STORYLINE:
A leader of Ansar al-Sunnah, a group linked to al-Qaida in Iraq responsible for kidnappings and beheadings, has been captured by Iraqi and U.S. forces, the prime minister's office confirmed on Saturday.
Muntasir Hamoud Ileiwi al-Jubouri and two of his aides were arrested near Muqdadiyah, 90 kilometres (56 miles) northeast of Baghdad, late on Friday, said Brigadier Qassim al-Mussawi, spokesman for the General Command of the Iraqi Armed Forces.
The General Command of the Armed Forces is the prime minister's military office.
He was arrested in Al-Taeyh, a village south of Muqdadiyah, al-Mussawi added.
The arrests were made during an hour-long operation based on intelligence information, al-Mussawi said later at a press conference. All three were apprehended without resistance.
Documents and assault rifles were seized with the three men, but no details were available.
Ansar al-Sunnah is a radical Sunni group responsible for deadly attacks against civilians and U.S. forces, kidnappings and beheadings.
The Sunni militant group has claimed responsibility for numerous suicide attacks, the August 2004 execution of 12
Nepalese hostages and a December 2004 explosion at a U.S. military mess hall in Mosul that killed 22 people.
Ansar al-Sunna is part if the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organisation of insurgent groups - including
al-Qaida in Iraq - that was co-founded by the late Jordanian-born terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Further south, Iraqi forces and Sunni tribes have managed to liberate 12 villages and towns in Mansouriya district, north of Baqubah. According to Iraqi officials, at least 30 Takfiris were killed there, and their vehicles and equipment confiscated. Right now a clean-up operation is underway to ensure a safe return for the displaced people.

STORYLINE:
A leader of Ansar al-Sunnah, a group linked to al-Qaida in Iraq responsible for kidnappings and beheadings, has been captured by Iraqi and U.S. forces, the prime minister's office confirmed on Saturday.
Muntasir Hamoud Ileiwi al-Jubouri and two of his aides were arrested near Muqdadiyah, 90 kilometres (56 miles) northeast of Baghdad, late on Friday, said Brigadier Qassim al-Mussawi, spokesman for the General Command of the Iraqi Armed Forces.
The General Command of the Armed Forces is the prime minister's military office.
He was arrested in Al-Taeyh, a village south of Muqdadiyah, al-Mussawi added.
The arrests were made during an hour-long operation based on intelligence information, al-Mussawi said later at a press conference. All three were apprehended without resistance.
Documents and assault rifles were seized with the three men, but no details were available.
Ansar al-Sunnah is a radical Sunni group responsible for deadly attacks against civilians and U.S. forces, kidnappings and beheadings.
The Sunni militant group has claimed responsibility for numerous suicide attacks, the August 2004 execution of 12
Nepalese hostages and a December 2004 explosion at a U.S. military mess hall in Mosul that killed 22 people.
Ansar al-Sunna is part if the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organisation of insurgent groups - including
al-Qaida in Iraq - that was co-founded by the late Jordanian-born terrorist mastermind Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

A suicide bomber killed at least 32 mourners and injured dozens at a funeral for the nephew of a Shiite politician in Muqdadiyah, a town 90 kilometres (60 miles) north of Baghdad, on Wednesday.
More than 100 mourners were standing in a cemetery in Muqdadiyah for the burial of a nephew of Ahmed al-Bakka when the bomber struck, the Diyala provincial police said.
The cemetery was strewn with body parts and the tombstones were stained with blood.
At least 42 were injured, a doctor at Muqdadiyah hospital said.
One eyewitness said the government was not doing enough to deal with the security situation.
"We elected this government for nothing," he said.
Al-Bakka had survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday that killed his nephew.
Al-Bakka is the head of the local Dawa party, led by Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari and a main partner in the country's largest Shiite political coalition, the United Iraqi Alliance.
A senior official in the Dawa party said such attacks were meant to exert pressure on the United Iraqi Alliance.
The increased violence came as Iraq's three major political parties were close to forming a coalition government that would include Shiites, Sunni Arabs and Kurds, according to a Shiite politician.
Preliminary results from Iraq's recent elections give the governing United Iraqi Alliance a big lead, but one that would still require forming a coalition with other groups.
Wednesday's attack was one several across Iraq that killed a total of 53 people - making it the deadliest day since the December 15 elections.

Further reports say insurgents also attacked a convoy of 60 tanker trucks with rocket propelled grenades and machine guns, destroying three of the tankers and damaging 15 others, according to police.
Three Iraqi army vehicles, which had been guarding the convoy, were also destroyed in the attack about 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.
Tanker truck drivers stopped transporting gasoline from Iraq's largest refinery in Beiji on Dec. 18 because of security concerns. The drivers began
transporting fuel again this week after being promised increased security.
The injured youth was taken to a hospital nearby.

