The Chinese characters for Hakka (客家) literally means "guest families". The Hakka's ancestors were often said to have arrived from what is today's central China centuries ago. In a series of migrations, the Hakkas moved, settled in their present locations in southern China, and then often migrated overseas to various countries throughout the world. The worldwide population of Hakkas is about 80 million, though the number of Hakka-language speakers is fewer. Hakka people have had a significant influence on the course of Chinese and world history: in particular, they have been a source of many revolutionary, government, and military leaders.

Singapore former PM Lee Kuan Yew passes away at age of 91
Lee Kuan Yew, former prime minister of Singapore, died at 03:18 on Monday at the age of 91, according to a statement released by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) on Monday.
Lee passed away "peacefully", the statement said.
Lee had been in hospital for severe pneumonia since Feb. 5. The PMO said his condition had "slightly improved" on Feb. 28, but then worsened due to an infection on March 17. His condition had remained "critically ill" until PMO issued a statement at noon on Saturday, saying that his condition had again "worsened".
Lee's ill health had prevented him from attending public and constituency events in recent months. His latest appearances were at the People's Action Party's 60th anniversary celebrations in November last year and his constituency's Tree Planting Day earlier the same month.
As a MP for Tanjong Pagar Group Representation Constituency (GRC), he also attended Tanjong Pagar GRC's National Day dinner in August 2014.
Lee, also known as Singapore's founding father, was born in September 1923. He served as the prime minister of Singapore from 1959 to 1990, and later served as a senior minister and ministerial mentor after stepping down from the first chair.

How Communism Failed in the Soviet Union and China: Economic Systems Explained (1990)
How Communism Failed in the Soviet Union and China: Economic Systems Explained (1990) The state ideology of the Soviet Union embodied a number of different theoretical streams, originating primarily from within the Marxist ideology of socialism, but with some minor threads emerging from within the Russian revolutionary movement such as the ideology of the Left Socialist-Revolutionaries or from within anarcho-communism such as Makhnovism. After 1921, Russian-developed social-democratic ideologies predominated within the ideology of Soviet communism. Subsequent to Stalin, some changes occurred in Soviet Ideology. Chief amongst these were Nikita Khrushchev's advocacy of developing quality in preference to quantity in Soviet development and the pursuit of peaceful coexistence; and the declaration of the Brezhnev doctrine. During the 1940s 1950s and 1960s numerous experiments were made in political or organisational issues within Soviet communist framework in Eastern European actually existing socialist states, though there was little systematic creative ideological work conducted by State-supporting mainstream Marxists, the dissenting Marxists tending to produce new ideological material outside of the Soviet communist traditions. However, Imre Nagy's humanist socialism and Alexander Dubcek's socialism with a human face were developments of Soviet communist ideologists. Towards the end, Mikhail Gorbachev introduced new innovations in political life which were perceived by some to indicate ideological change. In 1985, Gorbachev announced that the Soviet economy was stalled and that reorganization was needed. Initially, his reforms were called uskoreniye (acceleration) but later the terms such as glasnost (liberalisation, opening up) and perestroika (restructuring) became more popular. The Communist Party of China (CPC), commonly referred to as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), is the founding and ruling political party of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Although nominally it exists alongside the United Front, a coalition of governing political parties, the CPC is the only party allowed to govern the PRC. Through this position the CPC maintains a unitary government and a centralized control over the state, military, and media. The legal power of the Communist Party is guaranteed by the national constitution. The current party leader is Xi Jinping, who holds the title of General Secretary of the Central Committee. The party was founded in July 1921 in Shanghai. After a lengthy civil war, the CPC defeated Republic of China Armed Forces and assumed full control of mainland China by 1949. The government of Republic of China retreated to the island of Taiwan, where it still holds power to this day. Both before and after the founding of the PRC, the CPC's history is defined by various power struggles and ideological battles, including destructive socio-political movements such as the Cultural Revolution. At first a conventional member of the international Communist movement, the CPC broke with its counterpart in the Soviet Union over ideological differences in the 1960s. The Communist Party's ideology was redefined under Deng Xiaoping to incorporate principles of market economics, and the corresponding reforms enabled rapid and sustained economic growth. The CPC is the world's largest political party, claiming over 82,6 million members at the end of 2012.[1] Since 1978, the Communist Party has institutionalize transitions of power and consolidates its internal structure. The modern party stresses unity and avoids public conflict while practicing democratic centralism. Following the death of Mao in 1976, however, the CPC under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping moved towards Socialism with Chinese characteristics and instituted Chinese economic reform.[4] In reversing some of Mao's extreme-leftist policies, Deng argued that a socialist country and the market economy model were not mutually exclusive. While asserting the political power of the Party itself, the change in policy generated significant economic growth.[5] The ideology itself, however, came into conflict on both sides of the spectrum with Maoists as well as progressive liberals, culminating with other social factors to cause the 1989 Tiananmen Square Protests. Deng's vision for economic success and a new socialist market model became entrenched in the Party constitution in 1997 as Deng Xiaoping Theory. Chinese authorities have asked sites and apps which monitor air pollution in Beijing to stop using data provided by the US embassy, say media reports.
Beijing is currently hosting a high-profile gathering of world leaders from the Asia-Pacific bloc of countries.
In an attempt to have clearer skies for the summit, factories have been shut down and cars barred from the roads.
Many Beijingers use apps and sites to check pollution readings, including levels of dangerous PM2.5 particles.
The city, which is often engulfed in a thick blanket of haze reaching well beyond healthy levels, had clear blue skies for the days leading up the summit.
However on Monday as world leaders met for bilateral talks, our correspondents reported there was smog in the capital again.
Most apps and sites provide a daily reading from both the city government and the US embassy reading. The US reading is considered by many to be more reliable and often shows a higher pollution count.
Beijing-air.com posted a notice on its website saying it had "received instructions from authorities saying that this month's air quality readings will be based only on what is released by the Beijing environmental protection bureau".
Fresh-Ideas Studio, which is the developer of a popular pollution-tracking app, told AFP news agency that Beijing city officials had asked that US embassy data be removed.

