Ram Jethmalani (Hindi: राम जेठ्मलानी, Sindhi: رام جيٺملاڻي), born 14 September 1923, in Shikharpur in Sindh, British India, (now in Pakistan) is an Indian lawyer and politician. He has served in various posts such as Union Law Minister and Chairman of Bar Associations. He has represented a sweep of cases from the high-profile to the controversial for which he has often faced severe criticism. He is the highest paid Indian lawyer. The family inherits its surname Jethmalani from Shri Jethmal who was a personality in Shikarpur, Pakistan and later a minister in Afghanistan.
Ram Jethmalani is known as a legal personality. Jethmalani is considered a maverick and has many distinctions to his credit. He completed his law at an early age of 18 and started professing law there until the partition of India after which when left his hometown and shifted to Bombay as a refugee. He came to India with his family and began his life fresh. He married Ratna Jethmalani, his first wife, in 1947, and Durga, his second wife. He has 2 sons and 2 daughters, two of whom, Mahesh Jethmalani and Rani Jethmalani are also well known lawyers.
Karan Singh is an Indian politician and member of the royal family of Jammu and Kashmir. He is a MP in the Rajya Sabha, a senior member of the ruling Indian National Congress Party serving as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Department, President of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), India's Ambassador to UNESCO, Chairman of the Auroville Foundation and of the Temple of Understanding, author, diplomat, champion of interfaith dialogue, and Hindu scholar. Singh (born 1931) is the son of the last ruler of the princely state of Kashmir and Jammu, Maharaja Hari Singh. In the 26th amendment to the Constitution of India promulgated in 1971, the Government of India abolished all official symbols of princely India, including titles, privileges, and remuneration (privy purses). Singh received the Padma Vibhushan in 2005.
Karan Singh was born on March 9, 1931, in Cannes, France, to the last ruler of the princely state of Kashmir and Jammu (also known as The Royal House of Jammu and Kashmir), Maharaja Hari Singh and his wife Maharani Tara Devi. He was educated at Doon School, Dehra Dun, and received a B.A. from Sri Pratap Singh (S. P.) College, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir University, and an M.A. in Political Science from Delhi University. He went on to receive a Ph.D. from Delhi University.
Pratap Bhanu Mehta is an Indian academic. He is currently the president of the Centre for Policy Research, a New Delhi-based think tank. The Centre for Policy Research is one of India’s most distinguished think tanks. He is also a been appointed to NYU Law School’s Global Faculty. He was previously Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard University; Associate Professor of Government and of Social Studies at Harvard, and for a brief period, Professor of Philosophy and of Law and Governance at Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Mehta obtained a B.A. from St John's College, Oxford in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) and a Ph.D in Politics from Princeton University.
Mehta has also done extensive public policy work. He was Member-Convenor of the Prime Minister of India’s National Knowledge Commission; Member of the Supreme Court appointed Lyngdoh Committee on Indian Universities and has authored a number of reports for leading Government of India and International Agencies. He is on the Board of Governors of IDRC, and other academic institutions. He is member of the World Economic Forum’s Council on Global Governance. He is also on the Editorial Board of numerous journals including the American Political Science Review and Journal of Democracy.
Harish Salve (हरीश साल्वे) is a lawyer who served as the Solicitor General of India from November 1, 1999 to November 3, 2002. He succeeded Santosh Hegde, after the latter was appointed a justice to the Supreme Court of India. Salve was a well-known lawyer and practiced, especially, constitutional law, commercial law and taxation law before his appointment. He had previously served as Amicus Curiae for the Supreme Court in multiple cases, and frequently represented parties before the Supreme Court of India and Delhi High Court. He had previous experience working with Attorney General, Soli Sorabjee, in 1980–1986. He declined to be nominated for a second 3-year term due to "personal reasons" when his first term ended in November 2002.
As of 2011, Salve continues to serve as a lawyer, arguing in some of India's highest courts, and has also served as Amicus Curiae in several Supreme Court cases. India Today magazine ranked him the 18th most powerful person in the country. Presently, Mr. Harish Salve is representing Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries Limited in the high profile gas dispute case against Anil Ambani's Reliance Natural Resources Limited.
Soli Jehangir Sorabjee (born 9 March 1930) is an Indian jurist.
Soli Sorabjee was born on 9 March 1930 in Bombay, and after an education at Government Law College, Bombay, was admitted to the bar in 1953. At college, he was awarded the Kinloch Forbes Gold Medal in Roman Law and Jurisprudence (1952).
In 1971, Sorabjee was designated Senior Advocate of the Supreme Court of India. He served as Solicitor-General of India from 1977 to 1980. He was appointed Attorney-General of India on 7 April 1998, a post he held until 2004.
In March 2002, Soli Sorabjee was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his defense of the freedom of expression and the protection of human rights. He worked on the Citizen's Justice Committee which represented pro bono the 1984 anti-Sikh riots victims.
In March 2006 he was appointed an Honorary Member of the Order of Australia (AM), "for service to Australia-India bilateral legal relations".
Some of the other important cases he has appeared for are: Keshavananda Bharati, Maneka Gandhi, S.R. Bommai, I.R. Coelho, etc. He recently appeared in the case of B.P. Singhal, where the Apex Court held that Governors could not be dismissed without due cause.
