Channel 4 News can name a woman journalist as one of the victims in the Sri Lanka execution video along with damning new details of the date and location where the video was filmed. After extensive investigations Channel 4 News can reveal that one of the victims was a high profile member of the Tamil Tigers press and communications wing. Shoba - whose nom de guerre was Isaipriya - was aged 27 when she died, and was identified by a friend speaking on condition of anonymity. The distressing execution video footage, screened by Channel 4 News last week and originating in Sri Lanka, shows a number of incidents of soldiers in uniform shooting in the head people who appear to be unarmed -- described as "cold-blooded killing" by an international expert. The video also shows the bodies of other men and women lying on the ground. Leading war crimes lawyer Julian Knowles, from Matrix Chambers, told Channel 4 News the video was "astonishing evidence" of a type he had only seen "a handful of times" showing the mass killing of civilians or unarmed combatants, a serious war crime. The video was shot towards the end of Sri Lanka's 26-year civil war, which ended in 2009, between the government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) group, known as the Tamil Tigers. Read more from war crimes lawyer Julian Knowles on the 'astonishing evidence' of the Sri Lanka video Channel 4 News can now reveal that one of the victims was a high profile member of the Tamil Tigers -- but her role was as a journalist rather than a direct fighter as a result of a heart condition. Identity of the victim One of the women shown in the video has been identified by a close colleague and friend, speaking to Channel 4 News, as the Tamil journalist, Isaipriya (pictured above). Isaipriya was part of the Tamil Tigers, her former colleague told us. She identified that Isaipriya's body appears in the "war crimes" video, partially covered by a sheet, with cuts to the face. "Isaipriya never carried a gun and her physical condition did not permit her to go to the battlefield." Friend and colleague of Isaipriya She said: "Isaipriya joined the LTTE. Because of her physical condition, she was deployed to the media unit. She was in the production team. She did some acting. She was a TV presenter. She was a dancer. "She never carried a gun and her physical condition did not permit her to go to the battlefield. She always had either a camera, a pen or a notepad." Evidence of who may be responsible While Isaipriya's body is seen in a video which includes footage of executions, it is unclear how she died. The identities of the soldiers - who look directly at the camera at times in the video - are also unclear from the video, although the fact that they speak Sinhalese suggests they are government troops rather than Tamil fighters. However, it has emerged that the date of her death and the soldiers who killed her are both listed on the Sri Lankan Ministry of Defence website, fixing the date of the video more accurately and indicating which troops were active at that time. Sri Lanka infographic The list says she was killed, along with 31 other LTTE leaders, on 18 May 2009 by 53 Division troops, an "offensive" attack force of the Sri Lanka Army commanded by Major General Kamal Gunaratne. The Sri Lanka High Commission told Channel 4 News: "The High Commission of Sri Lanka wishes to reiterate that 'Lt. Col. Issei Piriya' was engaged in a hostile operation against the Sri Lanka Security Forces when she met her end. "Sri Lanka has established the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission the mandate of which is to look into matters relating to the conflict from 2002 to 2009. "The testimony being presented to the Commission by people from all walks of life, especially from the North and from the East is proof of their confidence, in the workings of the Commission. "Therefore, it is important that we allow this domestic mechanism to achieve its objectives." '3 Idiots' triumphs at IIFA Colombo, June 6 -- '3 Idiots' that created history by becoming one of the most successful films in Hindi cinema walked away with 11 trophies at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards here that concluded here with a flourish early Sunday, being declared the Best Film, while the Best Director award went to Rajkumar Hirani and the Best Actress award to Kareena Kapoor for the same movie. Kareena shared the award with Vidya Balan, who was honoured for perfectly portraying the role in 'Paa' of a single mother whose son is suffering from porgeria. Sanjay Dutt, Bollywood's affable Munnabhai, walked away with the Best Comic Actor trophy for his rib-tickling performance in 'All The Best', while Boman Irani received the Best Actor in A Negative Role honour for his brilliant portrayal of an eccentric professor in '3 Idiots'. Sharman Joshi, who played Aamir Khan's friend in '3 Idiots', won the Best Supporting Actor award, while Divya Dutta received Best Supporting Actress honour for her performance in 'Delhi 6′. Sri Lankan actress Jacqueline Fernandez, who made her Bollywood debut with 'Aladin', was declared Star Plus Debut of the Year (Female). Apart from Jacqueline, Mahi Gill, who played the modern age Paro in Anurag Kashap's new interpretation of 'Devdas' titled 'Dev D', too bagged the Star Plus Debut of the Year (Female) award. The footage