With just 48 hours to explore Singapore we tried to cram in as many attractions as we possibly could.
Welcome to Singapore! We've got less than 48 hours in the city and we're going to show you as much as we possibly can.
With limited time ticking down to visit the world's most prosperous city state and busiest port, we set out on foot, bus, subway and boat to cover as much ground as we possibly could.
Singapore has often been given the title of a sterile Utopia; however, after traveling around chaotic Southeast Asian hubs like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Saigon it was a welcome relief to visit a mega city that was clean, orderly, spacious and pedestrian friendly.
One of the top highlights was visiting the various districts including Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam.
Hopping on a traditional bum boat offered a unique perspective of the city as we were able to learn more about its colorful history on our guided tour.
One of the highlights was drinking Singapore Slings at the Raffles Hotel where the drink was invented. Paying 27 Singapore dollars allowed us to sip on this wonderful cocktail and throw peanuts on the floor.
Generally speaking, I'm a proponent of slow travel. Traveling slow allows you to live more like a local as opposed to racing around a city like a tourist; however, with just 48 hours in Singapore we were forced outside of our comfort zone, for a couple of days, and we ended up loving it.
The fast paced (and futuristic) elements of the city were conducive to our mission of seeing as much as we possibly could in such a short period of time.
With mere hours as opposed to days to explore the city we set out on foot, by bus and via boat to explore as much of the city as possible.
Although we visited many of the main attractions it was our time spent wandering around neighborhoods such as Kampong Glam (the historic Malaysian quarter) that were my favorite moments in the city.
As one of the most livable cities in all of Asia it is also one of the most expensive. If in the future I had a high paying position I would consider coming to Singapore as an expat as opposed to being just a tourist.
Singapore is impressive by day but really shines at night. Many of the standout landmarks have a completely different look when the sun goes down and the bright lights of the city emerge.
When it comes to street food Singapore ranks favorably with Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. Hawker centres offer up a spread of Asian delights that were heavy on flavor while being light on our wallet.
In order to cover as much ground as possible we purchased hop on hop off bus tickets to get around the city. Being able to get on and off whenever we wanted was a real bonus as it helped us preserve our walking legs.
Although we saw many of the most popular attractions such as Merlion, Marina Bay and the Fullerton Hotel it was the adventures we had wandering around that formed the greatest impressions of the city.
Overall, our time in Singapore was distinctly memorable. Hopefully, we'll have a chance to come back again soon to explore more of this impressive 21st century city state.
This is part of our Travel in Singapore series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Singaporean culture, Singaporean arts, Singaporean foods, Singaporean religion and Singaporean people.

