The Amazon River of South America is the world's largest river and the lifeblood of the world's largest ecosystem, spanning two-fifths of an entire continent. It is home to a huge variety of animals and plants that dwell in its lush, evergreen environment. It is the mightiest river in the world by volume, with six times greater total river flow than the next six largest rivers combined, and the most extensive drainage basin in the world. Because of its vast dimensions it is sometimes called The River Sea. Running about 4,000 miles (6,400 kilometers), most sources regard the Amazon as the second longest river in length, compared to Africa's Nile River, though this is a matter of some dispute.
Originally explored in the sixteenth century by Europeans who used the Amazon to traverse the formidable environment, the vast waterway fed by numerous tributaries eventually gave rise to commerce in later years. Utilizing boats and steamers, Europeans, slaves, and indigenous peoples increasingly carried out of the rain forest a rich array of highly sought-after products.
In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region.

The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide.
The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea.
The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point.
The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains.

The Upper Amazon comprises a series of major river systems in Peru that flow north and south into the Marañón River. Among others, these include the following rivers: Morona, Pastaza, Nucuray, Urituyacu, Chambira, Tigre, Nanay, Napo, Huallaga, and Ucayali. Originating in the snow-crested Andes Mountains high above Lake Lauricocha in central Peru, the headstream of the Marañón River rises in the glaciers in what is known as the Nevado de Yarupa. Rushing through waterfalls and gorges in an area of the high jungle called the Pongos, the Marañón River flows about 1,000 miles from west-central to northeast Peru before it combines with the Ucayali River, just below the provincial town of Nauta, to form the mighty Amazon River. The primary tributaries of the Marañón River are, from south to north, the Crisnejas, Chamayo, Urtcubamba, Cenepa, Santiago, Moroña, Pastaza, Huallaga, and Tiger rivers.

Amazon River Cruise: Adventure Travel in Peru Video Transcript:
Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go.
This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool.
Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room.
Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever.
The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those.
That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day.
As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon.
So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on.
Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds.
So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet.
So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon.
I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon.
So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast.
So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut!
Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. And it has only been around since 1974 so it is just over 40 years old.

Pacaya--Samiria National Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Peru with an area of more than 20,000 km², containing a rich eco diversity and being the largest reserve in the country and the second largest in the Amazon region. The reserve is triangular shaped by Marañón and Ucayali River in the South, just before their junction originating the Amazon River. Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Region and to promote the sustainable development of the local towns.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos. The shortest route is Iquitos -- Nauta by highway and then a trip on the river from Nauta to the village, Comunity of 20 de Enero, about three to four hours by boat. To be able to enter, you must request permission from INRENA and pay the corresponding fees. Comprising a large part of the provinces of Loreto, Requena, Ucayali, and Alto Amazonas, it has an area of 2'080.000 hectares making it the largest in the country and in South America. It is also known as the most extensive area of protected floodable forest (várzea) in the Amazon Rainforest. It is bordered by two large rivers: the Marañon in the north and the Ucayali -- Puinahua Canal to the south.
Inside the reserve, there are three river basins: the Pacaya River basin, the Samiria River basin, and the Yanayacu-Pucate River basin. There are also numerous lakes, gorges, canals, and oxbows. It has an annual monthly temperature between 20°C (68°F) and 33°C (91°F) and an annual rain fall of 2000 to 3000 millimeters, which allows for its huge biodiversity: 527 bird species, 102 mammal species (among them the pink dolphin), 69 species of reptiles, 58 species of amphibians, 269 fish species, and 1024 species of wild and cultivated plants. The reserve is a refuge for different endangered species like the charapa turtle (Podocnemis expansa), the spider monkey (Ateles sp.), the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the red macaw (Ara macao), cedar trees (Cederla odorata), and others. Furthermore, there are diverse protection and natural resource management projects like the one aimed at repopulating the taricaya and the charapa river with turtles in the artificial beaches of the reserve. It is truly amazing to watch the final stage of the process, the freeing of the newborns into the rivers, gorges, and lakes of the reserve. The level of involvement of the local population is remarkable. On the edges of Pacaya-Samiria on the banks of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers, more than 42.000 people live grouped in ninety-four communities and another 50.000 inhabit the 109 villages in the buffer zone. Almost all of them make a living from fishing, farming, or hunting and wild fruit and greens picking.

