"As the crisis brews over Syrian refugees trying to enter European countries, questions have been raised over why they are not heading to wealthy Gulf states closer to home.
Officially, Syrians can apply for a tourist visa or work permit in order to enter a Gulf state.
But the process is costly, and there is a widespread perception that many Gulf states have unwritten restrictions in place that make it hard for Syrians to be granted a visa in practice.”*

Grand Gulf State Park near Thayer, Missouri, consists of 322 acres (130 ha) encompassing a forked canyon that is the remnant of an ancient collapsed dolomite cave system. An uncollapsed part of the original cavern roof spans 200 feet (61 m), creating the largest natural bridge in Missouri. It was declared a National Natural Landmark in June 1971 for its excellent example of karst topography and underground stream piracy.
The Grand Gulf is nearly 1 mile (1.6 km) long and up to 130 feet (40 m) deep with sheer sides. A watershed of 26 square miles (67 km²) feeds into the gulf which itself drains into a cave entrance at its eastern end. Dye traces have shown that water entering the cave in Grand Gulf emerges 1 to 4 days later at Mammoth Spring in Arkansas, 9 miles (14 km) distant.

EVENT: In the Shadow of the Islamic Republic and the Islamic State
With the ink on the Iran nuclear deal barely dry, the political landscape in the Middle East is in flux. Seeking to counter Iran's new influence, the Gulf states are backing their sectarian allies in conflicts around the region. Meanwhile, non-state actors like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Islamic State threaten to thrust the Middle East into further chaos. As a result, the Palestinian-Israeli peace process has become an afterthought in Washington, not to mention other capitals around the world.

These days the peace and tranquility of Gulf State Park has been interrupted with the sounds of heavy equipment tearing through the underbrush and grinding up trees. It might sound extreme but it's all for a good cause.

Watch a timely conversation featuring Ghaith al-Omari and Jonathan Schanzer on these under-analyzed trends. The conversation will be moderated by FDD President Cliff May.

These days the peace and tranquility of Gulf State Park has been interrupted with the sounds of heavy equipment tearing through the underbrush and grinding up trees. It might sound extreme but it's all for a good cause.

Megan's journey begins in the oil fields of Kuwait, which were set alight and destroyed by the invading Iraqi army of 1990. The nation then celebrates Liberation Day and Megan joins in the festivities on the streets of Kuwait city.
Megan is then invited to stay with a Kuwaiti family who were camping in the desert, a tradition that many Kuwaitis hold dear, and samples some local dishes.
She then makes her way south, across the Arabian Gulf to the United Arab Emirates, where she explores the exciting cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The Gulf States and the Struggle for the ‘Post Arab Spring’
A seminar with Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, M.Phil PhD Fellow for the Middle East Rice University's Baker Institute
The rise of the Gulf States as assertive and even interventionist actors poses new challenges for policy-making in the Middle East and North Africa as the region emerges unsteadily from the Arab Spring. Chief among them is the growing evidence that Gulf officials are prepared to ‘go it alone’ and act unilaterally or, at best, as a loose regional bloc to secure their interests in transition states. Such actions raise questions for the broader international community of how to align Gulf States’ support in the short-term with moves

The rise of a virulent new form of terrorist threat, embodied in the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Shams (ISIS) has focused attention again on the security of the Persian Gulf Region. The ISIS phenomenon, however, cannot be decoupled from the broader politics of the region. With sectarian tensions high, the Iranian role in Iraq is coming under renewed scrutiny at the same time as Iran and the P5+1 are negotiating over its nuclear program. Energy prices are at multi-year lows, enhancing the leverage generated by robust sanctions, and increasing—if marginally—the chances for a comprehensive agreement. What will the security environment of the Gulf look like over the next year? What role can the US government play in the security architecture of the region, working with its allies to protect against both the terrorism threat and regional adversaries? And, perhaps most important, in a future scenario in which the P5+1 reaches a deal with Iran and sanctions are fully or partially lifted, will Iran be able to integrate itself into the security architecture of the region?
This event took place on March 2, 2015.

Globe Trekker- Arab Gulf States featuring Megan McCormick
Traveler Megan McCormick ventures into perhaps the most misunderstood region in the world - the Arab Gulf States.
Megan stays at the world famous Burj Al Arab hotel, a landmark of modern Dubai, before going abaya shopping in one of the city's many shopping malls.
In Abu Dhabi, she tees off at a unique desert golf course and meets one of the most flamboyant sheiks in Arabia, whose car collection includes a giant custom made Dodge pickup truck!
She travels across the border into Oman and discovers one of the hidden jewels of the Gulf. Immersing herself in the natural beauty, Megan finds herself irresistibly charmed by the country, as she goes swim-trekking in the Wadi Bani Khalid and cattle shopping in Nizwa.
Megan's adventure ends in the south of Oman, in the city of Salalah. She visits the mystical tomb of Job and finds the source of one of the treasures of the ancient world - frankincense.
Led by a Bedouin guide, she treks into the Empty Quarter, which is one million square miles of nothing but sand.

