La Reserva de Sian Ka'an (en maya significa "puerta del cielo’‘ o "lugar donde empieza el cielo’) es un espacio natural protegido que se localiza en la costa caribeña del estado de Quintana Roo, México. Fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el año 1987.
nosotros llegamos hasta ahí manejando de tulum a muyil, y de ahí nos desviamos en los manglares hasta la laguna, es mas fácil que tomar la ruta de los hoteles ecológicos.
hay dos tipos de tours en esta ocasión nosotros elegimos el de $400 pesos el cual incluye una visita a las lagunas, conocer el sitio arqueológico y flotar en el rio natural, la otra opción es rentar una lancha en $2000 pesos pero puedes juntar un grupo de 6 y sale mas económico y te llevan a mas lugares como punta allen, boca paila etc.
sin duda este es un sitio para recordar y seguir visitando, es 100% natural y se siente una atmósfera de tranquilidad como en ningún otro lado.
mis recomendaciones son visitar sian ka'an en la mañana, llevar bloqueador biodegradable, un sombrero para el sol, la cámara fotográfica y relajarte disfrutando del paisaje en el rio natural.

Sian Ka'an is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
With the participation of scientists, technicians, students, fishermen, farmers, rural promotors and administrators, together with regional and international partners, have successfully carried out more than 200 conservation projects basing all conservation actions on scientific and technical information for planning and implementing environmental policies and the proposal of viable solutions for sustainable use of natural resources and focusing their efforts established within eight protected natural areas that include the reefs of Banco Chinchorro, and Xcalak at South of Quintana Roo, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Cancun, the island of Cozumel that is located in front of Xcaret and Contoy Island up North, covering 780,000 acres (3,200 km2). These areas lie in parts of all seven Caribbean Sea coastal municipalities of the state, with the largest part being in eastern Felipe Carrillo Puerto Municipality, where the vast majority of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve lies. In the language of the Mayan peoples who once inhabited this region, Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'. Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef.
There are an estimated 1,200 plant species found in Sian Ka'an.
As regards the Sian Ka'an fauna, a total of 103 species of mammal has been recorded including five species of cat - jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarondi. Other mammals include Central American tapir, Caribbean manatee, spider monkey, howler monkey, kinkajou, white-tailed deer, red brocket, white-lipped peccary, paca, tayra and collared anteater. Some 339 bird species have also been recorded, with about two-thirds breeding inside the reserve. Due to the great diversity of aquatic habitats, marine and wading birds are well represented. There are 16 raptor species, as well as frigate bird, cormorant, roseate spoonbill, greater flamingo and jabirus; and 42 species of amphibian and reptile have been recorded. These include four of the six turtle species found along the Mexican coast; green, hawksbill, loggerhead and leatherback. Morelet's crocodile and American crocodile also occur. Fish are abundant, and over 52 species have been recorded. A total of 550 terrestrial and 843 aquatic invertebrate species have been observed.
There are 23 Mayan sites in the reserve, while the Chunyaxché ruins, Vigia Del Lago and Xamach, are just to the north. Recently, a 24 km Mayan artificial canal was discovered. The reserve is located in the least-developed part of Quintana Roo, and the population is predominantly of Mayan origin, in whose language Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'.

Quintana Roo
Quintana Roo (Spanish pronunciation: [kinˈtana ˈro]), officially Free and Sovereign State of Quintana Roo (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Quintana Roo), is one of the 31 states which, with the Federal District, make up the 32 federal entities of Mexico. It is divided into ten municipalities and its capital city is Chetumal.
It is located in Southeastern Mexico, on the eastern part of the Yucatán Peninsula. It is bordered by the states of Campeche to the west and Yucatán to the northwest, and by the Orange Walk and Corozal districts of Belize, along with an offshore borderline with Belize District to the south. Quintana Roo has a coastline to the east with the Caribbean Sea and to the north with the Gulf of Mexico. It also claims territory which gives it a small border with Guatemala in the southwest of the state, although this disputed area is also claimed by Campeche.
Quintana Roo is the home of the city of Cancún, the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, and the towns of Bacalar, Playa del Carmen and Akumal, as well as the ancient Maya ruins of Chacchoben, Cobá, Kohunlich, Muyil, Tulum, Xel-Há, and Xcaret. The Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve is also located in the state.

