A design assistant provides support to a team within a company to produce all sorts of material. From marketing and advertising to fashion to media publications. It is a role that requires a lot of creativity and a good eye and flair for design; it also requires the ability to think laterally and artistically and – in most cases – use image editing programs. The most common editing programs used are Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator.

This is either an entry or mid-level role that will allow an individual to gain experience that will help them progress in the field they have chosen. While full creative control is unlikely at this stage, a design assistant will often be expected to contribute to the overall vision of the project. Usually administrative tasks that aid senior members of staff and executives are conducted in the role.

- An ability to work to tight deadlines
- A good grasp of design programs (if the role involves digital production)
- An ability and willingness to work within a team
