One of Pyongyang's many historic names is Ryugyong (류경; 柳京), or "capital of willows", as willow trees have always been numerous throughout the city's history, and many poems have been written about these willows. Even today, the city has numerous willow trees, with many buildings and places having "Ryugyŏng" in their names. The most notable of these is the uncompleted Ryugyong Hotel. The city's other historic names include Kisong, Hwangsong, Rakrang, Sŏgyong, Sodo, Hogyong, and Changan.[citation needed] During the colonial period (1910–1945), Pyongyang was named Puto ".
The peninsula was governed by the Korean Empire until it was annexed by Japan after the Russo-Japanese War in 1910. It was divided into Soviet- and American-occupied zones in 1945, after the end of World War II. North Korea refused to participate in a United Nations–supervised election held in the south in 1948, which led to the creation of separate Korean governments for the two occupation zones. North and South Korea each claimed sovereignty over the whole Korean Peninsula, which led to the Korean War of 1950. The Armistice Agreement of 1953 ended the fighting; but the two countries are officially still at war against each other, for a peace treaty was never signed. Both states were accepted into the United Nations in 1991.
Pyongyang Station is the central railway station of Pyongyang, North Korea. The station is the start of the Pyongbu and Pyongui Line, which were adjusted from the Kyongbu and Kyongui Lines used before the division of Korea to accommodate the shift of the capital from Seoul to Pyongyang. The Pyongui Line runs from Pyongyang to Sinuiju, while the Pyongbu Line theoretically runs through Seoul and ends at Busan; in practice, however, the line ends at Kaesong. It is also served by the Pyongnam Line, which runs from Pyongyang to Nampo.

Welcome to North Korea where you have to follow your guide’s instructions and only take pictures of what we say. To some the people are repressed, though they prefer to describe themselves as "protected," at least on camera. Life here is the result of a unique 70-year social experiment in which the people are "shielded" from the "corrupting influence" of the outside world. Dynastic leader Marshal Kim Jong-un, who inherited the job from his father and grandfather, continues their political heritage. An RTD film crew was granted rare access to this unique country, which may seem to have leapt from the pages of a dystopian novel, to see what lif

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un never completed plans to travel to Moscow for an event to mark the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe. Despite the cancellation, there was still important symbolic meaning behind the young leader’s choice of Russia for his first overseas trip as head of state. FTV’s Anne Hu takes a closer look at the warm relations between the two states. The Tumen River stretches more than 500 kilometers, though only the last 15 kilometers before the mouth serves as a border between Russia and North Korea. Along this section are two coasts, two countries and two very different places.Su C. F.FTV ReporterOn m

Top 10 Tourist Attractions in North Korea Pyongyang Travel Video Guide Documentary HD
https://www.facebook.com/learnwithsyed
WARNING: Some governments advise against all travel to North Korea due to the uncertain security situation caused by North Korea’s nuclear weapons development program and highly authoritarian and unpredictable regime.
Though there is little evidence of safety issues concerning tourists on organized expeditions, those planning to engage in activities that the North Korean government forbids must be prepared to face severe consequences.
Under no circumstances are you to say anything that could be perceived as an insult to or critical of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-Il, Kim Jong-Un, the Juche ideology, the Songun policy, the ruling Worker's Party of Korea, the North Korean government in general, or the citizens of North Korea. Simply avoid these topics if you can.

