Diyala Province (Arabic: ديالى Diyālā) (or Diyala Governorate) is a province in eastern Iraq.
Diyala Governorate extends to the northeast of Baghdad as far as the Iranian border. Its capital is Baqubah. It covers an area of 17,685 square kilometres (6,828 sq mi).
A large portion of the province is drained by the Diyala River, a major tributary of the Tigris. Because of its proximity to two major sources of water, Diyala's main industry is agriculture, primarily dates grown in large groves. The province also contains one of the largest olive groves in the Middle East. It is also recognized as the orange capital of the Middle East. The Hamrin Mountains pass through the governorate.
In 2003, it had an estimated population of some 1,224,000 people. Iraqi Arabs comprise about 82 percent of the governorate, Iraqi Kurds about 16 percent (predominantly in the Khanaquin and Kifri Districts), and Iraqi Turkmen about 2 percent. Around 75% of the population live in the major cities: Baqubah, Muqdadiyah and Khanaqin.
The Iraqi military says its forces have completely liberated the Diyala province from ISIL Takfiri militants, dealing a heavy blow to the terrorists.
Iraqi army sources said they have retaken all populated areas of the eastern province from the Takfiri terrorists. The army further explained that soldiers are now in complete control of all cities, districts and sub-districts of the province. Diyala, located north of the capital Baghdad, was partly controlled by the terrorists for months. The development comes a day after the army announced mop-up operations in Muqdadiyah, which was the terrorists' last stronghold in the province.

ISIS Ambush North of Muqdadiyah Indicates Resurgence in Diyala Province
ISIS militants reportedly ambushed an Iraqi military checkpoint in the village of Sharwain, approximately 11 km north of Muqdadiyah. One ISIS fighter was killed and two others were wounded, while several other militants escaped to nearby agricultural areas. A symmetrical attack of this nature requires a high-degree of operational capacity and freedom of movement, which ISIS sleeper cells in the province have largely been incapable of utilizing since January's clearing operation by Badr Organization militiamen. Experts believe the Diyala province will likely become the renewed focus of security efforts amidst an apparent ISIS reemergence in the area. The recently-elected governor of the province, who is also a senior Shiite Badr commander, has called for renewed clearing operations in the eastern territory.

BAQUBA, IRAQ — The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for two explosions that killed at least 58 and injured more than a hundred people in Iraq’s Diyala province on Monday. The Islamic State has said they were targeting Shi’ite Muslims in the mixed Sunni-Shi’ite province.
The first blast was carried out by a suicide car bomber who hid in a line of wedding motorists. According to Reuters, the bomber killed 51 and injured at least 80 people after he drove his explosive-packed vehicle into an outdoor marketplace near Baquba, a town just 35 miles northeast of Baghdad.

ISIS Runs Away During Firefight With Iraqi Security Forces
"The attacker managed to pass a checkpoint by lining up with a wedding motorcade and then split off with his explosives-packed vehicle to blow it up in a crowded marketplace," Diyala police captain Mohammed al-Tamimi told Reuters.
The second attack killed seven and injured 25 people after a suicide bomber exploded at a checkpoint in the village of Kanaan.
Last year, pro-government militias managed to grab control of the city of Baquba after a year of fierce fighting against Islamic State, however, ISIS fighters continue to clash with the militants across Diyala province, reports the BBC.
Monday’s attacks came just a month after ISIS bombed a crowded marketplace in Diyala province that killed 115 people who had gathered there to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

A woman wearing a vest lined with explosives blew herself up near a popular market and Shiite mosque in the turbulent Diyala province north of Baghdad on Wednesday killing eight civilians - the latest in a growing number of female suicide attacks.
Seven people were wounded in the bombing in Khan Bani Saad, a town 15 kilometres (nine miles) south of Baqouba, Diyala's provincial capital, police said.
Some of the wounded were taken to hospital in Sadr City in Baghdad.
''Between 9 and 10 am, this morning, a woman wearing a belt strapped with explosives blew herself up near a popular market in Khan Bani Saad," Abu Khalid al-Azawi, a resident in the town said.
Meanwhile, a funeral procession was held for one of those killed in the suicide bombing.
Wednesday's bombing was the fourth female suicide attack in Iraq in three months. All have taken place in Diyala province, which has been a major focus of a nationwide campaign that the U.S. military launched last week against al-Qaida in Iraq and other Sunni extremists.
Although female suicide bombings have been fairly rare in Iraq, extremists have been using women more frequently in recent months.
U.S. officers say this indicates the militants are running short of male volunteers.
Another hypothesis is that it could also be that al-Qaida in Iraq believes women are less likely than men to be searched and that explosives are easier to conceal under women's clothing.

