Cheonggyecheon (Hangul: 청계천) is an 8.4 km (5.2 miles) long, modern public recreation space in downtown Seoul, South Korea. The massive urban renewal project is on the site of a stream that flowed before the rapid post-wareconomic development required it to be covered by transportation infrastructure. The $900 million project initially attracted much public criticism but, after opening in 2005, has become popular among city residents and tourists.
The stream was named Gaecheon ("open stream") after the first refurbishment project to construct a drainage system during the Joseon Dynasty. The work, which included dredging and bolstering the banks of the stream and building the bridges, was carried out every 2~3 years during this period from the reign of Taejong, the third king of the Joseon Dynasty. King Yeonjo especially undertook the refurbishment work as a national project.

Reduces the urban heat island effect with temperatures along the stream 3.3° to 5.9°C cooler than on a parallel road 4-7 blocks away. This results from the removal of the paved expressway, the cooling effect of the stream, increased vegetation, reduction in auto trips, and a 2.2-7.8% increase in wind speeds moving through the corridor.
Reduced small-particle air pollution by 35% from 74 to 48 micrograms per cubic meter. Before the restoration, residents of the area were more than twice as likely to suffer from respiratory disease as those in other parts of the city.
Contributed to 15.1% increase in bus ridership and 3.3% in subway ridership in Seoul between 2003 and the end of 2008.
Increased the price of land by 30-50% for properties within 50 meters of the restoration project. This is double the rate of property increases in other areas of Seoul.
Increased number of businesses by 3.5% in Cheonggyecheon area during 2002-2003, which was double the rate of business growth in downtown Seoul; increased the number of working people in the Cheonggyecheon area by 0.8%, versus a decrease in downtown Seoul of 2.6%.
Attracts an average of 64,000 visitors daily. Of those, 1,408 are foreign tourists who contribute up to 2.1 billion won ($1.9 million USD) in visitor spending to the Seoul economy.

Next time you visit downtown Seoul, Korea, make sure you pay a visit to Cheonggyecheon Stream.
You won’t have to look hard to find it, as this lovely waterway runs through just over 6 miles of Seoul. The stream has quite a history; it existed centuries ago during the Joseon Dynasty, but was concealed by infrastructure in the 1950s. In 2003, as part of Seoul’s ongoing beautification and upgrade efforts, the freeway that concealed the Cheonggyecheon Stream was removed.
Today, no matter what part of Seoul you tour, Cheonggyecheon Stream and the unique, burbling sound the rushing water makes is sure to play a part. The city has created several parks where you can sit and enjoy a picnic next to the stream; additionally, it passes under more than 20 bridges as it moves through the many skyscrapers of modern Seoul. There are also numerous sculptures and other art installations scattered around Cheonggsecheon Stream, making the perfect backdrop for your photographs.
Don’t forget to cross over Gwantonggyo Bridge, a prominent fixture of Cheonggyecheon Stream sightseeing tours. This legendary bridge was constructed during the Joseon Dynasty, but was buried underground for decades as Korea sought to modernize itself. Thanks to a recent restoration, residents and visitors can once again cross this ancient structure.

As the capital of South Korea, Seoul blends futuristic skyscrapers with ancient cultural tradition. Together, these elements create a visit you’ll never forget.
The performing arts are very important to residents of Seoul, and you’ll find extraordinary renditions of song and dance, music, and martial arts just about anywhere you decide to go. Where else can you watch a ceremonial Changing of the Guard at Gyeongbokgung Palace to get a taste the city’s love of tradition and pageantry, and then follow it up with dancing the night away in one of Seoul’s many ultramodern nightclubs?
Are you always looking for that perfect purchase? So is Seoul. The people of this city love shopping; entire neighborhoods are dedicated to the art and craft of the perfect bargain. Scan the night market for that ultimate piece of traditional art, or wander into a high-end department store for that jacket you didn’t realize you needed. On that note, when shopping is near, so is food—intersperse your purchasing adventures with delicious Korean food wherever you go.
After hours of exploring the city itself, relax with a peaceful walk along the Cheonggyecheon Stream. This waterway runs through downtown Seoul and is dotted with parks and other public spaces for you to enjoy.

