Soon afterward, the group declared the establishment of a dubious "caliphate" in the area it controls and rebranded itself the Islamic State. With Iraq's army weakened and radical militants advancing on Baghdad, the country's Iran-backed Shia militias — which have their own history of sectarian abuses — fought back, halting the Islamic State's progress. The militias have successfully combated Islamic State fighters on the ground with the assistance of air strikes from a US-led military coalition. But their growing influence within Iraq's government amid accusations that they have harmed Sunnis in areas that they control has led many to fear that the militias threaten the country's fragile sectarian and political balance. VICE News traveled to Iraq in December to witness firsthand how Shia militias are taking the fight to the Islamic State, and to document the fallout of their controversial rise to power. Turkey's three leading opposition parties slammed the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) over what they portrayed as a weakened democracy, worsened economy and botched Syria policy during their May 30 rallies. "Would you say 'yes' to HDP to end the system of slavery?" the Kurdish problem-focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş asked hundreds of thousands of his party's supporters during their campaign rally at Kazlıçeşme Square in Istanbul. Blaming the government for polarizing the country, Demirtaş stressed that the ruling party supporters who came to a nearby square to listen to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu "are also brothers and sisters." "They are not our enemy. We will live together. Do they have the courage to say the same thing?" he asked. At one point, Demirtaş interrupted his speech out of respect for the Islamic call to prayer that was heard at the square, where Turkish flags were waved together with the flags of HDP and Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), as well as the symbols of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). Portraits of modern Turkey's founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk were also in the square. Demirtaş then said that a vote cast for the HDP would mean that Turkey's new parliament "will not decide to wage war" and its deputies would be "honest workers, not thieves." "We will care about the oppressed. We won't be involved in any dirty business," he added. Daily Cumhuriyet published images on May 29 allegedly showing Turkey's National Intelligence Agency (MİT) trucks carrying weapons into Syria early last year before officials launched a criminal probe into the newspaper and issued a gag order. MHP chair: Violence, terror and barbarity plans In his party's election rally in the eastern province in Erzurum on May 30, the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) chair Devlet Bahçeli also touched upon the issue. "Violence, terror and barbarity plans of Erdoğan and Davutoğlu have been found in MİT's trucks," Bahçeli said. "With what authority did Erdoğan send weapons to groups with blood on their hands? What was their interest?" he asked. In an interview with AFP on May 30, Davutoğlu said he could not comment fully on the issue because of "state secrecy," but said Turkey provided the Syrian people and the Free Syrian Army with assistance, without specifying whether the aid was of a military nature. PM Davutoğlu: Those aids were for Turkmens in Syria Turkish PM directly responded to Bahçeli's accusation in his own election rally in Ankara. "I'll say it with no hesitation: Those aids were going to our Turkmen brothers in Bayırbucak," Davutoğlu said, using the Turkish name of the region around the Syrian city of Latakia. He added that the publication of photographs amounted to "espionage" as they were "state secret." Shortly after the Cumhuriyet’s report, a Turkish prosecutor had imposed a gag order on the media and launched a criminal investigation into whether the daily breached terrorism laws by publishing the footage. Charges include "obtaining information on state security," "political and military espionage" and "propaganda for a terrorist organisation". CHP chair: AKP's model is Pope, but not Prophet Mohammad The main opposition Republican People's Party chair Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, on the other hand, opted to keep focusing on economic issues during his campaign rally in the western Black Sea province of Zonguldak on May 30. "The government spent $5.5 billion for 2 million Syrian brothers in Turkey," Kılıçdaroğlu noted, slamming the ruling AKP for labelling CHP's electoral promises to millions of voters as "populism." "They bought luxury cars for themselves, wasting billions of liras from your pocket. And now they say that Pope [Francis] has a car, too. If you are a good Muslim, why wouldn't you take our dear Prophet [Mohammad], who lived a humble life, as a model?" he asked, promising local miners a better future after the upcoming election.

