Black Knight Satellite, Before the Apollo program would ever be able to make the journey across the cis-lunar void to the Moon, NASA's astronauts first needed to learn how to fly, work, and live in space. Between 1965 and 1966, NASA flew an aggressive series of two-man missions into low-Earth orbit, where they practiced and tested many of the flying techniques, spacecraft systems, science and living skills that would be required to ensure that the voyage to and from the Moon was conducted as safely as possible. The flight program that NASA implemented in order to accomplish these lofty goals was known as Project GEMINI.

Project Gemini Tribute - Reaching For The Moon - An Orbiter Film by Timm Humphreys
Project Gemini was overshadowed by the pioneering Mercury flights that came before it, and the historic and dramatic Apollo flights that followed it. But the missions of Project Gemini were vital in proving and rehearsing the techniques that America would need to land men on the moon and return them safely to Earth. The Gemini missions also set a number of firsts in space exploration. And of the 20 Gemini crewman that flew into space, within a few years 11 would fly to the moon, and 6 would leave footprints there. The Gemini VIII crew (Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott) is the only Gemini crew consisting of future moon walkers (and Lunar mission

http://www.thegeekgroup.org - Our massive Tesla coil, Project Gemini, had been feeling under the weather thanks to some surface scarring caused by shrapnel that flew at the towers during tests of another of our projects, Stomper. This caused injuries to the insulation of the tower's copper wire in several small spots. As a result, the windings would arc to one another, and carbonize the coating as well as the wire's own insulation! Thus, Gemini would smoke when operated, as well as not operate at peak condition to begin with. Kidwell took the time to lift the coating from around the damaged areas, lift and separate the damaged wires, scratch

Was done at the lab today and was able to get a video showing how the coils are handling now after the idea of adding a 2nd 100KVA pig, to double our voltage, and quadruple our energy. Compared to last time, the coils are a lot better. Bigger output, and instead of being rapid discharges, it was actually solid flowing streamers.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Gemini
Project Gemini was the second human spaceflight program of NASA, the civilian space agency of the United States government. Project Gemini was conducted between projects Mercury and Apollo, with ten manned flights occurring in 1965 and 1966.
Its objective was to develop space travel techniques in support of Apollo, which had the goal of landing men on the Moon. Gemini achieved missions long enough for a trip to the Moon and back, perfected extra-vehicular activity (working outside a spacecraft), and orbital maneuvers necessary to achieve rendezvous and docking. All manned Gemini flights were launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida using the Titan II GLV launch vehicle...
NASA selected McDonnell Aircraft, which had been the prime contractor for the Project Mercury capsule, to build the Gemini capsule in 1961 and the first capsule was delivered in 1963. The spacecraft was 19 feet long and 10 feet wide with a launch weight of 8,490 pounds. The Gemini capsule first flew with a crew on March 23, 1965.
Gemini was the first manned spacecraft to include an onboard computer, the Gemini Guidance Computer, to facilitate management and control of mission maneuvers. Unlike the Mercury, it used ejection seats, in-flight radar and an artificial horizon—devices similar to those used in the aviation industry.
Unlike Mercury, which could only rotate around the axes of pitch, yaw, and roll to change its orientation in space, the Gemini spacecraft was designed also to translate in all three perpendicular axes (forward/backward, left/right, up/down), and also to alter its orbital inclination and altitude. It used these capabilities to dock with the Agena target vehicle, which had its own rocket engine which could be used to perform larger altitude changes.
A major difference between the Gemini and Mercury spacecraft was that Mercury had all systems other than the reentry rockets situated within the capsule, most of which were accessed through the astronaut's hatchway. In contrast, Gemini housed power, propulsion, and life support systems in a detachable Equipment Module located behind the Reentry Module, which made it similar to the Apollo Command/Service Module design. Many components in the capsule itself were reachable through their own small access doors.
The original intention was for Gemini to land on solid ground instead of at sea, using a Rogallo wing rather than a parachute, with the crew seated upright controlling the forward motion of the craft. To facilitate this, the airfoil did not attach just to the nose of the craft, but to an additional attachment point for balance near the heat shield. This cord was covered by a strip of metal which ran between the twin hatches. This design was ultimately dropped, and parachutes were used to make a sea landing as in Project Mercury. The capsule was suspended at an angle closer to horizontal, so that a side of the heat shield contacted the water first. This eliminated the need for the landing bag cushion used in the Mercury capsule.
Early short-duration missions had their electrical power supplied by batteries; later endurance missions used the first fuel cells in manned spacecraft...

