Map
Maralal is a small hillside market town in northern Kenya, lying east of the Loroghi Plateau within the Samburu District. It is the administrative headquarters of the Samburu people. The town has an urban population of 16,281 (1999 census [1]). The market was pioneered by some Somali settlers in the 1920s.
Nearby is the Maralal Game Sanctuary. Maralal is also home to Kenyatta House, the location where Jomo Kenyatta was detained prior to his release. The town also serves as a base for tourist activities such as bush walking, whitewater rafting and camel riding. It is also known for camel racing and is surrounded by the Maralal National Sanctuary. The famous Maralal camel derby hosted by Yare Safaris is held here. This is a tourist friendly town with many cheap hotels and friendly people.

Samburu county govt. demolishes structures put up illegally in Maralal Primary School

The Samburu county government has demolished structures that were alleged to have been put up illegally inside the Maralal DEB Primary School in Maralal Township. The county government said the developers had been allocated the school land illegally five years ago and had got permission from National Land Commission to demolish any structure erected within school land.

They come to get a front seat for the country's best-known camel race. Tall, strong and ready to go. The players are slow moving animals, due to their long legs. But they can run, and run fast, at speeds up to 65 km per hour. With a sign from local elders, the annual Maralal Camel Derby kicks off. SOUNDBITE (LOCAL LANGUAGE): Local resident "Everyone is welcomed in Maralal to see the camel race. It is a very exciting event in Kenya." Who wins does not seem matter much.