Diyala, CNN Indonesia -- Pasukan Irak berhasil merebut kembali seluruh daerah yang berisi warga sipil di provinsi Diyala, Irak timur, dari cengkraman kelompok militan ISIS, Senin (26/1).
Keberhasilan ini semakin mengobarkan semangat pasukan Irak yang kini tengah berusaha memukul mundur ISIS dari ibukota Baghdad.
"Kami mengumumkan pembebasan Diyala dari kelompok ISIS," kata Staf Letnan Jenderal Abdulamir al-Zaidi, seperti ditulis Al-Arabiya, Senin (26/1).
"Pasukan Irak telah kembali memegang kendali penuh atas seluruh daerah dan kabupaten di provinsi Diyala," kata Zaidi melanjutkan.
Diyala telah menjadi medan pertempuran antara pasukan militer Irak dan kelompok militan ISIS selama beberapa bulan terakhir, terutama di daerah Jalawla dan Saadiyah di sebelah utara provinsi ini. Kelompok militan ISIS juga berulang kali menyerang kota Muqdadiyah, namun tak pernah berhasil menguasai kota ini.
Pertempuran terakhir di daerah berpenghuni di provinsi Diyala dimulai pada Jumat (23/1) lalu di daerah desa dekat Muqdadiyah, sebelah timur dari ibukota Diyala, Baquba.
Zaidi dan kepala dewan distrik, Adnan al-Tamimi menyatakan bahwa pasukan Irak kini menguasai seluruh wilayah tersebut.
Namun, keberhasilan tersebut sarat dengan pertumpahan darah. Zaidi mengatakan bahwa sekitar 58 anggota pasukan pro-pemerintah tewas dan 248 lainnya terluka dalam pertempuran tersebut.
Sementara di pihak ISIS, lebih dari 50 anggota kelompok ini dipastikan meninggal.
Zaidi menambahkan bahwa ada ribuan bom yang ditinggalkan oleh ISIS di sekitar desa di sebelah utara Muqdadiyah. Ini merupakan pekerjaan rumah yang besar yang harus segera diselesaikan militer Irak.

AP Television News filmed clashes between insurgents and Iraqi security troops on Wednesday in the restive neighbourhood of Azamiyah in northern Baghdad.
Gunfire could be heard in the streets as Iraqi troops were seen poised to launch an imminent attack.
The troops seized weapons and ammunition they found at al-Mufti mosque, said an Iraqi army colonel.
Various kinds of seized weapons and ammunition could be seen in the back of a military vehicle.
Elswhere, in what has been a a particularly bloody week in Iraq, a bomb hidden in an air conditioner exploded in the mayor's office in Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometres (56 miles) north of Baghdad.
The mayor, Sheik Allaywi Farhan al-Dulaimi, a member of the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party was killed and three of his guards were wounded, police said.
Mourners gathered at his house where his body lay before he was to be taken away for burial.

Diyala, CNN Indonesia -- Pasukan Irak berhasil merebut kembali seluruh daerah yang berisi warga sipil di provinsi Diyala, Irak timur, dari cengkraman kelompok militan ISIS, Senin (26/1).
Keberhasilan ini semakin mengobarkan semangat pasukan Irak yang kini tengah berusaha memukul mundur ISIS dari ibukota Baghdad.
"Kami mengumumkan pembebasan Diyala dari kelompok ISIS," kata Staf Letnan Jenderal Abdulamir al-Zaidi, seperti ditulis Al-Arabiya, Senin (26/1).
"Pasukan Irak telah kembali memegang kendali penuh atas seluruh daerah dan kabupaten di provinsi Diyala," kata Zaidi melanjutkan.
Diyala telah menjadi medan pertempuran antara pasukan militer Irak dan kelompok militan ISIS selama beberapa bulan terakhir, terutama di daerah Jalawla dan Saadiyah di sebelah utara provinsi ini. Kelompok militan ISIS juga berulang kali menyerang kota Muqdadiyah, namun tak pernah berhasil menguasai kota ini.
Pertempuran terakhir di daerah berpenghuni di provinsi Diyala dimulai pada Jumat (23/1) lalu di daerah desa dekat Muqdadiyah, sebelah timur dari ibukota Diyala, Baquba.
Zaidi dan kepala dewan distrik, Adnan al-Tamimi menyatakan bahwa pasukan Irak kini menguasai seluruh wilayah tersebut.
Namun, keberhasilan tersebut sarat dengan pertumpahan darah. Zaidi mengatakan bahwa sekitar 58 anggota pasukan pro-pemerintah tewas dan 248 lainnya terluka dalam pertempuran tersebut.
Sementara di pihak ISIS, lebih dari 50 anggota kelompok ini dipastikan meninggal.
Zaidi menambahkan bahwa ada ribuan bom yang ditinggalkan oleh ISIS di sekitar desa di sebelah utara Muqdadiyah. Ini merupakan pekerjaan rumah yang besar yang harus segera diselesaikan militer Irak.
