Se conoce como Conflicto del Beagle al desacuerdo entre la República Argentina y la República de Chile sobre la determinación de la traza de la boca oriental del canal Beagle, afectando la soberanía de las islas ubicadas dentro y al sur del mismo y al este del meridiano del cabo de Hornos y sus espacios marítimos adyacentes.
Chile and Argentina were at odds over the Islands of the Beagle Channel since the late 19th century. Its a territory between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans.
They turned to mediators such as the Hague Tribunal, the United States Attorney General and the Queen of England. However, none of them managed to bring them in line.
Then just hours before the Christmas of 1978, Argentina moved its troops and everything pointed that war was inevitable.

Both countries had the logic of war behind them. They were both militarised, they were both sending troops to the borders. Actually they were on the brink of war.
In the end, Argentine troops didnt occupy the Island and just four months after his election as pontiff, John Paul II accepted to mediate. It was his first mission in international politics. It was a time the papal nuncio in Argentina Cardinal Pio Laghi lived intensely. This is how he remembered the conflict a few months before his death.

It was John Paul II, in the last hour, that he spoke to them, to those in power, Pinochet on one side and military junta on the other side, he spoke so strongly and he said, wait I come, and he sent immediately a cardinal to see whether they could find a way.
The Pope appointed Cardinal Samoré mediator and sent him to the area. He was an effective mediator, in just two weeks the foreign ministers of Chile and Argentina signed the Act of Montevideo, which formally requested mediation from the Vatican and renounced the use of force.
The talks lasted for over 5 years. And concluded on November 29th 1984, 25 years ago. On that day, the heads of state of Chile and Argentina signed a Treaty of Peace and Friendship at the Vatican.
The islands on the northern channel were awarded to Argentina and the islands on the southern half, to Chile. Moreover, both countries could sail through the area although the marine territory belongs to Argentina.

Through the good work of the cardinal and through the great credit John Paul II had, they avoided the war and they were able in the end to make peace.
Nevertheless, the Popes mediator didnt get to witness the signing of the treaty because he died some months earlier. In his honor, Chile and Argentina named one of its largest borders with the name International Pass Cardenal Samore.

The Beagle Channel is about 240 kilometres (130 nmi; 150 mi) long and is about 5 kilometres (3 nmi; 3 mi) wide at its narrowest point. It extends from Nueva Island in the east to Darwin Sound and Cook Bay in the west. Some 50 kilometres (27 nmi; 31 mi) from its western end it divides into two branches, north and south of Gordon Island. The southwest branch, between Hoste Island and Gordon Island, enters Cook Bay, a bay of the Pacific Ocean. The northwest branch, between Gordon Island and Isla Grande, enters Darwin Sound, which connects to the Pacific Ocean by the O'Brien Channel and the Ballenero Channel. The biggest settlement on the channel is Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of the world. The ship continued the survey in the second voyage of the Beagle under the command of captain FitzRoy who took Charles Darwin along as a self-funding supernumerary, giving him opportunities as an amateur naturalist. Darwin had his first sight of glaciers when they reached the channel on 29 January 1833, and wrote in his field notebook "It is scarcely possible to imagine anything more beautiful than the beryl-like blue of these glaciers, and especially as contrasted with the dead white of the upper expanse of snow". Argentine air forces in the Falklands War
This article describes the composition and actions of the Argentine air forces in the Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas). For an overview of the air forces of the United Kingdom, see British air services in the Falklands War.
As Argentina triggered the war it would be reasonable to think they were prepared, and had a plan on how to defend the islands. The military dictatorship that governed the country at the time regarded the seizure of the Falklands as a political act to obtain a diplomatic bargaining position, and not as an act of war. Consequently they were taken by surprise when the United Kingdom responded with a large-scale mobilization, and a task force to retake the islands.
The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina; FAA) had never considered the possibility of waging a long-range naval air campaign against a major NATO power. It was not trained or equipped for such a mission. The FAA had only two tanker aircraft to serve the whole air force and navy, and its fighter-bomber Mirage IIIs and IAI Daggers were not equipped for aerial refuelling. The FAA's training, tactics and equipment were focused on a possible war against Chile, resulting from disputes such as the Beagle conflict.
The option to attack Chile[ was a cause of great concern to the Argentina military during the war. The Chilean armed forces had deployed a significant force to Chile's common border with Argentina, and the FAA was forced to reinstate their retired F-86 Sabres to bolster Argentina's air defences. In Argentina's favour, Peru immediately offered its support to the Argentine cause, with the Peruvian Air Force even offering to fly combat missions. This was politely declined by the Argentine government. As the war progressed, Peru and Venezuela sent critical aircraft spare parts to Argentina, urgently needed by the FAA and the Brazilian Air Force leased two EMB111 Bandeirantes maritime patrol aircraft to the Argentine Navy.Finally on June 4, ten Peruvian Mirage 5 with AS-30 missiles arrived to Tandil but the war ended before they could be used.Israel Aircraft Industries technicians that were in the country under the 1979 IAI Daggers contract continued their work during the conflict.