Amazon River Travel - The Amazon River (US /ˈæməzɒn/ or UK /ˈæməzən/; Spanish and Portuguese: Amazonas) in South America is the largest river by discharge of water in the world, averaging a discharge of about 209,000 cubic meters per second (7,381,000 cu ft/s), greater than the next seven largest independent rivers combined. It is also generally regarded as the second longest river in the world, has the largest drainage basin in the world, about 7,050,000 square kilometres (2,720,000 sq mi), and accounts for approximately one-fifth of the world's total river flow. The portion of the river's drainage basin in Brazil alone is larger than any other river's basin. The Amazon enters Brazil with only one-fifth of the flow it finally discharges into the Atlantic, yet already has a greater flow at this point than the discharge of any other river.[3][4]
In its upper stretches, above its confluence with the Rio Negro, the Amazon is called Solimões in Brazil; however, in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador, as well as the rest of the Spanish-speaking world, the river is generally called the Amazon downstream from the confluence of the Marañón and Ucayali rivers in Peru. The Ucayali-Apurímac river system is considered the main source of the Amazon, with its main headstream being the Carhuasanta glacial stream flowing off the Nevado Mismi mountain.

The Urubamba River is one of the primary rivers that feeds the Amazon river and it flows right through the Sacred Valley of Peru. During our Adventures by Disney Peru trip, we enjoyed the opportunity to go whitewater rafting down the Urubamba River.
With class 2 and 3 rapids, this section of the Urubamba offers a great mix of float time to enjoy the spectacular views and Incan ruins, as well as some exciting rapids to traverse along the way! As you can see in the video, rafting down the Urubamba provides some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. In addition to that, you see several Incan terraces and buildings that have been in existence for hundreds of years!
About 2/3 of the way through the trip, we pulled the boats to the side of the river for our guides to analyze one particular section of rapids. This section changes daily based on natural water flow and our guides felt it was just too dangerous to traverse. So, we got out and walked while our guides safely moved the boats through the rapids.
After about 2 hours of floating and rafting, in typical Adventures by Disney style, you walk up the river bank and find several tents for changing into dry clothes, snacks to curb your hunger, coca tea and coffee, and lots of chatting about your whitewater rafting adventure in Peru! During all of this, our guides pulled the boats up the shore and broke them down.

The Urubamba River or Willkamayu (Quechua for "sacred river") is a river in Peru. Upstream it is called by its Aymaraname Willkanuta ("house of the sun", hispanicized Vilcanota). Within the La Convención Province the naming changes to Urubamba. A partially navigable headwater of the Amazon River, it rises in the Andes to the southeast ofCuzco. It originates in the mountain Khunurana in the Puno Region, Melgar Province, near the La Raya pass. It flows north-north-west for 724 kilometers before coalescing with the Tambo River to form the Ucayali River.
John Walter Gregory, the British geologist, drowned in the river on June 2, 1932 while on a geological expedition to the Andes.
The Urubamba is divided into Upper Urubamba and Lower Urubamba, the dividing feature being the Pongo de Mainique, an infamous whitewater canyon.