Launched in 1971, UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an Intergovernmental Scientific Programme that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.
MAB’s work engages fully with the international development agenda –specially with the Sustainable Development Goals and the Post 2015 Development Agenda– and addresses challenges linked to scientific, environmental, societal and development issues in diverse ecosystems; from mountain regions to marine, coastal and island areas; from tropical forests to drylands and urban areas. MAB combines the natural and social sciences, economics and education to improve human livelihoods and the equitable sharing of benefits, and to safeguard natural and managed ecosystems, thus promoting innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate, and environmentally sustainable.
The MAB programme provides a unique platform for cooperation on research and development, capacity-building and networking to share information, knowledge and experience on three interlinked issues: biodiversity loss, climate change and sustainable development. It contributes not only to better understanding of the environment, but also promotes greater involvement of science and scientists in policy development concerning the wise use of biological diversity.

Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. There are an estimated 1,200 plant species found in Sian Ka'an. As regards the Sian Ka'an fauna, a total of 103 species of mammal has been recorded including five species of cat - jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarondi. La Reserva de Sian Ka'an (en maya significa "puerta del cielo’‘ o "lugar donde empieza el cielo’) es un espacio natural protegido que se localiza en la costa caribeña del estado de Quintana Roo, México. Fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el año 1987.
nosotros llegamos hasta ahí manejando de tulum a muyil, y de ahí nos desviamos en los manglares hasta la laguna, es mas fácil que tomar la ruta de los hoteles ecológicos.
hay dos tipos de tours en esta ocasión nosotros elegimos el de $400 pesos el cual incluye una visita a las lagunas, conocer el sitio arqueológico y flotar en el rio natural, la otra opción es rentar una lancha en $2000 pesos pero puedes juntar un grupo de 6 y sale mas económico y te llevan a mas lugares como punta allen, boca paila etc.
sin duda este es un sitio para recordar y seguir visitando, es 100% natural y se siente una atmósfera de tranquilidad como en ningún otro lado.
mis recomendaciones son visitar sian ka'an en la mañana, llevar bloqueador biodegradable, un sombrero para el sol, la cámara fotográfica y relajarte disfrutando del paisaje en el rio natural.

With the participation of scientists, technicians, students, fishermen, farmers, rural promotors and administrators, together with regional and international partners, have successfully carried out more than 200 conservation projects basing all conservation actions on scientific and technical information for planning and implementing environmental policies and the proposal of viable solutions for sustainable use of natural resources and focusing their efforts established within eight protected natural areas that include the reefs of Banco Chinchorro, and Xcalak at South of Quintana Roo, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Cancun, the island of Cozumel that is located in front of Xcaret and Contoy Island up North, covering 780,000 acres (3,200 km2). These areas lie in parts of all seven Caribbean Sea coastal municipalities of the state, with the largest part being in eastern Felipe Carrillo Puerto Municipality, where the vast majority of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve lies. There are 16 raptor species, as well as frigate bird, cormorant, roseate spoonbill, greater flamingo and jabirus; and 42 species of amphibian and reptile have been recorded. These include four of the six turtle species found along the Mexican coast; green, hawksbill, loggerhead and leatherback. Morelet's crocodile and American crocodile also occur. Fish are abundant, and over 52 species have been recorded. A total of 550 terrestrial and 843 aquatic invertebrate species have been observed.
There are 23 Mayan sites in the reserve, while the Chunyaxché ruins, Vigia Del Lago and Xamach, are just to the north. Recently, a 24 km Mayan artificial canal was discovered. The reserve is located in the least-developed part of Quintana Roo, and the population is predominantly of Mayan origin, in whose language Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'.

