The same computer architecture could deliver a smartphone with 100TB of storage and weeks of battery life. THE WHY With The Machine HP Labs is aiming for a quantum leap in performance and efficiency, lower costs and improved security. According to HP, a Machine server could address 160 petabytes of data in 250 nanoseconds. It is expected to be about six times more powerful and consume 80 times less energy. The Machine would make it possible to tackle currently impractical computational tasks and data sets in areas like genomics. It would help the world cope with the exponentially increasing volume of data to be further fuelled by the Internet of Things, precision medicine and personal genomics. THE HOW HP has nearly 75% of it's research division staff working on The Machine It's fundamental re-invention of the computing architecture of the past 60 years. HP is applying Elon Musk's “physics reasoning” in it's re-imagining of computer architecture. Physics reasoning has been crucial to Musk's success with SpaceX, Tesla and Solar City THE MACHINE'S ARCHITECTURE HP's new concept is electrons for computing , photons for communication (photonic chips, fibre optics) and ions for storage (memristors). MEMRISTOR MEMORY HP's memristor is memory that's faster and more efficient than flash memory. It's also non-volatile so, it doesn’t lose data when a device loses power.  In The Machine flash memory and slower hard drive memory are replaced with a single block of significantly faster memristor memory (no distinction between storage and memory). PHOTONICS DATA TRANSFER Conventional computer architecture moves data between memory/storage and the processor using electrons which places restrictions on component design due to field effects. The Machine's data will be transferred by photons of light through fibres and silicon based photonic chips. It will provide near instantaneous data transfer between memory and computer processors. This new computer architecture has allowed HP to radically rethink The Machine's computing equipment configuration as the design restrictions contemporary physical limits applying to electron data transfer don’t apply. COMPUTER PROCESSORS To improve energy efficiency, HP is abandoning general-purpose processors for groups of specialized highly energy-efficient chips as found in mobile devices. NEW OPERATING SYSTEM Flash memory chips and hard drives read and write data very slowly compared to the operational pace of a processor chip. HP's us of photonic data transfer and a single block of super fast memristor memory eliminates this speed mismatch. This allows the elimination of the large proportion of contemporary software code for the present computer architecture which handles the interaction between slow memory and a fast processor. To take advantage, HP is working on a fundamentally new operating system called Carbon to be released open source. HP intend to remove all the contemporary operating system complexity accumulated from years of updates that cause crashes and open security weaknesses. HP needs a disruptive new technology like The Machine in order to sell hardware to the likes of Google and Facebook who install their own stripped down servers at minimised costs. HP predicts it will bring the Machine to market within five years.