Seoul is one of the most dynamic cities in the world. I've been privileged enough to have lived in and around the Seoul metropolitan area for several years as an English teacher. It's a city that is near and dear to my heart and one which I strongly encourage you to visit. Below is my things to do in Seoul travel guide featuring all of the top attractions worth visiting:
1) Insadong is the cultural HUB of Seoul. It's an area that is equally as popular with locals as it is with tourists. Whether you're shopping for Korean souvenirs, people watching or wanting to grab some Korean street food, you'll find it all here.
2) Do fancy cats? For cat lovers (and the cats living there) a cat cafe is paradise. With an opportunity to interact with cats and feed them treats, you'll be sure to make a few feline friends in just one sitting. The deal with these cat cafes is that you have to purchase a prepaid drink and/or snack (at a price higher than a normal cafe) for the opportunity to pet and play with kitties. Our favorite cat cafe was located in Hongdae.
3) In the winter Korea is frigid in a way few from abroad might expect. To warm up head to a proper Korean Tea House where you'll be served a wonderful aromatic fruity Korean tea accompanied by rice cake snacks. To enjoy like a local find a spot with Ondol - heated floors. If you're looking for a recommendation, try the ginger tea!
4) For the best view in Seoul consider hiking up Mount Namsan to visit Seoul Tower. Best done in the spring or fall - given the moderate temperatures - this moderately challenging walk will take less than an hour to complete. We picked late fall to go when it was cooler outside and leaves were changing colors.
5) No trip to Seoul would be complete without visiting the oldest market in the city - Namdaemun market. Many come here to shop but I'm all about coming for Korean street food. With a plethora of stalls and no shortage of options it's best to arrive with an empty stomach. If you're having a hard time choosing I recommend Hotteok and Tteokbokki.
6) As if visiting a cat cafe wasn't enough there are also dog cafes in Seoul! Unlike the cat cafes, which are a bit more mellow, prepare for a high energy kind of environment in the dog cafe where the dogs are more active than the docile cats.
7) For the best walk in Seoul head down to the Cheonggyecheon stream in the heart of the city. Equally as fascinating during the summer as it is by winter, it takes on a totally different personality as the seasons change. If you're lucky you'll spot a traditional Korean performance or hear Korean music playing.
8) There are numerous palaces to consider visiting in Seoul but none is more impressive than Gyeongbokgung. With admission being only 3000 KRW it's a cheap and fun landmark to visit. Be sure to stick around for the changing of guard ceremony.

Things to do in Korea | Top Attractions Travel Guide
When coming up with a top attractions travel guide for South Korea it became a daunting task to go through my travel video library collection of Korean videos and decide which ones to use. There is just so much to see and do in Korea from food to culture and from attractions and cities worth visiting. From Seoul to Busan and from countryside to urban city centers there is something for everyone. The following recommendation for the top things to do in South Korea:
1) Visiting Insadong
Considered by many to the cultural hub of Seoul, Insadong is the perfect place to indulge in Korean street, go shopping and take in Korean traditional musical performances. It is also one of the best places for people watching as you'll notice a mix of both Koreans and foreigners.
2) Korean Folk Village
The Korean Folk Village, nestled in between the cities of Suwon and Yongin, is a place you'll definitely want to check out. While wandering around he scenic premises you can snack on Korean street food delights such as sugary taffy where you'll notice traditional Korean wedding ceremonies, tightrope walking and equestrian students and performances. The best time of year to come is in the fall or spring.
3) Cat Cafes
Although we've been to several cat cafes in Thailand, Malaysia and Germany we still haven't found one that tops the cat cafe we visited in Hongdae, Seoul, South Korea. Purchase an entrance ticket, which entitles you to a drink, allows you to come in and interact with the cats playing, feeding and petting them to your hearts content.
4) One of the most historic markets in all of Seoul - and Korea for that matter - is Namdaemun Market. As the largest and oldest open air market in all of Korea you'll have a chance to shop and eat Korean street food all day long. My favorite snack here is hotteok.
5) A scenic and peaceful way to experience the heart of downtown Seoul is to wander along the Cheonggyecheon. There are few places that are more attractive to go walking. When we visited in winter we noticed many ice sculptures.
6) To beat the heat in the winter, visit a traditional Korean tea house for a fragrant cup of hot fruity tea and a delicious plate of Korean rice cake snacks.
7) Not a fan of cats? Try visiting a dog cafe as an alternative. It's the same deal as the cat cafe in terms of purchasing overpriced drinks for the chance to play and interact with cute dogs and puppies.
8) Kimbap Restaurant
For excellent Korean rice rolls, known as kimbap, head to one of the ubiquitous locations for some excellent kimchi fried rice, mandu and Korean soups.
9) Bamboo Park
If you visit the city of Damyang, in the southern region of Korea, you'll be treated to the Damyang Bamboo Forest Park. A nice scenic escape from urban Korean life, these parks do sometimes get crowded.
10) Boseong Tea Fields and Plantation
Not far from the Bamboo Forest Park is the Boseong Tea Fields. Come climb up to the very top - it's quite the workout and enjoy a cup of green tea or green tea flavored ice cream upon returning to the bottom.
11) There are a plethora of fascinating palaces and temples to explore in Seoul. Our favorite, is Gyeongbokgung Palace where admission is only 3000 Won. Pose with Korean guards and stick around for the changing of the guard.
12) If you're ready to shop until you drop be sure to visit Myeongdong, one of the most popular shopping districts in all of Seoul. Here you'll find swanky boutique shops and plenty of restaurants.
13) For the art and hipster scene be sure to visit Hongdae, the most popular student hangout area for Koreans. From food to nightlife to shopping this place has it all for young 20 somethings.
14) An alternative to Itaewon is Songtan - located nearby an American Military base in the Pyeongtaek region. This is where you'll come to buy American goods and to eat International cuisine.
15) Seoul Tower offers amazing views of the city but I enjoyed climbing Namsan even more. The climb is free and it best enjoyed on a fall or spring afternoon when the weather is cool.

2 Cheonggyecheon River history and restoration
Provides flood protection for up to a 200-year flood event and can sustain a flow rate of 118mm/hr.
Increased overall biodiversity by 639% between the pre-restoration work in 2003 and the end of 2008 with the number of plant species increasing from 62 to 308, fish species from 4 to 25, bird species from 6 to 36, aquatic invertebrate species from 5 to 53, insect species from 15 to 192, mammals from 2 to 4, and amphibians from 4 to 8.

What was most fascinating to you as you walked along the Cheonggsecheon Stream?

What will you do in Seoul?