Fares Center: Sectarianism, Democracy and the Future of the Gulf States
The Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies hosted "Sectarianism, Democracy and the Future of the Gulf States" with Matar Ebrahim Ali Matar, Former Member of Parliament of Bahrain,
Notable figure in Pro-Democracy & Human Rights Activism during the 2011 protests in Bahrain, and Recipient of the Project on Middle East Democracy’s Leaders for Democracy Award (2012)
Matar Ebrahim Mater is a well-known political activist who served as Bahrain’s youngest-elected member of parliament, representing its largest constituency. In February 2012, along with eighteen members from his al-Wefaq political party, he resigned from parliament in protest of the Bahraini regime’s crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.
During the February 14 uprisings, he encouraged youth participation and informed the media and foreign officials of ongoing developments, actions that later made him a government target. Mr. Matar continues to speak out on behalf of the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain and has testified before the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission of the United States Congress.
The author of several articles and book chapters on prospects for democratic reform in Bahrain, Mr. Matar was awarded the Leaders of Democracy Award by the Project on Middle East.

Such actions raise questions for the broader international community of how to align Gulf States’ support in the short-term with moves toward sustainable development and political inclusiveness in the longer-run. Yet, the examples of post-Mubarak Egypt and Syria during the civil war suggest that Gulf power players are less inclined to listen to what they perceive as increasingly discredited Western-centric approaches that have, in their view, exacerbated instability in transition states since 2011.
This presentation examines why the Gulf States have aligned their growing capabilities (in the political, economic, and security arenas) with a far more expansive policy intent in which aid and assistance indelibly is linked to particular political currents rather than being tied to outcomes such as reforms to governance or improvements in transparency. It also documents the practical and policy implications for international stakeholders in engaging with a muscular Gulf across the Middle East and North Africa, and ends by considering what impact any sustained period of lower oil prices and revenues will have on the Gulf States’ regional policies.
Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, Ph.D., is the Baker Institute fellow for the Middle East. Working across the disciplines of political science, international relations and international political economy, his research examines the changing position of Persian Gulf states in the global order, as well as the emergence of longer-term, nonmilitary challenges to regional security. Previously, he worked as senior Gulf analyst at the Gulf Center for Strategic Studies and as co-director of the Kuwait Programme on Development, Governance and Globalisation in the Gulf States at the London School of Economics (LSE). He is a visiting fellow at the LSE Middle East Centre and an associate fellow at Chatham House in the United Kingdom.
Coffee/tea and light snacks will be served from 13.30. Welcome!

The number of Syrian refugees that are trying to make it to the EU is rising fast. What is more surprising though is where they are not trying to go. They are not headed to the Gulf States because those countries are refusing to let any of them in. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.
Should the Gulf States start allowing refugees? Should America do more? Let us know in the comments below.

GULF SHORES, Ala. (WPMI) Is camping becoming more popular than staying in condos? Some Gulf State Park visitors would say 'yes'.
Every week this summer, the campgrounds of at Gulf State Park are over 90 percent reserved, making it one of the busiest years for the park yet.
"This park becomes a city within itself every day, every week. As it turns over, and people check out, new come in or just people drive in to check the park out," said Randy Stults, a campground manager at Gulf State Park.
The park's popularity increased substantially ever since new amenities, such as a pool and new food options, were added.
"We call about three weeks in advance to get a reservation, it seems like camping has really picked up over the years, especially since they've re-done the area," said Randy Simmons, a visitor from Tuscaloosa.
Simmons and his family try to camp at Gulf State Park at least once a year, and try to avoid staying in local condos.
"You can't beat this atmosphere, the people you meet camping it's just a whole different attitude, it's laid back and we just love to camp," said Simmons.
Although the campgrounds are many times near full capacity, state park officials encourage visitors to not shy away from trying to make a reservations.
They say they often get cancellations, which opens up slots for other campers. Click here to make a reservation.

Kuwaiti researcher Fahd Al-Shelaimi, Chairman of the Gulf Forum for Peace and Security, was recently asked what was preventing the Gulf states from accepting refugees fleeing the war in Syria. "The cost of living in Kuwait is high," Al-Shelaimi responded. He further said: "At the end of the day, you cannot accept other people, who come from a different atmosphere." Al-Shelaimi made the remarks on the France24 Arabic TV channel on March 17, 2015.

The media was talking about fishermen who were mad about the large number of sharks at the pier, disrupting their fishing.
We had to go see the sharks!! We have seen more at other times, but this certainly didn't disappoint! In this video you will see both blacktip and bull sharks.
We found some interesting things happening with some fishermen! They were teasing the sharks. NEVER do what these young men are doing!!
We had real nice footage of a fisherman pulling in a Bluefish. A shark bit it in half before they could get the fish up to the pier. Our camera ran out of space!

Watch a timely conversation featuring Ghaith al-Omari and Jonathan Schanzer on these under-analyzed trends. The conversation will be moderated by FDD President Cliff May.

The Center on Law and Security and the NYU Abu Dhabi Institute presented a panel discussion on Iran, ISIS, and the Future of Gulf Security with:
- Admiral William Fallon, United States Navy (Ret.), Former Commander, U.S. Central Command, Chairman of the Board, CounterTack
- Elizabeth Rosenberg, Senior Fellow and Director of the Energy, Economics and Security Program, Center for a New American Security (CNAS)
- Suzanne Maloney, Senior Fellow at Saban Center for Middle East Policy, Brookings Institution
- Steven Simon, Senior Fellow at the Middle East Institute
Moderated by:
Zachary Goldman '09, Executive Director, Center on Law and Security, NYU School of Law

Traveler Megan McCormick ventures into perhaps the most misunderstood region in the world - the Arab Gulf States.
