When it comes to hiking in Seoul, Korea many are surprised to find out about Mount Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) where you have numerous hiking trails and trekking options to suit beginners, intermediate and advanced hikers. Bukhansan Mountain is over 78 kilometers wide and you can reach various hiking trails from different access points. We ended up choosing Dobongsan (도봉산) climbing up Uiam (우이암) path using. With your best bet is to the Seoul metro and/or bus to begin your hike. We ended up going on Line Number 1 to Dobongsan Station (도봉산역). Join us for our Seoul hike where we also eating traditional hiking Korean food such as haemul pajeon (해물파전), Hotteok (호떡) and makgeoli (막걸리).

Hiking in Seoul, Korea visiting Mount Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) Travel Video Transcript:
We're exploring a part of Seoul (서울) we've never been to before. We've never really been to the north of Seoul (서울) and we've never done a serious hike in Seoul so we're really excited to be going off to Bukhansan Mountain (북한산국립공원) today. Bukhansan (북한산). And we're going to reach it by metro right now. And our metro is here so let's run.
Alright, so we are transferring from line number two, the green line, to line number one, the blue line, and that is going to take us to our final stop. So let's do this.
Alright, so we have arrived at the station. This is Dobongsan (도봉산). And we're actually doing it the shortest loop we can find. I think it is supposed to take an hour and a half.
So what do we have to do before we can hike up the mountain? Um, we're going to get me some pancakes because I'm already grumpy and cold and dreading this so I need food to warm me up.
And what are those pancakes called? Hotteok (호떡). Hotteok (호떡). And they are filled with honey and cinnamon and they're going to be good.
We're just about to go up Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) and what is fascinating about this park here is that it is seventy eight kilometers wide and there is a number of different hiking paths.
Actually if you look over here you can see lots to choose from. Different paths and it shows you the kilometers and the distance it should take in terms of hours. How much time it should take. Yeah.
And so yeah there is a lot to choose from. We're doing an easy route today. Yes, and what does Bukhansan (북한산) mean? It means the mountain north of the Han River.
Last time I swear. So we were thinking of doing this one. Jaunbong (자운봉). But it turns out it is intermediate advanced with expert portions. Originally we were going to do Uiam (우이암) anyways.
Update from the hike. So something we didn't necessarily anticipate is how many cool Buddhist temples we'd be passing by.
So we only have two hundred more meters to go but these are likely going to be the steepest. Let's get at it.
And we're also seeing a lot of mountain kitties nearby temples and also just on random sections of the trail.
So what do you think? We're almost there. Oh man, we've been crawling like on our hands and knees to get up here. Like that last stretch was really rough. Yeah. But the views. Spectacular.
So we've finished the hike. Now we're down at ground level and we're starving. So we're going for the quintessential Korean meal that you always have when you hike. Which is pajeon (파전) haemul pajeon (해물파전) the seafood Korean pancake. So we're just waiting for that to be prepared.
And for dessert we're going in for. We had to get a little more food for the road so we got one more Hotteok (호떡) and this one is a lot different from the one I had in the morning.
Thoughts on the hike? Thoughts on the hike I thought it was a great hike I can see why they would label it as a beginners hike in terms of the actual path. Yeah. But in terms of the hike would you say a return trip it is about a three hour journey? It took us three hours. It took us about three hours. You're looking at more of a full day outing. Our time at Bukhansan was dramatic in my personal opinion. Everything from the views, to the heat to even the trip up and down the mountain. By the end of everything I was completely dead. I try to run regularly, but even that could not prepare me for the hike up this mountain. I have to say that was probably all because I was trying to maintain Kyle's pace! Which i for sure could not keep up with.

Through conventional hiking, Baegundae Peak (836.5m) is the highest point you can reach in Bukhansan National Park in Seoul, South Korea. We took the Bukhansanseong course, the most popular route to the peak in which we were blessed by beautiful, sunny weather with cool breezes. It's no easy climb, but the view is spectacular at the top, truly unforgettable and well worth it!

