Whether it's talking about the birds and the bees, photosynthesis, or evolution, you'll have a desire to impart knowledge onto impressionable youngsters about how these wonderful bodies of ours operate in and amongst our various environments.

Most biology teachers are secondary school teachers, particularly teachers for years 11 and 12. Teachers are in a classroom environment about 80% of their working time, with the rest of the time taken up by subject preparation, reviewing teaching material and marking papers.

Teachers work up to 50 hours a week, with school hours being 9am to 3:30pm or 4pm, Monday to Friday. Although these seem like long hours, the good news is you get 10 weeks of holiday time each year!

Responsibilities & Skills

As a secondary school biology teacher, it is your responsibility to teach your students the scientific principles, particularly in the field of biology, of the world around them. You need to prepare your students to sit – and pass- the next level of assessments, and to assist them in continuing through to the next stage of education. You also need to instill in your students a genuine passion for learning and biology study.

Skills include:

- Excellent communication skills
- Exceptional organizational skills
- High levels of energy, stamina and motivation to deal with students and long working hours
- Ability to liaise with others on the teaching staff
- Ability to supervise your students

• Bachelor of Science Education
