It draws you into a waiting crowd, where you can observe some Ghanaian lifestyle. The white building is the slavery-museum of Cape Coast, a former british slave-fortress. ---SPOILER Warning----- Obama did not show in front of the crowd for security reasons. Some said, he was visible for 3 seconds, waving to the crowd. He visited the museum together with his wife, whose ancestors were said to be from Ghana. If you are in Ghana, visit this museum and take a tour. The aftermath of the film follows the tumbling idealization and its inherent ambivalence: In 2011 the Obama-administration joined efforts with the British to combat homophobia in Africa. Both, Cameron and Obama announced to cut back funding if legislation against homosexuals continues or worsens. Obama turned from the celebrated idol of virtually every Ghanaian into "the house slave" of "homosexual imperialism". Ghana still employs homophobic legislation backed by the christian government and contested only by some corageous academics and journalists. Overall it might be far less dangerous to be a homosexual in Ghana than in Russia or Jamaica. Trivia: Note the Ambulance donated by the Islamic Republic of Iran - in a crowd waiting for the US-President. Iran tries to influence Ghana, it donated a hospital in Accra and many small projects like wells in the northern hinterland. Note the kings in the "coffins". As with homophobia, "Change we can believe in" was not taken THAT literal. Ghadaffi paid Ghanaian chiefs and Kings to elect him as the "King of Africa". Anyhow, many of those feudal institutions are run by academic modernist individuals and democrats who also want to contribute to their communities. Half of Europe employs monarchies, unlike its former colonial power Great-Britain Ghana is a true democracy today. Note that the people in the crowd are not the same than those in online-comments. Ghanaian Online-comments were largely unanimous in their homophobia and resent against Obamas critique of it, but consider the pluralism and liberalism within Ghanas society. Please note: The low quality of the film material is a result of poor technology. It was not my plan to make a film in Ghana. I conserved the material only because of its ethnographic value. I would be glad to own a Canon Mark III.

Wars, unravelling state structures and an emboldened Islamic State U.S. policies and dilemmas in the Middle East 10 June 2015 Background Influenced by the experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan and in an effort to correct what was perceived as an ”over-focus” on the Middle East by past administrations, President Obama proclaimed a ”pivot” to Asia and the need to ”lead from behind”. Yet, the sudden expansion of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in 2014 once again pushed the US to become militarily involved in the region. From Libya to Syria, Iraq and Yemen, state structures in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region are unravelling and put into question. This has provided ample leeway for armed non-state actors, who are exploiting power vacuums and the lack of legitimate governance structures. While Washington is spearheading Operation Inherent Resolve in a bid to counter IS’s further expansion in the region, many regional allies are calling for an even more assertive US policy. Syria and the ongoing nuclear negotiations with Iran have especially caused unease with regional allies. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in particular are reading it as a sign of a waning American security umbrella under which the monarchies have been protected, and they are calling for more robust security guarantees. At the same time, regional powers are also displaying a willingness to do it alone, as evident from the intervention in Yemen and the new efforts to create an Arab military force. To discuss these challenges and difficult balancing acts, DIIS has invited Jon B.
