In mechanical or automotive engineering, a freewheel or overrunning clutch is a device in a transmission that disengages the driveshaft from the driven shaft when the driven shaft rotates faster than the driveshaft. An overdrive is sometimes mistakenly called a freewheel, but is otherwise unrelated.
The condition of a driven shaft spinning faster than its driveshaft exists in most bicycles when the rider holds his or her feet still, no longer pushing the pedals. In a fixed-gear bicycle, without a freewheel, the rear wheel would drive the pedals around.
An analogous condition exists in an automobile with a manual transmission going down hill or any situation where the driver takes his or her foot off the gas pedal, closing the throttle; the wheels want to drive the engine, possibly at a higher RPM. In a two-stroke engine this can be a catastrophic situation: as many two stroke engines depend on a fuel/oil mixture for lubrication, a shortage of fuel to the engine would result in a shortage of oil in the cylinders, and the pistons would seize after a very short time causing extensive engine damage. Saab used a freewheel system in their two-stroke models for this reason and maintained it in the Saab 96 V4 and early Saab 99 for better fuel efficiency.

Duke Special (born Peter Wilson) is a songwriter and performer based in Belfast, Northern Ireland. A piano-based songwriter with a romantic style and a warm, distinctly accented voice, he has distinctive long dreadlocks, eyeliner and outfits he describes as "hobo chic". His live performances have a theatrical style inspired by Vaudeville and music hall, and often incorporate 78s played on an old-fashioned gramophone, or sound effects from a transistor radio. He is most often accompanied by percussionist "Temperance Society" Chip Bailey, who plays cheese graters and egg whisks, a Stumpf fiddle and a Shruti box, as well as the more typical drums and cymbals. Other musicians who perform with Wilson from time to time include Paul Pilot (guitar), Réa Curran (trumpet, backing vocals, accordion), Ben Castle (clarinet, saxophone), Ben Hales (bass guitar), Gareth Williams, "Professor" Ger Eaton (keyboards), Dan Donnelly (mandoline, backing vocals) and Serge Archibald III (saxophone, "ethereal background sounds", vibes).

I show how to disassemble and re-assemble a freewheel from a bike wheel. I also clean and lube the freewheel parts. I didn't replace the bearings. I just cleaned them and reused them. But if they show wear or damage, they are not too expensive to replace. The bearings in this freewheel were 1/8" bearings. I think that is the most common size in freewheels. I lubed the parts with marine grease. I show close up the differences between freewheels and cassettes. I also show how they mount to the wheel. Hopefully this will help people identify whether they have a cassette or a freewheel. Freewheels usually have 5 - 7 cogs and screw on to the hub. Modern cassettes (like Shimano Hyperglide) usually have 7 - 11 cogs and are held onto a ratcheting freehub body with a lock ring. There was an older Shimano cassette called Uniglide that was held on the freehub body with the smallest cog acting as the lock ring. Uniglide cassettes are not very common anymore. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. Have you ever wondered what the inside of a bike free wheel looks like? What is inside of one? How they work? I take an old freewheel apart and show you the parts that are inside and talk about how it works. The freewheel is a 6 speed Shimano, but they all pretty much the same. If your freewheel is not working well, try cleaning and lubing it before taking it apart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lVc1r2giqPc Check out my video on Freewheel Disassembly/Assembly where I show not only how to take it apart, but how to put it together again: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T_vRbBRPr3c **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -T-Shirts: https://www.amazon.com/gp/search?keywords=%22rj+the+bike+guy%22&tag;=youtube25-20 -Website: http://www...
I show how to replace the freewheel on a bicycle wheel. I replace a worn Sachs freewheel with a new Shimano freewheel. This is the Park Tool FR-1 tool that I used in the video. It's actually the one I use most often. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B001B6RGXG/ref=nosim/youtube25-20 But depending on what freewheels you are dealing with, you may need a different tool. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy

Using an old dirty freewheel, I show how to degrease, clean, and lubricate a freewheel for a bike. This wheel was in my garage, and I can't remember what it came from. But it was pretty dirty. So I figured it would make a good example for how to clean a freewheel. I use WD-40 to clean out the insides, but many people use other things such as penetrating oil, Tri-Flow, Kerosene, Mineral Spirits, or even degreaser. But I have used WD-40 in the past, and not had issues with it. I used Phil Tenacious Oil to lube the freewheel. My manuals just says use a "medium weight oil" with no definition of what that is. Some people use motor oil. I have even seen a neat tool that allows you to pump a light grease into the freewheel. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" an...