NASA Project Gemini UFO Sightings - Astronaut Eye Witness "They are watching us"
Black Knight Satellite, Before the Apollo program would ever be able to make the journey across the cis-lunar void to the Moon, NASA's astronauts first needed to learn how to fly, work, and live in space.
In a mere 20 months time, 16 NASA astronauts flew a total of 10 missions aboard the GEMINI spacecraft, orbiting the Earth over 600 times while acquiring a wealth of space experience that in the following years would serve to help make the upcoming Apollo lunar program such a resounding success.
The GEMINI astronauts were some of the first men to explore this new ocean over our heads that is known as 'space', and they did indeed see some amazing sights up there during their flights.
Aboard each GEMINI spacecraft was a piece of equipment known as the "Voice Tape Recorder" (VTR). The purpose of the VTR was to give the astronauts the ability to verbally record any thoughts, comments, or observations throughout the course of each flight, primarily during the periods when they were not in radio contact with one of the MSFN (Manned Space Flight Network) ground stations spread out at various locations around the Earth. After radio contact was re-established, the VTR recordings made during the black out periods could then be "dumped" (down-linked) to the MSFN ground station below. Although originally classified, the transcripts of these VTR recordings from all 10 GEMINI missions can today be found in the NASA archives. These documents contain some very intriguing and revealing astronaut conversations that relate to various anomalies they were observing outside their spacecraft during the flights

The Gemini VIII crew (Neil Armstrong and Dave Scott) is the only Gemini crew consisting of future moon walkers (and Lunar mission commanders!)
This movie was made from clips of my various mission sims over the years using Orbiter 2005, Orbiter 2006, Orbiter 2010 and the Gemini Titan 2 Version 4.50 as well as many other add ons. Thanks to the dedicated and talented Gemini add on developers as well as the other numerous Orbiter add on developers, and my special thanks to Dr. Martin Schweiger for Orbiter.
Since 2002 your beautiful creations have made my spaceflight dreams come true.

http://www.thegeekgroup.org - Our massive Tesla coil, Project Gemini, had been feeling under the weather thanks to some surface scarring caused by shrapnel that flew at the towers during tests of another of our projects, Stomper. This caused injuries to the insulation of the tower's copper wire in several small spots. As a result, the windings would arc to one another, and carbonize the coating as well as the wire's own insulation! Thus, Gemini would smoke when operated, as well as not operate at peak condition to begin with. Kidwell took the time to lift the coating from around the damaged areas, lift and separate the damaged wires, scratch away the burnt areas, and then use nail polish and mylar to create new insulation. With this patch Gemini is in full operating form once again. Which means more lightning shows! Hooray!

Gemini 4 (or Gemini IV) was the second manned space flight in NASA's Project Gemini, occurring in June 1965. It was the tenth manned American spaceflight (including two X-15 flights at altitudes exceeding 100 kilometers (54 nmi)). Astronauts James McDivitt and Edward H. White, II circled the Earth 66 times in four days, making it the first US flight to approach the five-day flight of the Soviet Vostok 5. The highlight of the mission was the first space walk by an American, during which White floated free outside the spacecraft, tethered to it, for approximately 20 minutes. Both of these accomplishments helped the United States overcome the So

Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space Programs Overview
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is the United States government agency responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower established the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in 1958[5] with a distinctly civilian (rather than military) orientation encouraging peaceful applications in space science. The National Aeronautics and Space Act was passed on July 29, 1958, disestablishing NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA). The new agency became operational on October 1, 1958.[6][7]

An overview Project Mercury, filmed before the launch of the first manned mission - incredible color archive footage shows early testing of key designs & systems, the astronauts, flight mission control center, launch and recovery of unmanned Mercury capsule, "Little Joe" tests, launch of Mercury capsules with monkeys, testing of the emergency escape tower rocket, assembly of boosters, and test firing of Atlas boosters.
Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States. It ran from 1959 through 1963 with the goal of putting a human in orbit around the Earth and do it before the Soviet Union as part of the early space race. In the first Mercury mission on 5 May 1961,[Alan Shepard became the first American in space; however the Soviet Union had put Yuri Gagarin into space one month earlier. John Glenn became the first American (third overall, following Gagarin and Titov) to reach orbit on February 20, 1962, during the third manned Mercury flight.
The program included 20 unmanned launches, followed by two suborbital and four orbital flights with astronaut pilots. Early planning and research were carried out by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), but the program was officially conducted by its successor organization, NASA. It also absorbed the USAF program Man In Space Soonest which had had the same objectives. Mercury laid the groundwork for Project Gemini and the follow-on Apollo moon-landing program.

