New Delhi: Mohammedan Sporting ended their Durand Cup drought after 73 years when they scored a 2-1 victory over ONGC in the final at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Thursday. The last time they won this tournament was in 1940, defeating a British side, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, in the title clash. Watched by 5000-odd loyal supporters, who came to cheer the team armed with club flags and drums, the black-and-white brigade took a firm grip over the match in the first half itself, scoring both goals before the lemon break. While Anthony Soren struck the first after Tolgay Ozebe did all the spadework down the left in the 35th minute, the Australian put his name on the score sheet with a stunning strike from outside the box a minute before the breather. The joy of the Mohammedan Sporting triumph was marred to some extent a few minutes before the final whistle, when their Brazilian defender suffered a dislocation on his right hand while trying to fend off a corner kick in front of his goalmouth. Given the nature of his injury, Luciano could be out for a considerable period during the I-League. In hindsight, the absence of Penn Orji proved to be a blessing in disguise for Mohammedan Sporting. As the tournament rules allowed only two foreigners to play in a match, Mohammedan Sporting had mostly used Penn and defender Luciano, keeping Tolgay and Joshimar on the bench. In the final, however, their coach Abdul Aziz Moshud was forced to play Tolgay after Penn complained of a slight injury. The Aussie striker, who looked slower in the opening tie, took full advantage of the opportunity and emerged as the hero in his team's historic triumph. His goal was a classic, a bullet like shot that crashed against the net leaving goalkeeper Bilifang Narzary dazed. On Thursday, the only time they looked threatened was in the second session with ONGC attacking with renewed vigour. The I-League discards even pulled one back in the 56th minute, when Lavino Fernandes headed in from close after goalkeeper Somnath Khara failed to grip on to a free kick by Asim Hassan. Mohammedan Sporting, however, regrouped well and tokk charge of the midfield. Mohammedan Sporting's victory was a hard fought one. With veteran Jatin Bist controlling the midfield, ONGC swarmed the rival goal area in the initial stage.- published: 20 Sep 2013

United SC defender Bello Rassaq was the player sent off after receiving two yellows but the purple shirts held on for a point. Bolstered by five new signings, Mohammedan Sporting came into this game full of confidence as they grabbed their first win of the season on round five against Rangdajied United. Only two of those new players -- Manish Maithani and Luis Barreto -- were named in the match squad by coach Moshood Bola Abdul Aziz and with the backing of their passionate fans the 122-year-old club made a fast start. Young Collin Abranches and Australian Tolgay Ozbey both tested United SC goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee while at the other end Mohammedan Sporting was looking solid in defence following the return of Brazilian Luciano Sobrosa from injury. The first real opening of the game came when Tolgay got behind the United SC backline but Sangram came out of his goal quickly and cleared the danger. Straight at the other end midfielder Shouvik Chakraborty narrowly missed for United SC. Mohammedan Sporting had a goal disallowed just before the halftime break as Josimar was adjudged to have fouled Rassaq before scoring past Sangram. The second half took time to come alive but United SC slowly started having more possession and then Eric Brown had the best attempt of the match as his left-footed effort from just outside the box hit the bar after taking a touch off Mohammedan Sporting custodian Ashok Singh. Mohammedan Sporting's three foreign attackers -- Penn Orji, Josimar and Tolgay -- were all seeing the ball a lot in key areas but each of them did not fully capitalise either with their final ball or finish. Around the midway point of the second half, United SC's star striker Ranti Martins also started to have a bigger influence on the game as he was starting to link up more with his midfielders. But the game turned in Mohammedan Sporting's favour when Bello was shown his second yellow for a foul on Josimar in the 71st minute. However Mohammedan Sporting failed to capitalise on their numerical advantage with their only genuine opportunity coming when Sangram failed to a collect a cross from Penn but Josimar's effort was cleared off the line by Dhanachandra Singh. United SC defended solidly and could have even got the maximum points as Ranti went agonisingly close with a powerful effort from just outside the box. The result drops United SC to fifth place with the purple shirts are without a win in four matches now while Mohammedan Sporting are 10th with four points from five matches.- published: 31 Oct 2013

Man of the Match Israil Gurng, Tolgay Ozebe and Penn Orji netted a brace each while Dipendu Biswas got one. Police AC were pathetic on the pitch, going down without putting up even a semblance of resistance. And had Mohammedan Sporting players shown more alacrity in front of the goal, the scoreline could have in double figures. "A great win... But the opposition was not good. Still this victory will give confidence before the Churchill Brothers match," coach Abdul Aziz Moshood said after the match. The floodgates opened as early as in the ninth minute. Penn played it to Tolgay whose shot was saved by the Police AC defence. But Gurung latched on to the rebound and his shot entered the goal after taking a deflection off defender Samir Basu. Goal No. 2 came two minutes later. Tolgay, who had a great match, was tripped inside the box by Samir Basu. Referee Barun Saha pointed to the dreaded spot and Tolgay made no mistake in converting the penalty. The Tolgay-Penn combination once again wreaked havoc and this time it was the Nigerian who got his name on the scoresheet. A smart pass from the Australian in the 27th minute and Penn gleefully prodded the ball home. "The movement was very good today (Monday). Modern football is all about movement and today my boys did some good movements. I am not 100 per cent satisfied, but it's no denying the fact that we played good football," Moshood said. The fourth one came in the 33rd. Tolgay's pass found an unmarked Penn who got past an onrushing Police goalkeeper Jhantu Mondal and slotted it home. Four minutes before half-time, Mohammedan Sporting got their fifth and probably the best of the day. Goalkeeper Mondal managed to parry Penn's volley and Tolgay pounced on the rebound and his 20-yard left-footer crashed into the net. Mohammedan Sporting relaxed a bit in the second half. But still got two more. In the 68th minute, Gurung got his second. Latching onto a Gagandeep Singh pass, Gurung lobbed the ball over a hopelessly out of position Mondal. Dipendu hammered the last nail into the Police coffin four minutes before full time. Substitute Sukhdeb Murmu's shot hit the near post and Dipendu was at the right place at the right time to make it 7-0.- published: 19 Nov 2013

Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 Railway FC | Joshimar & Khantang Paite goals!! CFL 2013-14
4 Dec 2013 Credits: Star Sports, Jalsha Movies Calcutta: Joshimar and Khanthang Paite were on target as Mohammedan Sporting beat Railway FC 2-0 victory in a CFL Championship Round match, at the Barasat Stadium, on Wednesday. Both the goals came in the first half itself as Mohammedan Sporting, with this victory, moved up to No. 3 in the league table, having secured 14 points from six matches. Agreed, the opposition was weak. Still, Joshimar's return to form has certainly brought in some relief for coach Abdul Aziz Moshood. Mohammedan Sporting started without key figures like Tolgay Ozebe (hamstring injury), Syed Rahim Nabi, Penn Orji and Ishfaq Ahmed. Tolgay wasn't even in the 18-man squad and so was Nabi. Penn and Ishfaq warmed up after the breather, but their services weren't needed as the likes of Joshimar, Paite and Israil Gurung proved too hot to handle for Railway FC. Joshimar timed his jump to perfection to head home an accurate corner from Paite, taking Mohammedan Sporting ahead in the 17th minute. Paite then got his name on the scoresheet within five minutes. Occupying an ideal position inside the six-yard circle, Paite converted with a left-footer off a Joshimar set-up, after the Brazilian received a long ball to perfection. Throughout the game, Moshood's men were all over their rivals, who tend to concede in bulk whenever they are up against any of the 'Big Three'. It was primarily due to their goalkeeper Ranjit Jana that Railway FC could restrict their opponents to just two goals. Ranjit made three excellent blockings to thwart the attempts of Israil Gurung, Paite and the likes. Towards the end of first half, Joshimar fed Gurung with a wonderful opportunity before Ranjit dived to deflect the right-footer. Soon after, he came up with another save, as on this occasion, it was a Paite header from Ashim Biswas' centre. Mohammedan Sporting, however, were denied a goal as well, late in the second half, as substitute Dipendu Biswas was ruled offside. A header from substitute Ajay Singh came off the crosspiece and Joshimar was quick to slot the rebound home. But Dipendu being clearly offside, referee Uttam Sarkar was spot-on in disallowing the goal. Moshood was pretty satisfied with the team's effort. A convincing win of this type should certainly provide Mohammedan Sporting with an impetus to put up better shows in the I-League, where they haven't found the going to be easy. "For sure, it's a pleasing victory... No doubt about it. Importantly, we won this game despite the absence of some of our star players. Players, who got the opportunity today, ensured they stood up and made themselves counted. It was really good to see the youngsters deliver. "Moreover, performances such as these provide a balanced look to our team and create more options, too. We don't have to rely on the same XI time and again," the coach emphasised. Moshood didn't want to look back at the events that threatened troubled times for his team after a barren draw with Dempo last week. "That is past. I don't want to look back. I just want the team to keep on playing well. That's my goal. I've taken up this coaching job to help the club gain more and more success. At the end of the day, I need to make sure the team is successful because success is what matters," he elaborated. Talking about Tolgay's absence, Moshood said: "He is carrying an injury. The physio has advised him a five-day rest. I'm confident he'll recover fast."- published: 11 Dec 2013

Mohammedan Sporting's comeback match vs Bhowanipore Club | CFL 2013-14
Credits : News Time, telegraphindia.com Calcutta: Mohammedan Sporting begin their CFL Premier Division Super 12 campaign on Monday when they take on Bhowanipore Club, at the Salt Lake Stadium. Mohammedan Sporting have recruited some top-quality and effective foreign players along with a good bunch of Indian players. The team also had a very good pre-season training under new coach Moshood Abdul Aziz. But the real test of the season comes on Monday. Moshood, on Sunday morning, said that he would like to see his boys play good football so that they can set the tone for the season. "A winning start is always important. But I also want my team to play attractive football," he said. With only two foreigners allowed in the starting XI, plus Mohammedan Sporting's commitment to participate in the Durand Cup, Moshood has a decision to make as to which foreigners he would field amongst Tolgay Ozbey, Penn Orji, Luciano Sabrosa and Joshimar. He was not ready to reveal anything about it but it is likely that the last two from that group will start, with Tolgay coming on in the later stages. So Indian players, like captain R Dhanarajan, Collin Abranches and Jerry Zirsanga, need to put in their best performance to help their team. "We had a very good pre-season... Hopefully we will log full points on Monday. I am ready, but I do not know if I will get a start. There will be no duel with (Jose Ramirez) Barreto," Tolgay Ozebe said on Sunday. Mohammedan Sporting's defence doesn't look that impressive. Barring Luciano and Dhanarajan, the backline is short in talent. Bhowanipore, on the other hand, will have to depend a lot on Barreto if they are to pull off a shock win. The former Mohun Bagan captain played a crucial role in their game against George Telegraph on Saturday by scoring twice, which enabled them to come back from a goal down and win 2-1.- published: 09 Sep 2013
