From the ancient times island itself of the nature worship was said that applied, and often appeared in the front stage of the history from the importance as the base of strength and the traffic on the seas of the influence of Itsukushima Shrine the last years later in the Heian era. From the middle of Edo era, it prospered as a Japanese outstanding sightseeing spot. Other than a main shrine, 幣殿, a front shrine, 祓殿, a corridor (each national treasure), all the main buildings are appointed to a national treasure or the important cultural property of the country now. Decoration as the gorgeousness is put for "the Heike copied sutra" which Kiyomori dedicated of most as the thing which shows prosperity of Heike to the world, and the thing which is valuable in an art industrial art object, the arms which the royalty, a noble and a military commander, merchants dedicated is done with one of the notable works in Japan history of art. Itsukushima Shrine and the Mt. Misen (I do not show it) primeval forest are registered with a world heritage of the UNESCO in 1996. A part of the shore was registered with Ramsar Convention (2012) on July 3 in 2012 [5]. I attract the many islands beauty of the Seto Inland Sea to see from the highest peak, the Mt. Misen (535 meters) mountaintop of the island and am crowded with people aiming at the first sunrise of a new year in the early morning on New Year's Day every year. Hirobumi Ito who loved this ground praised it highly saying "there is one true value of the three most beautiful views in Japan for a view from the Mt. Misen top", and it was with an opportunity, and paths of general mountain climbing to Mt. Misen were maintained late in the Meiji era. When a regular line was established in (1900) in 1900, the traffic that I depended on a ferry boat for was improved till then, and a worshiper, the tourists to the island increased rapidly. The whole area (including the peripheral sea area) of the island is incorporated into Setonaikai National Park in (1934) in 1934 and becomes the special protection area that the natural park method determines. I am appointed in the special historic spot of the country and the special natural beauty spot in (1952) in 1952, and the primeval forest of Mt. Misen is appointed to the natural monument of the country. The whole island fitted Miyajimacho, Saeki-gun, but merged with Hatsukaichi-shi once in 2005.