Four Days of Gemini 4 - 1965 NASA Space Program Educational Documentary - WDTVLIVE42
Both of these accomplishments helped the United States overcome the Soviet Union's early lead in the Space Race.
The flight also included the first attempt to make a space rendezvous as McDivitt attempted to maneuver his craft close to the Titan II upper stage which launched it into orbit, but this was not successful.
The flight was the first American flight to perform many scientific experiments in space, including use of a sextant to investigate the use of celestial navigation for lunar flight in the Apollo program.
The above information supplied courtesy film made available courtesy the Department of Defence, NASAimages.org and the US National Archives.

Since that time, most US space exploration efforts have been led by NASA, including the Apollo moon-landing missions, the Skylab space station, and later the Space Shuttle.
Shortly after the Space Race began, an early objective was to get a person into Earth orbit as soon as possible, therefore the simplest spacecraft that could be launched by existing rockets was favored. The US Air Force's Man in Space Soonest program considered many manned spacecraft designs, ranging from rocket planes like the X-15, to small ballistic space capsules.[22] By 1958, the space plane concepts were eliminated in favor of the ballistic capsule.[23]
When NASA was created that same year, the Air Force program was transferred to it and renamed Project Mercury. The first seven astronauts were selected among candidates from the Navy, Air Force and Marine test pilot programs. On May 5, 1961, astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space aboard Freedom 7, launched by a Redstone booster on a 15-minute ballistic (suborbital) flight.[24] John Glenn became the first American to be launched into orbit by an Atlas launch vehicle on February 20, 1962 aboard Friendship 7.[25] Glenn completed three orbits, after which three more orbital flights were made, culminating in L. Gordon Cooper's 22-orbit flight Faith 7, May 15–16, 1963.
Based on studies to grow the Mercury spacecraft capabilities to long-duration flights, developing space rendezvous techniques, and precision Earth landing, Project Gemini was started as a two-man program in 1962 to overcome the Soviets' lead and to support the Apollo manned lunar landing program, adding extravehicular activity (EVA) and rendezvous and docking to its objectives. The first manned Gemini flight, Gemini 3, was flown by Gus Grissom and John Young on March 23, 1965.[28] Nine missions followed in 1965 and 1966, demonstrating an endurance mission of nearly fourteen days, rendezvous, docking, and practical EVA, and gathering medical data on the effects of weightlessness on humans.
The U.S public's perception of the Soviet lead in putting the first man in space, motivated President John F. Kennedy to ask the Congress on May 25, 1961 to commit the federal government to a program to land a man on the Moon by the end of the 1960s, which effectively launched the Apollo program.[31]
Apollo was one of the most expensive American scientific programs ever. It cost more than $20 billion in 1960s dollars[32] or an estimated $205 billion in present-day US dollars.[33] (In comparison, the Manhattan Project cost roughly $26.2 billion, accounting for inflation.)[33][34] It used the Saturn rockets as launch vehicles, which were far bigger than the rockets built for previous projects.[35] The spacecraft was also bigger; it had two main parts, the combined command and service module (CSM) and the lunar landing module (LM). The LM was to be left on the Moon and only the command module (CM) containing the three astronauts would eventually return to Earth.
The first person to stand on the Moon was Neil Armstrong, who was followed by Buzz Aldrin, while Michael Collins orbited above. Five subsequent Apollo missions also landed astronauts on the Moon, the last in December 1972. Throughout these six Apollo spaceflights, twelve men walked on the Moon. These missions returned a wealth of scientific data and 381.7 kilograms (842 lb) of lunar samples. Topics covered by experiments performed included soil mechanics, meteoroids, seismology, heat flow, lunar ranging, magnetic fields, and solar wind.[41] The Moon landing marked the end of the space race and as a gesture, Armstrong mentioned mankind[42] when he stepped down on the Moon.

NASA Project Gemini UFO Sightings, Astronaut Eye Witness "They are watching us" [Full Episode]

This is a improved version of a previously uploaded film. The sound and images are substantially improved, and it is in one piece (the earlier version was in 3 parts).
"Begins with the unmanned Gemini I launch in early 1964 and concludes with the recovery of the Gemini II space capsule following the early January 1965 launch. Explains the purposes behind the Gemini Program in testing the various systems and sub-systems necessary to manned space flight. Explains the intricacies of the various systems, their purposes and functions." Covers the period from January 1964-January 1965.
Public domain film from the National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, with the aspect ratio corrected, and 1-pass exposure & color correction applied (cannot be ideal in all scenes).
The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Gemini
There were 2 unmanned Gemini flights in 1964 and 1965, followed by 10 manned flights in 1965 and 1966. All were launched by Titan II launch vehicles...

NASA Project Mercury - 1960 Educational Space Documentary - WDTVLIVE42

Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space Programs Overview
Apollo 17's lunar roving vehicle, 1972
Apollo set major milestones in human spaceflight. It stands alone in sending manned missions beyond low Earth orbit, and landing humans on another celestial body