Van Nuys, CA - (FOX 11) With a name like Kobee Factory, you might not be thinking Dinner Out. On a less than glamorous street in Van Nuys, the restaurant's Chef Owner Wafa Ghrier cooks her menu as if you're a guest in her home in Syria. What's kobee? It's a traditional Middle Eastern dish made with bulgur wheat, beef, spices and pine nuts. Perhaps, you've seen the dish on other menus listed as kibbeh. At this small, spare restaurant, the kobee comes in three shapes; the most popular are cooked on a grill like a burger, the other is like a croquette, deep fried until the outer crust is smooth and crunchy. Watching Wafa make the kobee is a treat. She takes the dough for the crust and quickly forms a mini saucer. She then spoons in the meat filling, then tops with another flat disk. Her hands smooth the edges until the kobee looks like a round turnover. In Syria, this is the version favored for summer. When it's too cold to barbecue outside, the kobee is deep fried. It's also given a different shape, rounder and pointed on the ends. Wafa's son Louie told me that the way his mother shapes the fried kobee is a secret. She takes a blob of dough and shapes into a small pocket. She fills it with the meat filling and then that's when the magic begins. Her fingers move quickly to seal the top over the filling. (http://goo.gl/G1j6ph) “That was the first time ever realizing the ‘soft’ power of music,” Jandali said in New York, the week of his debut at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall. He moved his parents to the U.S. soon after the incident in July 2011, but four years into the Syrian conflict, Jandali remains focused on using his music to raise awareness and, he hopes, help bring down the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. “It is their music,” he said, referring to those resisting Assad. “I’m inspired by their courageous acts, by their memories, by their history. You have an 8,000-year-[old] culture here. And I am honored to have this opportunity to be their voice.” Jandali describes his music, which has been performed by the Royal Philharmonic and other major orchestras, as “American neo-classical,” incorporating Middle Eastern melodies, rhythms and modes into new symphonies, sonatas, chamber works and other forms. At Carnegie Hall, Jandali premiered new chamber works for piano, cello and oud, with cellist Laura Metcalf and oud player Abdulrahim Alsiadi. He said that Syria's ancient culture inspired the works. “Each one is a story, a story of beautiful counterpoint, between the call of prayer from a minaret and the church bells in Damascus — or a child’s cry in Homs,” he said. Classically trained at the Arab Institute of Music in Damascus, Jandali became interested in ancient Syrian music when he learned of Ugarit, an ancient city near where he had grown up in Homs. “This is the city that invented the oldest form of musical notation. It dates back to 1400 B.C.,” Jandali said, holding a replica of a carved stone tablet about the size of an iPhone. “It has both words and music, and instructions on tuning the lyre. It is a song about a woman who couldn’t have a child, asking the moon god at the time to help her bear a child so her civilization could continue.” The song became the basis for his first album, "Echoes from Ugarit." The two islands Grande Terre and Basse Terre form the French Caribbean Island Guadeloupe like two butterfly wings, separated only by a narrow channel. The modern infrastructure and the good food are mixed with the local culture. Gwoka is the music of Guadeloupe, which is reminiscent of slavery. Located on the lesser Antilles, Guadeloupe is the French part of the Caribbean and belongs to the European Union. It consists out of different islands: Grande Terre consists of limestone with long beautiful beaches, Basse Terre is a mountainous island with extensive rainforest and the volcano, la Soufrière. There are also the smaller islands of Marie-Galante and La Désirade, and the Îles des Saintes. When Christopher Columbus came to Guadeloupe in 1463, the existing populations were the Caribs. But Christopher Columbus did not stay, because the Spanish wanted to discover larger islands. The smaller island in the Caribbean were colonized by the British and French, so in 1635 Guadeloupe by the French. It was mainly farmers from Normandie, Brittany and Charente settled on the island and cultivated Coffee and sugarcane plantations. Slavery was abolished in 1794, but it was reintroduced by Napoleon in 1802 because of the cheap labour and lasted until 1848. The civilization today is creole, a melting pot: French, the descendants of black slaves, Indian immigrants, Syrian-Libanese immigrants and nowadays Chinese immigrants. Creole cuisine is a mixture of European food with African ingredients, oriental flavours and products from the Caribbean. Gwoka is the traditional music on Guadeloupe, but not only music and danse, but also the joy of life and a reminder of the time of slavery ------- Caribbean Moments shows a different side to the Caribbean. Everyone visualises sand, sunshine and palm trees – but hardly anyone really discovers what lies behind them. In fact an unbelievable variety of cultures, music and religions has developed as a result of the different influences – African, Indian, English, French and authentically Caribbean. This documentary series attempts to portray the people - be they the Rastas, who have a lot to say about their mission, the Amerindians in Trinidad, who still have their own Queen, or the Black Caribs – a mixture of escaped slaves and Caribs. In addition, of course, there’s a huge variety of music: steelpan, parang, calypso, soca and chutney soca shape Trinidad, whilst other islands are especially scenically beautiful, such as Dominica, which is actually a single rain forest and which seduces with its abundant vegetation. Here too are the true Caribs, who occupy themselves with traditional boat building in the same way as their ancestors did centuries ago. The films were produced in 6 parts to create a documentary series that shows what lies beneath the surface.