Inside North Korea by an American Tourist - Part 1 of 4 HD (TRAIN PORTION)
Train travel from China to Cult Korea: Beijing-Pyongyang. May 2010. See Videos 2, 3 and 4 for the walking tour of NK. This was a propaganda tour that brings tourists to the country's showcase cities and fertile regions. These videos give people thinking about visiting NK an overview of what they will see there (A variety of tours are offered but itineraries are often similar). These videos are neither truncated nor narrated. Footage is exclusive to regions in N. Korea where the elite population resides. Therefore you will not see how the majority of N. Koreans live, with oppression, famine, lack of human rights and medical care, or the most unfortunate 150,000 political victims living in Soviet Gulag/Nazi Concentration style camps.
South Korea maintains a cowardly and disturbing indifference to the large scale atrocities occurring in North Korea. In the 60 years since the division of the Korean Peninsula, South Korweakens have lost their sense of unity and urgency.
S. Korea has overwhelming military and non-military options if it wanted the Northern regime to collapse. It does not need to wait forever on the the vastly useless and toothless UN to solve South Korea's problem. Yet, the SK government and inhabitants are shockingly content with maintaining their segregation due to the massive financial costs of rebuilding the North's infrastructure and rehabilitating a mentally/physically stunted and uneducated population. Even though the reunification costs increases each year, the Holocaust stays alive because information connected South Korea ignores the suffering when they are morally responsible and fully capable of taking back their own country.
The S. Korean government downplays the N. Korean human rights abuses and over-hypes North Korea's military capacity to discourage citizens from talking about the necessity of freeing Korea. South Korea has 50 times greater GDP and generations more advance military, yet cowers to a starving, impoverished country with antique armaments.
N. Korean refugees are not warmly received in S. Korean society. South Korea does not voice opposition to China's illegal forced repatriation of N. Korean refugees, of which there may be over 100,000. When men, women and children are repatriated back to North Korea, they face cruel punishment and imprisonment, or if they had communicated with Westerners or religious groups, they are tortured and/or executed. Yet, this does not concern or alarm the prosperous South Koreans. North Korean lives are dispensable to them.
And this is all great news for tourists wanting to see a Stalinist/Maoist country in the 21st century. So no need to rush, you still have plenty of time to visit. The UN is powerless, and South Korea is spineless. If you want to help North Korean civilians, I recommend visiting HRNK (The Committee for Human Rights in North Korea) and the UK Manna Mission of Europe (which operates bakeries to feed NK children).

North Korea has come up with a new way to bring cold hard cash into its isolated country: export North Korean workers to slave away in the Siberian forest (often without telling them they're no longer in North Korea). We set out to investigate these camps and almost landed ourselves in quite a bit of trouble.

Launching Balloons into North Korea: Propaganda Over Pyongyang
North and South Korea are, both legally and philosophically, in a state of war. While the guns may be silent, the conflict between the two countries has now become one of propaganda.
With the assistance of the Human Rights Foundation, North Korean defectors now in South Korea have been launching hydrogen-filled balloons across the 38th parallel — carrying both money and propaganda. In late 2014, a balloon launch sparked a brief exchange of gunfire between North and South Korean soldiers, and even more recently, Pyongyang has promised that hellfire will rain on South Korea if any copies of the controversial Hollywood comedy The Interview make it across the border.
VICE News traveled to Seoul to meet frontline soldiers in this information war — and to attend a clandestine launch of propaganda balloons into the Hermit Kingdom.

We've always done our videos from the perspective of people living in South Korea, but we never really think of what it's like to just visit South Korea. Talking about paying your rent really doesn't apply to people on vacation, right? So we're gonna give a few travel tips for people visiting South Korea, so that you don't do the same mistakes our friends and family have.

An RTD film crew was granted rare access to this unique country, which may seem to have leapt from the pages of a dystopian novel, to see what life is really like and what the people really think of their homeland and its leader.

