Baghdad (Arabic: بغداد, Baġdād, IPA: [bæɣˈdæːd]) is the capital of Republic of Iraq, as well as the coterminous Baghdad Province. The population of Baghdad as of 2011 is approximately 7,216,040, making it the largest city in Iraq, the second largest city in the Arab World (after Cairo, Egypt), and the second largest city in Western Asia (after Tehran, Iran).
Located along the Tigris River, the city was founded in the 8th century and became the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate. Within a short time of its inception, Baghdad evolved into a significant cultural, commercial, and intellectual center for the Islamic World. This in addition to housing several key academic institutions (e.g. House of Wisdom) garnered the city a worldwide reputation as the "Center of Learning". Throughout the High Middle Ages, Baghdad was considered to be the largest city in the world with an estimated population of 1,200,000 people. The city was largely destroyed at the hands of the Mongol Empire in 1258, resulting in a decline that would linger through many centuries due to frequent plagues and multiple successive empires. With the recognition of Iraq as an independent state (formerly the British Mandate of Mesopotamia) in 1938, Baghdad gradually regained some of its former prominence as a significant center of Arabic culture.
Baghdad Province is one of the most developed parts of Iraq, with a better infrastructure than much of Iraq, though heavily damaged from the invasion in 2003 and continuing violence today. It also has one of the highest rates for terrorism in the world with bombs, suicide attackers, and hit squads operating in the city.
Baghdad has at least 12 bridges spanning the Tigris river - joining the east and west of the city. The Sadr City district of the capital is the most densely populated area in Iraq.
Baghdad is governed by the Baghdad Provincial Council. Representatives to the Baghdad Provincial Council were elected by their peers from the lower councils of the administrative districts in Baghdad in numbers proportional to the population of the various districts that were represented.

Islamic State Attacks Iraq Provincial Capital: Officials
Islamic State fighters attacked a government complex in the heart of Ramadi on Friday, part of an apparently coordinated assault to seize full control of the provincial capital west of Baghdad. Gunmen fired from rooftops at the buildings, which house the Anbar governorate building and police headquarters, while security forces and tribal fighters tried to prevent the militants from advancing. Mosques broadcast appeals for reinforcements to prevent the Sunni militants taking full control of Ramadi, which would be a major setback for government forces after they broke an Islamic State siege of Iraq's biggest oil refinery this week.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) has launched a major attack on the Iraqi city of Ramadi, capital of the troubled western province of Anbar, security officials have said, resulting in the killing of at least 20 soldiers.
The assault came as Joe Biden, the US vice-president, arrived in Istanbul on Friday with a view to push Turkey to step up its role in the international coalition's fight against the ISIL.
Al Jazeera's Imran Khan, reporting from Baghdad, said pro-government forces had called in reinforcements to push back the offensive on Ramadi that was coming from four sides.

Iraqi Militants In Heavy Clashes With The Iraqi Army In Anbar Province
The Iraq government has lost control of the strategic city of Falluja, west of Baghdad, say officials and witnesses.
Al-Qaeda-linked militants now control the south of the city. An Iraqi reporter there says tribesmen allied with al-Qaeda hold the rest of Falluja.
The United States said it would speed up its deliveries of missiles and surveillance drones to Iraq as the Baghdad government battles a resurgence of Al-Qaeda linked militants.
The White House, meanwhile, dismissed claims that the fighting, which has seen militants retake the city of Fallujah, was a result of President Barack Obama's decision to withdraw US troops.
Two Iraqi Army soldiers were wounded when an Improvised Explosive Device exploded to the north of Babel province showing that the fighting is spreading over Iraq.
"Unidentified gunmen emplaced a bomb nearby a security checkpoint, that belongs to the Iraqi Army/ 31st Brigade/ exploded at the entrance of Mussayib district of northern Hilla," noting that "The explosion of the IED resulted in wounding two soldiers of the security checkpoint.""The security forces blocked off the explosion area and transported the wounded soldiers to the hospital for treatment,"
The house of Fallujah Police Commander was detonated by gunmen on Monday. "The house of the Colonel Mohamed Allawi, the police commander of Fallujah Police Forces, was detonated by gunmen," noting that "The explosion resulted in huge material damages to the house.""The explosion did not cause any human causalities since the house was empty at the explosion time,"

More than 3 million Iraqis have been displaced due to conflicts in the country from January 2014 through June 2015, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on Tuesday.
"Most of the IDPs [internally displaced person] have been displaced to the Baghdad governorate (45 percent) or within the Anbar governorate (35 percent)," IOM spokesman Joel Millman said in a press conference at the U.N. headquarters in Geneva.
Millman said the majority of IDPs in Iraq were originally either from the governorate of Anbar (1,162,998 individuals), Nineveh (1,052,016) or Salah al-Din (453,054).
According to the IOM, 514,562 families (3,087,372 individuals) in Iraq have been internally displaced and are dispersed across all of Iraq's 18 governorates.
According to the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR), around the world, almost 60 million have been displaced by conflict and persecution, and nearly 20 million of them are refugees. More than half are children.
The UNHCR said 13.9 million new people had been displaced in 2014 alone.
Iraq has plunged into a security vacuum since June 2014 when Daesh stormed the northern province of Mosul.