Sian Ka'an - Our dolphin adventure 2015
During our 4th consecutive years vacation to the Yucatan (Tulum, Akumal), we decided to take a little different excursion than the kinds we have taken in the past. We decided to take a tour of the world renown SIAN KA'AN BIOSPHERE RESERVE. We used a less commercial tour company where for an even better price, got a private boat and guide for our 12hr adventure by sea! IT WAS A FANTASTIC, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, FOREVER MEMORABLE trip we will never forget! We started at a dock in Tulum then went aboard a shared boat with another tour company, then in km's from shore in the Caribbean we hopped on to another boat with our private guide, Francesco!! Sian Ka'an is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
With the participation of scientists, technicians, students, fishermen, farmers, rural promotors and administrators, together with regional and international partners, have successfully carried out more than 200 conservation projects basing all conservation actions on scientific and technical information for planning and implementing environmental policies and the proposal of viable solutions for sustainable use of natural resources and focusing their efforts established within eight protected natural areas that include the reefs of Banco Chinchorro, and Xcalak at South of Quintana Roo, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Cancun, the island of Cozumel that is located in front of Xcaret and Contoy Island up North, covering 780,000 acres (3,200 km2). nosotros llegamos hasta ahí manejando de tulum a muyil, y de ahí nos desviamos en los manglares hasta la laguna, es mas fácil que tomar la ruta de los hoteles ecológicos.
hay dos tipos de tours en esta ocasión nosotros elegimos el de $400 pesos el cual incluye una visita a las lagunas, conocer el sitio arqueológico y flotar en el rio natural, la otra opción es rentar una lancha en $2000 pesos pero puedes juntar un grupo de 6 y sale mas económico y te llevan a mas lugares como punta allen, boca paila etc.
sin duda este es un sitio para recordar y seguir visitando, es 100% natural y se siente una atmósfera de tranquilidad como en ningún otro lado.
mis recomendaciones son visitar sian ka'an en la mañana, llevar bloqueador biodegradable, un sombrero para el sol, la cámara fotográfica y relajarte disfrutando del paisaje en el rio natural.

During our 4th consecutive years vacation to the Yucatan (Tulum, Akumal), we decided to take a little different excursion than the kinds we have taken in the past. We decided to take a tour of the world renown SIAN KA'AN BIOSPHERE RESERVE. We used a less commercial tour company where for an even better price, got a private boat and guide for our 12hr adventure by sea! IT WAS A FANTASTIC, ONCE IN A LIFETIME, FOREVER MEMORABLE trip we will never forget!
We started at a dock in Tulum then went aboard a shared boat with another tour company, then in km's from shore in the Caribbean we hopped on to another boat with our private guide, Francesco!! He was a life long fisherman from Punta Allen, a Mayan and quickly a new friend.
We speed along the Caribbean for just about 2 hrs until we were well inside the reserve. We saw all kinds of fish, tons of turtles of every size, we went through and learned about the Mangroves and all the life in them, we say a Mayan ruin, we stopped for a lunch at the Biosphere cottage, we saw a bird island sanctuary (beautiful and NOISY!). We saw crocodiles and Francesco even offered to take us to his home on the small island of Punta Allen, to which we readily accepted! We walked the island and drank freshly picked coconut water from the shell, we visited a restaurant and chatted with the friendly locals. It was BEAUTIFUL. We then went and swam in 'the natural swimming pool'. We jumped out of the boat on to this is a sand 'island' a ways off the coastline that was pristine white sand and only about 4ft deep, no rocks, hardly a breeze, just warm blue Caribbean water and palm trees swaying in the background. STUNNING.
We then went to a cenote in the middle of Ascension Bay where we saw Manate and more turtles. and then snorkeling in the most amazingly beautiful reef I've ever seen! Then the prize of the day.... in the middle of 'nowhere' dolphins surrounded the boat and gave us the best natural show we could have hoped for... with the exception of the 3 other boats of tourists who came literally out of nowhere and so close to us I was once afraid we would hit each other....I was SO IMPRESSED that no one 'rushed' the dolphins, they were left to 'do their thing' and how mind blowing it was to see that 'their thing' just happened to be SPENDING TIME WITH US, they ALL gave us quite a show, for at least a half hr they jumped and looked so happy! They swam up so close to us we could see every feature, there was NO FEAR .. it was like they actually ENJOYED having visitors lol. NEVER AGAIN WILL I GO TO SEE A DOLPHIN IN CAPTIVITY AND SUPPORT THEM KEEPING THEM IN POOLS FOR OUR ENTERTAINMENT!! After seeing how they naturally came to see us, WILD.. in THEIR OWN habitat. I made up my mind THIS is where they belong and if I want to see them, well I guess I will have to take a tour like this b.c THIS IS RESPECTFUL ... THIS IS KIND... THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE. It changed the way I looked at a lot of things.. Anyway, it was A PERFECT encounter! a GREAT BLESSING and way to end our day....well that is almost end it - After another 2 hr boat ride back to Tulum lol.
I HIGHLY recommend taking this tour! I was a little hesitant to recommend it and talked that over with Francesco, I was worried all the tourism would ruin their habitat b.c I am not the most trusting of my human species when it comes to respecting animals and this earth. He assured me these guides to their utmost to keep the tourists respectful of the reserve and explained to me the tourism dollars not only helps them to support their families, but it helps fund the reserve itself, teaching, research, medical aide to hurt animals etc... so I left feeling much better about it. Another wonderful thing I learned was many of these Mayan fisherman have been retrained to be biosphere protectors, teachers and conservationists!! HOW COOL IS THAT?!
If you are a nature nut, this is the tour and learning experience you won't soon, if ever forget. We won't!

Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef. There are an estimated 1,200 plant species found in Sian Ka'an. As regards the Sian Ka'an fauna, a total of 103 species of mammal has been recorded including five species of cat - jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarondi. nosotros llegamos hasta ahí manejando de tulum a muyil, y de ahí nos desviamos en los manglares hasta la laguna, es mas fácil que tomar la ruta de los hoteles ecológicos.
hay dos tipos de tours en esta ocasión nosotros elegimos el de $400 pesos el cual incluye una visita a las lagunas, conocer el sitio arqueológico y flotar en el rio natural, la otra opción es rentar una lancha en $2000 pesos pero puedes juntar un grupo de 6 y sale mas económico y te llevan a mas lugares como punta allen, boca paila etc.
sin duda este es un sitio para recordar y seguir visitando, es 100% natural y se siente una atmósfera de tranquilidad como en ningún otro lado.
mis recomendaciones son visitar sian ka'an en la mañana, llevar bloqueador biodegradable, un sombrero para el sol, la cámara fotográfica y relajarte disfrutando del paisaje en el rio natural.

Sian Ka'an is a biosphere reserve in the municipality of Tulum in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. It was established in 1986 and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.
With the participation of scientists, technicians, students, fishermen, farmers, rural promotors and administrators, together with regional and international partners, have successfully carried out more than 200 conservation projects basing all conservation actions on scientific and technical information for planning and implementing environmental policies and the proposal of viable solutions for sustainable use of natural resources and focusing their efforts established within eight protected natural areas that include the reefs of Banco Chinchorro, and Xcalak at South of Quintana Roo, Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, Cancun, the island of Cozumel that is located in front of Xcaret and Contoy Island up North, covering 780,000 acres (3,200 km2). These areas lie in parts of all seven Caribbean Sea coastal municipalities of the state, with the largest part being in eastern Felipe Carrillo Puerto Municipality, where the vast majority of Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve lies. In the language of the Mayan peoples who once inhabited this region, Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'. Located on the east coast of the Yucatán peninsula, this biosphere reserve contains tropical forests, mangroves and marshes, as well as a large marine section intersected by a barrier reef.
There are an estimated 1,200 plant species found in Sian Ka'an.
As regards the Sian Ka'an fauna, a total of 103 species of mammal has been recorded including five species of cat - jaguar, puma, ocelot, margay and jaguarondi. Other mammals include Central American tapir, Caribbean manatee, spider monkey, howler monkey, kinkajou, white-tailed deer, red brocket, white-lipped peccary, paca, tayra and collared anteater. Some 339 bird species have also been recorded, with about two-thirds breeding inside the reserve. Due to the great diversity of aquatic habitats, marine and wading birds are well represented. There are 16 raptor species, as well as frigate bird, cormorant, roseate spoonbill, greater flamingo and jabirus; and 42 species of amphibian and reptile have been recorded. These include four of the six turtle species found along the Mexican coast; green, hawksbill, loggerhead and leatherback. Morelet's crocodile and American crocodile also occur. Fish are abundant, and over 52 species have been recorded. A total of 550 terrestrial and 843 aquatic invertebrate species have been observed.
There are 23 Mayan sites in the reserve, while the Chunyaxché ruins, Vigia Del Lago and Xamach, are just to the north. Recently, a 24 km Mayan artificial canal was discovered. The reserve is located in the least-developed part of Quintana Roo, and the population is predominantly of Mayan origin, in whose language Sian Ka'an means 'Origin of the Sky'.