shows Isaipriya, a celebrity news presenter at a rebel-run television station, half naked and being given a cloth to cover herself by people in military uniform who were heard saying they had found Tamil Tiger rebel leader Velupillai Prabakaran's daughter. Isaipriya, whose body was found at the end of the war on May 18, 2009, is seen telling her captors: "No, I am not her." "This shows the pattern of war crimes that happened in the final days of the war," Macrae told Reuters. "They are not mistreating her and they are attempting to cover her partial nakedness with a cloth, but this footage demonstrates that she was alive and uninjured." While the army disputes the footage, its release, on November 7 in New Delhi, will raise more questions about its actions before the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), on November 15-17. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has declined to attend because of concerns over alleged abuses, while British Prime Minister David Cameron, rejecting calls to boycott the summit, had said he would raise difficult issues at the talks. "They have been releasing fake videos targeting Geneva human rights commission meetings and now they have come out with another fake video targeting CHOGM to discredit the army and Sri Lanka in general," the military spokesman said. Tens of thousands of civilians were killed in 2009 in the final months the war, a U.N. panel has said, as government troops advanced on the ever-shrinking northern tip of the island controlled by Tamil rebels fighting for an independent homeland. The panel said it had "credible allegations" that Sri Lankan troops and the Tamil Tigers both carried out atrocities but said the government was responsible for most of the deaths.

IMF SAYS SRI LANKAN ECONOMY IS IMPRESSIVE Posted on 26 September 2011. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) yesterday stated that in the face of the global downturn, the performance of the Sri Lankan economy has been impressive. IMF Deputy Managing Director Naoyuki Shinohara told the Daily Financial Times that the Sri Lankan economy suffered a lot during the conflict days and now things are different. Foreign capital is coming to Sri Lanka after a long period of conflict. Commenting on foreign investments to Sri Lanka, Shinohara said that the level of foreign capital coming to the country was still low, but insisted that there was huge potential. Sri Lanka needs to improve its business environment further. However, he said they are satisfied with the way the economy is heading." The Deputy Managing Director also noted that the seventh review of the Stand-by Agreement was expected to conclude at the end of the year.

Mr. Pallewatta rakes into the country foreign revenue worth over US $ 25 million annually. In recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Sri Lankan Economy, the Junior Chamber International in 2006 awarded his the most prestigious award "The TOYP" in the category of Business and Entrepreneurial accomplishment. An attorney-at-law by profession, versatile Rohan Pallewatta holds a B.A. (English Special) and has a MBA from the University of Sri Jayawardenapura. He has been a visiting lecturer and an examiner in Business Law from 2000. His most recent appointment is as the director of recently incorporated State Resources Management Corporation. The quality requirement of the product that Mr. Pallewatta manufactures is 1 ppm, which means only a single defect would be tolerated for a million produced. The uniqueness in Rohan's achievement is that this is the first time that Sri Lanka has entered the international market with a 1 ppm quality product. A product of St. Anthony's College, Kandy, Mr. Pallewatta was the Head Prefect in the year 1987. He will be speaking on the topic: "Frog's eggs". Vesak is celebrated as a religious and a cultural festival in Sri Lanka on the full moon of the month of May, for a duration of one week.During this week, the selling of alcohol and flesh is usually prohibited, with abattoirs also being closed. Celebrations include various religious and alms giving activities. Electrically lit pandols called toranas are erected in various locations in Colombo and elsewhere, most sponsored by donors, religious societies and welfare groups. Each pandol illustrates a story from the 550 Jataka Katha or the 550 Past Life Stories of the Buddha. In addition, colourful lanterns called Vesak koodu are hung along streets and in front of homes. They signify the light of the Buddha, Dharma and the Sangha. Food stalls set up by Buddhist devotees called dansälas provide free food and drinks to passersby. Groups of people from various community organisations, businesses and government departments sing bhakti gee or Buddhist devotional songs. Colombo experiences a massive influx of public from all parts of the country during this week.Vesākha (Pali; Sanskrit: Vaiśākha वैशाख) is an annual holiday observed traditionally by Buddhists in the Indian subcontinent, Sri Lanka, and the South East Asian countries of Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Indonesia. Sometimes informally called "Buddha's Birthday", it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment (nirvāɳa), and passing away (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha. The exact date of Vesākha varies according to the various lunar