Wide of Barhoum being interviewed STORYLINE As reconciliation talks between rival Palestinian factions Hamas and Fatah go on in Yemen, so far no clear outcome has been reached. Residents of Gaza have expressed hope that their leaders would agree and unite the peoples of Palestine. In a news conference held by teenage Palestinian girls in Gaza city, more pressure was put on the Palestinian leadership to reach an agreement. "We call on you, all those responsible people from Fatah and Hamas who meet in beloved Yemen, to stop the internal fighting and to unite and unite all the Palestinian people," said one of the girls. On Thursday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party and the militant Hamas movement accused each other of sabotaging the talks. But Abbas told a news conference on Friday that the two sides have agreed to keep the talks in the Yemeni capital San'a going through Saturday, at the request of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh. The people of Gaza had been under Hamas rule since a violent take over in June 2007, while the West Bank is ruled by Abbas' Fatah party. The takeover by Hamas, has dramatically deepened the hardship in Gaza, which is isolated internationally and under an Israeli and Egyptian blockade. Hopes are that an agreement between Fatah and Hamas will bring better prospect to the people of Gaza, as it could be a first step in the way to progress in relations between Hamas and Israel. "I call Fatah and Hamas to unite the people because this is our first and foremost choice, that we have to unite under one flag so we can face the problems from outside", an unnamed Gaza resident told AP Television. A view that was echoed by another local Palestinian who urged unity. "Every one should understand that the unification of the Palestinian people is the necessary thing in order to for the Palestinian people to keep on going," he said. Last month, Saleh proposed a seven-point plan designed to rebuild the weak Palestinian Authority government. On Tuesday, Palestinian delegates from both factions flew into San'a for talks with Yemeni officials on ending the rift. The heart of Saleh's plan is restoring Abbas' authority in Gaza.
