Coverage of the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz from Friday July 17, 2015 this is just a 90 minute taste of the day which and features Tony Succar and his Band in the first 45 minutes and Monty Alexander and The Kingston Express in the last 45 minutes.
The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz is a non-profit organization originally conceived by Paul Brown, noted Hartford jazz bassist and music educator. For 26 years, Paul had produced the Monday Night Jazz Concerts in Bushnell Park, drawing thousands of music lovers to Hartford’s Bushnell Park for picnics and world-class entertainment. That first Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz, in July of 1992, was dedicated to the 25th anniversary of those wonderful summers.
Paul gathered some friends to help plan that first festival, but ultimately turned the Festival over to a Board of Directors comprised of volunteers from the Central Connecticut area, who continued to fulfill his dream of a world-class jazz event in Hartford, while he concentrated on his professional career and the Monday Night Jazz Concerts. Now in its 24th year, this free-of-charge Festival is supported by small and medium-sized charitable gifts and donations from foundations, businesses and corporations as well as City of Hartford and State of Connecticut grants. The Festival is also generously supported by contributions from individual jazz lovers throughout the region.
Tony Succar
Born into a family of talented musicians in Lima, Peru on May 18, 1986, Tony Succar’s very DNA must be imbued with cadence and rhythm. The Succar family moved to Miami, Florida when Tony was just two; at the ripe old age of 13, Tony’s own music career began. He says, “I was privileged to be brought up in a family of musicians: I couldn’t be more grateful.” Succar’s music education began on piano then segued to percussion. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Jazz Performance from Florida International University in 2008 and his Master’s degree in 2010.
Succar has worked with artists Arturo Sandoval, Néstor Torres, Ed Calle, Tito Nieves, La India, Obie Bermudez, Jennifer Peña, and Tito Puente Jr., among others. Growing up in Miami—a multi-cultural “Melting Pot”—molded him into a versatile musician, prompting him to make the most of his prodigious talent.
Monty Alexander
In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere spirit of musical expression. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, Bobby McFerrin, Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among others.
Born on D-Day (June 6, 1944) and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, he took his first piano lessons at age six, although he is largely self-taught. As a teenager, he witnessed concerts by Louis Armstrong and Nat “King” Cole at Kingston’s Carib Theater. These artists had a profound effect on Alexander’s aspirations. He formed Monty and the Cyclones in the late 1950s and also recorded on sessions with the musicians who would catapult Jamaican music to international recognition as The Skatalites (Bob Marley’s first backing band).

Coverage of the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz from Saturday July 18, 2015 this is just a 2 hour taste of the day and features Eric Leone, Ed Fast and Conga Bop, Jackiem Joyner, Maysa, and Nick Colionne
Eric Leone
Eric Leone (a.k.a Eric Leone Pritchett) has virtually grown up surrounded by music. Inspired by his parents, Joseph Pritchett Sr., a self taught musician who also provides technical and logistical support, and Maggie Pritchett who teaches piano and gives spiritual support, he has thrived with his own musical career.
Ed Fast and Conga Bop
As the percussion playing leader of Conga-Bop, the hard-swinging Latin jazz ensemble, Ed Fast has become a celebrated figure in town through his band’s many well-received appearances in Hartford, including its soulful, sizzling sessions at The Firebox Restaurant.
Jakiem Joyner
As a young turk on the contemporary jazz scene, saxophonist Jackiem Joyner is far from complacent and staid in his sound and style. Not afraid to challenge the fan base that took him to No. 1 twice and Top 3 two more times on the Billboard chart, Joyner gets adventurous on his fifth album, “Evolve,” which will be released April 29th by Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Records. It’s his first on which he wrote and produced the entire set, including the first single going to radio in mid-March, “Generation Next,” an up-tempo urban-pop track with vibrant flashes of strings that provide a contrast to Joyner’s gentle melodic sax.
Maysa
Maysa is the kind of singer who takes hold of a song and enraptures her audience, as she delivers lyrics, phrases, melodies and harmonies in a way that only she can. Blessed with an instantly identifiable honey-toned mezzo-soprano and an undeniably brilliant and magnetic stage presence, Maysa’s alluring vocals, candor, humor and purity as an artist make her a rarity in this business. Having collaborated with everyone from Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan to Incognito and Angela Bofill, Maysa can hang with the best. It is no wonder the recipient of Soul Train’s “Soul Approved Underground Singer” was declared ‘WONDERful’ by the iconic Stevie Wonder.
Nick Colionne
Red-hot guitarist and vocalist Nick Colionne continues his blazing success into 2014. BET Jazz has described him as "one of the most exceptional performers to come along in a long time." His newest CD, "INFLUENCES" a musical journey of self re-discovery, offers a palate of moods and flavors born of life experiences, challenges, and the effect of the people past and present who have helped shape and mold his sound, and promises to give fans more of what they expect from the talented Colionne.