The Beagle conflict was a border dispute between Chile and Argentina over the possession of Picton, Lennox and Nueva islands and the scope of the maritime jurisdiction associated with those islands that brought the countries to the brink of war in 1978.
The islands are strategically located off the south edge of Tierra del Fuego and at the east end of the Beagle Channel. The Beagle channel, the Straits of Magellan and the Drake Passage are the only three waterways between the Pacific Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean in the southern hemisphere.
After refusing to abide by a binding international award giving the islands to Chile, the Argentine junta pushed the controversy to the brink of war in 1978 in order to produce a maritime boundary consistent with Argentine claims.
The Beagle conflict is seen as the main reason for Chilean support to the United Kingdom during the Falklands War of 1982.
The conflict began in 1904 with the first official Argentine claims over the islands that have always been under Chilean control. The conflict passed through several status: since 1881 Chilean islands, since 1904 disputed islands, direct negotiations, submitted to a binding international tribunal, direct negotiations again, brinkmanship.

Chile and Argentina were at odds over the Islands of the Beagle Channel since the late 19th century. Its a territory between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. They turned to mediators such as the Hague Tribunal, the United States Attorney General and the Queen of England. However, none of them managed to bring them in line. Then just hours before the Christmas of 1978, Argentina moved its troops and everything pointed that war was inevitable. Actually they were on the brink of war. In the end, Argentine troops didnt occupy the Island and just four months after his election as pontiff, John Paul II accepted to mediate. It was his first mission in international politics. It was a time the papal nuncio in Argentina Cardinal Pio Laghi lived intensely. This is how he remembered the conflict a few months before his death. Card. Pío Laghi Ex-nuncio in Argentina It was John Paul II, in the last hour, that he spoke to them, to those in power, Pinochet on one side and military junta on the other side, he spoke so strongly and he said, wait I come, and he sent immediately a cardinal to see whether they could find a way. The Pope appointed Cardinal Samoré mediator and sent him to the area. He was an effective mediator, in just two weeks the foreign ministers of Chile and Argentina signed the Act of Montevideo, which formally requested mediation from the Vatican and renounced the use of force. The talks lasted for over 5 years. And concluded on November 29th 1984, 25 years ago. On that day, the heads of state of Chile and Argentina signed a Treaty of Peace and Friendship at the Vatican. The islands on the northern channel were awarded to Argentina and the islands on the southern half, to Chile. Moreover, both countries could sail through the area although the marine territory belongs to Argentina. Card. Pío Laghi Ex-nuncio in Argentina Through the good work of the cardinal and through the great credit John Paul II had, they avoided the war and they were able in the end to make peace. Nevertheless, the Popes mediator didnt get to witness the signing of the treaty because he died some months earlier. In his honor, Chile and Argentina named one of its largest borders with the name International Pass Cardenal Samore. Some 50 kilometres (27 nmi; 31 mi) from its western end it divides into two branches, north and south of Gordon Island. The southwest branch, between Hoste Island and Gordon Island, enters Cook Bay, a bay of the Pacific Ocean. The northwest branch, between Gordon Island and Isla Grande, enters Darwin Sound, which connects to the Pacific Ocean by the O'Brien Channel and the Ballenero Channel. The biggest settlement on the channel is Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of the world. Although it is navigable by large ships, there are safer waters to the south (Drake Passage) and to the north (Strait of Magellan). During that expedition, under the overall command of the Australian Commander Phillip Parker King, the Beagle's captain Pringle Stokes committed suicide and was replaced by captain Robert FitzRoy. The ship continued the survey in the second voyage of the Beagle under the command of captain FitzRoy who took Charles Darwin along as a self-funding supernumerary, giving him opportunities as an amateur naturalist. Darwin had his first sight of glaciers when they reached the channel on 29 January 1833, and wrote in his field notebook "It is scarcely possible to imagine anything more beautiful than the beryl-like blue of these glaciers, and especially as contrasted with the dead white of the upper expanse of snow". Several small islands (Picton, Lennox and Nueva) up to the Cape Horn were the subject of the long-running Beagle conflict between Chile and Argentina; by the terms of a Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina they are now part of Chile. Argentine air forces in the Falklands War This article describes the composition and actions of the Argentine air forces in the Falklands War (Spanish: Guerra de las Malvinas). As Argentina triggered the war it would be reasonable to think they were prepared, and had a plan on how to defend the islands. The military dictatorship that governed the country at the time regarded the seizure of the Falklands as a political act to obtain a diplomatic bargaining position, and not as an act of war. Consequently they were taken by surprise when the United Kingdom responded with a large-scale mobilization, and a task force to retake the islands. The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina; FAA) had never considered the possibility of waging a long-range naval air campaign against a major NATO power. It was not trained or equipped for such a mission. The FAA had only two tanker aircraft to serve the whole air force and navy, and its fighter-bomber Mirage IIIs and IAI Daggers were not equipped for aerial refuelling. The FAA's training, tactics and equipment were focused on a possible war against Chile, resulting from disputes such as the Beagle conflict. The option to attack Chile[ was a cause of great concern to the Argentina military during the war. The Chilean armed forces had deployed a significant force to Chile's common border with Argentina, and the FAA was forced to reinstate their retired F-86 Sabres to bolster Argentina's air defences. In Argentina's favour, Peru immediately offered its support to the Argentine cause, with the Peruvian Air Force even offering to fly combat missions. This was politely declined by the Argentine government. As the war progressed, Peru and Venezuela sent critical aircraft spare parts to Argentina, urgently needed by the FAA and the Brazilian Air Force leased two EMB111 Bandeirantes maritime patrol aircraft to the Argentine Navy.Finally on June 4, ten Peruvian Mirage 5 with AS-30 missiles arrived to Tandil but the war ended before they could be used.Israel Aircraft Industries technicians that were in the country under the 1979 IAI Daggers contract continued their work during the conflict. -