Iquitos - Perù Travel - Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest, with a population of 370,962. It is the capital of Loreto Region and Maynas Province.
Located on the Amazon River, it is only 106 m (348 ft) above sea level, although it is more than 3,000 km (1,864 mi) from the mouth of the Amazon at Belém (Brazil) on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated 125 km (78 mi) downstream of the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, the two main headwaters of the Amazon River. Iquitos has long been a major port in the Amazon Basin. It is surrounded by three rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya, and the Amazon.
The city can be reached only by airplane or boat, with the exception of a road to Nauta, a small town roughly 100 km (62 mi) south. Ocean vessels of 3,000 tons or 9,000 tons[1] and 5.5 metres (18 ft) draft can reach Iquitos from the Atlantic ocean, 3600 km away.
Most travel within the city is via bus, motorcycle, or auto rickshaw (mototaxi, motocarro or motokar). Transportation to nearby towns often requires a river trip via peque-peque, a small public motorized boat.
The climate is hot and humid, with an average relative humidity of 85%. The wet season lasts from around November to May, with the river reaching its highest point in May. The river is at its lowest in October.European-Peruvians established Iquitos as a Jesuit mission to the indigenous peoples in the 1750s. In 1864 it started to grow when the settlers created the Loreto Region and made Iquitos its capital. It is the seat of a Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate.[2]
Iquitos was known for its rubber industry through the rubber boom of the first decade of the 20th century; it attracted thousands of immigrants from around the world, mostly young, single men who hoped to make their fortunes in rubber. The rise of the automobile and related industries had dramatically increased the worldwide demand for rubber. Some men became merchants and bankers, and made their fortunes that way. Many of the European men married indigenous women and stayed in Peru the rest of their lives, founding ethnically mixed families. The immigrants brought European clothing styles, music and other cultural elements to Iquitos.
Among the unique communities formed by the 19th-century rubber boom immigration was one of Sephardic Jews from Morocco. Many of the men married Peruvian women and made families in Iquitos. They established a synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery. By the end of the 20th century, four or five generations later, most descendants were no longer practicing Jews. In the 1990s, a descendant of a Jewish settler undertook serious study of the religion and began to revive Judaism among his family, friends, and other Sephardim descendants. After years of study, with the help of a sympathetic Conservative rabbi in Lima and another from Brooklyn, New York, eventually a few hundred people learned and practiced and converted. (Conversion was necessary as their mothers were not Jewish.) Many of the converts emigrated to Israel under its right of return policy.[3]
The wealthiest Europeans built great mansions in the late 19th century, some of which survive. Casa de Fierro (Spanish for the Iron House) was designed by Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower. After rubber seeds were smuggled out of the country and began to be cultivated in quantity elsewhere, the Peruvian boom came to an end. The city is still an important trading port in the Amazon basin.

Travel VideoThe busy port of Pucallpa has a distinctly less jungle-like appearance than other Amazonian towns.
Although this is an important distribution center for goods along the broad, brown Río Ucayali, which sweeps past the city en route to join the Río Amazonas, the rainforest feels far away. After all those miles of tropical travel to get here, Pucallpa seems underwhelming and bland, and hasty modern development in the center barely disguises the shantytown simplicity a few blocks further out. Still, its a starting point for a spectacular river adventure north to Iquitos and, if time and inclination allow, on to Brazil and the Atlantic.

The Ucayali was first called San Miguel, then Ucayali, Ucayare, Poro, Apu-Poro, Cocama and Rio de Cuzco. Peru has fitted out many costly and ably-conducted expeditions to explore it. One of them (1867) claimed to have reached within 380 km (240 mi) of Lima, and the little steamer "Napo" forced its way up the violent currents for 124 km (77 mi) above the junction with the Pachitea River as far as the Tambo River, 1,240 km (770 mi) from the confluence of the Ucayali with the Amazon. The "Napo" then succeeded in ascending the Urubamba branch of the Ucayali 56 km (35 mi) above its union with the Tambo, to a point 320 km (200 mi) north of Cuzco.

Originally explored in the sixteenth century by Europeans who used the Amazon to traverse the formidable environment, the vast waterway fed by numerous tributaries eventually gave rise to commerce in later years. Utilizing boats and steamers, Europeans, slaves, and indigenous peoples increasingly carried out of the rain forest a rich array of highly sought-after products. In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region. The vast Amazon ================= The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide. The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea. The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point. The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains. Source and upper Amazon ========================= The Upper Amazon comprises a series of major river systems in Peru that flow north and south into the Marañón River. Among others, these include the following rivers: Morona, Pastaza, Nucuray, Urituyacu, Chambira, Tigre, Nanay, Napo, Huallaga, and Ucayali. Originating in the snow-crested Andes Mountains high above Lake Lauricocha in central Peru, the headstream of the Marañón River rises in the glaciers in what is known as the Nevado de Yarupa. Rushing through waterfalls and gorges in an area of the high jungle called the Pongos, the Marañón River flows about 1,000 miles from west-central to northeast Peru before it combines with the Ucayali River, just below the provincial town of Nauta, to form the mighty Amazon River. The primary tributaries of the Marañón River are, from south to north, the Crisnejas, Chamayo, Urtcubamba, Cenepa, Santiago, Moroña, Pastaza, Huallaga, and Tiger rivers. -