This is our 5th trip to Mexico - Playa Del Carmen - Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal. Because of the fire we stayed 1 night 12-10 at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya. It was big and more luxurious, but we missed the atmosphere of Iberostar Tucan Quetzal. The next day 12-11 we went to Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal. When we arrived, we were only the 6th guests. Iberostar Del mar and Iberostar Beach is pretty much the same resort, Lindo and Maya are pretty much on the same level as well, Maya is more expensive. Grant or Grand is the cream of the crop. Don't go with apple vacation, order directly through iberostar (Via phone or web site) will be 50% less than through apple vacation. Del mar /beach gets 2 stars, Lindo Maya gets about 3.5 stars, Grant is at around 4.5 out of 5.0 stars (the only negative thing about it is the beach you can't really swim at) and there is no shark nets and there is no wave breakers. En esta reserva hay selvas tropicales, bahías, cenotes, y la segunda barrera arrecifal más grande del planeta.
Parte de su riqueza natural son las tres mil 929 especies que la habitan, muchas de las cuales son endémicas. Entre ellas encontramos a toda la familia de felinos americanos --como el jaguar, actualmente en peligro de extinción--, e importantes sitios de anidación de tortugas marinas. Existen también 373 especies de aves, entre residentes y migratorias, de las cuales 70 son acuáticas.
Aquí también se concentra un gran número de ecosistemas de las zonas tropicales de todo el país, lo que la convierte en una mina de oro para los investigadores ya que, en un sólo espacio, obtienen una amplia información de los procesos ecológicos de México.
Debido a su privilegiada ubicación, es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de México, donde se ha promovido la educación ambiental a través de la observación de su flora y fauna.

Ubicada frente a las Costas del Mar Caribe, en los municipios de Felipe Carrillo Puerto y Solidaridad, la reserva de la biosfera de Sian Ka'an ('Origen del cielo' en lengua maya), posee uno de los ecosistemas de humedal más importantes de la región, el cual fue designado Patrimonio Mundial de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en 1987. Because of the fire we stayed 1 night 12-10 at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya. It was big and more luxurious, but we missed the atmosphere of Iberostar Tucan Quetzal.
The next day 12-11 we went to Iberostar Tucan & Quetzal. When we arrived, we were only the 6th guests. It was a incredible experience.

Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar Beach Lindo Maya and grant grand review riviera maya apple vacation mexico. Iberostar Del mar and Iberostar Beach is pretty much the same resort, Lindo and Maya are pretty much on the same level as well, Maya is more expensive. Grant or Grand is the cream of the crop. Don't go with apple vacation, order directly through iberostar (Via phone or web site) will be 50% less than through apple vacation. Del mar /beach gets 2 stars, Lindo Maya gets about 3.5 stars, Grant is at around 4.5 out of 5.0 stars (the only negative thing about it is the beach you can't really swim at) and there is no shark nets and there is no wave breakers. Del mar and beach and lindo and maya beach experience is about 3 out of 5 stars, not enough chairs at the beach, not enough shade area at the beach, you spend too much time looking for a shade and a chair in the morning. Food is ok, around 3 out of 5 stars for 4 resorts (Excluding grant). Service is about 2-3 stars out of 5, basically nobody cares. Sales pitches from concierge service. No mosquito nets in the rooms, AC don't work well. No AC at del mar / beach buffet areas. Mosquitos at del mar / beach. non heated swimming pools, stinky smelly swimming pools. Not for beach experience not for pool experience. Very good hotel for weddings. Better hotels are princess platinum, royalton and royalton hideaway, Grand Bahia principe (sian ka'an) (luxury, coba). Iberostar (besides grant) gets the lowest score of the above mentioned hotels. Apple vacations rips everybody off by advertising this place with more stars than it actually is. Apple vacation fills up this resort pretty well with idiots like me who buy into whole iberostar experience and apple vacation fluff ratings.
