Cooper Creek
Cooper Creek (formerly Cooper's Creek) (28°23′S 137°41′E / 28.383°S 137.683°E / -28.383; 137.683) is one of the most famous rivers in Australia because it was the site of the death of the explorers Burke and Wills in 1861. It is sometimes known as the Barcoo River from one of its tributaries and is one of three major Queensland river systems that flow into the Lake Eyre basin. The flow of the creek depends on monsoonal rains falling months earlier and many hundreds of kilometres away in eastern Queensland. At 1,300 kilometres (810 mi) in length it is the second longest inland river system in Australia after the Murray-Darling system.
History
Indigenous Australians have inhabited the area for approximately 20,000 years, with over 25 tribal groups living in the Channel Country area alone. A vast trade network had been stablished running from north to south with goods such as ochre sent north with shells and pituri moved south. Birdsville was once a major meeting place for conducting ceremonies and trade.

Located on the banks of Cooper Creek, about 12km's east of Windorah in far Western Queensland, this spot holds a special place in my heart, and I find it hard to drive past this spot without stopping and rolling out my swag for the night.

Cooper Creek flows its full length - DCQ News Update December 2010
Cooper Creek, Australia's iconic outback watercourse, is flowing the entire length of its catchment. This is last believed to have happened in 1956 or 1974. We fly a small acrobatic plane from the headwaters to Lake Eyre, camping by the creek and talking to the people who make their living in this boom and bust landscape. Come along and witness the spectacular transformation of the arid landscape as spreading channels and swamps breathe and the heart of the outback comes alive..

Doing a quick 500km loop to Innamincka to witness the floodwater from Cooper Creek flowing over the causeway at Innamincka. This is one of our favourite camps so far. Just outside of Innamincka on the Cooper Creek is an incredible low-cost bush camping area. We've setup on the Cooper to explore Innamincka and the surrounding area. $2 showers and a pub lunch at the Innamincka Hotel were a great way to kick things off! Just out of town we find the site's where Burke and Wills came to grief and learn a little more about the story of their expedition. Road closures meant that we weren't able to head out of town as we had hoped but the alternative route was incredible. We take a look around the historical Cordillo Downs station before finding a remote campsite without another person for miles around us. In this video I take a drones-eye-view of the area and talk through the campsite and an itinerary for driving there. Watch through to the ending to see an EPIC sunrise over Cooper Creek. So much history in this area, including the infamous Bourke and Wills Expedition.