This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go. This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool. Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room. Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever. The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those. That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day. As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon. So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on. Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds. So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet. So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon. I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon. So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast. So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut! Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. The reserve is triangular shaped by Marañón and Ucayali River in the South, just before their junction originating the Amazon River. Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Region and to promote the sustainable development of the local towns. Pacaya Samiria National Reserve 183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos. The shortest route is Iquitos -- Nauta by highway and then a trip on the river from Nauta to the village, Comunity of 20 de Enero, about three to four hours by boat. To be able to enter, you must request permission from INRENA and pay the corresponding fees. Comprising a large part of the provinces of Loreto, Requena, Ucayali, and Alto Amazonas, it has an area of 2'080.000 hectares making it the largest in the country and in South America. It is also known as the most extensive area of protected floodable forest (várzea) in the Amazon Rainforest. It is bordered by two large rivers: the Marañon in the north and the Ucayali -- Puinahua Canal to the south. Inside the reserve, there are three river basins: the Pacaya River basin, the Samiria River basin, and the Yanayacu-Pucate River basin. There are also numerous lakes, gorges, canals, and oxbows. It has an annual monthly temperature between 20°C (68°F) and 33°C (91°F) and an annual rain fall of 2000 to 3000 millimeters, which allows for its huge biodiversity: 527 bird species, 102 mammal species (among them the pink dolphin), 69 species of reptiles, 58 species of amphibians, 269 fish species, and 1024 species of wild and cultivated plants. The reserve is a refuge for different endangered species like the charapa turtle (Podocnemis expansa), the spider monkey (Ateles sp.), the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the red macaw (Ara macao), cedar trees (Cederla odorata), and others. Furthermore, there are diverse protection and natural resource management projects like the one aimed at repopulating the taricaya and the charapa river with turtles in the artificial beaches of the reserve. It is truly amazing to watch the final stage of the process, the freeing of the newborns into the rivers, gorges, and lakes of the reserve. The level of involvement of the local population is remarkable. On the edges of Pacaya-Samiria on the banks of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers, more than 42.000 people live grouped in ninety-four communities and another 50.000 inhabit the 109 villages in the buffer zone. The Urubamba River is one of the primary rivers that feeds the Amazon river and it flows right through the Sacred Valley of Peru. During our Adventures by Disney Peru trip, we enjoyed the opportunity to go whitewater rafting down the Urubamba River. With class 2 and 3 rapids, this section of the Urubamba offers a great mix of float time to enjoy the spectacular views and Incan ruins, as well as some exciting rapids to traverse along the way! As you can see in the video, rafting down the Urubamba provides some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. In addition to that, you see several Incan terraces and buildings that have been in existence for hundreds of years! About 2/3 of the way through the trip, we pulled the boats to the side of the river for our guides to analyze one particular section of rapids. This section changes daily based on natural water flow and our guides felt it was just too dangerous to traverse. So, we got out and walked while our guides safely moved the boats through the rapids. After about 2 hours of floating and rafting, in typical Adventures by Disney style, you walk up the river bank and find several tents for changing into dry clothes, snacks to curb your hunger, coca tea and coffee, and lots of chatting about your whitewater rafting adventure in Peru! Iquitos - Perù Travel - Iquitos is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest, with a population of 370,962. It is the capital of Loreto Region and Maynas Province. Located on the Amazon River, it is only 106 m (348 ft) above sea level, although it is more than 3,000 km (1,864 mi) from the mouth of the Amazon at Belém (Brazil) on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated 125 km (78 mi) downstream of the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, the two main headwaters of the Amazon River. Iquitos has long been a major port in the Amazon Basin. It is surrounded by three rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya, and the Amazon. The city can be reached only by airplane or boat, with the exception of a road to Nauta, a small town roughly 100 km (62 mi) south. Ocean vessels of 3,000 tons or 9,000 tons[1] and 5.5 metres (18 ft) draft can reach Iquitos from the Atlantic ocean, 3600 km away. Most travel within the city is via bus, motorcycle, or auto rickshaw (mototaxi, motocarro or motokar). Transportation to nearby towns often requires a river trip via peque-peque, a small public motorized boat. The climate is hot and humid, with an average relative humidity of 85%. The wet season lasts from around November to May, with the river reaching its highest point in May. The river is at its lowest in October.European-Peruvians established Iquitos as a Jesuit mission to the indigenous peoples in the 1750s. In 1864 it started to grow when the settlers created the Loreto Region and made Iquitos its capital. It is the seat of a Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate.[2] Iquitos was known for its rubber industry through the rubber boom of the first decade of the 20th century; it attracted thousands of immigrants from around the world, mostly young, single men who hoped to make their fortunes in rubber. The rise of the automobile and related industries had dramatically increased the worldwide demand for rubber. Some men became merchants and bankers, and made their fortunes that way. Many of the European men married indigenous women and stayed in Peru the rest of their lives, founding ethnically mixed families. The immigrants brought European clothing styles, music and other cultural elements to Iquitos. Among the unique communities formed by the 19th-century rubber boom immigration was one of Sephardic Jews from Morocco. Many of the men married Peruvian women and made families in Iquitos. They established a synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery. By the end of the 20th century, four or five generations later, most descendants were no longer practicing Jews. In the 1990s, a descendant of a Jewish settler undertook serious study of the religion and began to revive Judaism among his family, friends, and other Sephardim descendants. After years of study, with the help of a sympathetic Conservative rabbi in Lima and another from Brooklyn, New York, eventually a few hundred people learned and practiced and converted. (Conversion was necessary as their mothers were not Jewish.) Many of the converts emigrated to Israel under its right of return policy.[3] The wealthiest Europeans built great mansions in the late 19th century, some of which survive. Casa de Fierro (Spanish for the Iron House) was designed by Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower. After rubber seeds were smuggled out of the country and began to be cultivated in quantity elsewhere, the Peruvian boom came to an end. Although this is an important distribution center for goods along the broad, brown Río Ucayali, which sweeps past the city en route to join the Río Amazonas, the rainforest feels far away. After all those miles of tropical travel to get here, Pucallpa seems underwhelming and bland, and hasty modern development in the center barely disguises the shantytown simplicity a few blocks further out. Utilizing boats and steamers, Europeans, slaves, and indigenous peoples increasingly carried out of the rain forest a rich array of highly sought-after products.
In recent years, a highway has made further inroads into the region, while Brazil has sought to keep the Amazon basin free from foreign exploitation. However today, the Amazon is ecologically endangered from reckless deforestation and a lack of public understanding of the importance of this remote region.