Inside North Korea: Relations With Russia and a Rare Glimpse of Their Joint Border
F.FTV ReporterOn my right is Russia. If you look further down to the right you can see North Korea’s Tumengang.Anne HuFTV News ChiefWe are at the North Korea-Russia border in the North Korean village of Chosal. Across the Tumen River is the Russian town of Khasan.Heading upstream from near the river mouth at the bank of the Tumen River at Chosal Village, we reach Tumengang neighborhood. There are close to 1,000 homes, each with gray roof tiles and blue window shutters.Tumengang Neighborhood GuideEverybody lives his or her own life. Doctors treat patients and teachers teach students.North Korean GuideThe first time I visited, my uncle was alone at home. I asked what he did. He said he managed, cleaned and served as a guide. As a youth I was curious, so I went to see the victory platform and use the binoculars.Farmers grow potatoes and corn along the border each year, but sowing of seeds will have to wait for rainy season. Life isn’t tense or busy like many other border towns, but the tranquility is broken each Tuesday and Friday when the Korea-Russia cross-border train arrives and undergoes customs inspections. Anne HuFTV News ChiefFrom Tumengang neighborhood you can see the Korea-Russia Bridge, which passes over the border. In the past, Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il’s father, crossed this bridge by train.North Korea founder Kim Il-sung’s fear of flying led him to choose rail transit when visiting the Soviet Union. These journeys from Pyongyang to Moscow contributed to the close historical connection between the countries and paved the way for desperately needed assistance. When North Korea was still a colony of Japan during World War II, Kim Il-sung relied on the Soviet Union for support in his fight of resistance. The Soviet Union provided assistance again in 1945, when the Workers’ Party of North Korea was founded, and on Sept. 9, 1948, when Kim Il-sung founded the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. In the 1950s and 60s, support from the Soviet Union led North Korea to have a rate of industrial development that was second only to Japan in Asia. When the Soviet Union dissolved, this generosity abruptly ended. Desperate for support in the face of international sanctions, as North Korea began to drift away from the Soviet Union, it turned to China. While Russia is still North Korea’s third largest exporter, proportionally it is far behind China, which places first in terms of both exports and imports. The discrepancy is apparent by looking at flight schedules. There is one daily direct round trip flight between Pyongyang and Beijing and no regular direct flights between Pyongyang and Moscow. In terms of the most widely spoken foreign languages in North Korea, Russian trails English and Mandarin.Former StudentKim Il-sung UniversityOf course English is the official language of the world. But in our country, China and Russia are so nearby. So we must study English first, after that we need to study Chinese and Russian as a second foreign language.North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong-un, had chosen Russia as his first foreign state to visit since taking power. While the trip was later cancelled, it still carried important symbolic meaning. Recently, Russia has proposed building a railway that cut across North Korea from north to south and links to the Trans-Siberian Railway. This would provide easy transport of coal, iron, petroleum and natural gas. Early interest from North Korea points toward more opportunity for cooperation in the future. This is FTV’s Anne Hu, Su C. F. and Yeh Chun-hao with an exclusive report from China, North Korea and Russia.

South Korea, located on the peninsula between Japan and China, is a nation of contradictions. You’ll find an ancient culture that goes back thousands of years, bolstered by high-tech industries and glowing modern cities. These elements, seemingly at odds, often mix together to create a truly unique experience.
Your Korea tour begins with Seoul, a mega-city full of theatres, casinos, restaurants, and pubs. If you love shopping, you’re in luck: Korea loves nothing better than offering a chance for some good purchases. Entire districts are devoted to stores, vendors, and malls, so make sure your credit card is ready to go.
If you’re engaging in some sightseeing in Korea, you can’t go wrong with a dedicated visit to the many temples and palaces that dot the country. Many of these sacred locations are adorned with ponds, moats, and trees, allowing you to get back in touch with nature while you explore this nation’s vast history.
Stop by the museums and galleries of your choice to get a taste of the local modern culture. You’ll find fine art, eccentric modern pieces, and everything in between—and best of all, you can stop for delicious Korean food on just about any corner.

It's not about the destination, it's about the company :) Korea was one of the most beautiful countries I've ever experienced. The food, beauty, nature and culture really inspired me. Hope this ignites your wanderlust. xoxo Mish

Vice founder Shane Smith managed to get into North Korea after a year and half of trying and is witness to the craziness of this hermit nation.
Crazy is actually kind of an understatement.

North Korean Labor Camps - VICE NEWS - Part 1 of 7
North Korea has come up with a new way to bring cold hard cash into its isolated country: export North Korean workers to slave away in the Siberian forest (often without telling them they're no longer in North Korea). We set out to investigate these camps and almost landed ourselves in quite a bit of trouble.

Launching Balloons into North Korea: Propaganda Over Pyongyang