Iraqi police said a senior aide to the governor in Diyala province was assassinated in Baqouba on Friday.
Aqil Hamid al-Adili, assistant to the governor for projects affairs, was killed by unidentified gunmen as he sat in a friend's office, according to police.
An investigation was underway in Baqouba, about 60 kilometres (40 miles) northeast of
Baghdad.
Days earlier, Al-Adili had warned of insurgent infiltration in the deadly ambush of 50 US-trained Iraqi soldiers over the weekend in an eastern part of Diyala province near the Iran border.
The unarmed soldiers, dressed in civilian clothing, were heading home on leave when they were stopped at a fake rebel checkpoint on Saturday and killed execution-style.
Baqouba, about 57 kilometres (35 miles) northeast of Baghdad, is within the insurgent-heavy Sunni Triangle area.
Insurgents frequently target Iraqi security forces, who are considered US collaborators, in a bid to destabilise the country's reconstruction efforts.
Hundreds of police and soldiers have been killed in suicide bombings and ambushes since the ouster of Saddam Hussein last year.

Nine US soldiers were killed in a suicide bombing in Diyala province, northeast of Baghdad.
HEADLINE: Deadliest attack on Americans in over a year
----------------------------------------
CAPTION: 9 U.S. Soldiers were killed in a single attack Monday in Iraq. Another 20 were wounded in when a suicide car bomb struck a patrol base. (April 24)

[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE]
It's the single deadliest attack on American ground forces in more than a year.
9-soldiers were killed Monday when a suicide car bomb struck a patrol base northeast of Baghdad.
The attack happened in the Diyala province -- which has been an increasingly dangerous part of Iraq for U.S. Servicemen.
Another 20 soldiers were wounded.
Of those, 15 were later able to return to duty.
Five others, and a wounded Iraqi civilian were evacuated to a medical facility.
The names of the dead soldiers have not been released.
85 U.S. service members have died in Iraq so far this month.

It wasn't just Americans at risk.
At least 48 Iraqis were killed in seven other bombings.

U.S. Forces in Iraq are in the midst of their second day of a massive new operation to weed out insurgents from an area outside of Baghdad.
[Notes:File of U.S. troops]
On Tuesday, 10-thousand U.S. Soldiers poured into Iraq's Diyala Province.
The U.S. military says at least 22 insurgents have been killed by American and Iraqi forces so far
[Notes:Still of insurgents being lined up]
Dubbed "Operation Arrowhead Ripper," the raids involve air assaults under the cover of darkness.
The mission's goal is clear: Wipe out Sunni insurgents, al-Qaida fighters and Shiite militiamen.
SOT: Mike Bednarek, US Military Brigadier-General--
There will not be a safe haven for al-Qaida and its leadership in this province. And if they move from here, we will follow them. We will pursue them and we will eliminate them.
[Notes:Shot of violence in Baghdad]
Military officials acknowledge, though, that there is no guarantee that these cells won't disperse to other regions, even if the mission is successful.
[Notes:Map of diyala]
The province remains difficult to contain because of its tangle of Shiite and Sunni villages, which has provided the needed unrest for various insurgent groups, including Al-Qaida, to melt into.
U.S. officials say there will be no time limits for this current offensive.