Imam Hassan, the 2nd Infallible Imam, was born in the holy city of Medina on Ramadan 15 in the third year after Hijrah.
2… The United Nations has released its monthly report on casualties in Iraq, bringing the total number of civilians killed in 2015 to almost 4,000.
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Mr. Ján Kubiš said in a statement that 665 civilians were killed in June, with 1,032 more injured. Iraqi Security Forces lost 801 members, excluding the fighters in the ongoing operations in Anbar Province. 655 members of the ISF were injured.
Baghdad Governorate suffered almost 1,000 civilian casualties (324 killed, 650 injured). Figures for other areas of the country include: in Anbar 136 killed and 163 injured, Diyala suffered 87 killed and 157 injured, while Salahuddin recorded 75 killed and 52 injured in addition to Nineveh recording 27 kills and Kirkuk 7 killed and 8 injured.
Kubiš said that the terrorists of the so called IS and sectarian extremists are largely responsible for this violence which has affected all aspects of life in Iraq.
3... The First Higher Criminal Court in Bahrain stripped 56 people of their nationality and ordered them to pay fines ranging from 500 to 10,500 Bahrain Dinars. The defendants were tried under the terrorism law of 2006, and accused of engaging in “terrorist” activities in Bahrain. More specifically, they were charged with allegedly establishing a terrorist group called “Al-Ashtar Brigades” which smuggled firearms into Bahrain and ran training camps in Bahrain in order to plan a terrorist attack between 2012 and 2013. Four of the accused were acquitted.
It is important to mention that, at the time of the alleged criminal activity, nine of the defendant’s sentenced fall under the category of children, under the age of 18, including two 15-year-old boys.
4... Two Takfiri assailants on a motorcycle shot dead three Shia welders at a shop in Quetta, in what police said as an act of targeted killing of Shia settlers.
Senior police official said it appeared to be a “targeted killing of Shia settlers” as the victims were from Punjab.
Police sources said that the killing took place at Quetta's Sirki Road adding that all the victims were hit with multiple bullets.
5... In an apparent hate crime, several Muslim graves in a Nottingham cemetery have been vandalized in the wake of Tunisia terror attack, sparking condemnations from the British community.
Nottingham deputy leader condemned the desecration of Muslim graves at High Wood cemetery in Bulwell as an attempt to “divide” communities.
At least 27 people died when a terrorist opened fire on a seaside hotel in Tunisia, according to authorities.
Distressed by the attack, Muslim families called for installing CCTV cameras at the Muslim graves to avert similar attacks in the future.
6... Meeting the growing demand of population in Muslim-majority Kazakhstan, Halal food industry has achieved huge successes over the past decade, with halal food entering the menus of Muslims and non-Muslims alike.
Kazakhstan Halal Industry Association chairman Marat Sarsenbayev said that in the past 10 years, the consumption of halal food in the country had grown in tandem with the increase in the Muslim population.
While halal restaurants and cafes were scarce in the capital city of Astana 10 years ago, many have sprung up in recent years.
Halal food has made it as well into the main supermarkets which started offering different types of halal meat.
The number of halal food enterprises in Kazakhstan has grown by leaps and bounds - from only a paltry eight such businesses in 2005, the number swelled to 587 in 2012.

"Ramadi is a crucial city for ISIL as it attempts to consolidate its grip over all of Anbar province," Khan said.
Sources told Al Jazeera tens of Iraqi soldiers had been abducted near Ramadi while at least 20 Iraqi soldiers and eight ISIL fighters had been killed in the fighting.
"Clashes are ongoing around the city. A series of mortar attacks have targeted areas inside the city, including provincial council buildings and a police post," a security official told the AFP news agency said.
Adhal al-Fahdawi, a member of the Anbar provincial council, said on Friday that ISIL had managed to capture part of an eastern district called Mudhiq but pro-government forces had stopped their advance and were encircling the fighters there.
"The security forces need support because we have not received any back-up from the army's air force or the coalition," Fahdawi said, referring to the US-led air campaign launched in August.
Parts of the restive province, which borders Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and the Baghdad governorate, have been out of government control since January.
ISIL, which also controls large parts of Syria, spearheaded a major offensive in Iraq in June, seizing territory, including much of Anbar.
A fresh spate of attacks in recent weeks has seen the armed group extend their grip over the province, where only a handful of pockets remain under the control of Iraqi security forces backed by Shia armed groups and Sunni tribal fighters.
US-Turkey talks
Biden met the Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutogulu on Friday and will hold talks with the President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday.
Biden's visit follows weeks of public bickering between the two NATO allies. The Turkish president insists if the US wants his help, it must focus less on fighting the ISIL and more on toppling Syrian President Bashar Assad. Erdogan wants the US-led coalition to set up a security zone in northern Syria to give moderate fighters a place to recoup and launch attacks.
The obvious compromise would be if Washington shifted its policy on Syria to do more to force out Assad, and Turkey agreed to do more against ISIL, said James Jeffrey, former US ambassador to Turkey and Iraq who is now at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.