The area covered by the Amazon River and its tributaries more than triples between the dry season and wet season over the course of a year. In an average dry season, 110,000 square kilometers of land are water-covered, while in the wet season the flooded area of the Amazon basin rises to 350,000 square kilometers. At its widest point the Amazon River can be 6.8 miles (11 kilometers) wide during the dry season, but during the rainy season when the Amazon River floods the surrounding plains it can be up to 24.8 miles (40 kilometers) wide.
The quantity of freshwater released by the Amazon into the Atlantic Ocean is enormous: up to 300,000 square meters per second in the rainy season. The Amazon is responsible for one-fifth of the total volume of freshwater entering the oceans worldwide. Offshore of the mouth of the Amazon, potable water can be drawn from the ocean while still out of sight of the coastline, and the salinity of the ocean is notably lower a hundred miles out to sea.
The Amazon estuary is over 202 miles (325 kilometers) wide. The main river (which is between approximately one and six miles wide) is navigable for large ocean steamers to Manaus, Brazil, more than 900 miles (1,500 kilometers) upriver from the mouth. Smaller ocean vessels of 3,000 tons can reach as far as Iquitos, Peru, 2,250 miles (3,600 kilometers) from the sea. Smaller riverboats can reach 486 miles (780 kilometers) higher as far as Achual Point. Beyond that, small boats frequently ascend to the Pongo de Manseriche, just above Achual Point.
The Amazon drains an area of some 2,722,000 square miles, or nearly 40 percent of South America. It gathers its waters from 5 degrees north latitude to 20 degrees south latitude. Its most remote sources are found on the inter-Andean plateau, just a short distance from the Pacific Ocean; and, after coursing through the interior of Peru and across Brazil, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the equator. The Amazon has changed its drainage several times, from westward in the early Cenozoic period to its present eastward locomotion following the uplift of the Andes Mountains.