Singapore is a city of gardens and the heart of South East Asia. Its history began in 1819 with Thomas Stamford Raffles, a young official who worked for the British East India Company. Raffles estimated that the natural harbor was perfect for trading ships, so he bought the land from the Sultan of Johor and founded a trading settlement.
As a free port, Singapore attracted trading ships from all over the world and today, 4 million people live here on an area that covers 640 square kilometres.
In June each year, there is an exciting boat race in Marina Bay known as the Dragon Boat Race, that features magnificently painted dragon boats with hand-carved heads and tails accompanied by the sound of frenetic drumbeats.
Dating back to colonial times, British influence is omnipresent, whether the Cricket Club or the Parliament, traditional English spirit rules despite Singapore's Independence.
The World Famous Raffles Hotel is situated in the Colonial District near the Singapore River. In the hotel's Ashanti Bar, it was customary to throw expired peanut shells directly onto the floor and at the same time, reverently sip a Singapore Sling, the national drink.
The Singapore Zoo is one of the finest in the world in which the animals can roam freely, their territory being surrounded by a landscaped ditch. Approximately 2,800 animals live in the spacious enclosures and even those from the world's coldest regions can be observed both below and above water, thanks to cleverly designed viewing areas.
A complete mix of ethnic cultures, there's Chinatown, Little India and the Arab Street Quarter in which there are mosques, women wear burqas and there is all the hustle and bustle of a bazaar.
Singapore is an exotic city of skyscrapers, a cultural melting pot and the exciting gateway to South East Asia!

Singapore Travel Guide: Sentosa, Clark Quay, and Dim Sum! 2015
This is what you can do in a day in Singapore: Visit Sentosa in the morning. Sentosa is an island that contains man made beaches and lots of family fun activities. It's easily worth half a day or maybe a full day if you go to Universal Studios. Getting there from the city center is quite easy as it's connected easily through Singapore's public transportation services. While there, be sure to eat some delicious coconut ice cream- perfect for the hot and humid days in Singapore. Then, catch some lunch at any of the city state's fabulous food courts. Check out Clark Quay before dark so you can take a river boat tour to see the skyscrapers and the Merlion from a different vantage point. You might also learn a little history too. Then, sip some drinks while people watching to enjoy Clark Quay at night. It's really charming and quaint when the sun sets. For dinner, check out some dim sum on Jalan Besar road or any other place in Singapore. I promise you'll love it.

