Mary Peterman: The air becomes charged with electricity around desperate men.
Lawrence 'Rip' Smith: I've been searching for a town like this for years. You know, when I got off that train this morning, I said to myself "This is it." I've just walked through your town, folks, with its shade trees and its lovely parks. I stood before your impressive buildings mellowed with age, and I said to myself "Here is a sturdy challenge to the evils of the modern era." I watched your people on the street, and I felt their vitality and their sense of security. Your children are happy. They're happy. You can see it in their dear little faces, and hear it in their wholesome talk. There's beauty here. It's almost indescribable. You're used to it, you're all a part of it, you take it for granted. But to me, it's a hope and a dream of a lifetime. I too want to become a part of it. Please don't change it. [addressing a meeting of the Grandview city council]

The Best of West Ireland: Dingle, Galway and the Aran Islands
Deepest Ireland is best experienced on its west coast, in the Gaeltacht — where the people speak Gaelic and the rugged villages have changed little over the generations. After exploring the rugged and remote Aran Islands, we settle into Galway, chase a friendly dolphin, and delve into Ireland in the extreme, along the Dingle Peninsula. Ringing with traditional music from its rustic pubs and dotted

The Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, Ireland, has to be one of the most spectacularly beautiful places on Earth. Way, way back on a wet and windy December night in 2006, Amy Winehouse stepped onto the tiny stage of the tiny Church of Saint James and sang her heart out for about twenty minutes. Then she went over to Benner's Hotel and spoke with John Kelly about life and love (a bit) and music (a lot) for another fifteen minutes or so. And then she went home. She was only in Dingle for three or four hours but even at the time we knew it had been pretty magical. And so did Anthony Wall, the Grand High Poobah at the BBC's Arena division. And he gave us the wherewithal to make this documentary about that day. And then it was shown back in the church at the Dingle Film Festival, which was special. And then it opened the East End Film Festival in London (shown in another church). And then it was released on DVD. And now it has been nominated for Best Arts Documentary in the very prestigious Grierson Awards. Brilliant. But you'd swap it all for one more encore mind...

Friends, family, and all others whom watch my videos, or i have met along the way as i journey through life....I pray for all of you whom have yet to join with Christ to be able to reconnect, then your senses can also become opened to the real truths that lay all around us- and so self healing's can occur as true freedoms found. Please try remember we were born all knowing that Jesus Christ saved us, and continues to save. He is my personal Saviour and guide through life, as he can be everyone else's too, all you need to accept him into your heart as the perfect man for us to aspire towards, and Son of God, sacrificed so we could be cleansed of our sins, and grow in our life's through establishing a personal relationship with him... He was gifted for us by our Father, and he is the way to the truth and light. Everything we need in order to thrive both here, and after the death of our flesh, lays in knowing Jesus now... I share my own life lessons, and express what i can, as i can, but all i know, i know because of Christ and healing through him, as he leads me back away from lies, deceptions, misconceptions and programming, to the truth, protection and love that heals me more with each passing day. I like most of us was Spiritually Abused, and at times so lost, but nothing is beyond the healing and love of Christ. We don't need corrupt church structures, we just need to know Jesus himself, this is our way to winning this war within which we live now, and an eternity worth having ... O:)
'For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" Ephesians 6:12 ..
John Chapter 1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 3:16-17
16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17: For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
Thank you Jesus for protecting & guiding us.