By day we did boat tours to spot wildlife (including macaws, monkeys, sloths and pink dolphins), hike in the Amazon rainforest doing a canopy walk, fish for piranhas, kayak down the river and visit remote local villages.

Hello from the shores of the Amazon river. This is a pretty cool place to be wouldn't you say? Yeah, this is a bucketlist item for us definitely. So we are currently cruising down the Amazon with Rainforest Cruises. We're going to be spending four days and three nights aboard the Delfin number one. Yeah, and it is a very luxurious boat. We're doing this in style. It is awesome. We're going to give you a tour of the boat and we'd also like to show you some of the really cool excursions that we're going to be doing over these next three to four days. So come along. Let's go.
This feels like yet another episode of MTV cribs. But come on in. We are staying in the Anaconda suite. Pretty cool. No anaconda sighted so far. But basically this is our little terrace. We have a nice balcony with views of the Amazon river. And yeah we can just hang out here, have drinks, read a book, it is pretty cool.
Alright, and let's check out the inside of our room.
Our first afternoon aboard our Amazon Cruise was pretty relaxed and we got to witness one of the most spectacular sunsets ever.
The following morning called for an early start with everyone ready to board the skiff by 6:30 a.m. Our guide had lured us with the promise of wildlife and a delicious breakfast aboard the boat, and thankfully he delivered on both of those.
That morning we saw countless blue and yellow macaws, a school of pink dolphins playfully breaking through the water, and sloths slowly going about their day.
As for breakfast, the captain took us to a secluded lagoon covered in a blanket of water lettuce, where we parked the boat and enjoyed a three course breakfast featuring: fruit-kebabs, chicken and avocado salad, and hot sandwiches. It was the perfect way to start off our day on the Amazon.
So we are back in the jungle. This afternoon we are doing a jungle walking excursion. And we're also going to be doing a canopy walk across a series of suspension bridges. So we're just on the trail. We've got our rubber boots back on.
Meal times were another highlight of our cruise aboard the Delfin I. They had an international menu sure to satisfy every palate, but they also made sure to use Amazonian ingredients and feature Peruvian-inspired dishes at every meal. Every meal was a delight to our foodie taste buds.
So good morning. It is another beautiful day on the Amazon and we've just finished breakfast and we're now heading out on our first excursion of the day. We will be going piranha fishing and if you watched our previous video we already did that at the treehouse; however, I was very unsuccessful while Sam caught the biggest piraña yet.
So we officially ran out of bait for our piranha fishing so we kind of gave up on that activity. But right now we're trying kayaking down one of the smaller tributaries of the Amazon.
I'm the captain of this ship. And that is a scary thought. Cruising down the Amazon.
So we are about to reach the point where the Ucayali River and the Marañón River meet together to form the Amazon. So that moment calls for a toast.
So here is a toast to travels in the Amazon. Salut!
Yeah, so we're visiting this cool kind of little local village. It is called Sanfrancisco. San Francisco. And it has only been around since 1974 so it is just over 40 years old.
So what are you going to do Audrey? Apparently help squeeze sugarcane.

Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Cruise HD - Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Tours
Pacaya--Samiria National Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Peru with an area of more than 20,000 km², containing a rich eco diversity and being the largest reserve in the country and the second largest in the Amazon region. The reserve is triangular shaped by Marañón and Ucayali River in the South, just before their junction originating the Amazon River. Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Region and to promote the sustainable development of the local towns.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve
183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos. The shortest route is Iquitos -- Nauta by highway and then a trip on the river from Nauta to the village, Comunity of 20 de Enero, about three to four hours by boat. To be able to enter, you must request permission from INRENA and pay the corresponding fees. Comprising a large part of the provinces of Loreto, Requena, Ucayali, and Alto Amazonas, it has an area of 2'080.000 hectares making it the largest in the country and in South America. It is also known as the most extensive area of protected floodable forest (várzea) in the Amazon Rainforest. It is bordered by two large rivers: the Marañon in the north and the Ucayali -- Puinahua Canal to the south.
Inside the reserve, there are three river basins: the Pacaya River basin, the Samiria River basin, and the Yanayacu-Pucate River basin. There are also numerous lakes, gorges, canals, and oxbows. It has an annual monthly temperature between 20°C (68°F) and 33°C (91°F) and an annual rain fall of 2000 to 3000 millimeters, which allows for its huge biodiversity: 527 bird species, 102 mammal species (among them the pink dolphin), 69 species of reptiles, 58 species of amphibians, 269 fish species, and 1024 species of wild and cultivated plants. The reserve is a refuge for different endangered species like the charapa turtle (Podocnemis expansa), the spider monkey (Ateles sp.), the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the red macaw (Ara macao), cedar trees (Cederla odorata), and others. Furthermore, there are diverse protection and natural resource management projects like the one aimed at repopulating the taricaya and the charapa river with turtles in the artificial beaches of the reserve. It is truly amazing to watch the final stage of the process, the freeing of the newborns into the rivers, gorges, and lakes of the reserve. The level of involvement of the local population is remarkable. On the edges of Pacaya-Samiria on the banks of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers, more than 42.000 people live grouped in ninety-four communities and another 50.000 inhabit the 109 villages in the buffer zone. Almost all of them make a living from fishing, farming, or hunting and wild fruit and greens picking.

Pacaya--Samiria National Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Peru with an area of more than 20,000 km², containing a rich eco diversity and being the largest reserve in the country and the second largest in the Amazon region. The reserve is triangular shaped by Marañón and Ucayali River in the South, just before their junction originating the Amazon River. Its main purpose is to preserve the ecosystems of the Omagua Region and to promote the sustainable development of the local towns.

183 km / 114 miles southwest of Iquitos. The shortest route is Iquitos -- Nauta by highway and then a trip on the river from Nauta to the village, Comunity of 20 de Enero, about three to four hours by boat. To be able to enter, you must request permission from INRENA and pay the corresponding fees. Comprising a large part of the provinces of Loreto, Requena, Ucayali, and Alto Amazonas, it has an area of 2'080.000 hectares making it the largest in the country and in South America. It is also known as the most extensive area of protected floodable forest (várzea) in the Amazon Rainforest. It is bordered by two large rivers: the Marañon in the north and the Ucayali -- Puinahua Canal to the south.
Inside the reserve, there are three river basins: the Pacaya River basin, the Samiria River basin, and the Yanayacu-Pucate River basin. There are also numerous lakes, gorges, canals, and oxbows. It has an annual monthly temperature between 20°C (68°F) and 33°C (91°F) and an annual rain fall of 2000 to 3000 millimeters, which allows for its huge biodiversity: 527 bird species, 102 mammal species (among them the pink dolphin), 69 species of reptiles, 58 species of amphibians, 269 fish species, and 1024 species of wild and cultivated plants. The reserve is a refuge for different endangered species like the charapa turtle (Podocnemis expansa), the spider monkey (Ateles sp.), the giant river otter (Pteronura brasiliensis), the red macaw (Ara macao), cedar trees (Cederla odorata), and others. Furthermore, there are diverse protection and natural resource management projects like the one aimed at repopulating the taricaya and the charapa river with turtles in the artificial beaches of the reserve. It is truly amazing to watch the final stage of the process, the freeing of the newborns into the rivers, gorges, and lakes of the reserve. The level of involvement of the local population is remarkable. On the edges of Pacaya-Samiria on the banks of the Marañon and Ucayali Rivers, more than 42.000 people live grouped in ninety-four communities and another 50.000 inhabit the 109 villages in the buffer zone. Almost all of them make a living from fishing, farming, or hunting and wild fruit and greens picking.

