The Taliban (Pashto: طالبان), alternative spelling Taleban, (ṭālibān, meaning "students" in Pashto) is an Islamist militant and political group that ruled large parts of Afghanistan and its capital, Kabul, as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan from September 1996 until October 2001. It gained diplomatic recognition from three states: Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. The main leader of the Taliban movement is Mullah Mohammed Omar, and Kandahar is considered the birthplace of the Taliban.
While in power, it enforced its strict interpretation of Sharia law, and leading Muslims have been highly critical of the Taliban's interpretations of Islamic law. The Taliban were condemned internationally for their brutal repression of women. The majority of their leaders were influenced by Deobandi fundamentalism, and many also strictly follow the social and cultural norm called Pashtunwali. The Taliban movement is primarily made up of members belonging to Pashtun tribes, the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan.

Plot
Disheartened when his story about Canadian snipers possibly mutilating corpses in Afghanistan is buried, Luke (Nick Stahl) quits his job but is even more determined to return to Afghanistan to get the real story. With his offbeat buddy, Tom (Nicolas Wright), tagging along, Luke returns to Afghanistan and intends to gather enough evidence to get his old story into print. But he soon finds that the country is an even more dangerous place than when he left. To make matters worse, his old friend and fixer, Mateen (Stephen Lobo) has been hired away by Luke's journalistic nemesis, Imran Sahar (Vik Sahay). Soon the trip for Luke and Tom in Afghanistan turns into a surreal and perilous adventure, a journey into an alternate reality, filtered through a haze of gun smoke.

There are two sides to every family
Major Cavazos: It's gonna take some time.
Tommy Cahill: I'd cut my throat to bring him back.
Sam Cahill: Only the dead have seen the end of war...
Sam Cahill: I have to go. He's my brother.::Grace Cahill: He doesn't deserve you.
Maggie Cahill: Hey! No drinking out of the carton. It's gross.::Tommy Cahill: Shut up. You're gross.
Sam Cahill: I dunno who said "only the dead have seen the end of war". I have seen the end of war. The question is, can I live again?
Sam Cahill: I'm drowning, Tommy.
Tommy Cahill: Your nose is like the lunar eclipse. Come on let me touch it.
Hank Cahill: [Looking around at the kitchen] What have they got here? Pancakes?::Tommy Cahill: There's one on the floor if you want one.
Isabelle Cahill: [Screaming] Why couldn't you just stay dead!
'I'm just a middle-aged, middle-eastern camel herdin' man
I got a, 2 bedroom cave here in North Afghanistan
Things used to be real cool and they got out of hand when they moved in
They call themselves the Taliban
[ooooo yeah the taliban] [taliban baby]
Now I ain't seen my wife's face since they came here
They make her wear a scarf over her head that covers her from ear to ear
She loves the desert and the hot white sand
But man she's just like me, nah she can't stand
The Taliban [ooo taliban baby]
You know someday soon we're both gonna saddle up and it'll be
Ride Camel Ride
My old lady she'll be here with me, smilin right by my side
We should do just fine down in Palestine or maybe Turkmenistan
We'll bid a fair adieu and flip the finger to the Taliban
[oh yeah the taliban] [baby]
Now they attacked New York City cause they thought they could win
Said they would, stand and fight until the very bloody end
Mr Bush got on the phone with Iraq and Iran and said 'Now, you
knuckle-heads you better not be doin any business with the taliban'
[Taliban baby]
So we prayed to Allah with all of our might
And then those big U.S. jets came flyin one night
They dropped little bombs all over our holy land
And man you should have seen em run like rabbits, they ran
[the taliban]
You know someday soon we're both gonna saddle up and it'll be
Ride Camel Ride
My old lady she'll be here with me, smilin right by my side
We should do real fine down around Palestine or maybe Turkmenistan
We'll bid a fair audo and flip a couple fingers to the Taliban
[oh yeah, taliban]
we'll bid a fair adieu and flip a finger to The Taliban [baby]'