The Dingle Peninsula in Kerry, Ireland, has to be one of the most spectacularly beautiful places on Earth. I was warned the weather was not going to be great this week, but as it turned out the sea mist that so regularly shrouds the headland at this time of year made the whole place seem even more ethereal than usual. The only downside was not being able to see the mountain tops or even to get the opportunity of viewing the scenery from the top of Mount Brandon. Down below, however, the sea was just something else, and since it was still pretty humid, it was a delight to swim in, even though I was slightly lumbered with my camera equipment and my car etc.
I stayed at the Benners Hotel in Dingle, the oldest hotel in the town, which is the most westerly town in mainland Europe. It's right in the centre of town, with great staff, service and most importantly a vibrant bar area. Having travelled for two days beforehand and slept in a tent the night before, I was particularly pleased at the great night's sleep, and even more so at the enormous breakfast I hovered the next morning to prepare myself for a day of filming along the Dingle.
It took me most of a day to get from Dingle to Slea Head (00:52), mainly because I was compelled to stop literally every 200 metres to take another clip of the magnificent views. Unfortunately, when I got to Dunquin, it started really heaving it down with rain, so sloped into a Youth Hostel at the top of the road opposite the very informative Blaskets Interpretive centre. The Blaskets are a group of islands just off Dunquin where a community lived until 1953 who spoke only Irish language. In the 1930's a group of people from the Island emigrated en masse to Springfield MA, and by 1950 only 25 people remained. The Dingle Peninsular, and Connemara are only two places in Ireland where you can now find Irish spoken as a first language.
On speaking to the landlady at the Hostel, we got on to the subject of Ryan's Daughter, the masterpiece of a film by David Lean, which was filmed around Dunquin in the late 1960's. As it happened, the road running alongside the hostel, was literally at the foot of the hill where a village was specially made for the film, and what's the more the old school house, now derelict, stood just half a mile away in the other direction. The next morning, I rose early to walk up to find this location, only to find the track, the elevation of the road I remember so clearly from the film, a few foundations and lots of sheep. There is barely anything left. The view up there was incredible though. I then moved on to the old school house (04:10), which sits right on the edge of a cliff with walls in good condition, but sadly with its tiles all blown off. The main giveaway was the modern mortar in the walls, the breeze blocks inside and a few pipes, but other than that, I could get myself in a position where I could remember the scenes of Michael (Sir John Mills) and the priest Trevor Howard emerging from the gate. At 07:30am it felt magical, and yet so few people came here.
At the foot of the hill is the beach where they filmed the gun running scene, when Leo McKern nearly lost his life while running into the water to grab boxes of ammunition. You will notice the path on the way down to the beach (04:55) and a few of the rock formations, but note that other beaches were also used for this scene, including Inch beach (05:15) further back along the Peninsula, now a surfers paradise.
The rest of the drive around the peninsula was equally awe-inspiring with a number of sites I hope to visit the next time, which will happen in 2012 if all goes well.
My thanks go to the Muireann, the Manager of the Benners Hotel, Catherine Murphy at Fastnet Lines and to Tom at Glidecam who sent one of their excellent products to me in time for this trip.

Travel video about destination The Dingle Peninsula in Ireland.
The Dingle Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland is well known as one of the country’s most scenic locations. It is also a region with a fascinating history and the origin of its villages and farms date back to Early Christian and even prehistoric times. The fifteen hundred inhabitants of tiny Dingle Town have for generations been closely associated with the sea. Although today’s fishing industry is not what it once was, the fishing harbour still plays a vital role in the lives of the local people. Due to tourism the pubs of Dingle Town are kept well busy, however, compared with other parts of Ireland tourism here is a far more subdued affair. In Dingle Town in 1984 a dolphin appeared just off the coast and it accompanied the fishing boats into the harbour and indeed it still does and the Dingle Dolphin is now a well known attraction on this part of the coast. The Dunbeg Fort originated in the Bronze Age. Archaeology has shown that it dates back to the eighth century B.C. The magnificent location of the fortress hundreds of metres above the thundering sea and mighty cliffs make the visit to Dunbeg Fort a dramatic adventure. Close to Fahan is a large group of Beehive Huts, ancient circular buildings that date back to the Last Ice Age. According to archaeologists further buildings were erected in early Christian times. Its mysterious prehistoric and early Christian monuments as well as the beauty of its landscape have given the Dingle Peninsula the magic that has rightly made The Emerald Isle famous throughout the world!

In the early winter of 2012, I spent nine days trudging from field to field and tower to tower in Southwest Ireland. My trip was based in the Mizen Peninsula in West Cork. Along the way, I visited Castledonovan, Toormore, attempted to have tea with Jeremy Irons at his Kilcoe Castle, got lost down beautiful country roads, scaled the walls to visit the ruins of Rossbrin Castle and Raheen Castle near Rineen. I also spent a fantastic day exploring the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry. While there I visited Inch Beach, Minard Castle, the Dunbeg Promontory Fort, Coumeenoole Beach, Gallerus Oratory and Kilmalkedar Monastery. I finished my nine days in West Cork exploring an old estate and castle in Downeen near Rosscarbery, Coppinger's Court, the ancient Drombeg Stone Circle and braved the "lady of the lake" at Three Castle Head. Please join me on this fantastic tour of one of the most amazing places on earth.
"As Robert Frost Once Said..."
Over the coming weeks, I will be sharing my personal thoughts, practical ideas and historical facts about my most recent trip to West Cork. On this particular trip, I was by myself as I explored many sites in the West Cork area that over time have largely been forgotten. I also spent a very long day seeing Dingle. I will be telling the story using my words and photographs. I make no claims of being Mark Twain or Ansel Adams, but I will do my best to create an image that captures the magic of West Cork.
The title of this series is "Nine Days in the Mud." I know it's not a very original considering I was in Ireland for nine days in late November and early December but "Road to West Cork" sounded too Bing and Bob.
Planning for this trip started like most when I'm traveling without my wife and kids. I travel a great deal for work and adding that extra week away from the family is sometimes hard to reconcile in my mind. Shawn, my wife, keeps assuring me that it is fine. I grumble about feeling bad for leaving them "yet again" for the sake of "having fun." Ultimately, the cycle is broken, and I head to the Aer Lingus website to purchase my ticket. There's no turning back now. On the evening of November 25, I'm headed to Ireland!
With two days to spare, I decided to get my trip planned. I don't want to be over prepared! I grabbed my books, my ordinance maps and a cup of coffee. It was reminiscent of an old war movie with a grizzled general studying the map table determining his strategy. One book in particular was very helpful. It was written by Jack Roberts and is called "Exploring West Cork: The Guide to Discovering the Ancient, Sacred and Historic Sites of West Cork." The book details so many "lost" places in West Cork and gives a general idea of where they're located. From here, I would go to my collection of Ordnance Survey Ireland maps to find the exact location. I paged through the book marking places of interest and then marked them with color coded Post-its. My maps were painted with rainbows of Irish fun, and I was basking in the organized glow of the German part of my ancestry. With a plan in place, I was ready to go.
Before I end, I have to get something off my chest. This is a note (and the practical information portion of this program) for those of you who have never been to Ireland. ALL Irish tourist sites and brochures lie. Every one of them. Without exception. Scandalous words I know.
Here's my point before I'm taken out back and made to eat my words. You look at all this material, and what do you see? You see people in shirtsleeves enjoying the sites while basking in the sun. Oh sure, some of the photos have a bit of cloud cover and people wearing jackets. However, they never show the days, and there are lots of them, when it's extremely windy and raining sideways. Just once, I'd like to see a mass of miserable tourists huddled around a small fire attempting to raise their temperature to "pleasantly frozen." A lot of places in the world claim to have four seasons in one day. Ireland does this regularly, beautifully and without fanfare!
So. What did Robert Frost say?
From his poem "The Road Not Taken":
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Let's take that less traveled road. You never know who or what you'll meet.