Scores killed in explosion at Turkish cultural centre near Syrian border

An explosion outside a cultural centre in the Turkish town of Suruc near the border with Syria killed at least 31 people and wounded dozens more on Monday, in an attack Ankara attributed to the militant IS group. Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan immediately condemned the bombing, calling it a terrorist attack. "We are drowning in grief that 28 citizens died and a large number of people were injured as a result of an act of terror," Erdogan said during a visit to the Turkish breakaway state in northern Cyprus. "On behalf of my people, I curse and condemn the perpetrators of this brutality." The Turkish interior ministry also said that initial evidence indicated it "was a suicide attack by the Islamic State [group]". Television footage showed bodies lying beneath trees outside the building in the mostly Kurdish town in southeastern Turkey, which lies some 10 kilometres from the Syrian border. "I saw more than 20 bodies. I think the number of wounded is more than 50. They are still being put into ambulances," one witness told Reuters by telephone, giving his name as Mehmet. "It was a huge explosion, we all shook." Pervin Buldan, a senior lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish HDP opposition party, said local officials were investigating the possibility that it was a suicide bombing. Multicultural events on this campus are often notorious for being reduced to food, music and dance, without an attempt to create a cross-cultural understanding of a shared history of struggle that informs multi-cultural movements for liberation and equal rights. NoCR, was created with the hope of uniting peoples of all races, cultures, nations, religions, abilities and sexual orientations through a multicultural perspective and understanding. Artists, musicians, writers, activists, students and community members come together to celebrate the many histories, stories, traditions, and cultural and artistic expressions that together create a multicultural vision of struggle and liberation. Every year NoCR features live performances, art making, food, and various other activities to celebrate our resilience and honor the ways in which communities of color continue to resist and flourish within the university. NoCR is more than a concert or a show, it is an opportunity for communities on and off campus to come together and share stories, skills and resources. Latakia is one of the last cities in Syria under full government control LATAKIA, Syria -- There are few places left in Syria where a "good shot" has nothing to do with guns, but instead, a score on a volleyball court. Latakia, on the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the last cities in the country under full government control. If you're Syrian and you can afford it, this is where you come for your summer vacation -- and to block out Syria's vicious war, which is creeping ever closer. Less than 50 miles away, extremist fighters took the city of Jisr al Shugour in May. Rebel groups now control large areas of countryside. Only half an hour's drive out of Latakia we found one of the Syrian army posts holding the line. We weren't allowed to film their fighting positions, just the soldiers checking traffic for rebel sympathizers and weapons. Beyond the Syrian government checkpoint is contested territory. The Syrian military -- tired and overstretched -- doesn't like to admit it, but things are not going well. Over the past year they've lost ground to ISIS and a whole patchwork of extremist groups. Russian President Vladimir Putin rarely gives interviews to foreign media, but at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum last week, he spoke with Charlie Rose on a wide range of topics. Russian Vladimir Putin dove into his country’s recent acts of aggression in an interview with PBS, stressing that he insists upon respect for Mother Russia on the world stage — or else. “I keep hearing that Russia wants to be respected. Don’t you want to be respected? Isn’t there anyone who wants to [not] be self-respected and humiliated? That is a strange way to see things — it’s not an exclusion which Russia demands to be respected. Is there anyone who wants to be neglected and humiliated?” Putin said. “It’s something about respect or the lack of respect. The thing is we want to meet our own interests without detriment to our partners,” he said. “But sure we count on a constructive and substantial dialogue. And when there is none, or let’s say the unwillingness to talk to us, then there is a counter-response on our side.” The crisis in Ukraine, he said, was their fault because they didn’t respect Russia. “Ukraine was proposed to sign an association agreement. As everybody knows, Ukraine is area member within the framework. And it is Ukraine who insisted on establishing — there are lots of incentives and benefits. For 17 years we have been negotiating with Euro on the conditions