calendars used in different traditions. In Theravada countries following the Buddhist calendar, it falls on the full moon Uposatha day (typically the 5th or 6th lunar month). Vesākha Day in China is on the eighth of the fourth month in the Chinese lunar calendar. The date varies from year to year in the Western Gregorian calendar, but falls in April or May. In 2010 the first full moon day in May is 27 May. However, Myanmar and Cambodia observe the event this year on April 28, 2010. Tradition ascribes to the Buddha himself instruction on how to pay him homage. Just before he died, he saw his faithful attendant Ananda, weeping. The Buddha advised him not to weep, but to understand the universal law that all compounded things (including even his own body) must disintegrate. He advised everyone not to cry over the disintegration of the physical body but to regard his teachings (The Dhamma) as their teacher from then on, because only the Dhamma truth is eternal and not subject to the law of change. He also stressed that the way to pay homage to him was not merely by offering flowers, incense, and lights, but by truly and sincerely striving to follow his teachings. This is how devotees are expected to celebrate Vesak: to use the opportunity to reiterate their determination to lead noble lives, to develop their minds, to practise loving-kindness and to bring peace and harmony to humanity. Popular Sri Lankan band The Islanders performs on the Shaw Community Stage at the 2011 Surrey Fusion Festival at Holland Park, Surrey, BC, Canada on Sunday, July 17, 2011. Members of the band are Eraj (vocals), Nilantha (traditional drums and octopad), Amal (bass), Ryan (lead guitar), Julian (drums), Roshane (guitar) and Roshan (Latin percussion). Despite bad weather and soggy grounds, the two-day festival celebrating music, food and culture attracted over 100,000 people and featured 35 cultural pavilions and over 100 acts on four stages. The 2010 Fusion Festival, which attracted over 90,000 people, won the prestigious Star Award at the 2011 Canadian Event Industry Awards (CEIA) event in Toronto, Ontario. The City was recognized in the category of Best Cultural Event for 2010. Rice, which is usually consumed daily, can be found at any special occasion, while spicy curries are favorite dishes for dinner and lunch. A very popular alcoholic drink is toddy, made from palm tree sap. Arrack is the de-facto distilled national drink. Rice and curry refers to a range of Sri Lankan dishes. Sri Lanka's cuisine mainly consists of boiled or steamed rice served with curry. Another well-known rice dish is Kiribath, meaning "milk rice." Curries in Sri Lanka are not just limited to meat- or fish-based dishes, there are also vegetable and even fruit curries. A typical Sri Lankan meal consists of a "main curry" (fish, chicken, beef, pork or mutton), as well as several other curries made with vegetable and lentils. Side-dishes include pickles, chutneys and "sambols" which can sometimes be fiery hot. The most famous of these is the coconut sambol, made of ground coconut mixed with chillies, dried Maldive fish and lime juice. This is ground to a paste and eaten with rice, as it gives zest to the meal and is believed to increase appetite. In addition to sambols, Sri Lankans eat "mallung", chopped leaves mixed with grated coconut and red onions. Coconut milk is found in most Sri Lankan dishes to give the cuisine its unique flavor. Sri Lanka has long been renowned for its spices. In the 15th and 16th centuries, traders from all over the world who came to Sri Lanka brought their native cuisines to the island, resulting in a rich diversity of cooking styles and techniques. Lamprais--rice boiled in stock with a special curry, accompanied by "frikkadels" (meatballs), all of which is then wrapped in a banana leaf and baked--is a Dutch-influenced Sri Lankan dish. Dutch and Portuguese sweets also continue to be popular. British influences include roast beef and roast chicken. Sri Lankans use spices liberally in their dishes and typically do not follow an exact recipe: thus, every cook's curry will taste slightly different. Furthermore, people from different regions of the island (for instance, hill-country dwellers versus coastal dwellers) traditionally cook in different ways while people of different ethnic and religious groups tend to prepare dishes according to their customs. Although Sri Lankan food is similar to south Indian cuisine in its use of chilli, cardamom, cumin, coriander and other spices, it has a distinctive taste, and uses ingredients like dried Maldive fish which are local to the area. Sri Lankan food is generally much spicier than most South Indian cuisine, and many spicy Sri Lankan preparations are believed to be among the world's hottest in terms of chilli content. There is a liberal use of different varieties of scorching hot chillies such as amu miris, kochchi miris, and maalu miris (capsicum) among others. While native Sri Lankans are born into this cuisine and develop a healthy tolerance to spicy food, many visitors and tourists to the country often find the spiciness excessive. As a result, many local restaurants in developed and tourist areas offer special low-spice versions of local foods to cater to foreign palates, or have an alternative western menu for tourists. It is generally acceptable for tourists to request that