Leon Czolgosz
Leon Frank Czolgosz ( \CHŌL-gōsh\ Polish form: Czołgosz,Polish pronunciation: [ˈt͡ʂɔwɡɔʂ]; May 5 1873 – October 29, 1901; also used surname "Nieman" ["Nobody"] and variations thereof) was an American anarchist and former steel worker responsible for the assassination of William McKinley, President of the United States, in 1901. Czolgosz was executed in the same year.
Early life
Czolgosz was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 5 1873, but the 1900 census gives his place of birth as Ohio. The 1880 U.S. Census of Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, enumeration district 007, page 31, shows Louis Chandgas to be the son of Paul and Mary Chandgas, b. ca. 1874 in Michigan. The census shows him as having six siblings. Paul and Mary were born in Poland. His three older brothers, Warren, Frank and Joseph, were born in Poland while Louis was born in Michigan. He was one of eight children of Paul Czolgosz and his wife Mary Nowak, Polish Catholic immigrants (although the 1900 census give their origin as "Germany" - as Poland did not exist in 1900).

His first term had seen rapid economic growth at home, and swift victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898, leading to a comfortable victory in the election of 1900. On 5 September 1901 McKinley visited the Pan-American Exposition where he spoke in favour of negotiating trade agreements with other countries to support the expansion of American industry. The next day, after visiting Niagara Falls, he returned to the Exposition where he was due to meet the public at the Temple of Music. The President’s personal secretary, George Cortelyou, tried to persuade him to cancel the event for the sake of his safety. ‘Why should I?’ McKinley replied. ‘Who would want to hurt me?’
Waiting in the crowd for the chance to shake hands with the President was American steelworker and anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Having experienced strikes and economic hardships that gradually made him more radical in his political beliefs, he reached the conclusion that social inequality in America persisted due to a corrupt government that allowed the exploitation of the poor.
Inside the Temple of Music, Czolgosz approached the President at 4:07pm. Armed with a revolver that he concealed under a handkerchief, he shot him twice in the abdomen at point blank range. He was soon taken to the Exposition’s hospital where a doctor operated on his wounds. The second bullet could not be located, but they were confident that the President would recover. Nevertheless he died less than a week later of gangrene brought on by his wounds.

President McKinley had begun his second term earlier that year, with Theodore Roosevelt as his vice president. His first term had seen rapid economic growth at home, and swift victory in the Spanish-American War of 1898, leading to a comfortable victory in the election of 1900.
On 5 September 1901 McKinley visited the Pan-American Exposition where he spoke in favour of negotiating trade agreements with other countries to support the expansion of American industry. The next day, after visiting Niagara Falls, he returned to the Exposition where he was due to meet the public at the Temple of Music. The President’s personal secretary, George Cortelyou, tried to persuade him to cancel the event for the sake of his safety. ‘Why should I?’ McKinley replied. ‘Who would want to hurt me?’
Waiting in the crowd for the chance to shake hands with the President was American steelworker and anarchist Leon Czolgosz. Having experienced strikes and economic hardships that gradually made him more radical in his political beliefs, he reached the conclusion that social inequality in America persisted due to a corrupt government that allowed the exploitation of the poor.
Inside the Temple of Music, Czolgosz approached the President at 4:07pm. Armed with a revolver that he concealed under a handkerchief, he shot him twice in the abdomen at point blank range. He was soon taken to the Exposition’s hospital where a doctor operated on his wounds. The second bullet could not be located, but they were confident that the President would recover. Nevertheless he died less than a week later of gangrene brought on by his wounds.

Throughout history there have been a number of American Presidents who have been assassinated, but one that isn't as well talked about is William McKinley the 25th President. McKinley's tenure was a prosperous one where the economy flourished, but he was killed by an anarchist being shot in front of a huge crowd. Leon Czolgosz was a recluse who hated the government, and he made a trip to Buffalo in New York where the President was due to speak. However he was armed with a pistol and the intention to kill the President.
As he shook hands with William McKinley, he slapped his hand to the side and Czolgosz fired two shots into the president before he was jumped on by guards. He was beaten badly, but it looked initially like the President would also survive, but 8 days later he succumbed to an infection caused by his wounds. But Leon Czolgosz was sentenced to death and he was executed by electric chair and was considered a dangerous man who's remains were then dissolved after death.

Leon Frank Czolgosz ( \CHŌL-gōsh\ Polish form: Czołgosz,Polish pronunciation: [ˈt͡ʂɔwɡɔʂ]; May 5 1873 – October 29, 1901; also used surname "Nieman" ["Nobody"] and variations thereof) was an American anarchist and former steel worker responsible for the assassination of William McKinley, President of the United States, in 1901. Czolgosz was executed in the same year.
Early life
Czolgosz was born in Detroit, Michigan, on May 5 1873, but the 1900 census gives his place of birth as Ohio. The 1880 U.S. Census of Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan, enumeration district 007, page 31, shows Louis Chandgas to be the son of Paul and Mary Chandgas, b. ca. 1874 in Michigan. The census shows him as having six siblings. Paul and Mary were born in Poland. His three older brothers, Warren, Frank and Joseph, were born in Poland while Louis was born in Michigan. He was one of eight children of Paul Czolgosz and his wife Mary Nowak, Polish Catholic immigrants (although the 1900 census give their origin as "Germany" - as Poland did not exist in 1900).
