Shanhua District
Shanhua District (Chinese: 善化區; pinyin: Shànhuà Qū; Wade–Giles: Shan-hua; literally: "amelioration") is a suburban district of Tainan, a special municipality located in southwestern Taiwan, about 20 km northeast of Anping. Until December 25, 2010, it was an urban township in the dissolved Tainan County, which is now merged with the original Tainan City to form a single special municipality.
History
Shanhua was inhabited by the Taiwanese aboriginal tribe of Siraya, who called it Bakaloan (Chinese: 目加溜灣社; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ba̍k-ka-liù-oan siā) (see also Anding, bordering to the southwest). It was one of the four major towns (Chinese: 社) established by the tribe.
In 1625, the Dutch East India Company was driven back by the aborigines while trying to collect bamboo. The Dutch, however, were able to conquer the town in 1635, and started setting up schools and churches in the area, calling the place Tevoran (see modern-day Yujing). They encouraged Han settlers to cultivate the place.
In the Siege of Fort Zeelandia, Koxinga drove the Europeans out of Taiwan. Under the Kingdom of Tungning, Bakaloan was governed as Shanhua Village of Tien-hsing County (Chinese: 天興縣) of the Kingdom of Tungning. According to the Shanhua Urban Plan Total Review Report, the old name for the region is Wanli (灣裡) before it was changed back again to Shanhua Village (善化庄) under Japanese rule in 1920. In 1940, the village was upgraded to Zenka Town (善化街), Shinka District (新化郡), Tainan Prefecture.

Shanhua in Chinese means betterment. Shanhua Temple literally means Betterment Temple. It is commonly known as South Temple as it situated near Datong's South Gate. First constructed in 713 AD during the Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasty, Shanhua Temple was originally named Kaiyuan Temple. It was destroyed during the Five Dynasties period (906-960). Out of ten buildings at the temple, only three or four escaped destruction. Shanhua Temple was rebuilt and assumed its present configuration in 960 during the Khitan Liao Dynasty. When the Liao Dynasty was overthrown in 1122, most of its buildings were destroyed, although the Mahavira Hall survived. The temple was rebuilt during the Jin dynasty (1120-1234). In recent years, Tainan Science Park has attracted an influx of high-tech experts, changing the demographics of the area. And that’s had a big impact on Shanhua Business District.

Since the Southern Taiwan Science Park was developed, actually lots of people are coming here looking for handmade soap.
Apart from the soap, made with local sesame, the shop offers education and events, promoting the health benefits of handmade cosmetics. It seems metropolitan products can find their place even in areas known for more traditional agricultural industries. Their proximity to the high-tech Science Park helps, of course. Another store nearby is this shoe shop, which is almost 60 years old. It recently had a windfall thanks to the Quintuple Stimulus Vouchers.

The science park has brought many tech-based families into the area around Shanhua, a district once founded on agriculture and the birthplace of poets and politicians.

Shanhua in Chinese means betterment. Shanhua Temple literally means Betterment Temple. It is commonly known as South Temple as it situated near Datong's South Gate. First constructed in 713 AD during the Kaiyuan Period of Tang Dynasty, Shanhua Temple was originally named Kaiyuan Temple. It was destroyed during the Five Dynasties period (906-960). Out of ten buildings at the temple, only three or four escaped destruction. Shanhua Temple was rebuilt and assumed its present configuration in 960 during the Khitan Liao Dynasty. When the Liao Dynasty was overthrown in 1122, most of its buildings were destroyed, although the Mahavira Hall survived. The temple was rebuilt during the Jin dynasty (1120-1234). Another major repair work of the temple took place in year 1442-1445 during the Ming Dynasty, and the name was changed to Shanhua Temple as used until today. The largest and earliest hall, dating from the 11th-century Liao Dynasty, is the Mahavira Hall and is one of the largest of its kind in China. Also historically significant are the Temple Gate (Gate of Heavenly Kings) and the Hall of the Three Worthies, both dating from the12th century during the Jin dynasty.

Shanhua Temple is the most complete and largest surviving temple building of the Liao and Jin dynasties in China. The three pavilion roofs and four Liao and Jin buildings are preserved in one temple, which is unique in China and reflects the majestic atmosphere of the Sheng Tang Dynasty.
Shanhua Temple reflects the evolution and development of the architecture of the Tang, Song and Liao-Jin periods, reflecting this great transition and transformation of ancient Chinese architecture from Tang to Song.
The architecture of the Liao and Jin dynasties in Sunhwa Temple reflects the architectural characteristics of the period and is of great significance in understanding the heritage of northern minorities for Tang Dynasty wooden architecture. The combination of the building support elements of the inclined arch and the traditional arch also reflects the integration and development of the construction techniques of different regions.

Shanhua District
Shanhua District (Chinese: 善化區; pinyin: Shànhuà Qū; Wade–Giles: Shan-hua; literally: "amelioration") is a suburban district of Tainan, a special municipality located in southwestern Taiwan, about 20 km northeast of Anping. Until December 25, 2010, it was an urban township in the dissolved Tainan County, which is now merged with the original Tainan City to form a single special municipality.
History
Shanhua was inhabited by the Taiwanese aboriginal tribe of Siraya, who called it Bakaloan (Chinese: 目加溜灣社; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ba̍k-ka-liù-oan siā) (see also Anding, bordering to the southwest). It was one of the four major towns (Chinese: 社) established by the tribe.
In 1625, the Dutch East India Company was driven back by the aborigines while trying to collect bamboo. The Dutch, however, were able to conquer the town in 1635, and started setting up schools and churches in the area, calling the place Tevoran (see modern-day Yujing). They encouraged Han settlers to cultivate the place.
In the Siege of Fort Zeelandia, Koxinga drove the Europeans out of Taiwan. Under the Kingdom of Tungning, Bakaloan was governed as Shanhua Village of Tien-hsing County (Chinese: 天興縣) of the Kingdom of Tungning. According to the Shanhua Urban Plan Total Review Report, the old name for the region is Wanli (灣裡) before it was changed back again to Shanhua Village (善化庄) under Japanese rule in 1920. In 1940, the village was upgraded to Zenka Town (善化街), Shinka District (新化郡), Tainan Prefecture.
