Su concha está hecha de varias placas calcáreas que cubren su manto, el cual a su vez se fija casi herméticamente en el sustrato rocoso. De noche se alimenta de algas las cuales raspa con su rádula. De día se fija sésil fuera de la influencia de la luz solar, la que hace que uno pueda ver desplazándose a estos organismos, buscando la sombra.

I know it's foolish, utterly wrong, practically criminal to classify animals and their behavior in human terms...such as "modest" or "unassuming" or "humble"...but it is hard not to do so, especially when faced with one of these odd and sort of monstrous creatures - gumboot chitons (Cryptochiton stelleri), similarly known as giant pacific chitons and the chuckle-inspiring "wandering meatloaf"...I can't imagine trying to eat one. They're big, they're brick red, they're fairly impressive and they don't possess some of the simplest features we normally associate with anything really wild. I imagine, however, that despite their humility and modesty and unassuming nature...that these critters and their sort have outlived humans by quite a stretch in the cosmic scale of things. Truly, they are the charismatic megafauna of the chiton world...and I'm so glad to still encounter them during the lowest tides.

Chiton
Chitons /ˈkaɪtənz/ are small to large marine molluscs in the class Polyplacophora, formerly known as Amphineura. About 940extant and 430 fossil species are recognized.
They are also sometimes known as sea cradles or "coat-of-mail shells", or more formally as loricates, polyplacophorans, and occasionally as polyplacophores.
Chitons have a dorsal shell, which is composed of eight separate shell plates or valves. These plates overlap somewhat at the front and back edges, and yet articulate well with one another. Because of this, although the plates provide good protection for impacts from above, they nonetheless permit the chiton to flex upward when needed for locomotion over uneven surfaces, and also allow the animal to slowly curl up into a ball when it is dislodged from the underlying surface. The shell plates are surrounded by a structure known as a girdle.
Habitat
Chitons live worldwide, in cold water, warm water, and in the tropics. Most chiton species inhabit intertidal or subtidal zones, and do not extend beyond the photic zone.