of our accession to the WTO,” Putin said. “It’s not the way people do things. And on our proposal to hold associations, we answered it is none of your business. Is that the way issues are discussed and settled, particularly with Russia? It isn’t about just respect. We want our interests to be protected.” Russia, he insisted, “is aimed at developing good neighborly relations, both with Iran and with all the countries in the region.” And if President Obama inks a final nuclear agreement with Iran, it will be one of “his main achievements in the foreign policy.” “So I believe that the ball is on your side now. And we expect that among all the difficulties, the president of the United States will achieve the result,” Putin added. The sanctions placed on Russia after Putin invaded Ukraine are “very far from a catastrophe,” he said. Syria’s pharmaceutical sector has been hit by many problems and difficulties. Many companies have been destroyed or at least have been vandalized. Located in conflict zones, especially in the rural areas of Aleppo and Homs, pharmacological labs have gone out of service or their capacity has dropped to minimum. This has crippled production of medicines at home. The economic sanctions imposed on Syria have also severely affected the import of raw materials needed for production of drugs for many chronic diseases. Meanwhile, some labs have moved their production lines to safer areas while some others still able to produce drugs and export them to some neighboring Arab countries, such as Iraq. Importing raw materials from ally countries such as Iran and Russia also helps secure production of some essential medicines for chronic diseases such blood pressure, diabetes, and asthma, besides chemical doses for cancer patients.Despite the difficult financial situation of the government, Damascus is still committed to supplying medication on discounted prices. The Syrian pharmacological industry used to cover 93% of the local market needs and was also exported to 54 countries through 76 companies across Damascus, Damascus countryside, Homs and Aleppo, whose factories are no longer functional. Medicine prices remained stable during the first 22 months of the crisis, but the increasing effect of the exchange rate increased the prices up to 40%. Today Syrians are suffering from insufficient medicines and health care under severe economic sanctions on the country by United States and its allies, as well as the ongoing attacks by foreign-backed militants. The problem always lies with the stubbornness and incapability of Khaled Mashaal and Hamas to accept the fact that Israel is a neighbour, is a signatory with the Palestinians on peace agreements, and unfortunately Hamas is still adhering to the way of terror." 4. Yitkhak Herzog made the comments ahead of the weekly Israeli cabinet meeting in Jerusalem. He blamed what he referred to as the "stubbornness and incapability" of exiled Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal and Hamas in general for an unstable Palestinian regime. His comments came following reports from Damascus on Sunday that a planned meeting between Abbas and Mashaal would not take place. The news has dashed hopes of breakthrough talks that would have ended a year-long political deadlock and moved forward plans to form a national unity government between the militant Hamas - which controls the Palestinian parliament and cabinet - and Abbas' more moderate Fatah movement. Palestinian infighting between Hamas and Fatah loyalists has so far killed at least 62 people. The Syrian army has made fresh gains against terrorist groups in the flashpoint city of Zabadani and Latakia province. Army units, backed by Lebanese resistance fighters, killed at least 20 terrorists who were trying to flee Zabadani near the Lebanese border. Military sources say most of the victims were members of the al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front. The army also intensified airstrikes in Latakia province in order to cut the terrorists’ supply lines close to Turkey's border. It says five villages and hilltops have been liberated in the coastal province. Syrian armed forces also killed members of the ISIL terrorist group who were surrounding an air force academy in the northeastern Raqqah province. There were also airstrikes against the terrorists’ positions in Homs and Idlib provinces. Apart from Bosra and Palmyra this huge city of ruins is one of the most important Hellenist regions in Syria. Syria is the Pearl Of The East. Several well preserved mausoleums give the surreal looking desert landscape a truly ghostly atmosphere. The architecture of these multi-floored burial places are unique in the world. The view from the Arabian fortress extends across the picturesque ruins of the city to the endless horizons of the desert. The oasis and ancient remains of Palmyra look almost surreal as if in a dream yet the old ruins and the mighty fortress really do exist in very tangible and resplendent form.

