Alaska (i/əˈlæskə/) is a U.S. state situated in the northwest extremity of the North American continent. Bordering the state to the east are the Canadian territory of Yukon and the Canadian province of British Columbia; to the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas, southern parts of the Arctic Ocean. To the west and south is the Pacific Ocean, with Russia (specifically, Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Kamchatka Krai) farther west across the Bering Strait. Alaska is the largest state in the United States by area, the 3rd least populous and the least densely populated of the 50 United States. Approximately half of Alaska's residents (estimated at 738,432 by the Census Bureau in 2015) live within the Anchorage metropolitan area. Alaska's economy is dominated by the oil, natural gas, and fishing industries, resources which it has in abundance. Tourism and military bases are also a significant part of the economy.
Although it had been occupied for over ten thousand years by indigenous peoples, from the 18th century onward, European powers considered the territory of Alaska ripe for exploitation and trade. The United States purchased Alaska from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for 7.2Â million U.S. dollars at approximately two cents per acre ($4.74/km2). The area went through several administrative changes before becoming organized as a territory on May 11, 1912. It was admitted as the 49th state of the U.S. on January 3, 1959.
Keish (1859 or 1860– July 11, 1916), legally James Mason, best known by his nickname Skookum Jim Mason, was a Canadian native and a member of the Tagish First Nation in what became the Yukon Territory of Canada. He was born close to Bennett Lake on what is now the British Columbia/Yukon border, to a Tahltan woman (which under the conventions of a matrilineal society made him Tahltan.) He lived in Carcross, Yukon, Canada.
In the mid-1880s, he worked as a packer over the Chilkoot Pass carrying supplies for miners, where he earned his Skookum nickname because of his extraordinary strength. Skookum means "strong", "big" and "reliable" in the Chinook Jargon and regional English as used in the Pacific Northwest.
He assisted William Ogilvie in his explorations of the upper Yukon. He also showed members of the expedition the way over the White Pass. Keish is today co-credited with making the gold discovery at Discovery Claim that led to the Klondike Gold Rush, although it was originally attributed solely to George Carmack, his brother-in-law. It is also possible that the discovery was made by Keish's sister Shaaw Tláa (Kate Carmack).
Pokémon GO is an upcoming augmented reality game for mobile phones developed by Niantic, scheduled to be released in 2016 for iOS and Android devices. The game will be released alongside the Pokémon Go Plus, a small wearable device developed by Nintendo, which uses a Bluetooth connection to notify users when a Pokémon is nearby with a LED and a light rumble. The game will allow players to capture, battle, train and trade virtual Pokémon who appear throughout the real world. The game will be free-to-play, although it will support in-app purchases.
The idea for the game was conceived in 2013 by Satoru Iwata of Nintendo and Tsunekazu Ishihara of The Pokémon Company. In 2015, Ishihara dedicated his speech at the game's announcement on September 10 to Iwata, who died two months earlier. Ishihara and his wife had played Ingress. Different Pokémon will live in different areas of the world - for example, water type Pokémon will live near water. There will be events held where players can trade Pokémon to build up their collection. A wristband device called the "Pokémon Go Plus" will ship with the game, to allow a more "heads-up" gaming experience than Ingress, where the player can be alerted to a nearby Pokémon by the Go Plus vibrating, press the button in a coded sequence to capture it and check the app later to find out what they've captured. The decision to create the Go Plus rather than create a smart watch app was to increase uptake among players for whom a smart watch is prohibitively expensive.
The Yukon River is a major watercourse of northwestern North America. The source of the river is located in British Columbia, Canada. The next portion lies in, and gives its name to, Yukon. The lower half of the river lies in the U.S. state of Alaska. The river is 3,190 kilometres (1,980 mi) long and empties into the Bering Sea at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The average flow is 6,430 m³/s (227,000 ft³/s). The total drainage area is 832,700 km² (321,500 mi²), of which 323,800 km² (126,300 mi²) is in Canada. By comparison, the total area is more than 25% larger than Texas or Alberta.
The longest river in Alaska and Yukon, it was one of the principal means of transportation during the 1896–1903 Klondike Gold Rush. A portion of the river in Yukon—"The Thirty Mile" section, from Lake Laberge to the Teslin River—is a national heritage river and a unit of Klondike Gold Rush International Historical Park. Paddle-wheel riverboats continued to ply the river until the 1950s, when the Klondike Highway was completed. After the purchase of Alaska by the United States in 1867, the Alaska Commercial Company acquired the assets of the Russian-American Company and constructed several posts at various locations on the Yukon River.

Fun fact: it's not cold all the time. I was born and raised in Fairbanks, Alaska, which means my non-Alaska-born peers often find this fascinating. (Understandable. It's a pretty dope state.) Caitlin, who's been my close friend since college, once humorously noted how she has heard people ask me this question dozens and dozens of times: "What's it like to live in ALASKA??" So while visiting my homeland of Fairbanks, Alaska last year, my friend Caitlin Cowie and my sister Julie Barsi and I decided to make this video. We thought it'd be a fun way to share both the epic and quirky things we love about "the last frontier." We went to all our favorite hometown spots and even trekked to the nearest hot springs and, of course, to Denali National Park. Keep in mind, this video only touches th...