STORYLINE:
The Iraqi army and US troops embarked on a joint operation in Iraq's Diyala province to round up members of al-Qaida in Iraq and other militants on Monday, the Iraqi army said.
The Iraqi army said seven suspects were arrested during the raid. Two men were seen being detained by US and Iraqi soldiers.
AP Television footage filmed on Monday showed Iraqi troops and US soldiers jointly searching houses in two villages southwest of the restive city of Baqouba.
The footage also showed smoke rising from a booby-trapped house detonated by US troops.
Last week, six US soldiers were killed and four were wounded as they searched a booby-trapped house in Diyala, during a major operation launched recently by the US military and dubbed Phantom Phoenix, to go after al-Qaida in Iraq and other extremists.
While the operation is countrywide, parts of it are focusing on Diyala, which became an al-Qaida in Iraq stronghold after the militant group was pushed out of Baghdad and the Anbar province west of the capital.
Much of Diyala has remained a killing field in contrast to a decline in violence over the past six months in Baghdad and many other places in Iraq.
At least 273 civilians were slain in Diyala last month, compared to at least 213 in June, according to an Associated Press count.
Over the same span, monthly civilian deaths in Baghdad dropped from at least 838 to at least 182.
On Wednesday, the violence continued.
A woman wearing a belt strapped with explosives blew herself up near a popular market and a Shiite mosque in Khan Bani Saad, a town 15 kilometres (nine miles) south of Baqouba, Diyala's provincial capital, killing eight civilians and wounding seven others, police said.
In the capital, a roadside bomb exploded near a complex of colleges, killing two civilians and wounding ten others, police said.
Among the victims were students, as the bomb exploded during the rush hour of students arriving at their colleges in the Bab al-Mu'dham neighbourhood, police said.
AP Television filmed bloodstained notebooks at the scene of the blast.
The area, where the explosion exploded, houses many colleges and high schools.
Wednesday's violence came one day after a surprise visit made by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to Baghdad during which she warned Iraqi officials not to squander the momentum after what she called many false starts on reconciliation.

Iraq announces 3-day mourning for victims of Diyala bombing
The Iraqi government has announced three days of national mourning after a car bomb killed around 100 people, including women and children, in the eastern province of Diyala.

30 Inmates Killed, 40 Escape From Khalis Prison In Diyala Province, Iraq
Source: https://www.youtube.com/user/videosptv
May 09, 2015 - Iraqi authorities say at least 30 inmates have been killed while trying to escape a prison in the east. According to the spokesman for Iraq's Interior Ministry, a fight broke out between the inmates in Khalis prison in Diyala province and when the guards went to investigate, they were overpowered by the inmates and had their weapons taken. He said 40 inmates managed to escape and 6 police officers were killed during the conflict. The Iraqi official added that some of those who escaped were in jail on terrorism charges.

What is the truth behind protests in Iraq?
The support of the Islamic Republic of Iran has enabled the weak and newly established government of Iraq to stand up to the occupying American forces, says an analyst. The comment comes as Iraq has been the scene of anti-government demonstrations since December 23 when the bodyguards of Finance Minister Rafie al-Issawi were arrested on terrorism-related charges. Demonstrators allege that the arrests were made on sectarian grounds and demand an end to anti-terrorism laws, but the government says it is up to the parliament to decide on abolishing such laws.
On Friday, anti-government protests took place in several Iraqi cities, including Sal

The UN says over 1000 people have been killed in Iraq so far this month after the Takfiri militants overran parts of the northern and western regions of the country.
UN spokesman Rupert Colville says civilians make up the majority of the toll. He also says the death toll includes summary executions and extra-judicial killings of civilians, police, and soldiers who had stopped fighting.
"This figure — which should be viewed very much as a minimum — includes a number of verified summary executions and extra-judicial killings of civilians, police, and soldiers who were hors (de) combat," media outlets quoted Colville as saying on Tuesday.
The UN spokesman also says some 318 others were killed in terrorist attacks in Baghdad and southern Iraq.
The world body says at least 757 people were killed in ISIL-fueled militancy in Nineveh, Diyala and Salahuddin Provinces.
New pictures have emerged online of atrocities and mass killing of Iraqi soldiers and civilians at the hands of militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Recently, a similar gruesome video was released, purportedly showing members of the ISIL Takfiri group brutally killing Shia Muslims in drive-by shootings in Iraq.
Syrian and Iraqi terrorist forces obtained significant numbers of tanks, trucks, and U.S.-origin Humvees in recent military operations in Iraq and those arms are being shipped to al Qaeda rebels in Syria, according to U.S. officials.
U.S. intelligence agencies reported this week that photos of the equipment transfers were posted online by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as ISIS, the ultra-violent terror group that broke away from al Qaeda but shares its goals and philosophy.
Pentagon spokesman Cmdr. Bill Speaks confirmed the weapons transfers and expressed concerns about the captured arms.
"We're aware of reports of some equipment—namely Humvees—and the pictures that have been posted online,"
Speaks added that the loss of the equipment to the terrorist group is "really a matter for the Iraqi government to speak to publicly" because "it is their equipment." army of terrorists funded, armed and supported by Saudi Arabia, the Sunni caliphate of Iraq and the Levant, and NATO.
Otherwise known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the caliphate and its partners in Riyadh and Doha have transplanted tens of thousands of murderous paramilitary jihadists from the battlefields of Syria to the killing fields of Iraq. For the fossilized monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar the objective is to spread a pernicious version of Sunni Islam and thus defeat their longtime Shia Islam rivals, while in the West the financial and global elite are playing a long-running game of conquer and divide, a technique long used by the British Empire.
On Friday, anti-government protests took place in several Iraqi cities, including Salahuddin, Diyala, Kirkuk, and Nineveh Provinces, while demonstrators in the western Anbar Province continued to block off a highway linking Iraq to Syria and Jordan for a 12th successive day. To further discuss the issue, Press TV's News Analysis has conducted an interview with Beirut-based Iraqi political analyst, Basim Abu-Tabikh, to further discuss the issue. He is joined by state of law coalition representative, Sa'ad al-Motallebi in Baghdad and Iraqi political activist Dahlia Wasfi in Wilmington.