Hiking in South Korea has been on my bucketlist!! It's no joke hiking up a mountain. Although it looks pretty simple it took 2 hours to reach the top. It takes serious endurance!! WORTH IT.

Bukhansan
Bukhansan, or Bukhan Mountain, is a mountain on the northern periphery of Seoul, South Korea. There are three major peaks, Baegundae 836.5 meters (2,744 ft), Insubong 810.5 meters (2,659 ft), Mangyeongdae 787.0 meters (2,582.0 ft). Because of its height and the fact that it borders a considerable portion of the city, Bukhansan is a major landmark visible from most city districts. The name "Bukhansan" means "big mountain in the north", referring to the fact that it is the northern border of the city. During the Joseon era, the peaks marked the extreme northern boundary of Seoul.
Bukhansan is the highest mountain within Seoul city boundaries. Apart from Bukhansan, there are seven other mountains including Dobongsan and Suraksan that are over 600 meters high within the city.
Popular throughout the year, Bukhansan, and Bukhansan National Park, which was formed in 1983, are renowned for birdwatching, hiking and rockclimbing. Bukhansan attracts a large number of hikers; around 5 million per year.

National park
A national park is a park in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of 'wild nature' for posterity and as a symbol of national pride. An international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas.
While this type of national park had been proposed previously, the United States established the first "public park or pleasuring-ground for the benefit and enjoyment of the people", Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. Although Yellowstone was not officially termed a "national park" in its establishing law, it was always termed such in practice and is widely held to be the first and oldest national park in the world. The first area to use "national park" in its creation legislation was the US's Mackinac Island, in 1875. Australia's Royal National Park, established in 1879, was the world's third official national park. In 1895 ownership of Mackinac Island was transferred to the State of Michigan as a state park and national park status was consequently lost. As a result, Australia's Royal National Park is by some considerations the second oldest national park now in existence.

Bukhansan National Park
The Bukhansan National Park (Korean: 북한산국립공원, 北漢山國立公園) in Seoul and Gyeonggi covers an area of 79.92 km2 (30.86 sq mi) and was established on 2 April 1983. Bukhansan means "mountains north of the Han River."
The park contains forested areas, temples and granite peaks. The three main peaks are Baekundae, 836.5 m (2,744 ft), Insubong, 810.5 m (2,659 ft) and Mangnyeongdae, 799.5 m (2,623 ft). Due to its popularity with hikers and Seoul residents, some trails are closed on a rotation basis to protect the local environment.
The Bukhansanseong Fortress is located in the park, together with its 9.5 km (5.9 mi) long defensive wall. A fortress was first built on this site in 132 AD to protect Seoul from foreign invasions, and it was expanded to its current size in 1711. It was reconstructed after damage sustained in the Korean War. Despite its name, this mountain is in Seoul, South Korea, so this mountain should not be confused with North Korea (also referred to as 북한, bukhan).