North To Alaska ~ Johnny Horton The Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush was a frenzy of gold rush immigration to and gold prospecting in the Klondike near Dawson City in the Yukon Territory, Canada, after gold was discovered in the late 19th century. In August 1896, three people led by Skookum Jim Mason (a member of the Tagish nation whose birth name was Keish) headed up the Yukon River from the Carcross area looking for his sister Kate and her husband George Carmack. The party included Skookum Jim, Skookum Jim's cousin known as Dawson Charlie (or sometimes Tagish Charlie) and his nephew Patsy Henderson. After meeting up with George and Kate who were fishing for salmon at the mouth of the Klondike River, they ran into Nova Scotian Robert Henderson who had been mining gold on...

Travel video about destination Denali National Park in Alaska. Denali National Park is located about six hundred and thirty miles from the southern coast of Alaska and is nine thousand six hundred square miles of original Sub-Arctic wilderness. The history of the region began millions of years ago when mighty tectonic plates collided. The force of the collision folded the granite and sedimentary rock together at a huge elevation which subsequently formed the highest mountain in North America, Mount Mckinley. The coniferous forests consist primarily of birch and fir and deciduous trees and shrubs cover the stone-based valleys. An amazing variety of bushes, herbs and flowers turn the landscape into an array of bright colour. On the thin humus above the permafrost soil there’s vegetation ...

It's not everyday you get a phone call saying there is an empty seat in a heli with your name on it, so when Lexi Dupont called up Colter Hinchliffe and I (Leo Ahrens) with that very offer, we didn't even think twice about pulling the trigger. Even if it did mean we only had 24 hours to travel 2000 + miles to Haines, Alaska. This wasn't your typical AK film trip by any means. We cycled our roll from athlete, to guide, to cinematographer in order to document this Alaskan cherry popping experience. Maybe not the preffered method of action but for us it was perfect. For us it was AK // OUR WAY http://dubsatch.com/ak-our-way-teaser/ Big shout out to SEABA Heli Operation for helping make this possible!! http://seaba-heli.com/ Athletes: Leo Ahrens, Colter Hinchliffe, Lexi Dupont Guide: Reg...
Natasha and I in Kaktovik, Alaska, land of the polar bears. A short, cold, windy trip. Robert Thompson, our guide was fantastic. Shot on Super 8 film.
After unprecedented weather patterns in the Spring of 2014 and the tragic death of friend and mountain guide Aaron Karitis, the Stellar Media crew was forced to leave the dependable 'watering hole' of Haines, Alaska. "Canceling the season was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made, but it's always important to follow your instincts." says Director of Photography, Will Wissman. Within 48 hours plans were altered to travel eastward to Iceland where the crew explored new terrain on the Troll Peninsula. Our herding nature led us to new adventures in Chile and the feeding frenzy of powder snow and in Japan. From the mountains to the ocean we continue to search for the right place at the right time. 12 months later Stellar Media is back in Alaska for the 2015 season. The past yea...
First attempt at a trailer for the video of "the long way to Bangkok." I decided to make a few trailers just to give me a chance to practice before I go ahead and make the real thing - and to check all my software and hardware can cope with the HD video content. I'm off to the countryside tomorrow to do some Muay Thai for a couple of weeks so won't have another chance to practice for a little while - but will get to work on some more light hearted trailers! I hope this trailer conveys some of the epic scenes we encountered on our journey to Bangkok. The map is a bit blurred I know...need to find a higher res map so If anyone has one... All video content straight from the camera - always learning new things about video...I already wish I had taken more footage and used a higher contrast ...

Caribou Bones (1995) A documentary by Paul Bonesteel “What is true wilderness? I don’t know if I‘ve ever really been there. But I do know that this trip seems to have a gravity all its own. There is something undefinable that has brought us here, to a river, two hundred miles north of the Arctic Circle, where even the definition of wilderness is insignificant. -Paul Bonesteel, from the film’s narration The story centers on the three Bonesteel’s excursion into the Brooks Range of Alaska, their unexpected separation, and their journey that unfolded through the mountains, tundra and rivers of Alaska's Gates of the Arctic National Park. Caribou Bones is an elaborate "home movie," with Paul utilizing the trip itself and his family's archive of super 8mm footage connect events from the pas...

These rusty guitar strings
They don’t play like they should
The times come for changing
They gave all they could
And you used to hold me
Like I was going off to war
But now no one’s left standing
I can’t fight anymore
So go on without me
Go on your own
I’ll think about you
But I'm not about to
Go on alone
You’re so quick to judge me
And kick when I’m down
You laugh at my music
But you still hang around
Well go on without me
And go on your own
I’ll think about you
But I'm not about to
Go on alone
So gather your records
Gather your pride
And keep your convictions
So warm at your side
Just leave my door open
Cause as you walk out the whole world’s walking in
When I swap out these old strings
And start singing again
So go on without me
Go on your own
I might think about you
But I'm not about to go on alone
I’ll think about you
But I'm not about to
Go on alone
These rusty guitar strings
