Notable Quotable

"The sole end for which mankind are warranted, individually or collectively, in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number, is self-protection...  [The] only purpose for which  power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others.  His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant... Over himself, over his own body and mind, the individual is sovereign."

John Stuart Mill

NEW:  Whose "Liberty"?  Whose "Freedom"?   When the right-wing politicians and corporate media talk of "liberty” and “freedom,” remember this: Your "liberty" and “freedom” are not what they are talking about.  And that's not just "theory," that's history.

I focus below on corporate behavior since corporations are far and away the most significant "players" in both national and multi-national economic activity.

NEW:  It's the Stupid, Stupid. The U.S., in the past few years having virtually exited from wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, has now initiated a new, two-headed war in Syria and Iraq. Have we learned nothing from the quagmire campaigns in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan? Behaving this way is the very definition of "stupid."

REPRISE:
Letter to European Friends: Understanding "The Stupid" in U.S. Politics.  To understand how and why the U.S. behaves ignorantly at times in its foreign policy, it helps to understand the crazy in domestic politics. A primer on how we got to today's partisan warfare and what can be done about it. (First published October 16, 2013)
