UNUKUPUKUPU is the name of the rigorous hula curricula of Dr. Taupōuri Tangarō at Hawai'i Community College, University of Hawai'i System. Dr. Tangarō describes the crucial role the Native Hawaiian language has played throughout the history of hula. UNUKUPUKUPU is a descendant of the centuries old 'Aiha'a (Sacred Dance) traditions of Hālau O Kekuhi, Hilo, Hawai'i. Dr. Tangarō was a participant in the 2012 Campus and Community Festival program. This video was produced as part of the Hawai'i participation in the upcoming 2013 Folklife Festival program One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage. Stay tuned for more previews of this program. [Catalog No. CFV10493A; Copyright 2013 Smithsonian Institution]

Yellow crazy ants have been wreaking havoc on the native Hawaiian wedge-tailed shearwater seabird population by spraying them and their baby chicks with acid, causing numerous injuries and deformities. Wedge-tailed shearwater seabirds are under attack by yellow crazy ants in Hawaii. The tiny insects spray formic acid which can cause bodily damage to nesting birds, especially to exposed areas like the bills, feet, and eyes. Their aggressive actions are considered so brutal that some adult shearwaters, which can be very site-faithful, sometimes abandon their traditional nesting sites. As the birds burrow their nests in the ground, their chicks are prime targets. Those that do end up being hatched amidst the ants often become deformed, with misshapen beaks, skin-covered eyes, and missing toes. Yellow crazy ants are considered “tramp ants” which act cooperatively within their own community while acting aggressively towards other species to expand their territory. Their actual origins are unknown although Africa and Asia are possibilities, but they are also found in Australia, and various islands in the Indian and Pacific oceans including Madagascar and the Galapagos. It is thought that these yellow ants were introduced to Hawaii, a place with no native ants, when cargo ships carrying them arrived around 1952. Scientists are currently unable to eradicate the highly entrenched, resilient insects. Their goal is to contain the ants long enough at two sites in March to allow the seabirds to hatch and raise healthy chicks.

What started in the early 1980s as a humble yet steadfast attempt to bring the nearly extinct native Hawaiian language back to the mouths and ears of our babies, the Pūnana Leo has become one of Hawaiʻi’s leading educational programs. A status that was confirmed by the full Accreditation of the Pūnana Leo preschools by the World Indigenous Nations Higher Education Consortium (WINHEC).

Waimea Hawaiian Homesteaders' Association is a nonprofit grantee under First Nations Development Institute's Native Agriculture and Food Systems Initiative (NAFSI). First Nations' support has assisted the association's "Farming for the Working Class" project that enables Native Hawaiian homestead families to start actively farming their fallow land to grow fresh produce for themselves and the community. The program consists of hands-on farm training, paired with classroom-based learning and business training. Funding for this project and video was generously provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. http://hstrial-wwaimeahomestead.homestead.com/

Hawaii's native forests have been harvested for wood and cleared to make room for agriculture and development. Those that have survived still face attack from alien species that threaten to choke out and replace indigenous plant-life. What's being done to restore Hawaii's forests and protect them for the future? Mahealani Richardson moderates the discussion.