Syria has played a major regional role, particularly through its central role in the Arab conflict with Israel, which since 1967 has occupied the Golan Heights, and by active involvement in Lebanese and Palestinian affairs. The population is mainly Sunni Muslim, but with significant Alawite, Shia, Christian and Druze minorities. Since the 1960s, Alawite military officers have tended to dominate the countrys politics. Ethnically, some 80% of the population is Arab, and the state is ruled by the Baath Party according to Arab nationalist principles, while approximately 20% belong to the Kurdish, Armenian, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Circassians minorities. This is a 50 minutes compilation of the battle covering it from the start to the end. Syria War 2015 - Idlib Offensive: Heavy Clashes During The Battle For Jisr al-Shughur. Syrian rebels contiuned their push against government troops in the Idlib and Hama region after they captured the strategic town of Idlib a few weeks ago. Their new offensive aimed to capture the city of Jisr al-Shughur in the Idlib governorote. The fighting for the town was part of the so called "Battle of Victory" that took place in the Idlib and Hama Governorates. In order of the fighting Jisr al-Shughur was captured by the rebels. The success of the battle has been attributed to better coordination between the Syrian opposition's backers. The offensive on Jisr al-Shughur was launched to cut off the government access to a major highway linking Idlib to Latakia. Several smaller towns in the vicinity where also captured by rebels in order of the battle. The Jisr al-Shughur offensive has been described as one of the "largest and most ambitious operations of the Syrian civil war" consisting of some 40 opposition groups, with the main goal being to outflank and interdict government troops who were sent to attempt to push back against the 2015 Idlib offensive, which followed the opposition victory at the Second Battle of Idlib. Free Syrian Army brigades were tasked with spearheading the cutting of Syrian Arab Army supply lines from the west, as well as carrying out secondary attacks against SAA positions across Idlib. Opposition forces were widely reported to be planning to move on the government's stronghold of Latakia following the capture of Jisr al-Shughur. After recent rebel victories against the Syrian government, some people began to fear a scenario where (hardline) rebels would swarm Damascus in the near future, despite government reassurances. The offensive was a joint operation of Free Syrian Army brigades and also hardline rebel groups under the banner of the Army of Conquest on the one side and the Syrian army supported by Hezbollah and the NDF on the other side. Syria War - Heavy Clashes And Fighting Continues During The Battle For Sheikh Miskin | Syrian Civil Civil War 2014 Heavy fighting and clashes still going on in Sheikh Miskin after the rebels officially claimed to have made major gains in the area with overtaking the city and making big advances with the fall of the regime base 82, one of the Syrian regime's largest military bases, located in Tel Hamad just a few KM east of Sheikh Miskin. The fresh fighting comes with a recent Syrian Army Armoured counteroffensive in the area aiming to retake the lost ground in Tel Hamad and Sheik Miskin. This offensive is an answere to the recent rebel held Daraa offensive that started in November 2014 and resulted in overtaking the neighbouring towns of Sheikh Miskin and Nawa. According to one rebel group known as the Southern Front the U.S. airstrikes in Syria helped them secure areas in Dara'a that opened up a pathway to Damascus. The Southern Front is a Syrian rebel coalition consisting of 49-56 rebel factions affiliated with the Free Syrian Army and is described by Western officials as the best organized of the mainstream opposition. Actually the Southern Front has an estimated strenght of about 38,000 fighter all operating in the Daraa region of southern Syria. With the regime focusing on the northern part of the country, it is struggling to keep up with the rebel advance in Dara'a. If the rebels continue their progress in the area, taking over neighborhoods and villages along the way, it will eventually meet some of the strongest Syrian military brigades and the only ones protecting Damascus. The advances appear to be a rare visible success story from efforts by the U.S. and its allies to train and arm moderate rebel fighters. If the rebels sucess