Bukhansan Mountain is over 78 kilometers wide and you can reach various hiking trails from different access points. We ended up choosing Dobongsan (도봉산) climbing up Uiam (우이암) path using. We're exploring a part of Seoul (서울) we've never been to before. We've never really been to the north of Seoul (서울) and we've never done a serious hike in Seoul so we're really excited to be going off to Bukhansan Mountain (북한산국립공원) today. Bukhansan (북한산). And we're going to reach it by metro right now. And our metro is here so let's run.
Alright, so we are transferring from line number two, the green line, to line number one, the blue line, and that is going to take us to our final stop. So let's do this.
Alright, so we have arrived at the station. This is Dobongsan (도봉산). And we're actually doing it the shortest loop we can find. I think it is supposed to take an hour and a half.
So what do we have to do before we can hike up the mountain? Um, we're going to get me some pancakes because I'm already grumpy and cold and dreading this so I need food to warm me up.
And what are those pancakes called? Hotteok (호떡). Hotteok (호떡). And they are filled with honey and cinnamon and they're going to be good.
We're just about to go up Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) and what is fascinating about this park here is that it is seventy eight kilometers wide and there is a number of different hiking paths.
Actually if you look over here you can see lots to choose from. Different paths and it shows you the kilometers and the distance it should take in terms of hours. How much time it should take. Yeah.
And so yeah there is a lot to choose from. We're doing an easy route today. Yes, and what does Bukhansan (북한산) mean? It means the mountain north of the Han River.
Last time I swear. So we were thinking of doing this one. Jaunbong (자운봉). But it turns out it is intermediate advanced with expert portions. Originally we were going to do Uiam (우이암) anyways.
Update from the hike. So something we didn't necessarily anticipate is how many cool Buddhist temples we'd be passing by.
So we only have two hundred more meters to go but these are likely going to be the steepest. Let's get at it.
And we're also seeing a lot of mountain kitties nearby temples and also just on random sections of the trail.
So what do you think? We're almost there. Oh man, we've been crawling like on our hands and knees to get up here. Like that last stretch was really rough. Yeah. But the views. Spectacular.
So we've finished the hike. Now we're down at ground level and we're starving. So we're going for the quintessential Korean meal that you always have when you hike. Which is pajeon (파전) haemul pajeon (해물파전) the seafood Korean pancake. So we're just waiting for that to be prepared.
And for dessert we're going in for. We had to get a little more food for the road so we got one more Hotteok (호떡) and this one is a lot different from the one I had in the morning.
Thoughts on the hike? Thoughts on the hike I thought it was a great hike I can see why they would label it as a beginners hike in terms of the actual path. Yeah. But in terms of the hike would you say a return trip it is about a three hour journey? It took us three hours. It took us about three hours. You're looking at more of a full day outing. It's no easy climb, but the view is spectacular at the top, truly unforgettable and well worth it!