The Carretera Austral (CH-7), formerly known as Carretera General Augusto Pinochet,[1][2] is the name given to Chile's Route 7. The highway runs about 1,240 kilometers (770 mi) from Puerto Montt to Villa O'Higgins through rural Patagonia.[3] Carretera Austral provides road access to Chile's Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region and southern part of Los Lagos Region. These areas are sparsely populated and despite its length, Carretera Austral provides access to only about 100,000 people. South of the highway's start in Puerto Montt, Coyhaique (population 44,850[4]) is the largest city along it. Construction of the highway was commenced in 1976 under the de facto presidency of Augusto Pinochet in order to connect a number of remote communities. Before that, in the 1950s and 1970s, there had been unsuccessful attempts to build access roads in the region.[5] It is among the most ambitious infrastructure projects developed in Chile during the 20th century. Carretera Austral has a strategic meaning due to the difficult access by land to a significant portion of Chile's southern territory. This area is characterized by thick forests, fjords, glaciers, canals and steep mountains. Access by sea and air is also a complex task due to extreme winter weather conditions. For decades, most of the land transportation had to cross the border to Argentina in order to reach again Chile's Patagonia. These difficulties were deepened during the 1970s due to the Beagle Conflict crisis. In order to strengthen the Chilean presence in these isolated territories and ensure the land connection to the rest of the country, the government planned the construction of this road, which was executed by the Chilean Army's Engineering Command. More than 10,000 soldiers worked in its construction. Many of them lost their lives during this effort. The highway opened to traffic in 1988, and by 1996 was completed to Puerto Yungay. The last 100 kilometers (62 mi) to Villa O'Higgins were opened in 2000. In 2003, a branch road to Caleta Tortel was finished.[6]

Una vez desconocida la validez del Laudo Arbitral, el gobierno militar argentino movilizó todo su poderío militar para cambiar lo establecido por el tribunal. Para ello planificó bajo el nombre de Operación Soberanía una acción militar contra Chile, con el fin de ocupar las islas que el laudo arbitral de 1977 le había otorgado a Chile, e invadir su territorio continental si fuera necesario. Chile and Argentina were at odds over the Islands of the Beagle Channel since the late 19th century. Its a territory between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans.
They turned to mediators such as the Hague Tribunal, the United States Attorney General and the Queen of England. However, none of them managed to bring them in line.
Then just hours before the Christmas of 1978, Argentina moved its troops and everything pointed that war was inevitable.

Both countries had the logic of war behind them. They were both militarised, they were both sending troops to the borders. Actually they were on the brink of war.
In the end, Argentine troops didnt occupy the Island and just four months after his election as pontiff, John Paul II accepted to mediate. It was his first mission in international politics. It was a time the papal nuncio in Argentina Cardinal Pio Laghi lived intensely. This is how he remembered the conflict a few months before his death.

