The Pecos River flows through New Mexico and Texas, emptying into the Rio Grande. The headwaters of the Pecos River are located north of Pecos, New Mexico, United States, at an elevation of over 12,000 feet (3,700 m) feet on the western slope of the Sangre de Cristo mountain range in Mora County. The river flows for 926 miles (1,490 km) through the eastern portion of that state and neighboring Texas before it empties into the Rio Grande near Del Rio. The river's drainage basin is about 44,300 square miles (115,000 km2) in size.
Multiple dams have been built along the Pecos River. Santa Rosa Lake is 117 miles/188 km east of Albuquerque. Sumner Lake, formed by the 1939 Sumner Dam, is located between Santa Rosa and Fort Sumner, NM. Two dams are located north of Carlsbad, New Mexico, at Avalon Dam and Brantley Dam, to help irrigate about 25,000 acres (10,000 ha) as part of the Carlsbad reclamation project (established in 1906). Texas has also dammed the river at the Red Bluff Dam in the western part of that state to form the Red Bluff Reservoir. The portion of the reservoir that extends into New Mexico forms the lowest point in that state.

The infamous Devil's River in the southwest Texas desert near the border of Mexico tops many kayak anglers' bucket lists. But its lesser known sister, the Lower Pecos River, doesn't get much media attention. Two years ago, Bert and Dan Rodriguez attempted to paddle the 56 miles from Pandale to the Pecos High Bridge. Halfway through their trip, flash floods upriver caught up with them, forcing them to abandon their kayaks and gear and climb out of the deep canyon to be evacuated via helicopter. Now, two years later, the father and son duo have returned to the Pecos to attempt the expedition again. Robert will tag along to document the trip, and their foursome is rounded out by Daniel Underbrink, an experienced outdoorsman who has paddled this river several times. The group will encounter...
After months of planning, we set off on a 5 day, 60 mile trip down one of the last untamed rivers in Texas. The Pecos River. Even with all our preparedness and planning, nothing could have prepared us for what was to happen. We were cautious and ready for flash flooding, and chose our campsites accordingly, but I don't think anyone was ready for 33.79 feet of water. We lost everything to the river, but left with our lives.

A little more than 30-minutes from Santa Fe, the Pecos River is a popular trout fishery in Northern New Mexico. Heavily stocked with pan size rainbows, the fishery offers more than a dozen miles of roadside, public water to pitch salmon eggs in and catch wild and planted fish. Team Pautzke conquered the trout using Gold Label, Yellow Jackets and Orange Deluxe salmon eggs. The continuing adventures of two old Marines who decided to bust out of their day to day rut, challenge themselves and have a good time doing it. Actually on this trip there were three Marines. My son, recently honorably discharged from the Marine Corps after three tours of duty in Iraq, also joined us. This time we spend 3 days paddling down the Pecos River in West Texas with our sons and grandson. We hope to see you out there with us on the next trip!

Horsehead Crossing, a ford of the Pecos River. Horsehead Crossing was one of the few fordable points on the Pecos River before the twentieth century. Steep, muddy banks, unpredictable currents, and quicksand were natural barriers to travel. After long treks across the surrounding desert, thirsty animals were often poisoned by the briny river water or became hopelessly mired in the quicksand at the crossing. It was littered with horse, cattle, and mule skeletons. Horsehead Crossing was named for the horse skulls said to have been placed atop mesquite trees near the ford. The Comanche Trail was probably the first route that traversed Horsehead Crossing, which became a favorite camping place. Comanche and Kiowa raiding parties en route to the Llano Estacado from raids in Mexico found the fi...
This is a short video of fly fishing on the lower Pecos River in New Mexico. This high desert canyon habitat is significantly different than the upper canyon which is more alpine. Stoneflies and caddis are predominant and streamers and crayfish patterns are good ideas too.

Dirt City Chronicles, your source for local music... Albuquerque, N.M. Ground zero for heavy metal in New Mexico may well be Carlsbad, an intolerant burg nestled on the banks of the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico. C-bad has sustained a vigorous metal scene, for years producing a number of relatively successful regional bands. With some fluctuation across the “relatively successful” range. Working in a genre that appeals to a limited audience certainly didn't help matters none. Despite oodles of talent and tons of determination, major label stardom eluded these Little Texas sultans of schwing.