In the offices of Richard Northrop, at the Travelers Insurance Company, the first organizational meeting of the Hartford Rotary Club was held on December 6, 1910. The Club was notified on July 24, 1911 that their application for membership in the National Association of Rotary Clubs of America had been approved.
The Club was formed and operated as a men's business club. In 1986 all that changed when the by-laws of the Hartford Rotary Club were amended to admit women as full members. This was revolutionary since the action of the Hartford Rotary members preceded the Supreme Court mandate requiring the admission of women by one year.
Richard Nrothup was elected to serve as our first president for the year 1910 - 1911. Since then we have had 89 presidents. Charles B. Cook was president on our 25th anniversary; Arthur C. Stevens was president on our 50th anniversary and Louis W. Romanos was president on our 75th anniversary.
The Hartford Rotary Club has been involved in the expansion of Rotary within the greater Hartford area with club formations in East Hartford (1928); Wethersfield (1938); Manchester (1940); Simsbury (1946); Glastonbury (1948); West Hartford (1952); Coventry (1956); Newington (1959); South Windsor (1960); East Windsor (1970); Bloomfield (1972); Avon (1973); Farmington (1974); Windsor (1975) and Hartford Sunrise (1988).
Hartford Rotary has been involved in numerous projects that include a call to arms to assist families struck by the famous Winsted flood of 1954; renovation of the Keney Zoo in the mid 1960's; forging a partnership with the J.C. Clark School through a combination of financial and educational resources; volunteers to assist the Hartford Marathon; Hartford Eagles program working with fifth and sixth grade boys to build self awareness; Junior Rotarians to provide high school students the opportunity to network with business leaders; the Polio Plus campaign in which we raised $150,000; financial support to numerous local charities; participation in the Rotary Group Study Exchange, and the establishment of a student exchange program with our sister city in Hertford, England.
In addition there have been 130 Paul Harris Fellows awarded in our club with multiple Paul Harris Fellows awarded to 35 individuals.

Coverage of the Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz from Sunday July 19, 2015 this is just a 1 hour taste of the day and features Kim Scott, Dezron Douglas, and the Airmen of Note.
Kim Scott
Kim (Felder) Scott is one of the most sought after flutists in both the classical and jazz fields. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she has performed across the country and abroad since 2000 in recitals, concerts, and with her flute and harp ensemble, Kimoni Duo, with Monica Hargrave, harp.
Dezron Douglas
Known for his musical versatility, bassist Dezron Douglas is one of the most in demand young bassists in jazz today. Composer, bandleader, sideman and educator, Dezron has established himself as a musician’s musician, respected not only for his talent but also for his dedication to the authenticity of the music.
Airmen of Note
The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Stationed at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling in Washington, D.C., it is one of six musical ensembles that comprise The U.S. Air Force Band. Created in 1950 to continue the tradition of Major Glenn Miller's Army Air Corps dance band, the current band consists of 18 active duty Airmen musicians including one vocalist.
Through the years, the Airmen of Note has presented its own brand of big band jazz as well as more contemporary forms of jazz to audiences via annual tours across the United States, deployments around the world and local performances throughout metropolitan Washington, D.C. For smaller, more intimate venues, the Airmen of Note Combo and various individual musicians perform apart from the full band to support military and civilian ceremonial and diplomatic events.
Their commitment to musical excellence has earned the respect of the foremost jazz artists from around the globe, leading to many collaborative performances and recordings with such luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan and Doc Severinsen. In 1990, the Airmen of Note established the Jazz Heritage Series, featuring the “Note” in concert with legendary icons of jazz. Each year, the series is broadcast to millions over National Public Radio, independent jazz radio stations, satellite radio services and the Internet. In addition, the “Note” produces and delivers recorded music to millions of fans worldwide each year through hundreds of media outlets. One of the group's recent holiday recordings, "Cool Yule," reached #2 on the JazzWeek jazz chart.

David Sanborn
BIOGRAPHY
David Sanborn has released 24 albums, won six Grammy Awards, and has had eight Gold albums and one Platinum album. Having inspired countless other musicians, Dave has worked in many genres which typically blend instrumental pop, R&B; and lately, more and more traditional jazz. He released his first solo album Taking Off in 1975, but has been playing the saxophone since before he was in high school when he was inspired by the great Chicago blues artists near his hometown of St. Louis.
Having contracted polio at the age of three, Dave was introduced to the saxophone as part of his treatment therapy. By the age of 14, he was able to play with legends such as Albert King and Little Milton. Dave went on to study music at Northwestern University before transferring to the University of Iowa where he played and studied with the great saxophonist JR Monterose.
Later traveling to California on the advice of a friend, he joined the Butterfield Blues Band and played Woodstock with Paul Butterfield. Following that, Dave toured with Stevie Wonder and recorded for Wonder’s Talking Book album, played with The Rolling Stones, and toured with David Bowie with whom he recorded the famous solo heard on “Young Americans”. At the same time, Dave was touring and recording with the great Gil Evans, dividing his time between the two. After moving to New York City and studying with George Coleman, Dave started his solo career where he later collaborated with such artists as Paul Simon and James Taylor.
Dave’s solo release of Taking Off in 1975—still considered a classic—further solidified his career. His 1979 release of Hideaway became a popular hit and further propelled Dave’s ascent with the single, “Seduction” being featured in the movie, American Gigolo. Veteran bassist and composer Marcus Miller joined Dave on the 1981 album, Voyeur. The single, “All I Need Is You” won Dave his first Grammy Award for Best R&B; Instrumental Performance. In 1983, Dave released the hit album Backstreet that included Luther Vandross as a featured guest vocalist. Later albums have included guest artists such as Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Charlie Hayden, Wallace Roney, Kenny Barron, Christian McBride, and Eric Clapton.
Moving onto television, Dave hosted the show, Night Music from 1988 to 1990. Produced by Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels, the show featured films of jazz legends like Thelonious Monk, Dave Brubeck and Billie Holiday, as well as banter and memorable music jams by a remarkable list of musicians including Sonny Rollins, Miles Davis, Joe Sample, Pharoah Sanders, and many others.
Additionally, Dave has regularly hosted the "After New Year's Eve" TV special on ABC. During the 1980s and 1990s, Dave hosted a syndicated radio program, The Jazz Show with David Sanborn.