The Urubamba River is one of the primary rivers that feeds the Amazon river and it flows right through the Sacred Valley of Peru. During our Adventures by Disney Peru trip, we enjoyed the opportunity to go whitewater rafting down the Urubamba River.
With class 2 and 3 rapids, this section of the Urubamba offers a great mix of float time to enjoy the spectacular views and Incan ruins, as well as some exciting rapids to traverse along the way! As you can see in the video, rafting down the Urubamba provides some of the most amazing scenery I've ever seen. In addition to that, you see several Incan terraces and buildings that have been in existence for hundreds of years!
About 2/3 of the way through the trip, we pulled the boats to the side of the river for our guides to analyze one particular section of rapids. This section changes daily based on natural water flow and our guides felt it was just too dangerous to traverse. So, we got out and walked while our guides safely moved the boats through the rapids.
After about 2 hours of floating and rafting, in typical Adventures by Disney style, you walk up the river bank and find several tents for changing into dry clothes, snacks to curb your hunger, coca tea and coffee, and lots of chatting about your whitewater rafting adventure in Peru! During all of this, our guides pulled the boats up the shore and broke them down.

John Walter Gregory, the British geologist, drowned in the river on June 2, 1932 while on a geological expedition to the Andes.
The Urubamba is divided into Upper Urubamba and Lower Urubamba, the dividing feature being the Pongo de Mainique, an infamous whitewater canyon.

Located on the Amazon River, it is only 106 m (348 ft) above sea level, although it is more than 3,000 km (1,864 mi) from the mouth of the Amazon at Belém (Brazil) on the Atlantic Ocean. It is situated 125 km (78 mi) downstream of the confluence of the Ucayali and Marañón rivers, the two main headwaters of the Amazon River. Iquitos has long been a major port in the Amazon Basin. It is surrounded by three rivers: the Nanay, the Itaya, and the Amazon.
The city can be reached only by airplane or boat, with the exception of a road to Nauta, a small town roughly 100 km (62 mi) south. Ocean vessels of 3,000 tons or 9,000 tons[1] and 5.5 metres (18 ft) draft can reach Iquitos from the Atlantic ocean, 3600 km away.
Most travel within the city is via bus, motorcycle, or auto rickshaw (mototaxi, motocarro or motokar). Transportation to nearby towns often requires a river trip via peque-peque, a small public motorized boat.
The climate is hot and humid, with an average relative humidity of 85%. The wet season lasts from around November to May, with the river reaching its highest point in May. The river is at its lowest in October.European-Peruvians established Iquitos as a Jesuit mission to the indigenous peoples in the 1750s. In 1864 it started to grow when the settlers created the Loreto Region and made Iquitos its capital. It is the seat of a Roman Catholic Apostolic Vicariate.[2]
Iquitos was known for its rubber industry through the rubber boom of the first decade of the 20th century; it attracted thousands of immigrants from around the world, mostly young, single men who hoped to make their fortunes in rubber. The rise of the automobile and related industries had dramatically increased the worldwide demand for rubber. Some men became merchants and bankers, and made their fortunes that way. Many of the European men married indigenous women and stayed in Peru the rest of their lives, founding ethnically mixed families. The immigrants brought European clothing styles, music and other cultural elements to Iquitos.
Among the unique communities formed by the 19th-century rubber boom immigration was one of Sephardic Jews from Morocco. Many of the men married Peruvian women and made families in Iquitos. They established a synagogue and the Jewish Cemetery. By the end of the 20th century, four or five generations later, most descendants were no longer practicing Jews. In the 1990s, a descendant of a Jewish settler undertook serious study of the religion and began to revive Judaism among his family, friends, and other Sephardim descendants. After years of study, with the help of a sympathetic Conservative rabbi in Lima and another from Brooklyn, New York, eventually a few hundred people learned and practiced and converted. (Conversion was necessary as their mothers were not Jewish.) Many of the converts emigrated to Israel under its right of return policy.[3]
The wealthiest Europeans built great mansions in the late 19th century, some of which survive. Casa de Fierro (Spanish for the Iron House) was designed by Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower. After rubber seeds were smuggled out of the country and began to be cultivated in quantity elsewhere, the Peruvian boom came to an end. The city is still an important trading port in the Amazon basin.