The New Russia: Life After the Introduction of Economic Shock Therapy (1996)
New Russians (Novye Russkie, Russian: новые русские) is a term for the newly rich business class in post-Soviet Russia. It is perceived as a stereotypical caricature. According to the stereotype, New Russians achieved rapid wealth by using criminal methods during Russia’s chaotic transition to a market economy.
Having a modest education and social background, New Russians are perceived as arrogant nouveau riche and gaudy, conspicuous consumers with poor taste. Money and status symbols are prominently displayed by the New Russian, in particular jewelry and luxury cars. In the early 1990s, prominent attributes of the New Russian stereotype also included mobile phones and crimson jackets. A wide range of elite restaurants and nightclubs catering to the New Russian social circle have sprung up in Moscow.
Private entrepreneurship was, for the first time after a long break (from the time of the post-revolutionary New Economic Policy), allowed in the USSR in the midst of the Perestroika, in the form of sole proprietorships and cooperatives, as decreed in November 1986.[5] From this decree began a first phase of activity of new Russian entrepreneurship, when only a few were opening businesses, because it initially caused mass condemnation of others. Entrepreneurs of the first wave opened essentially shallow businesses in catering or trading and were called "cooperatives".
The second wave was towards the end of the Perestroika period (1989-1991). Representatives of the second wave strove to prove themselves in business, not thinking about its economic component. In these three years entrepreneurship even involved high-ranking government officials. In sparse forms businesses became numerous banks, exchanges, and joint ventures. In this period, cooperations began to accept the form of business of the Western type along with all of the corresponding attributes; offices with "open space" floor plans, organizational technology, business style clothes and appearances and so forth.
In this period the expression "New Russian" did not yet have any positive or negative connotation, appearing as the title of a continuation of the series of books "Russians", written about life in the USSR in the 1970s by journalist Hedrick Smith in his description of his repeated visit to the country at the end of the 80s.
The third phase began after the year 1991, and it was called a massive enterprise. The collapse of the socialist system got to such a point that the number of entrepreneurs grew (sometimes forcibly so, after massive firings) multiple times, and then it was not only enthusiasts and passionaries, but also those who went into business out of the struggle to survive and possibly attain wealth.[2]
Head scientist at Institute of Sociology RAN Renald Simonian, noting, that "New Russians" exist as offspring of the , giving them the following characteristics: "Physically robust, undereducated, pushy, deprived of moral inhibitions, and materially wealthy type".
Characteristic attributes of 1990s are considered:
Red or crimson jacket - distinguishing style of clothes for "cool/funky" (крутой) people, status symbol (likewise a symbol of tastelessness), black jeans of a popular brand, steel-toed black boots. In the words of the gameshow player Andrei Kozlov from "What? Where? When?", New Russians began wearing crimson jackets namely after their appearance on this gameshow.[7]
Massive gold chains around the neck ("golda"), gold chains worn outside.
A weighty gold signet ring ("nut")
Large watches ("cauldrons") of an expensive brand, preferably gold-plated and with expensive stones
The automobile: Mercedes-Benz 600 model with the W140 body ("six-hundredth Mers", "600th Merin", "Suitcase", "Bandit", "Boar", "the one-fourty"), Jeep Grand Cherokee ("Chirik", "Cherkan", "Jeep", "Zhyp", "Cherokez", and the close-pair Широкий "Wide"), Nissan Terrano ("Tiranka"), Mitsubishi Pajero ("Podzhary", a play on the Russian word for fire, пожар). Toyota Land Cruiser ("Cruzak", and "Kukurzer" a play on the Russian word for corn), Mercedes Geländewagen ("Gelik", "Cubic"), Chevrolet Tahoe ("Coffin"), Volvo 940, Mercedes-Benz W124, BMW 5, Audi 100, BMW 7, Lincoln Town Car
Mobile phone (труба "trumpet/pipe/tube", "mobila", сотовик "celly"), until the beginning of the 2000s, considered an item of luxury and prestige
A buzz cut or shaved head or back-of-the-head («репа» "turnip")
The "sign of the horns hand" gesture, with or without thumb extended ("fingers", "fingering", "finger goat").
Use of New Russian jargon (words such as "like-a", "in nature", "cleanly", "concretely", "anyway", and so on). Thief-cant.
"Cabbage" - wads of cash in US dollars, or money in general ("bucks", "babki", "bablo", "green", "lave")

Singapore Travel Guide

Singapore Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Small and heavily populated, Singapore is an easy place to explore; nothing in the city is more than an hour from the business district. Thanks to modern construction and outstanding architecture, Singapore is rapidly becoming a powerhouse trade city, but it maintains ties to its Asian roots through traditional temples and many cultural hotspots, like Little India and Kampong Glam.
Your Singapore tour must include the Botanical Gardens and Orchid Gardens, both beautiful and notable places to visit. If you’re a fan of exotic animals, stop by the Singapore Zoo and check in with its 300-plus species that take up residence there. You can also take a “bumboat” from Changi Beach to Pulau Ubin, set away from the bustling city, and delight in its quiet mangroves.
No Singapore sightseeing is complete without a visit to Marina Bay, a glowing, high-tech vision of the future, or Orchard Road, which boasts enough shopping to keep you occupied for several rainy afternoons.

Travel video about destination Singapore.

The New Russia: Life After the Introduction of Economic Shock Therapy (1996)