I fly into Erbil, Kurdistan-Iraq. But this is nothing like Baghdad; it's peaceful and full of culture. I wander around a bazaar, see a bit of the citadel, and then do a rip around the city in a taxi.

The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (alternatively translated as Islamic State in Iraq and Syria or Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham) (Arabic: الدولة الاسلامية في العراق والشام ʾad-dawla ʾal-islāmiyya fīl-'irāq waš-šām or Arabic: داعش dāʿiš), abbreviated ISIL and ISIS, is an unrecognized state and active jihadist militant group in Iraq and Syria. In its unrecognized self-proclaimed status as an independent state, it claims the territory of Iraq and Syria, with implied future claims intended over more of the Levant, including Lebanon, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, and Southern Turkey.
The group was composed of and supported by a variety of insurgent groups, including its predecessor organisation, the Mujahideen Shura Council, Al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI), Jaysh al-Fatiheen, Jund al-Sahaba, Katbiyan Ansar Al-Tawhid wal Sunnah, Jeish al-Taiifa al-Mansoura etc., and other clans whose population profess Sunni Islam. Its aim was to establish a caliphate in the Sunni majority regions of Iraq, later expanding this to include Syria.[33] In February 2014, after an eight-month power struggle, al-Qaeda cut all ties with ISIS.
At the height of the Iraq War, its forerunners enjoyed a significant presence in the Iraqi provinces of Al Anbar, Ninawa, Kirkuk, most of Salah ad Din, parts of Babil, Diyala and Baghdad, and claimed Baqubah for a capital city. In the ongoing Syrian Civil War, the group has a large presence in the Syrian governorates of Ar-Raqqa, Idlib and Aleppo.
In addition to attacks on government and military targets, the group has claimed responsibility for attacks that have killed thousands of Iraqi civilians.[41] Despite significant setbacks for the group during the latter stages of the coalition forces' presence in Iraq, by late 2012 the group was thought to have renewed its strength and more than doubled the number of its members to about 2,500.[42]
A letter and then an audio recording by Ayman al-Zawahiri, the leader of al-Qaeda, were leaked to Al Jazeera in 2013, disbanding the Syrian faction of ISIS.[43] However, the group's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, made it clear that he contested this ruling on the basis of Islamic jurisprudence,[44] and the group has since continued to operate in Syria. Starting in April 2013, the group made rapid military gains in controlling large parts of Northern Syria, where the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described them as "the strongest group".
In early June 2014, following its large-scale offensives in Iraq, ISIS is reported to have seized control of most of Mosul, the second most populous city in Iraq, a large part of the surrounding Nineveh province, and the city of Fallujah. ISIS has also taken control of Tikrit, the administrative center of the Salah ad Din Governorate, with the ultimate goal of capturing Baghdad, the Iraqi capital. ISIS was believed to have only 2,000--3,000 fighters up until the Mosul campaign, but during that campaign it became evident that this number was a gross underestimate.

Ctesiphon
Ctesiphon (Persian: تيسفون, Tīsfūn; Arabic: قطيسفون, Quṭaisifūn; others) was the imperial capital of the Parthian Empire and the Sasanian Empire. It was one of the great cities of late ancient Mesopotamia.
It was situated across the Tigris from where the Greek city of Seleucia stood and northeast of ancient Babylon. Today, the remains of the city lie in Baghdad Governorate, Iraq, approximately 35 km (22 mi) south of the city of Baghdad.

Iraqi Militants In Heavy Clashes With The Iraqi Army In Anbar Province

Basra
Basra
Basra, also written Basrah (Arabic: البصرة; BGN: Al Başrah), is the capital of Basra Governorate, located on the Shatt al-Arab river in southern Iraq between Kuwait and Iran. It had an estimated population of 952,441 as of 2007, and 3.5 million of 2012. Basra is also Iraq's main port, although it does not have deep water access, which is handled at the port of Umm Qasr.
The city is part of the historic location of Sumer, the home of Sinbad the Sailor, and a proposed location of the Garden of Eden. It played an important role in early Islamic history and was built in 636 AD or 14 AH. It is Iraq's second largest and most populous city after Baghdad. Basra is consistently one of the hottest cities on the planet, with summer temperatures regularly exceeding 45 °C (113 °F).
