Boston (pronounced i/ˈbɒstən/) is the capital and largest city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the United States. Boston also served as the historic county seat of Suffolk County until Massachusetts disbanded county government in 1999. The city proper covers 48 square miles (124 km2) with an estimated population of 655,884 in 2014, making it the largest city in New England and the 24th largest city in the United States. The city is the economic and cultural anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.7 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan statistical area in the country. Greater Boston as a commuting region is home to 8.1 million people, making it the sixth-largest combined statistical area in the United States.
One of the oldest cities in the United States, Boston was founded on the Shawmut Peninsula in 1630 by Puritan settlers from England. It was the scene of several key events of the American Revolution, such as the Boston Massacre, the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and the Siege of Boston. Upon American independence from Great Britain, the city continued to be an important port and manufacturing hub, as well as a center for education and culture. Through land reclamation and municipal annexation, Boston has expanded beyond the original peninsula. Its rich history attracts many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone drawing over 20 million visitors per year. Boston's many firsts include the United States' first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), and first subway system (1897).

Travel video about destination Boston in the United States of America. Boston has over half a million inhabitants and is the largest of New England's cities. As its most important commercial and financial centre, the city on the Charles River has always played an historic role and was the cradle of Independence. In the centre of Boston, Copley Square features the Trinity Church, which contrasts with the modern Hancock Tower that dominates the skyline. Park Street Church was where, in 1829, William Garrison gave his first anti-slavery speech. In the adjacent Granary Burial Ground, some of America's most famous sons are buried, such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. Beacon Hill has hardly changed over the past 150 years, an architectural gem with narrow, winding cobbled street...

21 Mar 2013 In Chinese ancestral portraits, it was a common practice for subjects holding titles in the Qing court to be depicted in their official robes. There were nine ranks for civilian officials, each represented by a different bird embroidered on a rank badge sewn at the front of the robe. Wee Boon Teck, the second generation patriarch of the family at 157 Neil Road, was conferred a fourth rank represented by a wild goose on the badge. What does this symbol mean in Asian art and culture? The wild goose or hamsa has been a popular motif in Asia for over 2000 years, featuring in both Hindu and Buddhist art (gazing down at a reclining Vishnu, at Amaravati, on the cross-bars of Buddhist thrones), cave murals and paintings (such as those at Ajanta and Ellora), ancient Indian textiles, a...

Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein's relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse. This video shows the basic timeline of the Boston Marathon Bombings (April 15-19, 2013). During just one week the United States experienced a great turmoil of emotions as trying to pinpoint the reasons why and who. The government, the media, and especially social media were trying to search for answers and all affected each other, similar to Newton's law of motion ("For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction"). Footage & Photos used from: NBC, Boston Globe, RT, AP, MSNBC, Fox News, CNN, NPR, New York TImes, Telegraph, and the people of Twitter. Made for SCADdistrict.com

On April 21, 2014 the world’s focus will return to this great city to watch the 118th Boston Marathon. As usual, runners will take their places at the 26.2-mile mark, while friends, family, and the people of this iconic city line the streets to cheer them on. The memory of last year’s heinous and senseless act will not shy runners or spectators from celebrating this annual sporting event that welcomes participants from all over the world. Yet, we will all stand in remembrance of the beautiful people who lost their lives and those who were gravely injured in the tragedy. In pain we found love. We grieved together and chose friendship over hate. We honor the brave men and women who tirelessly worked in the days after the bombings. This short video is dedicated to the great city of Boston an...
