Rosso

Rosso is the major city of south-western Mauritania and capital of Trarza region. It is situated on the Senegal River at the head of year-round navigation. The town is 204 km south of the capital Nouakchott. The Arabic name is Al-Quwarib.

History

Rosso was once the capital of the Emirate of Trarza, a Precolonial Sahrawi dominated state.

Under French colonial rule Senegal and Mauritania were administered as a single entity. When independence came, the new frontier was drawn along the Senegal River, thus splitting the small town of Rosso in two. This article refers to Mauritanian Rosso, on the northern bank of the river.

Originally a staging-post for the gum arabic trade, Rosso has grown rapidly since independence. From a population of a mere 2 300 in 1960 it has now overtaken Kaédi to become the 3rd largest city in the country with 48 922 inhabitants (2000 census).

Languages

South-western Mauritania is predominantly a Wolof -speaking area but many members of Mauritania's other ethnic groups have moved to the town to escape the severe problems of desertification further north.

Paula Ortiz

Paula Ortiz Álvarez (Saragossa; 8 January 1979) it is a Spanish director, screenwriter and producing that works in Get in the Pictures Productions and Amapola Films, and besides is professor in the Degree of Audiovisual Communication of the University of Barcelona, and collaborates with the University of Saint Jorge of Saragossa.

With his first feature film, Of your window to mine, was nominated to the prize Goya 2011 to better novel director and won the prize Pilar Looked 2011 in the Seminci of Valladolid.

Biography

Paula Ortiz was born in Saragossa in 1979. Graduate in Hispanic Philology by the University of Saragossa (2002) and máster in Writing for Cinema and TV of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (2003), enjoyed of a scholarship FPU of the Ministry of Education (2004–2008), working like researcher and professor in the area of Studies of Cinema and other Audiovisual Media of the Department of History of the Art of the University of Saragossa. Fruit of this work was his thesis doctoral, titled The cinematographic script: update of his theoretical and practical bases, directed by Agustín Sánchez Vidal and defended on 31 January 2011 in the University of Saragossa.