When it comes to hiking in Seoul, Korea many are surprised to find out about Mount Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) where you have numerous hiking trails and trekking options to suit beginners, intermediate and advanced hikers. Bukhansan Mountain is over 78 kilometers wide and you can reach various hiking trails from different access points. We ended up choosing Dobongsan (도봉산) climbing up Uiam (우이암) path using. Hiking Bukhansan National Park 북한산국립공원
My best friend Josh and I hiked one of the most popular mountains and national parks in Korea. Bukhansan National Park attracts around 5 million visitors each year. But please be careful because the routes can be slippery and dangerous, however, the view is spectacular and worth it! If I remember correctly, the whole journey took us nearly 8 hours to complete so be prepared emotionally and physically to endure some pain. I will include a link to the official website. Hiking in Seoul, Korea visiting Mount Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) Travel Video Transcript:
We're exploring a part of Seoul (서울) we've never been to before. We've never really been to the north of Seoul (서울) and we've never done a serious hike in Seoul so we're really excited to be going off to Bukhansan Mountain (북한산국립공원) today. Bukhansan (북한산). And we're going to reach it by metro right now. And our metro is here so let's run.
Alright, so we are transferring from line number two, the green line, to line number one, the blue line, and that is going to take us to our final stop. So let's do this.
Alright, so we have arrived at the station. This is Dobongsan (도봉산). And we're actually doing it the shortest loop we can find. I think it is supposed to take an hour and a half.
So what do we have to do before we can hike up the mountain? Um, we're going to get me some pancakes because I'm already grumpy and cold and dreading this so I need food to warm me up.
And what are those pancakes called? Hotteok (호떡). Hotteok (호떡). And they are filled with honey and cinnamon and they're going to be good.
We're just about to go up Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) and what is fascinating about this park here is that it is seventy eight kilometers wide and there is a number of different hiking paths.
Actually if you look over here you can see lots to choose from. Different paths and it shows you the kilometers and the distance it should take in terms of hours. How much time it should take. Yeah.
And so yeah there is a lot to choose from. We're doing an easy route today. Yes, and what does Bukhansan (북한산) mean? It means the mountain north of the Han River.
Last time I swear. So we were thinking of doing this one. Jaunbong (자운봉). But it turns out it is intermediate advanced with expert portions. Originally we were going to do Uiam (우이암) anyways.
Update from the hike. So something we didn't necessarily anticipate is how many cool Buddhist temples we'd be passing by.
So we only have two hundred more meters to go but these are likely going to be the steepest. Let's get at it.
And we're also seeing a lot of mountain kitties nearby temples and also just on random sections of the trail.
So what do you think? We're almost there. Oh man, we've been crawling like on our hands and knees to get up here. Like that last stretch was really rough. Yeah. But the views. Spectacular.
So we've finished the hike. Now we're down at ground level and we're starving. So we're going for the quintessential Korean meal that you always have when you hike. Which is pajeon (파전) haemul pajeon (해물파전) the seafood Korean pancake. So we're just waiting for that to be prepared.
And for dessert we're going in for. We had to get a little more food for the road so we got one more Hotteok (호떡) and this one is a lot different from the one I had in the morning.
Thoughts on the hike? Thoughts on the hike I thought it was a great hike I can see why they would label it as a beginners hike in terms of the actual path. Yeah. But in terms of the hike would you say a return trip it is about a three hour journey? It took us three hours. It took us about three hours. You're looking at more of a full day outing. Hiking in Seoul, Korea visiting Mount Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) Travel Video Transcript:
We're exploring a part of Seoul (서울) we've never been to before. We've never really been to the north of Seoul (서울) and we've never done a serious hike in Seoul so we're really excited to be going off to Bukhansan Mountain (북한산국립공원) today. Bukhansan (북한산). And we're going to reach it by metro right now. And our metro is here so let's run.
Alright, so we are transferring from line number two, the green line, to line number one, the blue line, and that is going to take us to our final stop. So let's do this.
Alright, so we have arrived at the station. This is Dobongsan (도봉산). And we're actually doing it the shortest loop we can find. I think it is supposed to take an hour and a half.
So what do we have to do before we can hike up the mountain? Um, we're going to get me some pancakes because I'm already grumpy and cold and dreading this so I need food to warm me up.
And what are those pancakes called? Hotteok (호떡). Hotteok (호떡). And they are filled with honey and cinnamon and they're going to be good.
We're just about to go up Bukhansan National Park (북한산국립공원) and what is fascinating about this park here is that it is seventy eight kilometers wide and there is a number of different hiking paths.
Actually if you look over here you can see lots to choose from. Different paths and it shows you the kilometers and the distance it should take in terms of hours. How much time it should take. Yeah.
And so yeah there is a lot to choose from. We're doing an easy route today. Yes, and what does Bukhansan (북한산) mean? It means the mountain north of the Han River.
Last time I swear. So we were thinking of doing this one. Jaunbong (자운봉). But it turns out it is intermediate advanced with expert portions. Originally we were going to do Uiam (우이암) anyways.
Update from the hike. So something we didn't necessarily anticipate is how many cool Buddhist temples we'd be passing by.
So we only have two hundred more meters to go but these are likely going to be the steepest. Let's get at it.
And we're also seeing a lot of mountain kitties nearby temples and also just on random sections of the trail.
So what do you think? We're almost there. Oh man, we've been crawling like on our hands and knees to get up here. Like that last stretch was really rough. Yeah. But the views. Spectacular.
So we've finished the hike. Now we're down at ground level and we're starving. So we're going for the quintessential Korean meal that you always have when you hike. Which is pajeon (파전) haemul pajeon (해물파전) the seafood Korean pancake. So we're just waiting for that to be prepared.
And for dessert we're going in for. We had to get a little more food for the road so we got one more Hotteok (호떡) and this one is a lot different from the one I had in the morning.
Thoughts on the hike? Thoughts on the hike I thought it was a great hike I can see why they would label it as a beginners hike in terms of the actual path. Yeah. But in terms of the hike would you say a return trip it is about a three hour journey? It took us three hours. It took us about three hours. You're looking at more of a full day outing. My best friend Josh and I hiked one of the most popular mountains and national parks in Korea. Bukhansan National Park attracts around 5 million visitors each year. But please be careful because the routes can be slippery and dangerous, however, the view is spectacular and worth it! If I remember correctly, the whole journey took us nearly 8 hours to complete so be prepared emotionally and physically to endure some pain. I will include a link to the official website.