It was John Paul II, in the last hour, that he spoke to them, to those in power, Pinochet on one side and military junta on the other side, he spoke so strongly and he said, wait I come, and he sent immediately a cardinal to see whether they could find a way.
The Pope appointed Cardinal Samoré mediator and sent him to the area. He was an effective mediator, in just two weeks the foreign ministers of Chile and Argentina signed the Act of Montevideo, which formally requested mediation from the Vatican and renounced the use of force.
The talks lasted for over 5 years. And concluded on November 29th 1984, 25 years ago. On that day, the heads of state of Chile and Argentina signed a Treaty of Peace and Friendship at the Vatican.
The islands on the northern channel were awarded to Argentina and the islands on the southern half, to Chile. Moreover, both countries could sail through the area although the marine territory belongs to Argentina.

Through the good work of the cardinal and through the great credit John Paul II had, they avoided the war and they were able in the end to make peace.
Nevertheless, the Popes mediator didnt get to witness the signing of the treaty because he died some months earlier. In his honor, Chile and Argentina named one of its largest borders with the name International Pass Cardenal Samore.

Beagle Channel is a strait in the archipelago island chain of Tierra del Fuego on the extreme southern tip of South America partly in Chile and partly in Argentina. The channel separates the larger main island of Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego from various smaller islands including the islands of Picton, Lennox and Nueva; Navarino; Hoste; Londonderry; and Stewart. The channel's eastern area forms part of the border between Chile and Argentina and the western area is entirely within Chile. The Beagle Channel, the Straits of Magellan to the north, and the open ocean Drake Passage to the south are the three navigable passages around South America between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. The Beagle Channel and the Straits of Magellan are both very narrow passages which severely limit the size and types of ships that can safely use them, hence, most commercial shipping is done through the Drake Passage. The Beagle Channel is about 240 kilometres (130 nmi; 150 mi) long and is about 5 kilometres (3 nmi; 3 mi) wide at its narrowest point. It extends from Nueva Island in the east to Darwin Sound and Cook Bay in the west. Some 50 kilometres (27 nmi; 31 mi) from its western end it divides into two branches, north and south of Gordon Island. The southwest branch, between Hoste Island and Gordon Island, enters Cook Bay, a bay of the Pacific Ocean. The northwest branch, between Gordon Island and Isla Grande, enters Darwin Sound, which connects to the Pacific Ocean by the O'Brien Channel and the Ballenero Channel. The biggest settlement on the channel is Ushuaia in Argentina followed by Puerto Williams in Chile, two of the southernmost settlements of the world. Although it is navigable by large ships, there are safer waters to the south (Drake Passage) and to the north (Strait of Magellan). Under the Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina, ships of other nations navigate with a Chilean pilot between the Strait of Magellan and Ushuaia through the Magdalena Channel and the Cockburn Channel to the Pacific Ocean, then by the Ballenero Channel, the O'Brien Channel and the northwest branch of the Beagle Channel. The Beagle Channel develops between several islands; to the north lies Argentine-Chilean Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, to the south Hoste, Navarino, and Picton and Nueva, which were claimed by Argentina until 1984. The latter two lie at the bi-national eastern entrance to the channel while the western entrance is wholly inside Chile. The western entrance of Beagle Channel is divided by Gordon Island into two channels. Some minor islands exist inside the channel among them Snipe Islet and Gable Island. Except for eastern Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego and Gable Island all islands mentioned here belong to Chile. The Yaghan peoples settled the islands along the Murray Channel approximately 10,000 years before present. There are notable archaeological sites indicating such early Yaghan settlement at locations such as Bahia Wulaia on Isla Navarino, site of the Bahia Wulaia Dome Middens. The channel was named after the ship HMS Beagle during its first hydrographic survey of the coasts of the southern part of South America which lasted from 1826 to 1830. During that expedition, under the overall command of the Australian Commander Phillip Parker King, the Beagle's captain Pringle Stokes committed suicide and was replaced by captain Robert FitzRoy. The ship continued the survey in the second voyage of the Beagle under the command of captain FitzRoy who took Charles Darwin along as a self-funding supernumerary, giving him opportunities as an amateur naturalist. Darwin had his first sight of glaciers when they reached the channel on 29 January 1833, and wrote in his field notebook "It is scarcely possible to imagine anything more beautiful than the beryl-like blue of these glaciers, and especially as contrasted with the dead white of the upper expanse of snow". Several small islands (Picton, Lennox and Nueva) up to the Cape Horn were the subject of the long-running Beagle conflict between Chile and Argentina; by the terms of a Treaty of Peace and Friendship of 1984 between Chile and Argentina they are now part of Chile. As Argentina triggered the war it would be reasonable to think they were prepared, and had a plan on how to defend the islands. The military dictatorship that governed the country at the time regarded the seizure of the Falklands as a political act to obtain a diplomatic bargaining position, and not as an act of war. Consequently they were taken by surprise when the United Kingdom responded with a large-scale mobilization, and a task force to retake the islands.
The Argentine Air Force (Fuerza Aérea Argentina; FAA) had never considered the possibility of waging a long-range naval air campaign against a major NATO power. It was not trained or equipped for such a mission. The FAA had only two tanker aircraft to serve the whole air force and navy, and its fighter-bomber Mirage IIIs and IAI Daggers were not equipped for aerial refuelling. The FAA's training, tactics and equipment were focused on a possible war against Chile, resulting from disputes such as the Beagle conflict.
The option to attack Chile[ was a cause of great concern to the Argentina military during the war. The Chilean armed forces had deployed a significant force to Chile's common border with Argentina, and the FAA was forced to reinstate their retired F-86 Sabres to bolster Argentina's air defences. In Argentina's favour, Peru immediately offered its support to the Argentine cause, with the Peruvian Air Force even offering to fly combat missions. This was politely declined by the Argentine government. As the war progressed, Peru and Venezuela sent critical aircraft spare parts to Argentina, urgently needed by the FAA and the Brazilian Air Force leased two EMB111 Bandeirantes maritime patrol aircraft to the Argentine Navy.Finally on June 4, ten Peruvian Mirage 5 with AS-30 missiles arrived to Tandil but the war ended before they could be used.Israel Aircraft Industries technicians that were in the country under the 1979 IAI Daggers contract continued their work during the conflict.

