NASA on alert as HUGE Asteroid 2014-YB35 is on a Near-Collision Course with Earth A MAMMOTH asteroid capable of wiping out an entire country is on a near-collision course with Earth, it has emerged. The 1,000-metre wide monster will hurtle terrifyingly close to the planet within days, sparking fears of an unprecedented disaster. The object called ‘2014-YB35’ is almost the same size as Ben Nevis and will skim the Earth on FRIDAY travelling at more than 23,000 mph. Small meteorites often pass close by however one of this size is a once in 5,000-year occurrence, according to concerned astronomers. Experts warn it is only a matter of time before an asteroid capable of “lifer altering” damage collides with our planet. Bill Napier, professor of astronomy at the University of Buckinghamshire, said there is a “very real risk” of a comet or damaging asteroid hitting Earth. Peanut-Shaped Near Earth Asteroid Captured by NASA

A mile-long asteroid that raced past Earth July 25 at about 45,000 miles per hour -- at a safe distance of 4.5 million miles -- was imaged by radar telescopes so that astronomers like Cornell's Sean Marshall could discern its precise orbit and physical shape. Using NASA's Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, California, and the National Science Foundation's Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, the space agency's scientists bounced radar signals off the passing asteroid -- named 1999 JD6 -- to produce images of the peanut-shaped celestial body as it zipped by Earth. The Goldstone radar signal was transmitted toward the asteroid, and the Green Bank Telescope received the radar echoes. Marshall then used the National Science Foundation's Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico on July 29 to re-examine the asteroid in further detail. "I'm interested in this particular asteroid because estimates of its size from previous observations -- at infrared wavelengths -- have not agreed," said Marshall, a Cornell doctoral student in the field of astronomy. "The radar data will allow us to conclusively resolve the mystery of its size to better understand this interesting little world." Radar images of asteroids -- gathered from millions of miles away in some cases -- have resolutions as small as 12 feet, with 1999 JD6 at about 30 feet. "All of these images will allow us to determine its size and shape and measure its rotation rate -- no other Earth-based observations can match the resolution of the radar," said Marshall. "The only way to get a better shape model would be with a spacecraft flyby." NASA places a priority on protecting Earth by detecting and tracking asteroids. In fact, the robust detection program has discovered more than 90 percent of the large near-Earth asteroids. The orbit of asteroid 1999 JD6 swings past Earth, Venus and Mercury. It comes within 4.4 million miles of Earth -- about 18.6 times the distance of the moon from the Earth. The next time the asteroid gets this close to Earth will be in July 2054. NASA's 2014 near-Earth project building momentum

NASA released an animation Thursday, profiling a planned mission to capture and redirect asteroids. The images show a space crew being rocketed up on the Orion spacecraft to rendezvous with the relocated asteroid. The animation also shows the astronauts engaging in a space walk and the collection of samples. The mission comes as part of President Barack Obama's 2014 budget for NASA. The aim is to come to greater understanding of near-Earth objects and to neutralise any threats to the planet. The animation is part of a consolation process on how best to move forward in line with the NASA's goals. A team of engineers and scientists are working on alternatives, as are members of the public who have been encouraged to present ideas for mission planning.

While more and more people are expressing that suffering in the form of mass anti-government demonstrations in nearly every country, Mother Nature is expressing this suffering in the form of environmental upheaval. Deluges, meteor fireballs, 'thunder-snow', unseasonal tornadoes, 'super-storms'... October 2014 had it all. A record-breaking hurricane/typhoon season on both sides of the Pacific brought near-constant flooding to Mexico and Japan. Dozens of spectacular meteor fireballs - from the US to India and Europe to Latin America were caught on camera last month. With most of the Arctic 'Taiga' already covered in snow, increased precipitation levels are translating into record-early snow cover in North America. The now-familiar scene of vehicles being washed down city streets by raging torrents of water occurred this month in Montpelier, Genoa, and Athens. While there were fewer strong earthquakes than we've become used to in recent years, volcanic activity remains high, with Costa Rica's Turrialba Volcano erupting for the first time in 150 years, and Sakurajima Volcano in Japan sending an ash plume 4.5km high. In this presentation, Peter proposes a system for the remote, real-time detection of UFO’s in the near-Earth environment, using passive, multi-static, frequency-modulated (FM) radar. The system capitalizes on the use of multiple, time-synchronized radio receivers to capture high-frequency radio signals reflected from a target. The time-lapse between received signals, together with three-dimensional Doppler-shift analysis, permits calculation of target’s location, velocity, acceleration, flight path, and other parameters, possibly to include target size estimation. Signal analysis of the reflected signal, combined with analysis of target characteristics, will permit discrimination between suspected UFO’s, and targets of terrestrial origin. One application proposed may allow detection of UFO’s to a range of at least 27,600 kilometers from Earth.