Some viewers have asked how to make a freewheel make a louder clicking/ticking noise. I show how to do it by flushing out the lubrication and replacing it with a thinner oil. This will shorten the life of the freewheel and make it wear out faster. Fortunately, the bearings in the freewheel aren't under the same stress as the hub/axle bearings. The bearings in the freewheel only roll while coasting/freewheeling. But the pawls will be slamming down harder, which is where the louder noise comes from. That causes them to wear faster and possibly even break. So it you value a noisy freewheel over longevity, here you go. BTW, I am no way recommending anyone do this. Personally, I would rather lube the freewheel with Phil Tenacious Oil and have it be quieter and long lasting. **If the video was ...
Today I'm gonna show you what is the difference between a freewheel and a cassette. You can also see the hub differences. This video can help you in what do you need? A cassette or a freewheel. It depends on your hub type. You have to know your frame capacity to be able to choose the correct freewheel. Also you have to know the width of your freehub to install the right speed cassette on it. ---------- - The freewheel is a low end Falcon 7 spd that I took off from a bike earlier. - The cassette is a Shimano M770 XT 9 spd. If you have any question just feel free to ask me. How to convert a bike from a 6 speed freewheel to a 7 speed freewheel. This is a vintage Lotus road bike (made in Japan). It was a 12 speed (2x6). I converted it to be a 14 speed bike (2x7). I upgraded it with a 7 speed freewheel and 7 speed SIS downtube shifters. The rear derailleur was already SIS compatible. And the chain had been recently replaced, and it was 7 speed speed compatible. This is a pretty easy upgrade. **If the video was useful or interesting please give it a "thumbs up" and consider subscribing. -Website: http://www.RJTheBikeGuy.com -Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RJTheBikeGuy -Subscribe Here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=shyflirt1 -YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/RJTheBikeGuy
This is a video showing the build process of my freewheel crankset with triple chainrings. I started with a normal crankset and then cut off the mounting brackets and used them with my build. The crankset had removable chainrings which are much easier to work with when compared to ones with rivots. I am using a big 56 tooth drive sprocket as an adapter to fit both the freewheel and the 4 bolt pattern chainrings. I am using a heavy duty freewheel from Sick Bike Parts. My hope is that this video will give you ideas on how to build your own. The freewheel cranks themselves were purchased from www.thatsdax.com by clicking on the 'Shift Kit' link. On that page there is also a freewheel, but I am instead using the heavy duty one from Sick Bike Parts.
Which do you ride? Fixed Gear or freewheel? Well, with a flip-flop hub you don't have to choose. In this episode of Pure Fix TV Amanda explores the goodness that is the flip-flop hub. All Pure Fix Original Series bikes come with a flip-flop hub so no matter how you ride, fixie or freewheel, we got you covered. FIXED: Fixed-gear. The dream. A direct connection between the pedals and the rear wheel. Pure bliss. If that’s what you’re into. With a fixed-gear set-up, the cog on the rear wheel is fixed in place by a lockring, so if the wheel is spinning, so is the cog. And because that cog is connected to the pedals via the chain, if your rear wheel is moving, your pedals are moving too. That relationship between the pedals and the rear wheel has two big impacts. First, no coasting. That’...
How to remove and install a freewheel, pretty self explanatory. I had to do this to replace a spoke on my wheel, so its not like I just remove and install my freewheel for fun, just saying... well only when I'm really bored.

My own freewheel lies on the bottom of a pool
Spokes still spinning; it's a real vibration
I heal dancing with my foam reflection
My dead end deal lies on the dark floor of a cave
Arms are folded over my vapor pages
I kneel; bowing to my cryptic sages
I don't believe in love anymore
My white boy feel dies on an endless Saturday
Sticks are flying over constellation