What Is ISIS? Wiki 'View History' and more #TMS Trends 6/18/2014
The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (alternatively translated as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria or Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham) (Arabic: الدولة الاسلامية في العراق والشام ʾad-dawla ʾal-islāmiyya fīl-'irāq waš-šām or Arabic: داعش dāʿiš), abbreviated ISIL and ISIS, is an unrecognized state and active jihadist militant group in Iraq and Syria. In its unrecognized self-proclaimed status as an independent state, it claims the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
The group was composed of and supported by a variety of insurgent groups, including its predecessor organisation, the Mujahideen Shura Council, Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), Jaysh al-Fatiheen, Jund al-Sahaba, Katbiyan Ansar Al-Tawhid wal Sunnah, Jeish al-Taiifa al-Mansoura etc., and other clans whose population profess Sunni Islam. Its aim was to establish a caliphate in the Sunni majority regions of Iraq, later expanding this to include Syria.[33] In February 2014, after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIS.
At the height of the Iraq War, its forerunners enjoyed a significant presence in the Iraqi provinces of Al Anbar, Ninawa, Kirkuk, most of Salah ad Din, parts of Babil, Diyala and Baghdad, and claimed Baqubah for a capital city. In the ongoing Syrian Civil War, the group has a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo.
In addition to attacks on government and military targets, the group has claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of Iraqi civilians.[41] Despite significant setbacks for the group during the latter stages of the coalition forces' presence in Iraq, by late 2012 the group was thought to have renewed its strength and more than doubled the number of its members to about 2,500.[42]
A letter and then an audio recording by Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, were leaked to Al Jazeera in 2013, disbanding the Syrian faction of ISIS.[43] However, the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made it clear that he contested this ruling on the basis of Islamic jurisprudence,[44] and the group has since continued to operate in Syria. Starting in April 2013, the group made rapid military gains in controlling large parts of Northern Syria, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described them as "the strongest group".
In early June 2014, following its large-scale offensives in Iraq, ISIS is reported to have seized control of most of Mosul, the second most populous city in Iraq, a large part of the surrounding Nineveh province, and the city of Fallujah. ISIS has also taken control of Tikrit, the administrative center of the Salah ad Din Governorate, with the ultimate goal of capturing Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. ISIS was believed to have only 2,000--3,000 fighters up until the Mosul campaign, but during that campaign it became evident that this number was a gross underestimate.

Iraqi army “liberates” eastern Diyala province

Kurdish Forces Attack Islamic State in Northeast Syria
Syrian Kurdish forces advanced towards an Islamic State stronghold in northeastern Syria on Sunday in an offensive backed by US-led air strikes, a Kurdish official and a monitoring group said.
The Kurdish YPG militia, which last month flushed Islamic State out of the town of Kobane with the help of US and allied air support, launched the offensive in the northeastern Hasaka province overnight.
It is the latest example of coordination between the US-led coalition and the well-organized Syrian Kurdish militia that has been one of Islamic State's toughest enemies in Syria.
The northeastern corner of Syria is strategically important in the fight against Islamic State because it borders areas controlled by the group in Iraq. Islamic State last year declared a cross-border "caliphate" in Syria and Iraq.