in holding the gained ground they probertly will be able to threaten the Damascus-Deraa highway, a main lifeline for government forces. Also the rebel offensive could eventually link opposition fighters positions in Deraa and Qunaitra with Damascus rebel-held Ghouta suburbs. While the rebel forces fighting in the area are mostly western and jordanian backed groups the Syrian army has help from lebanese Hezbollah fighters and iranian volunteers operating in the area. The opposition news ageny SLN News claimed that the rebels already repelled the army counter attacks but it is more likely that the fighting still goes on since the Daraa region with its border to the opossition firendly country Jordan is an important area from strategic point of view. Syria War 2014 - Heavy Clashes And Fighting In The Battle For The Jasim Hospital | Syrian Civil War. This video documents heavy clashes and fighting between several Syrian Rebel brigades and the Syrian Army during the battle for the Jasim Hospital northwestern Daraa in southern Syria that took place between December 2013 and January 2014. Heavy clashes taking place around the hospital where reported during that time and rebel forces made numerous attempts to break into the building that was used as an army base by regime forces. The first heavier assault already started on Monday, Dec, 16. 2013 but the fighting went on till January 2014 as the rebels made the final breakthorugh with help of an vbied attack held out by members of the Al-Nusra Front. The citiy of Jasim itself and the main road leading to the hospital where mostly under full rebel control during the whole time of the siege and the syrian army soldiers where trapped inside the base left alone with nearly no support or reinforcements. The actuall strenght of the defenders is not know but their number must have been less than the attackers. The rebels also reported to have destroyed at least one tank near the hospital and released footage of three more being captured during and after the siege. Additionally to the siege , the city of Jasim was targeted by regime aerial bombardment using explosive barrels and missiles, while fierce clashes erupted on its the outskirts. Regime helicopter gunships also targeted the city of Iknhil and multiple other neighbouring towns. The assault resulted in several injuries among civilians, wich booth sides take responsibility for. The rebel attack was mainly held out by members of the Hamza Asadullah Brigade wich is now part of the Southern Front under the banner of the Free Syrian Army, you can hear the fighters in the first part of the Video saying "al jaysh el hor" what means Free Syrian Army in arabic and shows that these members affiliating themselves with the Free Syrian Army. The Mujahedeen Battalion Horan and the radical Al-Nusra Front where also participants of the battle. The main rebel advantage during the siege was the control of most parts of the surrounding area what made it easy for them to attack the base continuous from medium to large distance with all kind of weapons what led to the supression and demoralisation of the defenders inside. The footage from 00:00-18:00 is part of the assault in December 2013. At 18:00 the main assault at the begining of January 2014 is shown. The major succses in the battle was made by Al-Nusra Front members using a vbied to break into the base and in whose following smoke the rebels from all brigades where covered from precise return fire while approaching to the building leaving the engament to end in close room to room combat between the attackers and the defenders. After the attack two T-72 tanks where captured inside the base and at least two syrian soldiers whose fate is unkown where taken as captives by Al-Nusra. In order to the attack the hospital that didnt held any patients inside was mostly destroyed. Jasim is a small city with a population of 31,683 in the Izra' District of the Daraa Governorate in southern Syria. It is located over 30 kilometers north of Daraa and is near the towns of Nawa to the south, Kafr Shams to the north, Inkhil to the northeast and al-Harra to the northwest. The town was one of the first cities to participate in large-scale protests during the 2011-2012 Syrian uprising against the government on 18 March 2011. Further mass protests were reported on 22 April. On 1 April 2012, four Syrian Army soldiers were killed in clashes with rebel Free Syrian Army gunmen in Jasim according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