Meet the locals as the Overlander travels around Ireland - Complete Program
See the beauty and hospitality of Ireland, through the eyes of it's people.
Stories include:
In Dublin I interviewed Niamh Ni Mhir who works for Hostel World,a local IT business that rode the Celtic Tiger to become the biggest Hostel booking website online Niamh explains how Ireland has changed since my last visit, in the early 1990 s and also tells us what it is she likes about living in Dublin.
I interview Kathleen Moran about the Kilkenny Craft Centre and how Kilkenny established itself as Ireland's craft capital.
In Belfast I interviewed Sean McKernan, a photographer who in 1983 set up a photo exhibition called Belfast Exposed, featuring a lot of images from the height of the troubles.
On the Aran Islands I interviewed Teresa Millane, an old style (Sean Nos) singer.
In Galway I interviewed actor Diarmuid de Faoite about the flourishing arts scene.
The small fishing Village of Dingle on the West Coast of Ireland is home to a friendly Dolphin called Fungi, who seems to prefer the company of humans to his own kind.
In Doolin I interviewed Banjo player, Kevin Griffin about why Doolin has become the traditional music capital of Ireland.
Sean now runs an multifunction arts centre called BX Arts.
Sean discusses how Belfast has changed since the 1997 ceasefire.
In Cork I try and trace my Irish ancestors (O'Shea), and look at the modern day immigration of Polish workers to Ireland.
For my final Irish story, I visit Cahersiveen where there are some Stone Forts that may well been the home of my Shea ancestors.

Dingle Peninsula, dotted with more than 2,000 monuments dating back to 4000 b.c., sorts out some of Ireland's ancient and complex history. The soil, itself, reveals the struggles of the Irish people, where, patch by patch, they created fertile fields for potatoes. We stayed overnight in Kilorglin, Killarney, and Kilkenny, and Limerick.
#Ireland is very charming and enchanting! I must return! It reminded me a lot of #Alaska and of #Oregon.
DO NOT FORGET THAT THEY DRIVE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE ROAD THAT THE AMERICANS DO!!!! I nearly got into a wreck 10 minutes after picking up the rental car in Cork !!!!!

The Dingle Peninsula is a finger of mountainous land surrounded by the sea and extends westward from Tralee toward the Atlantic. Voted among the Top 100 destinations in the world by Trip Advisor and referred to as 'the most beautiful place on earth' by National Geographic, its landscape is composed of soaring mountain-tops, gentle hillside, secluded lakes, sweeping valleys, ancient ruins, dramatic sea-cliffs, charming ocean coves and long sandy beaches. This book takes you off the beaten track and explores this stunning landscape in a variety of walking routes ranging from short hikes to full day treks. From the wild extremities of the Great Blasket Island to the majestic heights of Brandon and the comfort of The Dingle Way – there’s something to suit everyone’s taste.
Each route is prefaced with a reference summary and is illustrated with sketch maps and clear photographs. Route descriptions also include GPS coordinates, navigation guidance, access notes and shorter variations. There is also material on the fauna, flora, folklore, history, geology and place-names of each area. It is the most comprehensive and up-to-date guide available.