ISIS Nearly Pushed Out of Kobani, Syria
Kurdish fighters backed by intense U.S.-led airstrikes pushed the Islamic State group almost entirely out of the Syrian town of Kobani on Monday, marking a major loss for extremists whose hopes for easy victory dissolved into a bloody, costly siege that seems close to ending in defeat.
Fighters raised a Kurdish flag on a hill in the border town near Turkey that once flew the Islamic State group's black banner. It represents a key conquest both for the embattled Kurds and the U.S.-led coalition, whose American coordinator had predicted that the Islamic State group would "impale itself" on Kobani.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and senior Kurdish official Idriss Nassan said the Islamic State group had been nearly expelled, with some sporadic fighting on the eastern edges of the town.

ISIS attack: Suicide bombs kill nearly 60 people in Iraq’s Diyala province - TomoNews

STORYLINE:

STORYLINE:

It wasn't just Americans at risk.
At least 48 Iraqis were killed in seven other bombings.
The violence has not gone unnoticed by the new U.S. Ambassador to Iraq --
SOT: I've been struck, as all of you have, by the level of violence in Iraqi society ..
The deaths also come as the rhetoric over the war is intensifying in Washington.
On Monday top Democrats agreed on legislation that would require the first American troops to head out of Iraq by October First.
A complete pullout would come six months later.
President Bush is promising a veto
SOT "I believe strongly that politicians in Washington shouldn't be telling generals how to do their job. And I believe artificial timetables of withdrawal would be a mistake.

NB. This is a voiceover transcript, not a full shotlist:

A woman wearing a vest lined with explosives blew herself up near a popular market and Shiite mosque in the turbulent Diyala province north of the capital on Wednesday killing eight civilians - the latest in a growing number of female suicide attacks.
Some of the seven people wounded in the bombing in Khan Bani Saad were taken to hospital in Sadr City in Baghdad.
Khan Bani Saad is a town 15 kilometres (nine miles) south of the Diyala's provincial capital Baqouba.
Mushtaba Abdul-Hussein told AP Televison he was taking part in a Shiite religious procession to commemorate the death of Imam al-Hussein when the attack happened.
''While we were gathering to join a religious procession, and an explosion shocked us. We lost consciousness,'' he said.
Wednesday's bombing was the fourth female suicide attack in Iraq in three months, and all have taken place in Diyala province.

Iraq announces 3-day mourning for victims of Diyala bombing
The Iraqi government has announced three days of national mourning after a car bomb killed around 100 people, including women and children, in the eastern province of Diyala.
The Iraqi government made the announcement on Saturday hours after a deadly car bomb explosion struck a busy market in the city of BaniSa’ad in Diyala as people were celebrating Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
The massive explosion, which happened late Friday, also left scores of people injured and destroyed several buildings.
Authorities expect the death toll to rise as rescue teams are still retrieving bodies from under the debris.
The government under Iraqi Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi has also called a defense council meeting to discuss the recent spike in bombings across the country.
ISIS Takfiri terrorist organization has claimed responsibility for the attack. Iraq has been witnessing near-daily bombings that are often claimed by ISIS.

DAVID ICKE - ISIL CRISIS is Just Another PERCEPTION DECEPTION & Problem, Reaction, Solution
F. William Engdahl and other historians have shown how the British Empire ruthlessly conquered the Arab Middle East, an effort spurred on when it realized oil would eclipse coal as the dominant energy source in the 20th century. As World War I raged in Europe, the British worked with France, Italy and Russia to wrestle the region away from the Ottoman Turks, who had enjoyed uncontested control for centuries. israel zion zionist Israeli Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu would like to see the al-Qaeda spin-off ISIS attack Iran in a repeat of the Iran-Iraq War, a conflict that lasted eight years and cost Iraq 500,000 lives and Iran more than 750,000. According to Netanyahu and the Israelis, a comparable or larger death toll resulting from a war between Sunni and Shia Muslims would be preferable to Iran possessing a nuclear weapon.

What is the truth behind protests in Iraq?
What is the truth behind protests in Iraq?
The support of the Islamic Republic of Iran has enabled the weak and newly established government of Iraq to stand up to the occupying American forces, says an analyst. The comment comes as Iraq has been the scene of anti-government demonstrations since December 23 when the bodyguards of Finance Minister Rafie al-Issawi were arrested on terrorism-related charges. Demonstrators allege that the arrests were made on sectarian grounds and demand an end to anti-terrorism laws, but the government says it is up to the parliament to decide on abolishing such laws.
