The Italian Americans reveals the unique and distinctive qualities of one immigrant group's experience, and how these qualities, over time, have shaped and challenged America. At the turn of the 20th century, many Italians immigrants came to work, earn money to support their families, and eventually return home. Nearly half of the first generation Italian immigrants did return to Italy, but for those that made America home, their struggle to maintain a distinct Italian culture was guided by remarkably powerful ideals of family that had always been at the center of their lives. While the power of the Italian family became a source of strength, it also bred suspicion, popularized in popular media as a dark, criminal element. This clash of culture echoed through generations of Italian Americans as they entered positions of political, social, and cultural influence. Through extensive archival materials and interviews with scholars and notable Italian Americans such as Tony Bennett, Nancy Pelosi, Gay Talese and John Turturro, The Italian Americans tells the story of those who played vital roles in helping to shape a unique Italian American identity and to transform American life and culture. Part 3: The Loyal Americans A second generation of Italian Americans begins to enter the labor movement, politics, sports and entertainment. Fiorello LaGuardia becomes mayor of New York City. Joe DiMaggio, the son of a San Francisco fisherman, becomes an American hero. But with the outbreak of World War II, loyalty to America is questioned and Italians are forced to choose between two nations.

The NIAF 2009 Convention and Gala Weekend Held on October 23-24, 2009, the Foundation's 34th Anniversary Convention and Gala honored culinary pioneer and philanthropist Lidia Matticchio Bastianich, Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo Americas Beverages Massimo F. d'Amore, actress Carla Gugino, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano and renowned Italian singer and songwriter Antonello Venditti. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel served as Master of Ceremonies. Held at The Hilton Washington, in Washington, D.C., the weekend also featured a Friday Night musical performance by Venditti, seminars on Italian food and wine, and NIAF's Annual Celebrity Auction. Proceeds from the weekend's activities benefited the Foundation's educational and scholarship programs. [edit] 2009 -- Post-Earthquake Abruzzo Relief Following the April 6, 2009 earthquake that destroyed much of Italy's Abruzzo region, NIAF and the U.S. State Department entered into a public-private partnership to provide a generous American response. While speaking to members of the press during a meeting with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in Rome prior to the G-8 Summit in July 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama recognized the National Italian American Foundation's support of reconstruction efforts in L'Aquila, a city devastated by an earthquake in Abruzzo. [1] Obama specifically noted joint efforts by the NIAF/State Department partnership to raise funds for the University of L'Aquila and its displaced students. "Obviously our hearts were broken by the death and destruction that took place after the earthquake. And I'm very pleased that the United States, like many other countries, will be contributing to help the rebuilding process," Obama said while addressing journalists at the Quirinale Palace on July 8, 2009. "In fact, we have, along with the National Italian American Foundation, already identified projects to help rebuild facilities at the University of L'Aquila and to provide scholarships and summer programs." Through NIAF's fundraising efforts, the partnership helped displaced University of L'Aquila students by working with The University of Miami, Sierra Nevada College, Villanova University and the University of New Mexico to provide new educational opportunities. A total of 103 L'Aquila students applied to be part of this program, which included full tuition, room and board scholarships. S: We are from Delaware, in United States, a little town called, Wilmington, Delaware, which is about an hour of south of Philadelphia, that helps you to get the perspective. T: Wow, that was very detailed, thanks, I’ve never been there, but I wish I could get there… S: Okay. T: So, is it your first time in Italy? S: My very first time in Italy with my family, we came in yesterday morning. T: Oh my God. S: Yes. T: There are so many sights. S: Exactly, it’s overwhelming, just to be here today and try to take in all the beauty. T: Exactly. So, could you tell me some of the differences between your culture and the Italian culture, just a few. S: Yeah, I think, one of the things that hit me on hard is the coffee, we have like one kind, and here you have like five different kinds of coffee, ahh, what else? The food. Even though, we have, what in the United States we will call Italian food, is not really Italian food, we’re finding out. To see a country so big, and have different cultures kind of within that is very different than in the U.S. Obviously, Rome and strong Catholic presence of the Vatican, eh, it’s very interesting, to see all the people who wanna be here, so... We don’t really have history, in the United States something could be two or three hundred years old and it’s a big deal, here it’s two or three thousand years old, and it’s not even that old. So, yeah… T: Was it a big dream for you to get here? S: A big dream? Yes, we have wanted to come, my wife and wanted to wait till our daughters’ are old enough for visiting, yes it’s something we wanted for a very long time. T: I always ask, what would be the message for my subscribers, listeners, students, why is it important to speak English properly? A decapitated head has been found posted on the gate at the entrance to a gas factory in south-eastern France which came under attack from terrorists this morning, security officials said. Police sources said the decapitated head was found at the site along with a flag bearing Islamist inscriptions. Local newspaper Le Dauphine said the head was also covered in Arabic writing ... He said they attacked the factory “using gas canisters”....