Carretera Austral provides road access to Chile's Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region and southern part of Los Lagos Region. These areas are sparsely populated and despite its length, Carretera Austral provides access to only about 100,000 people. South of the highway's start in Puerto Montt, Coyhaique (population 44,850[4]) is the largest city along it. Construction of the highway was commenced in 1976 under the de facto presidency of Augusto Pinochet in order to connect a number of remote communities. Before that, in the 1950s and 1970s, there had been unsuccessful attempts to build access roads in the region.[5] It is among the most ambitious infrastructure projects developed in Chile during the 20th century.
Carretera Austral has a strategic meaning due to the difficult access by land to a significant portion of Chile's southern territory. This area is characterized by thick forests, fjords, glaciers, canals and steep mountains. Access by sea and air is also a complex task due to extreme winter weather conditions. For decades, most of the land transportation had to cross the border to Argentina in order to reach again Chile's Patagonia. These difficulties were deepened during the 1970s due to the Beagle Conflict crisis. In order to strengthen the Chilean presence in these isolated territories and ensure the land connection to the rest of the country, the government planned the construction of this road, which was executed by the Chilean Army's Engineering Command. More than 10,000 soldiers worked in its construction. Many of them lost their lives during this effort.
The highway opened to traffic in 1988, and by 1996 was completed to Puerto Yungay. The last 100 kilometers (62 mi) to Villa O'Higgins were opened in 2000. In 2003, a branch road to Caleta Tortel was finished.[6]

Unknown to humans, a secret war has been raging between cats and dogs for eons, but a fragile truce has long held the order of the animal kingdom in place. Aprovechándose de la inestabilidad y crisis económica por la cual pasaba Chile, sus países vecinos decidieron aliarse para reconquistar territorios que les pertenecían(según ellos), provocando así la alerta máxima en el país y el ejercito por la temida HV3.
Argentina anulaba por completo el fallo entregado por Inglaterra el año 1977, armándose y preparando un plan de invasión, el llamado "Plan Soberanía".
Pinochet no tuvo ningún problema, fue hasta Mendoza para hablar con Jorge Rafael Videla, en ese momento militar, dictador y presidente de Argentina; No se llego a ningún acuerdo.
Perú y Bolivia con la escusa de recuperar territorios perdidos durante la Guerra del pacifico se aliaron con Argentina.
El día 22 de diciembre de 1978, se esperaba que se encontrasen las flotas de marina de guerra de Argentina y Chile.
La impresión se tuvo a la mañana siguiente al enterarse de que Argentina había decidido no atacar, porque la escuadra se había encontrado con un temporal y los marinos argentinos tenían malestares y vómitos, y también gracias a la mediación del vaticano, que había enviado al cardenal Samore para establecer soluciones diplomáticas entre ambos países.
