Machakos is a town in Kenya, 64 kilometres southeast of Nairobi. It is the capital of the Machakos District in Eastern Province of Kenya. Machakos Town is a major rural centre, and also a satellite town due to its proximity to Nairobi. Its population is rapidly growing and is 192,117 (as of 2009) (this estimation is probably too high, see Discussion). People who live here are mostly the Akambas though it is a cosmopolitan town. Machakos is surrounded by hilly terrain, with a high number of family farms.
Machakos was established in 1887, ten years before Nairobi. Machakos was the first administrative centre for the British colony, but they moved the capital of Kenya to Nairobi in 1899 since Machakos by-passed the Uganda Railway that was under construction. Town and the district were named after Masaku, an Akamba chief.
Sudan-related peace talks were held in Machakos, resulting in the Machakos Protocol on July 20, 2002.
Machakos open air market. Fruits, vegetables and other food stuffs like maize mbemba, beans mboso, etc. are sold here. Major market days are Mondays and Fridays. One can buy second hand clothes mutumba in the open air market, situated differently from the market marikiti.
The local climate is semi arid. The terrain is hilly, the district has an altitude from 1000 to 1600 metres above sea level. Akamba people are the dominant tribe.

On 1st May 1981 CE, in a small town called Sultan Hamud, located in the district of Machakos, KENYA, my grandparents strived to build a House of worship for the local community. It provided a beacon of hope, peace and a place to reflect on the Mercy and Blessings from their Creator.
This Film is a short reflection of the monumental work that was carried out over two years.

Kenya is regarded by many as the 'jewel of East Africa', and has some of the continent's finest beaches, most magnificent wildlife and scenery, and an incredibly sophisticated tourism infrastructure. It is a startlingly beautiful land, from the coral reefs and white sand beaches of the coast to the summit of Mount Kenya, crowned with clouds and bejewelled by strange giant alpine plants.

President Kenyatta Downplays UK Travel Advisory
President Uhuru Kenyatta has downplayed the recent travel advisories issued by the United Kingdom against Kenya saying the country still remains attractive to foreigners from other parts of the world. The President criticized what he sees as double standards on the part of the UK in the issuance of these advisories saying terrorism remains a global threat that's isn’t unique to Kenya. And as Patrick Igunza reports, Kenyatta warmly welcomed the much awaited July visit by US President Barack Obama which comes despite such negative travel advisories.

The national rugby sevens teams was to jet out to South Africa for a week before traveling down under for the Gold coast sevens.
The week away from home looked timely as Kenya Rugby Union worked to bring their house in order.
And it is the Safari sevens that appears to continue to haunt them. The Auckland Metro team, which took part in the event was to depart for New Zealand four days after their scheduled departure.
To set the record straight, our reporter Seth Olale spoke to the team and the Union.

Travel woes as New Zealand rugby players stranded in Kenya
The national rugby sevens teams was to jet out to South Africa for a week before traveling down under for the Gold coast sevens.
The week away from home looked timely as Kenya Rugby Union worked to bring their house in order.
And it is the Safari sevens that appears to continue to haunt them. The Auckland Metro team, which took part in the event was to depart for New Zealand four days after their scheduled departure.
To set the record straight, our reporter Seth Olale spoke to the team and the Union.

STORYLINE:
The Sudanese government and the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army on Saturday agreed on a framework for future talks to end the 19-year civil war in Africa's largest country, officials from both sides said.
Ghazi Salah Eddin Attabani, Sudanese President Omar el-Bashir's peace adviser, and Samson Kwaje, spokesman for the rebel Sudanese People's Liberation Army, said they have reached agreement on the separation of state and religion as well as self-determination for the southern Sudanese.
Both men said the remaining issues would be relatively easy to resolve when the parties meet again next month.
Attabani said that the unity of the country was the priority, but he added that the government would allow an internationally monitored referendum in the south following a six-year interim period to let the people decide whether they want to be part of Sudan.
The interim period would begin once a final peace deal is signed, he said.
Kwaje said "the most critical issues have been solved," including the government's attempts to impose Islamic law,
known as sharia, on southerners who mostly follow other religions.
The Sudanese constitution would be rewritten to ensure that sharia law can be used in the north, but would not infringe on the rights of non-Muslims in the south.
Both men said the talks next month, which will again be held in Kenya, would focus on integrating the rebel leaders
into the national government, sharing the country's oil wealth, ensuring security and organising a cease fire.
Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi, who hosted this round of peace talks in the Kenyan town of Machakos, 45 kilometres (30 miles) southeast of Nairobi, called the agreement historic and urged the delegates to reach a final agreement before he retires later this year.
Moi has led the regional efforts to mediate a peace agreement for ten years.
Sudan's civil war broke out in 1983 when the rebels in the south took up arms against the predominantly Arab and Muslim government in the north, in an attempt to obtain greater autonomy for the south where most people follow traditional beliefs and Christianity.
As many as 2 (m) million people are estimated to have been killed during the conflict, mainly due to war-induced drought, and another 4 (m) million have been forced to flee their homes.

The Opening Ceremony of Sultan Hamud Mosque, KENYA
On 1st May 1981 CE, in a small town called Sultan Hamud, located in the district of Machakos, KENYA, my grandparents strived to build a House of worship for the local community. It provided a beacon of hope, peace and a place to reflect on the Mercy and Blessings from their Creator.
This Film is a short reflection of the monumental work that was carried out over two years.
May Allaah bless those involved in this project, grant them Janatul Firdous and guide us all to the path of righteousness. ameen

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is a U.S. National Recreation Area located in southeastern Nevada and northwestern Arizona. Operated by the National Park Service, Lake Mead NRA follows the Colorado River corridor from the westernmost boundary of Grand Canyon National Park to just north of the cities of Laughlin, Nevada and Bullhead City, Arizona. It includes all of the eponymous Lake Mead as well as the smaller Lake Mohave – reservoirs on the river created by Hoover Dam and Davis Dam, respectively – and the surrounding desert terrain and wilderness.[4]
Formation of Lake Mead began in 1935, less than a year before Hoover Dam was completed.[4] The area surrounding Lake Mead was established as the Boulder Dam Recreation Area in 1936.[5] In 1964, the area was expanded to include Lake Mohave and its surrounding area and became the first National Recreation Area to be designated as such by the U.S. Congress.