the food is cooked with a lower chilli content to cater for the milder Western palette. The chili content in food cooked for public occasions is typically much less than home-cooked food. Hoppers (appa) are another food native to Sri Lanka, served mainly for breakfast or lunch and often accompanied by Lunu miris, a fiery hot mix of red onions and spices. Hoppers are made from a fermented batter of rice flour, coconut milk and a dash of palm toddy, which lends a sour flavor and fermentation ability. If toddy is not available, yeast is often used. The batter is left to rise, then cooked in a hemispherical wok-like pan. There are many types of hoppers including egg hoppers, milk hoppers, and sweeter varieties like vanduappa and paniappa. Koola'ya is a dish made of a variety of leftover curries, mixed together with rice and often served at temples, with chapati. It's also served in a ball form, or even mixed in a blender. Abstract: Sri Lanka, popularly perceived through the contrasting images of a bitter civil war or a beautiful tourist destination, presents yet a third image - an exemplar of how to achieve good health at a low cost. Dr Jones' presentation will analyse the Sri Lankan experience of primary health care from the late colonial period to the Alma--Ata declaration, uncovering how this accolade was achieved and the questions it raises. Sri Lanka's good model of selective primary health care, available through the government health system, formed a sound basis for providing universal health coverage. It is now questionable whether the system will continue to provide affordable care to address the increasing burden of chronic diseases. Dr Perera will discuss the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health's investigation of how the existing primary health, structure together with specialist services, can be reformed to provide universal health access and maintain a safety net for healthcare. Situated amongst verdant tea plantations and at an elevation of 1990 m, Nuwara Eliya is one of the highest and most attractive towns in Sri Lanka’s hill region. Built by English tea growers, it remained their favourite hill station during colonial times. Nuwara Eliya boasts the best golf course in Sri Lanka and is home to the impressive Hakgala Botanical Gardens.

Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya and did White Water Rafting at Kitulgala (AM) vistited the Blue Field Tea Factory (PM) enroute. Day 6: Nuwara Eliya to Ella. We woke up early to walk on the Horton Plains and see World's End before continuing our journey by train in the Observation Car to Ella (I highly recommend this trip!). Day 7: Ella to Yala National Park with a safari in the afternoon. Day 8: Yala to Tangalla Day 8-10: Beach in Tangalla Day 11: Tangalla to Mirissa Day 12: Mirissa to Unawatuna Day 13-14: Unawatuna Day 15: Unawatuna to Galle Day 16: Fly Home! The rebranding is an integral part of the repositioning strategy of Sri Lanka Tourism, and comes at an opportune time with the dawning of a new era of peace in Sri Lanka, where there are much expectations and opportunities in the tourism industry. Managing Director of the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau Dileep Mudadeniya, said The objective of the Sri Lanka Tourism re-branding exercise was to create a single core idea that can change peoples perception of the country. The challenge faced by Sri Lanka Tourism during the brand strategy planning session in 2006 was to find an idea that embraces the truth of the country, which is relevant to the potential visitor; then communicate that idea through every material item produced, thus establishing an integrated marketing communication approach, he said. Sri Lankan tourism industry has a great potential in the future. Sri Lanka climbs Kuoni list of best travel destinations Sri Lanka has climbed the Kuoni list as the 4th best selling travel destination for 2010. Kuoni Travel Ltd is one of the largest travel companies in Switzerland, and also one of the leading travel organisations in the world. It calls itself UK's most successful specialist tour operator. The operator's annual Longhaul Report, which was first published in 1980, reveals the best-selling destinations so far for 2010. While the top three most popular long-haul destinations for Kuoni are Maldives, Thailand and US which held the top places last year, Sri Lanka and Malaysia have moved up the list to fourth and sixth places respectively. China and Hong Kong is a new entry at number eight and Singapore comes in at number 10. Kenya and Mauritius were the destinations to drop out of the top 10 from last year. Kuoni said destinations to watch out for this year include India, Oman, Indonesia and Cuba which are all showing momentum and just sitting outside the top 10. Although Kataragama was a small village in medieval times, today it is a fast-developing township surrounded by jungle in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka. It houses the ancient Kiri Vehera Buddhist stupa. The town has a venerable history dating back to the last centuries BCE. It was the seat of government of many Sinhalese kings during the days of Rohana kingdom. Since the 1950s the city has undergone many improvements with successive governments investing in public transportation, medical facilities, and business development and hotel services.
