific real estate developments like MediaCityUK and Dubai Media City, to sociological/theoretical frameworks for the contemporary information- and media-rich urban environment (e.g. the work of Manuel Castells), to an EU-funded research project based in the departments of Architecture, Media and Urban Sociology at the Bauhaus University, Weimar, Germany.
According to Shannon Mattern, the Media City "is typically presented by scholars and designers as a product of modern times and modern technology — a spatial construction that came into being with the rise of photography and film and is evolving into our sentient cities of tomorrow."
Digital media are any media that are encoded in a machine-readable format. Digital media can be created, viewed, distributed, modified and preserved on computers. Computer programs and software; digital imagery, digital video; video games; web pages and websites, including social media; data and databases; digital audio, such as mp3s; and e-books are examples of digital media. Digital media are frequently contrasted with print media, such as printed books, newspapers and magazines, and other traditional or analog media, such as pictures, film or audio tape.
Combined with the Internet and personal computing, digital media has caused disruption in publishing, journalism, entertainment, education, commerce and politics. Digital media has also posed new challenges to copyright and intellectual property laws, fostering an open content movement in which content creators voluntarily give up some or all of their legal rights to their work. The ubiquity of digital media and its effects on society suggest that we are at the start of a new era in industrial history, called the Information Age, perhaps leading to a paperless society in which all media are produced and consumed on computers. However, challenges to a digital transition remain, including outdated copyright laws, censorship, the digital divide, and the specter of a digital dark age, in which older media becomes inaccessible to new or upgraded information systems. Digital media has a significant, wide-ranging and complex impact on society and culture.
Digital Media City (DMC; Korean: 디지털미디어시티) is a high-tech complex for digital technologies, housing ubiquitous networked offices, apartments, exhibitions, conference halls and cultural centers in Seoul, South Korea. It was constructed in 2002 across 570,000 m2 (6,100,000 sq ft) and approximately 1.7 times the size of the Canary Wharf development in London, United Kingdom. It is a high-tech city centered on Digital Media Street for broadcasting, movies, games, music, e-learning and related industries. It attracted well-known IT companies such as LG Telecom, Pantech and LG CNS, as well as various kinds of public exhibition facilities including the Korean Film Archive and the Korean Film Museum.
It is served by the Digital Media City Station on Seoul Subway Line 6, AREX and Gyeongui Line.
Residents of the Digital Media City are nicknamed Denizens (Digital Citizen) for their constant enthusiasm and interaction with high-tech digital technologies.
One of the original advisors on the development was Michael Joroff of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who also advises on the development of MediaCityUK in Salford, Greater Manchester, England, and Digital Mile in Zaragoza, Spain.
